How Instagram is Ruining Pregnancy For Everyone!

1444938509_jessie-james-decker-350

Pregnant women are being bombarded on social media with Photoshopped images and dangerous myths about exercising in pregnancy, leaving many feeling fearful and confused, experts will warn at next weekend’s Baby Show in Olympia, west London.

The exhibition, billed as the biggest pregnancy and parenting event of the year, will feature speakers and gadgets aimed at helping pregnant women to exercise safely and get back into shape after birth.

“In an ideal world, we wouldn’t be surrounded by Photoshopped images of celebrities four weeks after they’ve had a baby, looking like they were never pregnant,” said Philippa Kaye, a GP who will be one of the speakers at the event. “That Instagram-filtered world isn’t reality.”

There is a huge amount of pressure on women to get back into shape quickly after giving birth, and this can lead to injury. “I have seen women take it too far at the gym before and after pregnancy, and it’s caused problems,” she said. “If you never did any exercise before you got pregnant, you don’t want to start with high-impact training or a military boot camp in the park. It’s too much.”

Consider These Mom-Friendly Swimsuits by Andrea Imayah for Upcoming Resort Season

andrea-imayah

I was checking out the recent video for one of my fave recording artists, Jidenna and was taken by the gorgeous swimsuits worn on the women featured in the video.

What struck me most was the fact that they were retro-style high-waisted and had beautiful cut-outs making them very mom friendly yet still sexy and chic.

I did a quick Google search and determined that the designs are from the creative mind of Canadian-Nigerian designer Andrea Imayah.

She has been featured in many fashion mags and other press Cosmopolitan UK, Ebony Magazine,Style HQ and other sites.

Her designs have been still also worn by celebrity bloggers Necole from XO Necole and Claire Sulmners of The Fashion Bomb Daily, and Hollywood figures Christina Milian, Adrianne Bailon, and Angela Simmons.

I love that the swimsuits cater to full-figured, petite, hourglass and pear shaped women. The bathing suits are full of color, patterns and prints that are inspired by cultures on the African continent

Resort season is just around the corner and these swimsuits are vibrant and would make you feel like you’re on a secluded beach on an island even when at home.

Spanx Founder + Celebrites +Painted Bellies = The Belly Art Project

bellyi art

Spanx founder Sara Blakely released a new book last week called “The Belly Art Project” which is a book that features over 100 women with their bellies painted creatively.

Blakely launched the initiative in partnership with the nonprofit international organization “Every Mother Counts“, founded by model Christy Turlington, dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for women everywhere. It receives 100% of the proceeds from the sales of the book.

Blakely describes the initiative as part movement, and part celebration of the mother in all of us—the beautiful, creative, inventive spirit that connects everyone. Part of the project’s vision is to present the bellies as billboards for change.

Among celebrities whose painted bellies are featured in the book are Milla Jovovich, mother of two and Kate Winslet, mother of three.  Tamera Mowry-Housley is also featured and she recently shared a photo of the experience of having her belly painted.

“I’m so excited to share an incredible project I got to be a part of while pregnant with Ariah,”  the TV host of FOX TV show The Real shared on her personal blog. the television personality tells blog readers. “On the pages of this book you’ll find over 100 mommas-to-be with painted baby bumps, including an appearance by yours truly.”

Tamera’s spread features her and little Aden hanging out at a lemonade stand. Mowry’s stomach is designed after a lemon and the celebrity mom appears excited to share the sweetness of a drink such as lemonade with fans.

“Thrilled to be part of@sarablakely‘s book, The Belly Art Project!” Mowry-Housley captioned a photo of her belly getting painted when she was pregnant with daughter Ariah.  “Click the link in my bio to learn more about it and to see some bts photos from the shoot when I was pregnant with Ariah.”

Over 300,000 women die every year during labor and delivery due to lack of education, transportation to medical facilities and clinics for routine check ups, and insufficient medical supplies.  A number of women who live in developing parts of the world are miles from health carfe facilities and therefore are often subject to unsterlized equipment.

Every Mother Counts raises awareness and provides support for moms all over the developing world. Buying the book can save a mom or baby’s life. It retails for about $22.

Mowry-Housley and husband Adam Housley welcomed Ariah last year ad are parents to son, almost 4-year old. Aden Tanner.

It’s Pumpkin Patch Celebrity Sightings Time Once Again

One thing those of us who cover celebrity families can expect to see each Fall are photos of celebs with their children at California pumpkin patches. E!Online had a humorous take on the tradition of paparrazi stalking stars and their families.

This year, Alessandra Ambrosio, Mark Wahlberg and more recently Kourtney Kardashian and Blac Chyna (with Rob Kardashian) were spotted picking out gourds with their little ones, taking hay rides and getting their faces painted.

We did a little piece on Mr. Bones pumpkin patch in Culver City last year which is the most popular pumpkin patch for celebrity spotting!

Alicia Keys Dedicated Her ‘Blended Family’ Song to Husband’s Ex-Wife

alicial keys swizz beatz

Blended families are very common nowadays. According to US Census stats 40% of married couples in America are stepcouples with at least one partner having a child form a previous relationship before marriage. And in fact 100 million Americans have a step relationship.

Singer and The Voice coach Alicia Keys is included in this demographic.

She is married and has two son (6-year old Egypt Daoud and 1-year old Genesis Ali) with  producer/rapper Swizz Beatz  (real name: Kasseem Dean) who also has a son 9-year old Kasseem Jr. with his ex-wife Mashonda; a daughter 8-year old Nicole with ex- singer Jahna Sebastian; and a 15-year old son Prince Nassir with ex Nicole Levy. It has been a not -so-smooth road, but today, all has been forgiven and to commemorate their blended family, Keys released a song dedicated to her blended family, but in particular, Mashonda.

In the lyrics, she also sings directly to her step kids. It’s a lovely song. There is a lot of buzz and commentary about it on the net. Have a listen:

Did you Know ‘The Pregnancy Loss Club’ is Just like ‘Fight Club’?

loss

If you have ever had a miscarriage early in a pregnancy and gone on to successfully conceive and have live births to subsequent children, then you are part of a very very large sorority of women.

You are also among those who likely had little to no information about the prevalence of miscarriage before hand and who likely received insufficient follow up support.  You are also among a secret society of people who do not talk much about suffering a miscarriage. You are a member of The Pregnancy Loss Club.

HuffPo writer and mom of three Alexandra Owens wrote about her and her husband’s experience of losing their very first child, who was unplanned, unlike their subsequent children:

And that was it. No follow-up, no pamphlets on loss, no mention of it – nothing. Because I was a stat – especially being only 11 weeks – and they weren’t being cold on purpose. They were just following the unspoken rules.

PLC club rules

1. Don’t talk about PLC

2. Offer minimal support to avoid awkwardness

3. Don’t screen for postpartum depression. The chances of being affected are slim anyway because they weren’t that far along or didn’t actually have a baby

4. Remind them that they are still young and can have plenty more children. Or remind them to be grateful for the children they already have

After my husband and I came home I had zero clue what to do. I had convinced myself that this wasn’t a big deal. That I could easily move on. That is, of course, until my latte spilled all over the carpet and I lost it.

I can relate very much as it almost mirrors my exact experience after having a miscarriage of my very first child. I too went on to have three children like this author. Her piece hit home.

It’s a wonderful and insightful piece that I recommend you all read.

Halloween Costume Ideas w/a Bat: ‘Hold Up’ Beyonce & Harley Quinn

halloween costume

Looking for a Halloween Costume based on some recent pop culture music and movies? What if you have two parties in one night or back to back parties? If you have a baseball bat, you can remix it and go as two different women for under $100 each!

How about going as Beyonce and her bat “Hot Sauce” from the video for her song “Hold Up” from her visual album Lemonade? Then the next day, you can keep the bat and put on a Harley Quinn costume and go as the heroine from the movie/comic strip Suicide Squad.

Add a Daddy’s Lil Monster teeshirt that you can get for $26.99 at this site here and then thrown on a pair of black booty shorts over fishnet stockings and wear a studded belt and wear hair or a wig with dyed pony tail. The total would be under $100 but if you want to go all out, you can grab the bomber jacket for $46.99 to complete the look!

You Can Teach Kids about Civic Duty by Volunteering at a Local Diaper Bank

dc diaper bank

If you live in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and are looking for a volunteer activity that you can do with the kids, consider the DC Diaper Bank!

Many people do not realize that there are families out there that chose not to leave the house because they do not have fresh diapers or that wash, rinse, hang to dry and reuse disposable diapers.  The fact remains that social programs like food stamps and the like do not consider diapers a necessity and thus do not subsidize their purchase for low income families, some that survive on $25 per week, including the cost of travel to work and/or baby sitter drop off.

DC’s Diaper Bank is one of few nationwide. It was founded by mom Corinne Cannon who worked for a non-profit and after having her son learned that she could not put 100% of her time to her boss and her son.  While a stay at home mom, Cannon decided to channel her interest in helping those most in need in her community into an organization that has tripled in size and support over the years.

I attended an awareness event last month at the DC Diaper Bank on the invitation of my longtime friend Jessica McFadden , who runs the popular parenting blog sites A Parent in America and A Parent In Silver Spring.  It was a great opportunity to learn more about this organization that I didn’t know existed previously.

The Bank occupies two side-by-side warehouses in Silver Spring, Maryland, a suburb right outside of DC. It houses over 1 million diapers and has child friendly spaces so parents who volunteer can bring little ones.

Pre-school to school aged kids can help and learn about the importance of being a good citizen. The center has one night a month dedicate to family bundling that includes play and work.

Teens and others attending schools where they need to get service hours can benefit from volunteering at a local diaper bank too.

The DC Diaper Bank’s distribution days are one of the most exciting and important days as that is when the Bank delivers over 100,000 diapers to over 30 organizations across the DC Metro area. They can help these groups fill their trucks with much needed diapers for the families that they serve.

As we get close to Holiday giving season, the Diaper Bank has teed up some opportunities for those who want to contribute to do so easily. It has launched several easy initiatives and campaigns:

The $12 Factor:  Just $12 enables the DC Diaper Bank to buy almost 100 diapers, through discount suppliers, and keeps a baby freshly pampered for two weeks.

12_dollar_infographic
The Baby Pantry: Beyond Diapers: Families need essentials beyond diapers and their social workers get to “shop” for all these additional much-needed items that DC Diaper Banks accepts. See the list and find out more.
Sanitary napkins are a HUGE need for mothers, too, as when it comes down to choosing between diapering and feeding their baby and buying clean supplies for themselves, mothers always choose their babies.
Volunteer at the DC Diaper Bank Warehouse with your friends, group, kids! How to sign up for one of the most rewarding — and kid friendly.- volunteer activities in the DMV.
Host a Diaper Drive for your social good project: Want to give back with your kids through your Scout troop, house of worship, child’s classroom or just coordinate an awesome family project? Host a diaper drive. DCDB gives you all the tools you need.

Become a DC Diaper Bank Ambassador: Get a  yard sign! Excited to help spread the word. Get the deets

Donate to DC Diaper Bank’s Amazon Wishlist: No need to haul diaper in your cart and then to a DCDB drop-off location, send direct!
Donate to this non-profit in your charitable giving: DC Diaper Bank can purchase diapers wholesale waaaay below what we can get even at a Costco-like warehouse store, so any cash donation, large or small, can make a big difference for babies and families in need.
Do good and be good!
