Summer Hair: Ombre Styling and Maintenance Tips

bellyitchblog.com ombre hair

Ombre hair is still a go-to hair style for the summer.  The hair coloring style trend, which features gradually lightened hair from root to tip, has been seen on many celebs, on runways and in fashion mags.

Our partners at Glamazon have tips on how to maintenance Ombre hair if you dare go this  fun, yet slightly high-maintenance, route this Spring or Summer:
While ombre hair isn’t as high maintenance or as tough on your roots as dying all of your hair a single hue, you still need to treat your tresses with TLC. Here are a few Do’s and Don’ts to help you keep your ombre hair looking fab at all times.
Do…Deep Condition and Keep Hair Moisturized
Just because all of your hair wasn’t dyed, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take heed to the fact that a portion of your hair has been processed and needs care. Since ombre hair usually entails going from dark to light, the use of bleach or other chemicals will probably be used. You should deep condition hair at least once a week to keep the color looking fresh and to keep hair shiny and strong. Breakage is definitely no bueno!

Do…Use the right product
You still need to use products that are for color-treated hair with the ombre look. Usually it’s best to use a sulfate-free product that says it’s for color-treated hair. Regular products can be too harsh and strip the hair of essential oils, leaving it brittle and dry.

Do…Remember That Dirty Hair Is Good… For Coloring
Although, it could be safer and yield better results by consulting a professional, if you’re a DIY beauty girl (I absolutely am), try not to wash your hair directly before coloring it. Our scalp produces natural oils that can actually help protect it from damage.

Don’t…be lazy
Just because you won’t have to touch up your roots as often, you do get a green light to just let your hair go. You still need to have regular touch-ups (depending on the permanency of the color it’s essential to get a touch-up every 5-6 months). It’s not haute to have scraggly, fried ends with unkempt dark roots.
Don’t…forget the color change has to be gradual.
Make sure the jump from a dark hue to a lighter shade isn’t too abrupt (like Ciara‘s). The way Keke Palmer‘s dark locks flow into a lighter hue is perfect.

For Real this Time: Disney Introduces Its First 100% Latina Princess (TRAILER)

elena

Disney’s first Latina princess is here and so is the trailer to the television series she stars in: Elena of Avalor.

Princess Elena Castillo Flores is empowered, a skilled sword fighter and is set to gain political control over her kingdom. No, she is not the typical damsel in distress princesses of yesteryear who waited in a tower to be rescued by Prince Charming. (No offense Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Snow White). Really, ever since Brave, princesses haven’t been the same [See Brave‘s Merida, Rapunzel and Frozen‘s Anna] (smile)

On the cusp of ascending to the throne as Queen, Elena, the rebel does the dirty work to protect her land. She’s pretty bad a*#@!

Yeah, we said it!

Elena will be voiced by actress Aimee Carrero (Young & Hungry), who was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic before moving to Miami, Florida.

aimee carrero
Unlike other Disney Princesses introduced in a motion picture, Elena of Avalor is a TV series which starts July 22nd.

And unlike “Sofia the First“, Disney’s first attempt at a Latina princess before facing backlash that she was too white, Elena is 100% Latina and has deep olive skin tone, and is not of mixed heritage as Disney was forced to reveal about Sofia amid the firestorm. (Read about that controversy HERE)

Others lending their voice include: Jenny Ortega (Jane the Virgin); Chris Parnell (Saturday Night Live); Yvette Nicole Brown (Community), Carlos Alazraqui (Disney Junior’s Sheriff Callie’s Wild Wese), Emiliano Diez (George Lopez) and more.

#PhilandoCastile and #AltonSterling: Celeb Moms Who’ve Spoken Out About Killings

candles

Tonight, we’ve reached a tipping point in America as several Dallas police officers were killed during a rally to protest recent police shootings. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those men and women who put their lives at risk daily to protect and serve.

Here is a rundown of what sparked the rally followed by solidarity messages from celeb women we’ve featured on the blog:

Within 48 hours, two black men in “concealed weapon license to carry” states exercising their rights to have guns in their pockets were nonetheless shot and killed by police officers. Both killings, one execution style and the other in front of a 4-year old child during a routine traffic stop, has sparked outrage.

Alton Sterling was selling CDs outside of a grocery store in a high crime neighborhood and exercising his Second Amendment rights as an American, carried a weapon to protect himself. Someone reported to the police that Sterling had it out waving at people and after scuffle with the officers who arrived at the scene and eventually took Sterling down, another took out his revolver and emptied a couple of rounds into Sterling’s body before falling off the man’s chest and shooting a few more shots. The store owner and another eyewitness filmed the shootings on their smartphones and circulated it on social media. The outrage has been swift.

That same night, another man, Philando Castile, was driving with his girlfriend Diamond Reynolds and her 4-year old daughter in the backseat when he was pulled over for a busted tail light. Diamond turned on her Facebook Live and shared the incident as it happened with her followers on the social media site. The world was witness to the moments immediately after one officer shot him as he reached into his pocket to pull out his driver’s license as asked to do so by the officer, per Reynold’s account. The officer can be overheard on the video saying “ignorance”.

As with other past police killings of unarmed black men and boys, many parents have been shaken by the incident especially parents of young black boys. In social media, many have expressed fear that when their children grow up, they will be seen as menacing threats simply for being in the skin they were born in and could be the next hashtag.

I know personally, I’ve talked to my kids again as my husband and I do periodically throughout their lives to make sure they are aware what they need to do to escape a possible police encounter alive. My father in law is a retired veteran police detective and my husband’s uncle was a police officer. We fear for the lives of blue and believe Blue Lives Matter as well, but at the same time, we are frightened by the pattern of brutality among some officers.

Don’t You Just Love the ‘Real Moms’ of Instagram?

real moms

If you get caught up in the beautiful, well-curated, and pretty images that some mothers present on social media,  you may lose your marbles comparing your not-so-perfect life with theirs. It will never measure up of course. But that’s okay.

For this reason, we appreciate moms who keep it all the way real by posting the highs and lows, the ups and downs of life as a mom. Cheers to them.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are Not the First to Hide a Birth from the Public for Weeks

goslings

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling pulled a Neve Campbell: totally hid the fact they had delivered a baby until discovered by prying paparazzi.

In 2012, Campbell was spotted by the paps playing with her baby 6 weeks after delivering her at a local park.

TMZ got a hold of the birth certificate for Mendes and Gosling’s second child, daughter, Amanda Lee Gosling. The new arrival was welcomed last month on April 29 at the St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

The extremely private couple did a great job of keeping the news secret.

The couple also have a two year old daughter named Esmerelda who has never been revealed to the public, or had her photo shared publicly.  She was born on Friday, September 12, 2014, but that news was discovered too after some news agency’s did some creative snooping.

It is common for celebs who spend their entire lives in the public eye to shield certain part of their lives from the press.

We’ve never ever seen Kerry Washington‘s daughter, Isabelle Amarachi Asomugha, either.

And in 2012, Dido only mentioned she had given birth to her first child with husband Rohan Gavin in December that year, months after actually delivering her son in the Summer.

Last month, reality TV star and swimsuit designer Draya Michele famously did not disclose she had given birth until after she released all of her maternity portraits via her Instagram account. She said she wanted a few moments with herself and the baby before letting the world know.

“I had him last week and I just wanted to take that time to enjoy him as my own little special gift,” she captioned a photo.

Besides those mentioned in this post, several celebs have successfully hidden a birth from the public and press until the media discovered it or they were ready to introduce the news on their own terms.

Kudos to them!

First time parents-to-be Chrissy Teigen and John Legend had an elegant regal and metallic gold and pink color-themed dinner party baby shower this past weekend while the new book author was in New York City  promoting her new best selling cookbook “Cravings“.

The intimate event for 40 was held atop a shop in the SoHo district of Manhattan and it featured personalized napkin favors, a meal with several courses including kale salad, an assortment of desserts including pink and white horse buggy and ballerina decorated cookies, macrons, petite cupcakes, brownies, flan and more.

Teigen and John wore paper Baby Daddy and Baby Mama crowns and guests got to make their own in an arts and craft room.

I know because see all those people with camera phones in that lower center photo of the collage on the top of this page? They all Instagrammed their pics with the hashtags #LegendBaby,  #BabyLegendNYC and Harper’s Bazaar stalked them all and put them on its website.

Go there for close ups of the photos taken by guests that include our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Brooklyn Decker whose 5-month old son Hank is featured in the lower right corner of the above collage,  model Josh Rotten , event planner Hilary Pereira, celebrity publicist Simon Huck, model and philanthropist Petra Nemcova and modeling exec Lisa Marie Benson.

I’ve never seen a book signing with an open bar of all my drink recipes, frito pies and chicken satays and virtual reality and a tunnel where your entire Instagram life flashes before your eyes. It was insane. Thank you to everyone who came out!! Now I must go into hiding for a little bit to properly incubate and give this little thing a break but what a whirlwind it has been. I couldn’t wish for more right now. Please still tag me in your photos making the recipes, tell me when you love/hate something, ask me anything. I love you guys. Thank you for making these last few months so special and now I promise to slowly get off your gossip sites and televisions because you have to be so annoyed with me! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ A photo posted by chrissy teigen (@chrissyteigen) on

Next time your kid says ‘I’m Bored’, Here are 193 Things for Him to Do

193 things for a bored kid to do

My middle kid is always bored. We have a no TV or video game policy during the school week. We have found that when we let the eldest watch TV and play video games during the week, when he was a kid, that was all he wanted and lived to do. His school work did not come first and his work ethic suffered. As a result, we scaled back TV and video games and eventually banned them altogether Monday thru Thursday. But now the younger kids are having to suffer under the same policy.

So I hear “I’m bored” constantly from the middle kid who finishes his homework pretty quickly and is constantly on the hunt for something to do to occupy his very overactive mind. Thus, it was a no-brainer to get him and his eldest brother together to come up with a list. We also searched the Internet and found some ideas there too. Here is what we came up with:

  1. create a chore chart
  2. roller skate
