The Working Mom’s ‘Mental Load’ Summed Up Perfectly in One Cartoon Strip

img_6690

Often times, moms have to do all of the organizing and planning around the house.

This is true even though parenthood is supposed to be an equal partnership.

What is also true is that a lot of working moms do not think that their husbands or significant others pull their fair share of work around the house and with the children.

This means that mothers have to do their share of the household chores and organize what everyone else, including their “partner” has to do as well.

This burden is called the “mental load,” and is very familiar to many moms around the world.

A French cartoonist who goes by the single name of  Emma crafted the perfect strip called “You Should’ve Asked” which explains the concept perfectly!

We’ve syndicated the first few strips below but can see the rest here at Working Mother which summarized the beginning:

“The comic starts out with a quick story of an overworked mom who had to cook while tending to her child at a dinner party. Eventually things get out of hand as the mom attempts to handle everything herself. Her husband then says he would have helped out if she had only asked him to. The comic goes on to explain that husbands shouldn’t have to be asked to step up and that moms shouldn’t be solely responsible for directing them and planning everything.”

Stress in Pregnancy Doesn’t Cause ADHD in Baby after All

img_6856

Stressed mothers-to-be face an increased risk of giving birth to a child who will develop ADHD or heart disease later in life,” the Mail Online reports.

However, the new study it is reporting on did not look at long-term outcomes in children, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), only at stress hormone levels during pregnancy.

This Swiss study involved 34 healthy pregnant women. Levels of stress hormones were measured from their saliva and the amniotic fluid around the baby during an amniocentesis – a test for genetic conditions.

Women who reported being under stress had higher levels of stress hormones in the amniotic fluid. Higher levels of stress hormones in the amniotic fluid were associated with lighter and smaller babies, but they then grew faster so that there was no difference by the time they were born.

It is difficult to draw any firm conclusions from this small study. It certainly does not show that stress during pregnancy causes ADHD.

Serena Williams Clarifies: Venus Williams’ Accidental Gender Reveal Wasn’t What We Think

chateau-eza-%e2%80%a2-instagram-photos-and-videos
Serena Williams was in PR fix mode recently after her sister Venus Williams appeared to have revealed the gender of her baby. While being interviewed following her first round French Open win, big sister Venus told a reporter that she hopes the baby will have her name.

“She’s going to call me ‘favorite aunt,'” Venus said during her post-match interview with Eurosport after winning the second round of the French Open on Wednesday.. “Every day we’re like, ‘Baby Vee, baby Isher, baby Lyn,’ so we all want the baby to be named after us.”

Not so fast, Serena relayed in an Instagram post essentially saying the pronoun “he” is not common in their household so that’s the reason Venus used that word. Hmmm….

“To clarify what Venus said, I am always joking with my sisters to see what favors I can get them [to] do for me next,” Serena Williams wrote in the “words” photo. “If I want something from one of my sisters, I say ‘Baby Venus, Baby Lyn, or Baby Isha needs it.’ I did not grow up with any brothers, only sisters and we all say ‘she’ more than ‘he.’ ”

Serena has previously said she planned to wait until the birth to reveal the baby’s gender.

“I think the surprise of knowing what you are going to have on that very special day you give birth is probably the best surprise you can ever have,” she said.

Now we will know it is the truth if they have a boy! The Grand Slam champ accidentally announced on Snapchat this past Aprail that she and co-founder of Reddit Alexis Ohanian are expecting their first child.

What Your Baby’s Birthstone Tell You About Her Future Personality

img_6812

Pregnancy is a very special time for expectant mothers and fathers. The miraculous growth of an entirely new human being continues to mesmerize and evoke feelings of previously unknown depths. Filled with incredible joy and immense anticipation, parents count the weeks leading up to the birth of their little baby.

Apart from shopping for baby items and getting the nursery ready, many of us visualize our baby before the birth because we are full of impatience and curiosity. While you wonder whether you are going to have a boy or a girl, you also frequently ask yourself what kind of a personality your little one is going to have. Is he going to be funny, smart, artistic, or intellectual? Is she going to be a doctor, a ballet dancer, or a rocket scientist?

One way of doing so is by looking at astrological star signs; another is to look at the wisdom provided through birthstones. According to many, birthstones predict a child’s personality traits.

Gemstones have featured throughout history, and birthstones are no different. Experts trace the origins of birthstones back to the Bible, or, more precisely, back to Moses. He is believed to have chosen twelve precious gemstones to decorate a special breastplate for Aaron, the high priest. The twelve stones are said to have represented the twelve tribes of Israel.

Later, these twelve gems became associated with the signs of the zodiac and, eventually, each gemstone was dedicated to one of the twelve calendar months. When looking for a list of birthstones, you may find different variations; however, the list we feature here is the one most jewelry makers use today.

The Power of Gemstones

Throughout history, gemstones have been used not just for their value and beauty but, also, because of their inherent energy. While not everyone will believe in the healing force of gemstones, people throughout human history have attributed special powers to gemstones. Individual gems have been associated with distinct qualities, and today’s crystal therapists use each precious gem for specific purposes.

Unique Qualities and Characteristics of Birthstones

Because each birthstone is associated with unique properties and intended for specific uses, we can, therefore, make certain guesses about the personality of the people born in each month. Consequently, if your child is going to be a January child, you can look up the properties of garnet and get an impression of the type of personality your child is likely to have. You may also wish to purchase the right birthstone for you child, as a source of comfort, as well as joy and strength.

What Birthstones Can Tell You About the Personality of Your Child

Taking a look at each of the qualities associated with your baby’s likely birthstone is utterly fascinating. While it will just give you a glimpse of what type of little person she/he is going to be, even a snapshot can delight and excite.

Let’s take a look at each birthstone, month by month.

start with mine and check out the rest here

September – Sapphire

Even though most people think of sapphire as a stunningly blue gem, sapphire comes in many colors. The most famous sapphire ring is perhaps the engagement ring Prince Charles gave to Diana in 1981 as an engagement ring. Prince William gave the same ring to Kate, now the Duchess of Kent, in 2011.

Throughout history, sapphire was associated with the divine. The Greeks, Buddhists, and Hindus also used sapphire for its spiritual qualities, believing that this precious gem provided a direct link to higher powers.

Personality Traits: People born in September are believed to be intelligent and calm and slow to lose their cool, but also reluctant to share their feelings.

Crystal therapists use sapphire to strengthen veins, calm cells, and enhance spiritual gifts.

George Clooney Probably Just Hinted Amal is Set to Deliver the Twins Soon

george-clooney-amal-gg

George Clooney probably signaled inadvertently to the public that his wife, international Human Rights lawyer Amal Clooney is expecting to deliver the couple’s twins any day now.

On Sunday, the actor and director was slated to attend an awards event in Armenia but he passed in order to not miss out on the birth of his twins while he would be away. .

“I really would have been (there) but if I came there and my wife had twins while I was there, I could never come home,” Clooney explained in a message.

The event was for the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, an annual $1 million prize bestowed on a humanitarian in honor of the survivors of the Armenian genocide. Both George and Amal have been consistent human rights advocates, and Clooney is the co-chair of the prize selection committee and has attended the ceremony in the past, per Time Magazine

The couple confirmed that they were expecting two babies earlier in the year.

How exciting if the new babies are indeed on their way!

These Proven Tips Will Get Your Kid to Excel at School

img_6790

Anyone who follows parenting memoirs has probably read, or at least heard of, the book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua, which was released back in 2011. It was a controversial book that advocated the strict supervision of a child’s education, which, it argued, is the best way for your child to reach their fullest potential.

The controversy stems from the magnitude of strictness that Amy Chua suggested; the methods suggested varied from a near-constant ‘hovering’ around your children to ensure that they did their homework perfectly to frequent volunteering for their school in order to be around them more often and to keep in ongoing contact with several teachers in order to assess progress.

While parents placing a high value on their children’s schooling is definitely admirable and beneficial, studies have suggested that the approach of the “tiger mother” may not be all that useful. There’s little, if any, evidence that suggests this approach actually improves grades and other metrics of school performance. (Which isn’t to say the book isn’t worth a read!)

Unfortunately, this approach is often what an involvement in your child’s education is taken to mean. But the choice at your feet in this context isn’t between total passivity and uninvolvement on one hand and unceasing hovering on the other. There are a lot of better ways in which you can become more involved in your child’s education and get them to improve their performance by increasing their own engagement. We’re going to take a look at some of the key ways in which you can help encourage your child towards academic success!

img_6791

Keeping up good attitudes

If kids don’t have they right attitude towards their schooling, then it can be very difficult to get them to become really engaged and positive about it – and that can be very damaging in the long run. Many parents may see the improvement of a kid’s attitude towards school as a lost cause. After all, how many of us really loved school all that much? Some say school days are the best days of your lives, but there’s no way that can be true, right?

Loving school and having a good attitude towards it are two very different things. A key to the development of a good attitude for your child towards school is for you to have a good attitude towards the whole endeavor. This can be difficult; if a kid happens to be struggling at school, it can be easy for parents to feel discouraged and frustrated. But you should remember that enthusiasm can be contagious.

You should communicate to your children that paying attention and doing your best at school while you’re young will pay off loads in future. School won’t last forever; in fact, it’s over before you really know it. There will be loads of time to complain about school once it’s over; but when you’re there, you should do the best you can.

A good attitude isn’t always fostered through these abstract means, however. Sometimes, a bad attitude can be attributed to physical issues.

Health and mood

Your health and mood at any given moment has a massive impact on your productivity and ability to retain information. This is true throughout life, and is probably something with which you’re already quite familiar. If you didn’t sleep that well last night, then your work performance is going to suffer at least a little. If you’re feeling ill, then you basically have no chance of getting any serious work done. And if your mood is low – which can be exacerbated by other health problems – then your ability to concentrate is shot.

We tend to become accustomed to these realities during adulthood; after we’ve left school and entered the daily grind of the workforce, we notice the ways in which our health and mood affect our professional abilities. The same goes for academic abilities; unfortunately, we often don’t realize this when we’re kids.

img_6792

So the importance of a good night’s sleep, as well as a healthy diet, should never be underestimated. While there are many differing views on just how much sleep a child should get, it’s estimated by most that kids perform at their best when they sleep for around nine or ten hours between 6-12, and eight to ten between 13-18. (As we reach young adulthood and midlife, many of us don’t tend to need quite so much.) Despite the common view that children are perpetually loaded with energy, they tend to get very tired in the middle of the day much quicker than adults. No late nights for the kids, then!

As for diet, you’re going to hear something you’ve probably already heard a million times before: breakfast is important. While eating something is always better than eating nothing before school, there are definitely things that are much better for your child’s mood, fitness, and concentration than a bowl of sugary cereal – the most popular breakfast for kids across the globe. Make sure they eat something with a little bit more punch when it comes to keeping up good health!

Rewards and fun

Do we want to foster the attitude that all things worth doing will come with huge material rewards? No. But this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t teach our kids that rewards can come through hard work. Academic achievements should be rewarded in some way – after all, while it’s good for kids to realize that not all work worth doing will be rewarded in the same way, the fact remains that kids, while they’re kids, perform better when they have a strong and tangible incentive. The

So what kind of rewards are best for a kid who’s doing well at school? If you want to provide them with a physical gift, you might want to consider getting something personalized or engraved. Businesses like I Just Love It offer these sorts of items. Unique markings, words, or photos can help make the gift feel a lot more personal and special; it also makes it more likely that they’ll keep the gift for a very long time, which will serve as a powerful reminder of the rewards of academic achievement in the long term.

You can also consider celebrating academic achievements by treating the whole family to a trip of some kind. But an element of fun shouldn’t just be confined to moments of achievement. The fact is that all work and no play really does dull your thinking. If you don’t take breaks, then you’re not going to be working at your fullest capacity either professionally or academically. So your kid may just have an excuse to spend some time playing video games – as long as it serves as a break from studying and homework!

Reading together

Reading is a wonderful thing for both parents and kids. It sharpens your thinking (its depth and clarity), it expands your vocabulary, it helps you recognize good sentences and arguments. It’s a habit that your kids should get into while they’re young, and it’s something that they should come to enjoy outside of the classroom. A lot of kids end up being put off by reading because they only associate it with academic work. This isn’t ideal, especially when you consider the lifelong benefits that come from reading whatever age you are.

Because it has such great educational benefits in and of itself, and because it can help prepare your kid your information retention in the classroom, it’s essential that you read with your child on a regular basis. People should read because they take joy in it. People who love to read throughout their lives often have very good and meaningful memories from childhood associated with reading. When you read with your child, you contribute to this essential part of their lifelong development.

img_6789

Whatever will be will be

At the end of the day, getting too involved or strict in your child’s schooling can have detrimental effects. It can increase pressure on your child to perform well, and that pressure seems to be increasing from year to year as it is. To some extent, your child needs to learn for themselves the rewards of good academic work and the consequences of poor performance. This means that it’s not always prudent to reward them every time they do well and punish them when they don’t.

As we get older, the positives of a job well done and the negatives of a job done badly become less and less apparent (usually until it’s too late). While we can guide our children towards a quicker realization of these important facts, the best way that such lessons will stick with them is if they see all of this first-hand at a young age.

Here’s another mistake that parents often make in this area: they may not punish their child or withhold certain treats when they don’t perform well at school, but they may take action to try to smooth out the bumps that come with that poor performance. For example, they may try to convince their child’s teacher to give them a higher grade that they didn’t actually earn. Unfortunately, this sort of approach will turn a child into a very dependent and passive learner. Learning should be an active activity, one that comes with several unpleasant bumps when mistakes are made. Shielding children from every consequence of poor academic performance won’t be that great for them in the long run.

Preggophiles On Craigslist are Soliciting Pregnant Women to ‘Worship’

pregnancy-775041_1280

Preggophiles are on the loose online and in social media, stealing photos of pregnant women, trying to convince them to submit their photos to pregnancy adoration blogs and social accounts in hopes of getting a ‘shout out’ and doing a few other outlandish things to get their rocks off using their sexual fetish with the pregnant form.

In the past, I’ve had a few curators of websites and other havens for men who have sexual fantasies and obsession with pregnant women offer to do post exchanges and form a partnership. Um, no thanks.

The offers and solicitations to partner have since dried up and a lot have  retreated and gone back underground but I’m certain they are still plenty of them around.

They’re even in Craigslist soliciting. This one on the German version of the popular ad site caught my eye:

When you’re pregnant you elude tons of sexual energy, you become so much more attractive. I simply have the desire to worship you, in whatever form you prefer. I could look at you and tell you how beautiful your body has become, I could gently touch your belly, touch your breasts or it could even lead to much more. You define the borders and tell me what you like. I’m a pretty and discreet man in his mid thirties with the necessary gentle touch and experience. I want to worship you!

baby-bump-worshiper-looking-for-a-pregnant-woman-m4w-casual-encounters

All together now…. “ewwwww!” I mean, unless you’re into that sort of stuff and want this sort of attention and affection then all the power to ya! But if you are not, you should not share your belly progression photos with any one who requests it and definitely from a site or account that you may suspect may not be legit.

Be careful out there, moms-to-be.

Budget-Friendly Celeb Swimsuit Styles for Every Body Type

celeb-styles

Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer. Pools open and families start making plans to hit the beach. Moms can use the opp to sunbathe and relax with the fam to also show off cute swimsuits without fear or shame or hiding their bodies.

These days, there are tons of swimsuit manufactures that cater to all tastes and comfort levels.

Women who have children are no longer forced to stick with the swim skirt or tankini. They can experiment with cuts, color, design, shape and patterns to accentuate their best features and shield those they are not comfortable with while still being confident.

Here is a roundup of various swim suit options out there and how to accomplish your pool-side or beach body look goal:

Ample bust

swim-21

For those who have ample busts, itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikinis just won’t do. Exposing the girls to a beach full of folks is not an option. For them, go with a one piece bathing suit with a halter top or a top with wide straps to provide max coverage and security. There are specialty stores that cater to large cup sizes and other designers make cuts that can also handle the boobage.  I like Carmen Marc Valvo‘s  Cape Town Beach Crossback One Piece suit. The back will give the extra support needed and it has runching in the side for max comfort and give. It’s under $100 at $69 at Swimoutlet right now.

Small Bust

suit1

If you have a size A-B cup chest, you can afford to be bold and daring with your look.  Off the shoulder tops are perfect and you can do string bikini tops with no problem and then can throw on a high cut bottom and go!  One option is Beach Riot Pretty Lights’ Mirage Plunge One-Piece swimsuit with  a plunging neckline which is under $100.

Full-Figure or Pear Shaped

andrea_iyamah_ss16_3_2048x2048

If you want to distract from any areas of your body that you consider “problem” ones, call attention to other areas like your shoulders, legs or waist in one of  Canadian-Nigerian designer Andrea Imayah‘s retro-style high-waisted swim suits. They have beautiful cut-outs making them very mom friendly yet still sexy and chic. Imayah has been featured in many fashion mags and other press Cosmopolitan UK, Ebony Magazine,Style HQ and other sites and her designs have been still also worn by celebrity bloggers Necole from XO Necole and Claire Sulmners of The Fashion Bomb Daily, and Hollywood figures Christina Milian, Adrianne Bailon, and Angela Simmons. The swimsuits cater to full-figured, petite, hourglass and pear shaped women. The bathing suits are full of color, patterns and prints that are inspired by cultures on the African continent

Ample or Wide Hips

div class=”shopsense-widget” data-options=”%7B%22columns%22%3A1%2C%22rows%22%3A1%2C%22showBrand%22%3Atrue%2C%22showRetailer%22%3Afalse%2C%22showInfo%22%3Afalse%2C%22showPrice%22%3Atrue%2C%22showSalePrice%22%3Afalse%2C%22size%22%3A500%2C%22pid%22%3A%22uid3121-8807761-31%22%2C%22productIds%22%3A%5B469181112%5D%2C%22type%22%3A%7B%22name%22%3A%22Type%20of%20Widget%22%2C%22list%22%3Anull%2C%22model%22%3A%22quicklist%22%7D%7D”>

Instead of a swim skirt, scope out the 1940s style swim suits that have built in body contouring that clenches the hips and hides your butt cheeks. Bring the focus of your pool-ready look to your chest, not your hips, in this flirty black number, for example. The halter top gives your chest ample lift while the ruffled, but fitted, skirt slims the look of your tummy and hips. This suit by Tommy Bahama is available in sizes 8 to 16. It’s on sale now for $105.

Wide Waist or Large Belly

b20eb925b793fdf989ca6d41c71b46dd_best

Draw attention from a belly with a suit that has sides that are black but a design in the middle. It will minimize the waistline. A suit like Spice Temple DD Maillot with its classic Aztec print mixed with solid side-panels will give you  a slimming effect to create an hourglass silhouette. It’ s little on the pricey side at $187 at WalaSwim, but you can certainly find a similar look online or in the stores for less.

Short Waist or Long Torso

08202d963ad1d2ca054e6adcccc2ac72_best

Now if you have a short waist and want to elongate your torso a bit, (or if you have a long torso and want to shorten it) a color block swimsuit is the way to go. Pick one with a pattern that either has long strips to lengthen the waist or short blocks to minimize it.  We like Calvin Klein’s Color Block suit with sells for under $70.

Stretch mark Tummy

Finally, not everyone like the high waist bikini bottoms, but we love them because they are great at concealing your tiger stripes from pregnancy. You can get an assortment of them in different patterns and colors and then get a solid black or other solid color bikini top to wear with the various bottoms.
