How to Fake the Celeb Pregnancy Glow (A Step by Step Guide)

pregnancy glow

We share the secret of getting a beautiful pregnancy glow out of a bottle!

Theoretically pregnancy is meant to make you glow, its a biological ‘fact’. The increased amount of blood that’s circulating around your body is meant to give you a beautifully flushed look and as your skin retains more moisture and produces more sebum you’re meant to be glowing with a luminous dewy sheen – sound familiar?

Don’t worry if not, the combination of nausea, lack of sleep and sensitive skin experienced by many mums-to-be doesn’t lend itself well to natural radiance. Thankfully its easy to fake it – we explain how to get that ‘movie star’ pregnancy glow and only you need know its not real!

Step 1 – The Start

The first place to start is on the inside, drinking 8 – 10 glasses of water a day will do wonders for clearing your skin and helping to flush out water retention too. A good prenatal vitamin combined with a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruit, vegetables and omega rich foods will help too.

Step 2 – The Cleanser

Whether you suffer from dry, normal or oily skin its important to wash your face thoroughly twice a day. Using a gentle exfoliater such as Botanics In Shower Facial Polish will help to remove dead skin cells and improve circulation, banishing dull skin for good.

For best results apply in circular motions with your fingertips and rinse off with lukewarm water. Patting rather than rubbing your face dry can also help prevent blotchy skin and spider veins as you’re less likely to break the tiny capillaries that sit just under the surface of your skin.

Step 3 – The Moisturizer

Using a good moisturizer after cleansing is a must for gorgeous glowing skin. Massaging a fragrance free, sensitive moisturizer such as OZ Naturals Facial Moisturizer  into your face and neck will really help to give your complexion a lift without irritating your skin. If possible it’s best to go for a moisturizer that contains an SPF factor to protect your skin against the sun’s harmful rays especially as this can also help to reduce the likelihood of chloasma (brown patches) developing.

Step 4 – The Base

Blend a light base into your skin with your fingertips. It’s specially designed to conceal dark circles and skin imperfections with minimal effort so you needn’t spend hours blending for that flawless finish. Tinted moisturizers and foundations like stila Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer SPF contain light reflecting particles are also great for giving that dewy, smooth finish we all wish we had naturally.

Step 5 – The Blush

Recreate that gorgeous flushed look and perk up a grey complexion with a swirl of pink blush on the apples of your cheeks. A slightly shimmery, rosy color is always a good bet as it fakes a really healthy glow in an instant. I like Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick because it accommodates all complexions.

Step 6 – The Highlighter

Blending a peach toned highlighter along your cheek and brow bones will really help to lift your look and mimic that pregnancy sheen in seconds. You only need to use a dot and you’ll be able to recreate that ‘slept like a baby look’ on the sly. MAC’s Primed for Perfection Prep + Prime Highlighter brings a soft, sheer wash of color to the skin and goes on smoothly.

Step 7 – The Mascara

A sensitive mascara in black/brown will be gentler and more flattering on tired eyes. Curl your eyelashes first for a really wide awake look. You can’t go wrong with the old drug store fave, Maybeline’s Great Lash that usually runs under $5!

Step 8 – The Lips

To top off your gorgeously glowy look a sheer lipstick is a must. Go for a shade that’s as close to your natural lip color as possible as this will really help to finish your ‘natural’ look. Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip is a light gel that has a plumping effect.

So, now you’ve faked radiant, glowing skin all you need to do is smile and pretend that you feel as gorgeous as you look!

Thanksgiving Traveling with A Toddler Tips

Molly Sims Instagrammed herself with her 7-month old daughter Scarlett in a baby carrier and her 3-year old son in tow also as they prepared to travel for the holidays. “Nyc bound #weredoingthis” the actress and model captioned the photo taken yesterday.

If your family is hitting the road and taking a long-distance car trip to your Thanksgiving destination this year, here are snippets from our Thanksgiving travel tips to make it a smoother ride especially if you’re traveling with a toddler:

Set Clear Expectations

Before venturing out on the road, start small and positive by setting guidelines, says Carrie Krawiec, Michigan-based family therapist at Birmingham Maple Clinic. “Parents can set their children up for success by creating easy-to-remember expectations before leaving home,” she says. Create a list of five car behaviors to follow, such as keeping your hands to yourself and your bottom in the seat, using an inside voice and avoiding putting your feet on chair in front of you, suggests Krawiec.

Encourage positive behavior with travel rewards. “Parents can gauge their child’s level of attention by saying ‘I am going to watch these things and every five minutes if you have done this, you will earn a point for a sticker or silly band,’” says Krawiec. “This will make travel more cooperative.”

Charge Electronics

Even though you may limit your toddler’s time with tablets and electronic games at home, an iPad or Gameboy may be just what your child needs while traveling on long road trips. “With the age of technology, we have a big bonus,” says Christine Gutierrez, New York-based psychotherapist.

Many vehicles come equipped with DVD players and outlets for charging electronics to ease the challenge of traveling with young children. Pop in your child’s favorite movie or host a family sing-along with his favorite CD.

Make the trip educational, too. Download educational games and applications on a tablet to entertain your child or pick up a book or CD before taking off on your road trip. “Compromise is key here,” says Gutierrez. “Make baby happy and the rest of you shall be happy in the car as well.”

Chomp Down on Snacks Often, hunger cravings can cause a toddler to act out or misbehave. Prepare for a long road trip by packing a cooler of snacks and drinks to satisfy his hunger. Non-messy items, such as grapes, carrots or fruit gummies, will keep your toddler and your vehicle clean during snack time. Juice packs or milk in a Sippy cup can also comfort a sleepy toddler while traveling.

Break Out Goodie Bags The idea of being locked inside a vehicle for hours on end doesn’t necessarily sound appealing to a young child; however, if the trip includes goodie bags filled with games and activities, she may be more than eager to jump into that car seat.

Keep the bag in the front seat with you and break out games and activities along the way as your toddler gets antsy, such as a coloring book and crayons, an etch-a-sketch or even bubbles to blow out the window. Make the trip educational by purchasing a map and asking your toddler to point out states you drive through or license plates from each state. When your toddler is tired of one game or activity, take out another to keep her occupied.

Parents can include any of the following in a “goodie” bag for a long road trip with toddlers:

  • Dry erase board with markers
  • Stickers
  • Small Cars
  • New Books
  • Paper for Drawing
  • Travel Versions of Favorite Games
  • Dollar Store Finds

You can make activities much simpler by bringing along a lap desk or a cookie sheet your child can place on her lap. As a bonus, using magnets on the cookie sheet creates a game of its own, and the raised edges will prevent crayons or cars from landing on the floor of the car.

“Planning ahead is the key to preventing restless, unhappy children (and parents) during a car trip,” says Richard Peterson, vice president of education at Kiddie Academy. “In fact, you can even sneak in a little education along the way by playing classic car games, adjusted to fit your child’s age.”

Peterson suggests asking toddlers to search for shapes, colors or specific objects along the way. “The games will serve as a distraction, but also help to hone observation skills,” he says.

If all else fails, crank up the tunes or make a pit stop at a park along the way to deter boredom for your little one. “Boredom is probably the biggest difficulty your child will encounter during a long car trip,” says Peterson. “Toddlers live in the here and now and do not have the life experience to understand that the destination will be worth the time in the car seat.”

grammy latin

Tonight is the  the 16th Latin GRAMMY Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on November 19, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Roselyn Sanchez co-hosted the biggest night for Latin artists.

Before the show we spotted another Bellyitch alum Zoe Saldana looking back to her super svelte self in a cute pencil skirt length black dress.

Not a mom but another regular featured parent, Ricky Martin looked extra dapper tonight.

Sanchez did an illuminating color, white, the night before attending the 2015 Latin Grammy Person of the Year Honoring Roberto Carlos in Las Vegas yesterday. Nice!

Jada Pinkett-Smith, one of our posh mom style icon recipients, went with embroidered overlay white dress with the bodice shear and strategically placed over her breasts. She was alongside her husband Will Smith who was set to perform with Bomba Estero during the ceremony.

Things to Consider Before Agreeing to be a Bridesmaid While Pregnant

bellyitchblog.com bridesmaid
If you’re planning on both a pregnancy and being a bridesmaid in the near future, here are some of the bumps (pun totally intended) in the road to consider before officially saying yes.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that every bride-to-be shall be in want of a good bridesmaid…or three. And chances are that when a friend comes to you basking in that newly engaged glow and asks  you to be one those bridesmaids, you’ll jump at the chance to support her on her big day: The dancing! The shoes! The dresses! The CAKE!.Before you can say “yellow organza chiffon,” you’ve committed to being a bridesmaid and all that the honor entails. But what if you are

expecting to have a big (and getting bigger) event of your own sometime in the next nine months?

 1.The Cost
While the costs associated with being a bridesmaid can vary from wedding to wedding, one thing is certain: a baby on the way means unexpected expenses will be particularly unwelcome. After all, your priorities are changing, and whether it’s saving for diapers or a college fund, you want to make sure being a bridesmaid won’t mean being expected to pony up for expenses you soon won’t be able to afford. Accordingly, it’s important to clarify just what kinds of expenses will be expected of you ahead of time. A few to inquire after:
1. Will you be responsible for your dress, or will the bride pick up the tab? The same goes for those dyed shoes and your fabulous wedding day up-do and manicure.

2. If travel is involved, how costly will that be? Airfare, cab fare, hotel and eating out should all be considered.

3. How much (if any) will you be expected to contribute to a shower or bachelorette activities?
 2. The Dress
Since bridesmaids dresses are known for being so lovely and flattering, finding a dress that will work while you are pregnant should be no problem at all! Um, yeah…Back on planet earth, bridesmaids dresses can be itchy, lumpy, scratchy, and pinchy (yes, you know pinchy is a word). But this is not to say that you cannot totally rock the pregnant bridesmaid look as long as you keep a few things in mind.
1. Comfort and Fit: Ultimately, you want a dress that flatters your figure and that you’ll feel great wearing. Look for a flowing empire-waisted gown, or a dress that can be ‘enhanced’ with an extra panel to accommodate that lovely baby bump of yours!
2. Alterations: Make sure you’ve got a good tailor who will be able to make last minute alterations a little bit in advance of the wedding date. As you know, all of those measurements are going to change. And then change some more.
3. Support: Speaking of those changing measurements, the right maternity bra can do wonders for a girl’s mood at a wedding, not to mention her back! Once you reach your third trimester, you will likely need to trade in those lacy bras and reach for something more substantial. Just don’t forget to make sure that your maternity bra works with your dress as the date nears.

 3. Your Due Date
Let’s put this right out there: Going into labor at your friend’s wedding is not ideal. If your due date falls very close to the wedding date (or even within a month), you should feel free to humbly decline being in the wedding. Consulting with your doctor is also a good idea, as he or she will have likely dealt with this issue in the past and can make an individualized recommendation.

However, if your due date is farther afield from the wedding date, then the most important factor to consider is likely to be travel. While most airlines will allow pregnant women to travel through their eighth month, you need to consider what your own personal comfort level will be.

Tips for safe air travel while pregnant include walking the aisles on your flight to prevent blood clots, drinking lots of water, and wearing your seatbelt under your belly rather than across it. Travelling during pregnancy can be challenging, but if you and your doctor think you are up for it, then you’re a go.

Just one thing though: You know those teeny tiny airplane bathrooms? Need we say more?

4. The Time Commitment She’s the friend who consoled you that time you broke up with that jerk during freshman year…and then consoled you again when you broke up with that other jerk that next year. She’s been with you through thick and thin and late night pizza runs. So of course you want to be the absolute best bridesmaid possible. But take a moment to consider what that might mean: stuffing invitations, licking stamps, shopping for wedding favors, liking her Facebook posts, and talking. Lots and lots of talking. You owe it to yourself and to your friend to think realistically about what you can handle during your pregnancy. No friend wants you to overtax yourself while you should be focusing on your health and the health of your baby. Let her know your concerns and ask in the gentlest way possible what will be expected of you so that you can both make an educated decision.

5. The Friendship Style
Before you say yes, think about the type of friendship/relationship that you have with the bride. Is it filled with drama or is it mostly peaceful? Communication will be key to making this situation work. She needs to understand that there will be times during this pregnancy that you will be tired, anxious, or painting adorable ducks on a nursery wall, and therefore will be unable to check out her Pinterest board right this moment. And you will have to understand that this is one of the most exciting times in her life, and that she will need your support throughout, even if your feet are swollen and throbbing, and the ducks need

painting. If you two have that covered, the rest of the stuff will be a breeze.
Final Thoughts
Being asked to be a bridesmaid is an honor, for sure, and it’s no wonder you might be tempted to fill such a position for a friend you care about so dearly. But true friendship means knowing your limitations — something your friend should likewise honor and respect. And don’t worry: if you can’t participate as a bridesmaid, there are plenty of other ways to show your friend you care throughout this process. So, consider your next steps carefully and you’re sure to make the decision that will best balance your friendship and your own needs. And by the way, congratulations!

2015 BET Awards Red Carpet: What & Who Our Star Moms Wore

2015 bet awards

We loved the interesting selections our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums wore on the red carpet last night at the 2015 BET Awards held at the Microsoft Theater  in Los Angeles, California. As usual, we’re doing our rundown on the designers who outfitted the ladies who walked the red carpet.

Kelly Rowland rocked a black asymmetric feathered mini frock by Lever Couture which featured a mock turtleneck and billowy sleeve cascading from the sleeves with slick back hair. It was a daring and bold move.

image

Amber Rose came hand in hand with her BFF Blac Chyna, both Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums. Each wore matching white suits and bustiers from lingerie designer La Perla. They even shared a kiss on the red carpet to celebrate the US Supreme Court’s decision which opened the door for gay couples in all states to marry.

image

Christina Milian also arrived in white. The reality TV star, actress and singer came decked out in a jeweled halter jumpsuit made by Erevos Aether and paired with Ruby Stella jewels and Jimmy Choo sandals. Cayooot!

image

Ciara made another fab choice by arriving in a plunging neckline Wes Gordon sheer dress made of embroidered metal, accented with minimal jewels and Stuart Weitzan pumps. She arrived with her new beau NFL Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

Lil Kim looked amaze balls as well while performing during the Bad Boys tribute. She popped out of a hole in the stage to the glee and delight of the audience.

TV Host & Idol Alum Kimberly Caldwell is expecting her first child

Aww man! I was a loyal American Idol fan, especially in the early years and I was a fan of the two Kimberlies, two top ten finalists both named Kimberly (Caldwell and Locke), in Season Two of the popular television singing talent show.
As our social media specialist Chelsea Social reported on our Facebook page this week, one of those Kimberlies, Kimberly Caldwell, is expecting her first child with her professional soccer player husband Jordan C. Harvey.
The newlyweds since December already have a name for their impending arrival, a girl, Harlowe Monroe.  *gush*
How Beautiful! That’s going to be a gorgeous baby!
Since Idol, Caldwell released an album and works regularly as an actress and television host on network and cable channel programs, most recently, the TV Guide Network. She also designs handbags and headbands and has a beauty makeover business.

Caldwell, who resides in Vancouver, Canada with her hubby who plays for the Vancouver White Caps  shared a gorgeous bump photo when she was 16 weeks along on her Instagram page.

As avid soccer lovers and shower singers here at the Bellyitch offices, we look forward to hearing more about Harlow once she arrives.

20 Things Successful Parents Do Differently

We sometimes see those smart, precocious, child prodigies in media stories and marvel at how articulate, astute, expressive and confident they are. We wonder if they were naturally like that or if if their parents and support network made them that way. Is it nature or nurture? Most likely it is a combination of both. Character traits are inane and it is a fact that some children just have more drive and will than others and they want to succeed and do their best. It’s not to say that less-motivated kids cannot excel, it just takes a lot more to get them there. Here is where active parenting comes into play.
In recent years, we’ve seen a movement against the “helicopter parent” who hovers over their child or children and has his or her hands in all aspects of their children’s lives to make sure their kids are successful. The criticism is that such parents are hurting their children by not allowing them to fail or to learn things like work ethic on their own. There is value in trying and failing or just not getting the first place prize. All of this is true, however, it is a mistake to tell parents they should not be active, involved and engaged in their children’s lives.
A recent study said parents create narcissistic children by telling their child they are special too much. I find that hard to believe because, if anything, there are too many children who do not have high self-esteem or self-love. I cannot agree we should be showing our children less love.
It’s all about balance.
My husband’s aunt worked as a housekeeper for wealthy families for over a decade. Before then, she was a successful and award-winning early education teacher in her native Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. Below is a combination of things she informed us the parents she’s worked with do, and things that I and other successful parents of smart, athletic, talented kids do. This list is not presented to make other parents feel inferior if they have not or are not doing these things but merely to edify and instruct.
Successful parents….
1. They get prenatal treatment when they discover they are pregnant and read everything they can get their hands on about fetal development and pregnancy so they are informed. They put their baby’s needs ahead of their own, including foregoing hours spent on social media and doing other mindless activities, to instead learn about what’s going on inside their body so they are best prepared when their child is born.
2. They read to their child in the womb. They are aware of studies and reports that say fetuses that are exposed to the read language have better development in utero and in early infancy.
3. They read to their children in early infancy because they know that hearing the oral language as spoken and in natural speech is different and babies learn that early.
4. They ask their children to read signs and other things when they are out. Doing this keeps them sharp and aware of learning around them and the constant opportunities to get academic enrichment even while doing boring and mundane tasks or running errands.
5. They don’t snap when a child asks a question or shut them down. They have the patience to answer calmly and encourage follow up. You never want to shut down the natural curiosity of a child or a child who wants to learn and know more. That’s a good thing that should be encouraged not discouraged by telling a kid to hush or shut up and be quiet.
6. They take their children everywhere. It may seem like a burden to some to lug out a car seat, pack a baby back, haul the stroller in the car and go through all the endless steps involved for an outing. However, it is worth it. Kids that are exposed to the world, different people and even in germy places are more astute and develop interpersonal skills with others. If you can grab a carrier and when baby is big enough, have him face the world. Germs are not your enemy. They help build up an immunity and make your kid less sick.
7. They avoid negative words and certainly don’t call their kids bad. Here are a few other choice words to use when you’re aggravated and want to scream about how “bad” they are: challenging, difficult, disobedient, stubborn, naughty. These descriptors are more specific than just the general word, “bad” which is  the opposite of “good.” No child needs to hear that they are “not good” no matter their behavior.
8. They ask them specific questions. How was your day and how was school will just get “good” as as a response. Instead ask what was the hardest part of the day today or what assignment did you enjoy doing the most today or who did you sit with at lunch. And then listen to the answer. Get your head and mind off of your smart phone and focus on your kid.
9. They enroll their children in arts, gymnastics, play, music and other enrichment classes so they build a well-rounded child. They know that the benefits of extracurricular activity spill into the classroom and that it’s important for kids to enjoy all aspects of life: culture and fun.
10. They make sure they know what reports, assignments, exams and quizzes their child has coming up. Help them study, if possible, or make sure they are putting in ample prep time. And if they are incapable of helping, they get a tutor and find the free tutor hour that some city libraries offer.
11. They don’t use corporal punishment like spanking as the first way of discipline. They are creative and find other things like taking away a favorite game or past time, TV or video games, put kids in corners, make them do push ups and sit ups, and find other alternatives.
12. They limit their children’s screen times because the mindless playing nonstop takes away from their children going outside to play and explore. All that has been written about the negative impact of excessive video-game playing are out there.
13. They play board games because that teaches patience, strategy and skill.
14. They do crafts with their children because it encourages parental bonding and teaches patience and how to complete a project from start to finish.
15. They encourage their child to play house or with action figures because it enhances their imagination and prepares them for logic and composition later in their schooling.
16. They encourage their children to play with Legos because building activities helps grow patience, skill, logic and develops spatial reasoning which will be great for math class later.
17. They have high expectations and let their children know constantly they will not settle for or accept mediocrity. When a parent has a non-motivated child who is not a self-starter or doesn’t have the self-drive to want to excel, their child will never do better unless they are made to know they have to try. If you accept all C’s and D’s and do not express disappointment, neither take the steps to get a tutor, become engage with the assignments or reach out to your children’s teachers, they will continue to bring home C’s and D’s.
18. They get their children into team sports or martial arts because not only is the extra movement outside of gym class or recess important for fighting childhood obesity, but these activities also build confidence and keep kids off the streets, and away from drugs and other deviant behavior and circles of influence.
19. They don’t compare their children to other children, especially in front of their kids because they know all children have special talents, circumstances and levels of drive that differ. They focus on drawing out whatever their child is best at and complimenting them on all they love about their child, rather than focus on the negative.
20. They shower their children with affirmation in the form of hugs and kisses and positive advice or words simply letting them know how happy they are to have their children in their lives. Confident children who love themselves and have high self-esteem are fed positive vibes from home so they know they don’t need to go elsewhere for approval. To borrow a popular cliche: Home is where the heart is.
There you have it. If you are doing these things, kudos to you,  and if not, consider taking heed to those you like and abandon what you don’t. There is more than one way to raise successful, conscientious, civic-minded, and well-rounded children.

Godpspeed parents!

Review: Kwena’s crocodile oil is great cure all for a pregnant belly, babies and entire family

I believe in the power of a massage. For babies, a gentle massage after a shower is great for several reasons: 1. It feels good and can calm a baby; 2. It reinforces a bond through the touching aspect of a massage connects the parent with the baby and works on strengthening connections; and 3. It lifts and enhances mood through the aromatherapy aspect of the massage if it is done with a fragrant emolient infused with calming scents like lavender, jasmine, mint, lemon or chamomile.
There are various products out there but I recommend going with an all natural balm with minimum chemicals.
I was sent all the way from the Nile in South Africa a few vials of some wonderful crocodile oil in a salve made by Kwena.
Used by the ancient Egyptians, crocodile oil is extracted from the fatty tissues of crocodiles and has been used as a preventative and treatment for a number of human ailments.
The mixture of the oil with grapeseed oil, beeswax  and tea tree oil is the perfect blend and texture for moisturizing hands and other body parts. It was mildly fragrant but not too overwhelming and the absence of excess chemicals means it likely wouldn’t irritate baby’s skin.
The moisturizer was not sticky but silky to the touch and could easily be incorporated into a daily moisturizing routine by a pregnant woman who is fighting stretch marks or trying to prevent new ones form forming in her second pregnancy.
It is said this ancient oil can heal several other skin conditions including burns, cuts, sores, sunburn, lacerations and lesions, ulcers, blisters, irritated skin, diaper rash, insect bites, razor burns, sports injuries, sore muscles, arthritis, sprains, stiffness, joint pain, gout and can help with rapid healing of viral and fungal infections like ring worm and athletes foot, warts, dandruff, rosacea, psoriasis and eczema!
Phew!
The name Kwena  is Sotho-Tswana for crocodile in Southern  Africa. No testing is done on animals and the oil comes from crocodiles farmed for other purposes.
Kerns sells their salve for $32 a 30 ml vial and all orders over $55 are free an shipped internationally.
And it only takes a little bit to do the trick which is good given it’s a bit costly.  You can certainly nurse it. I did with my one 15 ml sample jar which is lasting me several weeks and I still have plenty left over. Good stuff. Highly recommend!
If you can afford to get your hands on this exotic and rare find, you should.
