Stella McCartney Honors Her Mom, Designs Bra for Breast Cancer Survivors

stella mccartney

Designer and Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Stella McCartney is paying tribute to her mother for Breast Cancer Awareness month by designing a feminine and fashionable mastectomy recovery bra. Linda McCartney died at 56 in the late 1990s from the disease.

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer among women of all backgrounds and is the second common cause of death for white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We wanted to bring something feminine and beautiful into a bra that is taboo,” McCartney told The Telegraph. “There are so many different emotions attached to the tragic realities of having had a double mastectomy, many cultures are unaccepting and terrible things happen to women both physically and emotionally.”

McCartney is calling the bra the Louise Listening bra after her mom’s middle name. It will be released in October and will have a pale rose with white overlay with a zipper in the front. There is no underwire and it has deep sides for support and compression to help as the scars heal.

“We just wanted to make something that allows women undergoing this to have something to be proud of, something with no shame attached,” the mom to two boys and two girls added. “We wanted women to know that you can still be feminine, have your sensuality, have all of the things that are attached to being a woman and that part of your body can still feel beautiful on the outside, as well as the inside.”

These 6 Herbs will help Boost Your Family’s Immunity This Fall

6 herbs to boost immunity

Today is the first day of Fall and as the temperatures begin to dip, many worry about cold and flu season.

There are herbs that are naturally available that can be taken to help keep you and your family’s immunity system strong. With the right nutrients and ingredients, these herbs are sure to help keep sick days to a minimum.

Here are world-renowned herbalist, Dr. Christopher Hobbs, Ph.D., L.Ac, A.H.G of Rainbow Light‘s pick and explanation of the health benefits of each herb:

1. Echinacea – Echinacea is a popular herb that has been identified to boost immunity. Combined with goldenseal, another herb, or enjoyed alone as tea, this member of the daisy family has been found to prevent and treat upper respiratory tract infections as well as the common cold.

2. Ginseng – This herb has many varieties ideal for boosting immunity and overall health. Its main active component, ginsenosides, has been proven to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Clinical research studies have demonstrated that it may improve immune and psychological functions as well as conditions related to diabetes.

3. Garlic – This spice has had a long history of medicinal value. Studies have shown that garlic promotes overall immune health, that it is active against specific bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, and that it may bolster the ability of the respiratory tract to defend against viral infection. What’s better? It’s also a great tasting spice to use while you cook!

4. Ginger – This herb has been shown to reduce inflammation, cardiovascular conditions, blood clots and cholesterol. Also a great ingredient to help aid digestion, we include ginger into many of our Rainbow Light products, such as the Women’s One and prenatal line of products, to help those with a frequent upset stomach.

5. Turmeric– This spice contains curcumin, which has notable antioxidant properties. It also has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and stomach soothing benefits. It reduces inflammation by stimulating the adrenal glands to increase the hormone that lessens inflammation. It is also used against headaches, bronchitis, colds, fever and menstrual problems.

6. Spirulina – worth a discussion, as this natural ingredient is often misrepresented as an herb. Although technically a marine organism, this ingredient is a powerhouse of immunity. Amino acids make up 62 percent of spirulina, making it a complete protein. It’s one of the few known plant sources of vitamin B12 and it’s full of amino acids, enzymes, and probiotics that help to enhance your immune system and digestive health. It’s a key ingredient in our Rainbow Light products – that’s how much we love it!

Dr. Christopher Hobbs, is an internationally renowned herbalist, licensed acupuncturist and botanist, has been formulating market leading natural supplements exclusively for Rainbow Light® since 1985. With more than 35 years of clinical experience in herbal medicine, Hobbs has authored 25 books, including Herbal Remedies for Dummies and Women’s Herbs, Women’s Health. He shares his knowledge of herbal medicine with consumers and educators all over the world through lectures, and utilized his expertise in this field to found the Institute for Natural Products Research. He also serves as a consultant to the herb industry.

Childfree v Childless: Actresses Kim Cattrall & Gabrielle Union reignite old debate

Two Hollywood actresses who do not have children have raised again in the press the age-old debate regarding childlessness and Child-freeness, and the controversy involving both.

Sex and the City alum Kim Cattrall told BBC radio recently that she has issues with the term “childless”.

It is a sensitive topic that seems to irk the vet stage actress.

“Child-less. It sounds like you’re less, because you haven’t had a child,” she said. “I think for a lot of women from my generation it wasn’t actually a conscious choice. It was a feeling of, ‘I’m on this road and things are going really well, and I’m very happy, and I’ll do it next year. I’ll do it in two years. I’ll do it in five years.'”

Cattrall added that though she is not a “biological” parent, she does consider herself a parent, nonetheless because of mothering she has done to young relatives.

“The thing that I find questionable about being childless or childfree is, are you really?” she asked. “There is a way to become a mother, in this day and age, that doesn’t include your name on the child’s birth certificate.”

Meanwhile Being Mary Jane star has been trying to get pregnant with husband NBA star Dwayne Wade but has been struggling and judged all the while by others for putting her career ahead of starting a family.

Union said being an older married woman without child is like having a “Scarlett letter” on your chest.

“There’s a certain amount of shame that is placed on women who have perhaps chosen a career over starting a family younger,” the Bring It On star told Redbook mag. “The penance for being a career woman is barrenness.”

Both recent comments speak towards societal expectations of women of child-bearing age and

Many people assume that they have the right to walk up to a woman and ask about her fertility, her family plans and many, casually, make assumptions about a very sensitive topic.

Often times, well-meaning adults will ask a couple in child-bearing age or who are newly weds when they will have a child. Many times, that couple may very well may be trying but have been unsuccessful and the incessant query from family and friends can serve to make a stressful situation even more difficult.

Other times, they may be among the hundreds and thousands of couples and women who have decided purposefully to not have children.

They could be treated as alien or as foreign beings for their personal choice.

It’s best to stay mum.

I had an awkward situation recently when I asked a mom at my kids school about her baby not knowing she lost the baby due to developmental and birth complications.

Although it was an innocent mistake, I would have preferred to avoid the awkwardness of the situation.

Instead, I joined the dozens of folks who she had to tell that she lost her baby. She will have to relive the loss over and over again with each unknowing person.

That is the additional thing with miscarriage, neonatal loss and infertility and why it’s best to tread carefully and minimize questioning women about their fertility and parenting choices.

Best Stay (or Work) at Home Mom’s Distraction Activity.

With the kids back to school, stay and work at home moms may get the benefit of getting distraction-free time to get work done around the house or on various work projects.

They will, however, be missing out on the silliness that comes with kids being around.

Fear not, I recently discovered a relatively new app that just picked up in popularity and is similar to the trendy DubSmash lip sync app.

Musical.ly offers quick clips of videos, movie or TV dialogue, musical lyrics set to music that users can lip sync to and create quick cute little videos. They then can share them among friends in other social media platforms or among their app followers.

The makers feature the best vids occasionally and they also invite users to participate in challenges in hopes of becoming featured. It was my guilty pleasure for a while though I’m weaning myself from making vids.

I invite you bored moms (and dads) out there in need of some comic relief during your busy day to download the app and give it a try!

And, inspired by blog trainer, speaker and another entrepreneurial mom Danielle Ford’s compilation, I compiled the best of my Musical.ly videos here:

Eco-Friday: Why You Need to Reduce the Rinse When Dishwashing

dishwashing reduce

It’s been a while since we brought you an Eco-Friday post with tips on how to lean a greener life. Here are some tips about conserving water while dishwashing.

Consumers often think that investing in new home appliances is one way to save energy, water and money. Newer appliances will run more efficiently simply by being new. Appliances in your hope can help you save the earth, and money on the water bill.

Reducing the rinse is one way to do so. People tend to think that hand-washing and pre-washing are ways to go when it comes to water conservation, but that is quite the opposite. Hand washing alone uses 84% more water than running a load in the dishwasher.

Samsung brings you this infographic on the importance of not washing dishes by hand, pre-rinsing or soaking and other water wasting steps families take that are not eco-friendly.

The Porsche of Strollers, No really, Porsche made a stroller

Bellyitch Rewind

Designer David Dawod created a stroller for Porche called The Porsche Design P’491- The Ultimate Porsche baby stroller for men.

David answered the call to create a stroller that a man wouldn’t mind pushing. Dawod wrote in his portfolio about the design that he wanted to “erase” the stereotypical female-centered notion of parenthood and emasculate it a bit.

“It was desired that the product could erase our view of parenting,” he wrote. “Why is it that in most cases only women take their children out on a trip to the park?”

The target market for the stroller: Male, over 35, with high income, with a wife, child and another on the way, who lives in a capital city, is highly educated, and is a CEO or some other executive and needs a new stroller for his newborn

Dawod said he spent a lot of energy “creating kinematic and ergonomic solutions for storing and adjusting the stroller.”

The final product is an exquisite, luxurious, durable stroller that is a blend carbon fiber, aluminum, and leather with ball-bearing wheels. It folds neatly to fit into the trunk of any Porche!
