Here is Why We Don’t Know Much about Medications’ Impact on Pregnancy

pregnant-stock

As women have children later and later in life, the need to take medications during pregnancy is on the rise. Unfortunately, because very few studies have been conducted on how medications work in pregnant women, we’re really in the dark as to what kind of effects they have on both women and their fetuses. But new legislation aimed to address this lack of knowledge has finally been proposed.

Pregnant women are warned against eating or drinking many things—alcohol, caffeine, sushi, soft cheeses, to name a few—and when it comes to medication, similar precautions are taken. The problem is we actually have no idea how most medicines affect pregnant women or her fetus.

“I think it’s very important for anybody taking care of pregnant women on medication to understand that there are significant risks to not treating pregnant women,” says Maged Costantine, an Ob/Gyn and Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas Medical Branch

14 Gifs That Perfectly Showcase Beyonce’s Grammy Homage to Motherhood

bey-grammy-gifs

By now, most who are in tune with pop culture happenings know that  Beyonce gave a captivating bumpilicious performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards that took place at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California last night, February 12th.

Fresh off of the platinum-selling artist’s announcement that she and her husband Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter are expecting twins, the 22-time Grammy-award winning pop star didn’t back down from her commitment to perform LIVE at the show.

16730635_10154026879421353_8387409924919686188_n

It was glorious and showcased a marvelous celebration of the human body in pregnant form by a woman who was the most nominated for the night (9) though took home just two awards for Best Music Video and Best Urban Contemporary Album.

As could be expected, with her being that heavily pregnant and high-risk and all, she took it slow and opted to sing two ballads from her latest album, “Lemonade”: Love Drought” and “Sandcastles.

16640767_10154026879291353_1956208442425020505_n

During the performance, the “Love on Top” singer was draped in gold, flowy yellow fabric, regal chains, an ornate crown and draped with colorful maidens in waiting all outfitted in light slip dresses, tribal neck corsets and goddess braids.  She moved slowly and methodically, sounded breathy at times, probably from the pressure of carrying around two human beings while bringing down the house; and the event featured her mom Tina Knowles and daughter Blue Ivy.

mother-deity

The imagery was reflective of Hindu, African, Orisha and deities and figures, which carried its own controversy and elicited the usual outcry from Christians and the anti-Illuminati crowd.

Though slow and melodious, it was still an impactful performance which really paid homage to motherhood, the birthing process and femininity. The most drama came when the chair at the end of the runway she sat in made a dangerous pivot off the edge. It was enough to have anyone who has ever been pregnant or cared for a pregnant person sit at the edge of her/his own seat, hoping for the best.

Many agreed, she put a lot of trust in that chair and after a couple of sound snafus last night with Adele’s George Michael tribute and the Lady Gaga and Metallica set, I’m not sure I’d be that certain that a snafu wouldn’t go down.

But alas, when you have a squad this wide and deep who has your back, also known as the Beygency, then what can go wrong, right? These gifs from Vulture‘s gif bible provide an excellent showcase capture of the magnificence of the performance.

Palentine’s Day: How to be a Good Friend in 30 Tips!

friends

Today is Palentine’s Day, that day before Valentine’s Day when single people or those who are frustrated with the commercialization of Valentine’s Day. It is a day to spend hanging out with your bestie, catching a movie, binge watching your fave show or just playing video games.

It is also a day for reconnecting with old friends and getting reacquainted with what it means to be  good friend.

Valentine’s Day is typically a time to celebrate romantic relationships, it can also be a good time to celebrate your friendships, says therapist Jessie Shepherd who offered her 6 tips on maintaining a healthy friendship on Fox 13, Salt Lake City’s The Place.

How to be a good friend

  • You BOTH work at it.
  • Push each other.
  • Be a good influence.
  • Be honest, open & real.
  • Be mindful with each other.
  • If you fight, practice forgiveness.
  • Learn to accept yourself fully (and them!).

And here is what readers of the blog Tiny Buddha contributed:

1. Always be there, even in silence. (Nerrisa Nam)

2. Be kind and listen. Be fun and light. Be serious when needed, love extensively, and forgive always. (Sandra Lumb)

3. Don’t be scared to tell each other the truth, no matter how difficult it may be. (Eva Valencia)

4. Guide each other in times of need with your honest opinions. (Ashna Singh)

5. A true friend is someone who always listens and is genuinely interested in the good and bad, and someone who calls or writes just to say hello. (Kimberly McCarthy)

24. Know someone’s least admirable characteristics and still love and support them. (Talia Startsman)

Powerful Working Women Have Work Nurseries; How to Build Your Own

powerful-working-women

This week, First Daughter Ivanka Trump shared a photo of herself holding her baby Theodore while taking a business call in the White House. The image drew tons of love and praise and jeers and taunts. Some called it an example of feminism and others called it hypocrisy. Politics is a tricky game and these days, they are at a fever pitch. But politics aside, the topic of balancing work and motherhood is an ongoing hot bed issue.

Trump and Marissa Mayer both infamously announced plans to take short maternity leaves after having their babies but each soon learned that it is very difficult to have it all, and they reversed course. Fortunately for each of these women, they are the boss and therefore, they have tons of options.

Mayer, for example, built a nursery alongside her office so she could have easy access to her infant, whom I believe she was breastfeeding at the time. It was a controversial move because it came around the same time that the ex-CEO of Yahoo! banned telecommuting for her workers. Many women (and men) with children loved that option so they could work and care for their little ones.

My mom watches my baby sister’s 10-month old daughter while my sis works and my mom reports the baby not wanting to go to her mom after work. Having a baby nearby for those early years are crucial for bonding and the emotions of having your baby prefer a nanny and caregiver over his own mom could be devastating for any mother.

nursery office

I really did what another Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum, Rachel Zoe, did for the women who works for her. Zoe said in a blog post on her The Zoe Report website that five other women in her company were expecting in 2014.

“I found out they were all expecting within the span of a couple months (something’s in the water here, I swear), and my immediate thought was: We need to open a nursery. We might not be styling out of my garage anymore, but I still think of my staff as family,” Zoe wrote. “I wanted to create an environment where these new mothers wouldn’t have to make a choice between career and motherhood. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to grow my company from just a few people to more than 40 while having my kids (and my husband) by my side, and so I knew I had to do everything in my power to give my staff that same luxury.”

It was a great move by a woman in power who wanted to empower other women too.

321c70d4d0feffc0f2b40f2f6621c1bd

“My days are filled with an assortment of photo shoots and school pickups, business meetings and play dates, styling sessions and grocery runs. I am launching style boxes and boxing school lunches.” she penned. “In the words of Penny Lane (eternal muse to my editors), ‘It’s all happening.’ And if I can bring my babies to editorial meetings (it happens), fashion shows (guilty) and designers’ parties (most fun ever), why can’t my girls have their babies close by too?”

Zoe opened a nursery in her West Hollywood office that December right next door to her studio. She said she thought all companies ought to consider the same.

“Sure it required us to make additional investments—the physical space, the insurance required to protect everyone, the furnishings—but what we are getting in return is invaluable; the working mothers at our company can improve and grow our business without having to sacrifice spending precious time with their babies at such a crucial stage in their mother-child relationships.”

800px-baby_nursery_room

Bravo! In the course of two years, my eldest son had two different teachers check out after having their babies and my youngest lost two teachers who opted to stay home after having their little ones rather than return. Nearby nurseries could be a great alternative for those who want to continue their craft, passion and work and be near their babies.

And for those, like me, who work from home, a nursery office could be a great alternative. Here are the elements of creating a fab home office/nursery.

Start with a space-saving crib that isn’t too bulky! You can get one that coordinates with the furniture already in your office or redecorate to have one cohesive theme.

Fill the walls with colorful and attractive wall art to lift the mood and keep things vibrant and alive!

Finally, accent it with  a colorful or ‘in-theme- rug where baby can play while you work. A toy chest to house rattles, stuffed animals and educational toys would be a great added fixture.

Good luck!

Winter Dangers: 10 Ways to Protect Your Family from Carbon Monxide

img_2061

Carbon monoxide is winter’s “silent killer.” Carbon monoxide kills an average of 430 Americans each year and sickens many others. It’s a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas undetectable to the human senses, so people don’t realize that they are being exposed to it.

Symptoms range from headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness to confusion, vomiting, loss of muscular coordination and loss of consciousness.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can happen slowly or swiftly depending on circumstances. In an effort to raise public awareness, CaliforniaPoison Control offers 10 tips to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning:

1. Have all heating equipment installed properly, and have the home’s heating system inspected by a professional prior to turning the heat on when cold weather begins.

2. Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed in all homes, apartments and workplaces. When a detector goes off, assume that a real danger is present, and get all people and pets out of the structure immediately. Do not re-enter until a heating professional, the gas company or the fire department has declared the area safe.

3. During home renovations, ensure that appliance vents and chimneys are not blocked by tarps or debris. Make sure appliances are in proper working order when renovations are complete.

4. Do not cover the bottom of natural gas or propane ovens with aluminum foil. Doing so blocks the combustion air flow through the appliance and can produce carbon monoxide.

5. Never use portable fuel-burning camping equipment inside a home, garage, vehicle or tent unless it is specifically designed for use in an enclosed space and provides instructions for safe use in such an area.

6. In climates with snow, make sure that chimneys and vents do not become blocked with snowfall.

7. Never operate a portable generator or any other gasoline engine-powered tool either in or near an enclosed space such as a garage, house or other building, or outside of an open window. Keep the generator as far from the house as possible.

8. Do not use charcoal or hibachi grills indoors to cook with or for heat under any circumstances.

9. Do not attempt to heat your home by turning on the oven or clothes dryer and leaving the door open.

10. Never let a car engine run inside a closed space such as a garage. Drive out promptly after starting the car, and turn the car engine off as soon as you drive into an enclosed space. Never have a garage door closed with a running vehicle inside, even for a few seconds.

The fire of Love, The fire of confidence, The fire of strength, The fire of hope, The fire of grace, The fire of empathy, The fire to always fight for what she knows is right…deep inside of her… regardless of what others may tell her. The fire to demand more. The fire to go after what she wants and deserves. The fire that refuses to go out no matter who might try. The fire to know that Love wins. The fire of her ancestors. The fire of her dreams. The fire of her destiny. Because once you know you are the fire, and that it resides inside of you, you will know to never fear it. 10 Ways to Toddler Proof Your Home

girl-1561943_1280

As soon as infants become mobile they are suddenly gifted with the ability to get into everything that they can reach. When those infants then become toddlers that are able to walk, climb, and run through the house, parenting can feel more like a full-contact sport than anything else. Toddler-proofing your house requires more than slapping on a set of cabinet locks, though they are still a worthwhile investment. The average home is host to a staggering array of safety hazards, most of which aren’t immediately apparent to first-time parents of a newly-upright and mobile child. To keep your inquisitive little one safe and sound, here are ten tips for creating a safer home environment.

  1. Amend Your Cooking Habits – When you’re childless, or when an infant is safely tucked away in a bassinet, there’s not much focus on making sure that you choose back burners whenever possible and that you turn all pot and pan handles inward. The moment your little bundle of joy starts walking, however, it’s imperative to condition yourself to do just that. Reducing the risk of dangerous spills that can land on a child, or scalding food splattering onto his skin, by adjusting your cooking behavior is an important part of toddler-proofing the kitchen.
  2. Wrap and Conceal Electrical Cords and Wires – Wires that are visible, especially those hanging loose in bundles along the floor behind the entertainment center, should be wrapped tightly and concealed or secured so that little fingers can’t reach them. Pulling these wires can not only damage your appliances and components, but also send them toppling onto a curious child.
  3. Cover Outlets – Every new parent receives a handful of plastic outlet plugs that are designed to keep little fingers out of the dangerous current. They’re perfectly capable of doing the job when crawling infants are at eye level with outlets, but observant toddlers can figure out how to pull them out of the wall by watching his parents remove them to use the outlet. Investing in slightly more complex full outlet plates can foil your little genius’s attempts to access the wall plugs, keeping them safe from harm.
  4. Secure Shelving Units – It doesn’t take long for toddlers to learn that something that was previously out of reach of their questing fingers can be accessed by climbing. Shelves, dressers, and any other furniture that can possibly give a toddler an invitation for scaling it is subject to just that; while it’s best to discourage this type of behavior, it’s also a good idea to make sure that shelves are securely attached to the wall to prevent a dangerous tip-over if your child does climb onto them when you’re out of sight.
  5. Use Non-Skid Mats in Bathtubs – The moment your child can stand up, he will start to do so in the bathtub. Though you should never leave any child unattended in the bathtub, a non-skid mat can help you prevent nasty falls resulting from little feet than can’t quite manage slippery, wet tub surfaces.
  6. Lock Sliding Doors – Sliding a patio door open is, in many cases, easier for little kids to do than adults realize. Kids can slip outside in the blink of an eye by applying the slightest bit of pressure to the door, so make sure that you keep sliding doors locked at all times. It may also be wise to attach removable decals on glass doors at toddler-eye-level, to keep your child from running headlong into a transparent glass panel.
  7. Keep Medications In Childproof Containers, Out of Sight and Out of Reach – Reuters Health reported in 2011 that the number of children who end up in the emergency room due to accidental poisoning with prescription medications do so as a result of  accessing them themselves. Keeping medications in purses or bags and under bathroom cabinets, especially in easy-to-open containers rather than the childproof variety they’re originally dispensed in, is a risky proposition. Instead, make sure that all medication remains in childproof containers, and that all of those containers are kept well out of reach and sight. A safe or lock box is an ideal place to store medication.
  8. Use Safety Gates, But Realize That They’re Fallible – The baby gate is a perennial favorite of parents, especially those with stairs. While they can be very useful and effective, parents should remember that they’re not entirely foolproof, and that kids should still be supervised in an area with dangerous stairs.
  9. Install Window Guards – Window guards prevent children from tumbling out of second and even first-floor windows, whether they’re deliberately opened for air circulation or lifted by a curious toddler. The Consumer Products Safety Commission reports that an estimated 4,000 injuries occur as a result of falls from household windows annually, so don’t overlook the windows while you’re toddler-proofing.
  10. Set the Water Heater at 120° – If you didn’t turn your hot water heater’s temperature setting to 120° when your little one was born, it’s a wise move to do so now that he’s walking. Scalds are one of the most common types of burns that emergency room doctors see with their smaller-set patients, so making sure that your hot water never reaches excessive temperatures is best.

Rather than relying solely on your childproofing measures, it’s best to monitor your toddler and help him learn safe habits through direction and instruction. If you do, when he’s older and toddler-proof measures are removed, he’ll understand that some things are still dangerous to play with.
