This NBC Commentator Doesn’t Think Simone Biles’ Adopted Parents Should be Called ‘Mom’ and ‘Dad’

One NBC commentator is catching a lot of heat from the Adopted families community. Al Trautwig repeatedly refers to the adopted parents of US Olympic gymnast and Gold-Medal hopeful Simone Biles as her grandfather and his wife. While true, after finalizing the adoption, they got a new familial title.

Trautwig doesn’t seem to understand that it doesn’t matter what a family member was to you before adoption, once a child is officially adopted, the parental units on the adoption form become their mom or dad. End of story.

There really is no reason to ever refer to an adopted mom or dad of a child as anything other than that child’s mom and dad.

Biles grandad and his wife adopted Biles and her sister when the girls were taken away from their drug-addicted mom.

Yet, Trautwig defended his rude on-air characterizations after one Twitter member called him on it:

I can appreciate Carrie Goldman of Chicago Now‘s response:

As a journalist and also a mother through adoption, I think that NBC should do a better job of educating their commentators. When Trautwig publicly denies that Ron and Nellie Biles are Simone’s parents, it is a terrible blow to adoptive families everywhere. It threatens the legitimacy of Simone’s own self-identity. It is not Al Trautwig’s place to say whether or not Ron and Nellie are Simone’s parents. His tweet brings back the pain that adoptees feel every time they are told that their mom and dad are not their real parents.

My daughter was born to another mother. She, like Simon Biles, lived in foster care before she came to us. Her dad and I are her parents. To every adoptive mother or father out there, you ARE a parent. You are validated. You are real. Your love and devotion and time and sweat and unconditional love make you a parent. Don’t ask Al Trautwig. Go ask the sons and daughters who love you, who call out your name when they are scared or excited or lost or hopeful or sick or joyful. Adoption is about love and family and so much more than 130 characters in a Tweet.

Trautwig has since deleted the offensive tweet after being dragged by parents and adults who were adopted as children all across the internet. As when I last checked, he is still responding to people on Twitter coming for him. Good luck, dude.

He is the same guy who called another Twitter user’s mom in Israel because he didn’t like what the guy tweeted at him. ‘Can dish it but can’t take it’ much?

And, this is not the first offensive gaffe from an NBC commentator this Olympics which is only a few days old, might I add.

After Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszú blew away her competition in the  400-meter individual medley, broke the world record and scored a gold, commentator Dan Hicks credited her husband for the win.  After she won, the camera cut away to her enthusiastic husband/coach, Shane Tusup. That’s when Hicks added “and there’s the person responsible for her performance”. He too got roasted afterwards.

When will they learn? sigh

Grey’s Anatomy: The TV Cast With Most Adopted Kids

grey's cast

Of all the shows on television, we think the cast of Grey’s Anatomy has some of the most aware and generous parents who have opened up their hearts and homes to many children without parents or proper homes.  Several members of  Grey’s family are also wonderful about raising children of different background and parentage.

While we cannot say definitely if its cast and alums have adopted the most children, but we do know they’re up there in numbers.

For example, currently, we anxiously await the birth of Grey’s alum Katherine Heigl‘s first child. Meanwhile, she and her husband are parenting two beautiful adopted girls, Naleigh from South Korea (adopted in 2009) and Adalaide Marie Hope (adopted in 2012), a mixed-race child from a woman in Louisiana.

Heigl has an adopted sister, Meg, who was born in Korea.

“Josh and I started talking about [adoption] before we were even engaged,”  US Weekly quotes the Knocked Up  star telling Scholastic Parent & Child back in February. “[M]y parents adopted [Meg] three years before I was born. I wanted my own family to resemble the one I came from, so I always knew I wanted to adopt from Korea.”
True to form, Heigl’s soon-to-be-born son will have a similar experience of having older adopted siblings.
Not an adoptive parent, but her former Grey’s co-star Ellen Pompeo is also doing a wonderful job of raising her children of different race.

Pompeo is quoted recently stating that she surrounds her bi-racial daughters with images of empowered African American women.

Pompeo and her husband Chris Ivery are parents to daughters Stella, born September 2009, and Sienna May, born October 2014 via surrogate.

“My daughters are black so it’s very important to me that they see a lot of images of beautiful, powerful, strong black women,” Ellen shares. “Every time there is a black woman on a magazine cover, whether it is Kerry Washington or whoever it is, I make sure that magazine is in my house and on my table. For me, that’s super important.”

It’s also important for the girls to see the Obamas n the spotlight, she relayed.

“I feel really fortunate that they are growing up in a time [in which] the first president my daughter knows is Barack Obama,” Ellen said. “That’s an incredible gift.”

Um doesn’t Chris look a little low key like President Barack Obama tho?

Show producer and writer Shonda Rhimes also has adopted several children. She is solo-parenting and raising two adopted daughters on her own, Harper, Emerson and Beckett (whom she welcomed via a gestational surrogate) ages 13, 3 and 2, respectively.

Bravo!

REVIEW: Bands of Moms Organized “Bad Moms” Movie Nights this Weekend

13892209_10210128684319589_1649939281767325378_n

This weekend, groups of mom friends across the nation gathered en masse to see the new Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell movie Bad Moms which also stars two other of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums, Jada Pinkett Smith and Christina Applegate.

(Moms’ Night Outings included this one and here and even here where someone rented out the entire theater)

The film is about Amy (Kunis), a suburban mom who is married to her college sweetheart, and has two great kids including entitled son Dylan (Emjay Anthony) and an overachieving soccer star daughter, Jane (Oona Laurence) who dreams of getting into an Ivy League school even while still in Middle School.  Amy  is also married to an immature real estate mortgager who is a parenting slacker and leaves Amy to do all the work at home even though she also works part time at a trendy coffee company owned and managed by millennials. At age 32, she is the oldest worker. Oy vey!

SEE TRAILER

As the film begins, Amy relays how she is overwhelmed, underappreciated and constantly late. (We can all relate, well I know I can) Amy has to also battle against meeting up to the high expectations and standards of a trio of perfect moms, led by the PTA President Gwendolyn(Applegate), the Queen B who runs the school, and her sidekick moms Stacy (Pinkett-Smith) and Vicky (Annie Mumolo).

Eventually, she just gives up on trying and befriends frazzled mousey stay-at-home mom KiKi (Bell) and single mom Carla (Kathryn Hahn), the break out star in the film and they cut up.

For a  few days, they sleep in, stop making the kids’ breakfast, skip work, go out to pubs and dance clubs and act out in a supermarket in the most hilarious scene of the film.

That scene is second only to (SPOILER ALERT) the one in a bathroom when Carla and KiKi preps Amy to start dating again after she and her husband take a break from her marriage and Carla uses Kiki to show Amy how to manage an uncircumcised man’s member. It is utter hilarity!

bad moms

I too attended a Bad Moms outing my law school girlfriend Marcie organized. It included happy hour drinks before (which I missed but borrowed a photo from) and night of dancing at a local concert hall to an 80s cover band after. I’d dare say 98% of our theater was filled with women. There were probably several groups of mom groups out. There was lots of talking, popcorn throwing and cutting up in the theater before and the antics were aplenty.

13882102_10210127155481369_4515402680000920396_n

We all agreed afterwards that we have to go see the movie again because we missed so many lines because we were laughing so hard throughout the film.

And what can you expect when the writer/director of The Hangover, Jon Lucas, was behind the film? There is plenty of raunchy and hypersexualized over-the-top slapstick humor that works and a very generous use of the F-bomb. It is rated R for a reason and you should definitely not think of taking your kids with you to see this.

Again, as I stated above, Hahn is the most memorable. Every line that comes out of her mouth elicited belly laughs. It’s because she doesn’t give a kitty about what others think, is sexually free and liberated and is that ride-or-die pal that has your back. She’s that friend from college who would hold back your pony tail while you hurl in the throne after a wild night out, but who has grown up and is now solo-parenting a 6 feet tall middle school jock kid.

Hahn steals ever scene she is in.

bad mom poster

My girl Bell does a phenomenal job as a docile mom with a controlling husband who eventually grows some cohones and stands up to him by the end of the movie. She delivers some zingers that are effective because they are unexpected but delivered with perfect comedic timing.

The movie climaxes as Amy decides to compete with Gwendolyn for PTA President after Gwendolyn does something that negatively impacts Jane.

The movie is The Hangover meets Mean Girls.  It has the usual comedy movie tropes but it is successful.

I recommend you get your mom pals together and organize your own Bad Moms movie outing. The last time I attended a movie that got so many groups of women out was when Sex and The City movie came out. I wasn’t a fan of Fifty Shades so I missed all the Fifty Shades movie night outings.

But Bad Moms is definitely a must-see! Fun times!

All the Models are Pregnant This Summer

models

Models Behati Prinsloo, Bryiana Dyrdek, Bar Refaeli are expecting.

We are having yet another Summer when a bunch of Victoria Secret models are expecting.

This round, Israeli model Bar Refeali, South African model Behati Prinsloo and former Playboy Playmate Bryiana Dyrdek are all pregnant.

We checked in on them recently and yup! They still look like they just swallowed a watermelon while every other part of their body remains “model” like! Ha!

By the way! We never posted about Dyrdek but I really dug the way her husband, professional skateboarder and MTV personality (RidiculousnessRob Dyrdek announced their news back in March. They posed in front of balloons, kissing while showing off the ultrasound.

How Our Fave Celeb Moms Celebrated the Fourth of July Weekend

chrissy teigen

We’re baaaack!!!!!

We hope everyone enjoyed their Fourth of July/Independence Day weekend. I know I did! It was actually great not having to post or worry about content for few days while the blog was down for maintenance since Saturday. I got a chance to relax a little bit. I came up for air to surf the social media accounts of some of the celebrity women we’ve featured on the blog over the years. I literally got lost in the great pics and some of the off-the-wall comments these women get. Some of it is really mind-blowing, a few very mean, but mostly supportive and uplifting.

Here is a little roundup of a few of them and how they celebrated over the weekend.

First ‘Mom Jeans’ and Now ‘Mom Hair’ is the new Prejorative

portrait-of-a-girl-1344645_960_720

Just when “mom jeans” have become on trend, here comes a brand new fashion article finding another way to paint moms as uncool, doudy, unsexy and unflattering.

This time, the culprit is a New York Times Style section article on so-called “Mom Hair”.

The piece, “Mom Hair: It exists. Now here’s what to do about it“, described the way some new moms wear their hair after suffering from temporary pregnancy related  hair loss: “longer-in-back, slightly-shorter-in-front bob,” calling it “inescapably frumpy”.

It includes quotes from new moms who are ashamed of their hair and tips on how to have better hair.

And of course, the writer compared “mom hair” to the mom jeans.

Needless to say, it triggered a bit of backlash in the blogosphere.

Writing in the popular parenting blog Scary MommyOmaha, Nebraska mom Ashley Austrew criticized the article as condescending and called it “mommy shaming.”

“I don’t know about you but I’m sick of having the word ‘mom’ continually used as a synonym for uncool, unflattering, unhip and sexless,” Austrew wrote.

Amen! Tell ’em, Ashley.

In comments in social media, other women were speaking their minds.

“I’ve reprioritised my to do list: 1. Get rid of mom hair. 2. Love, feed, bathe, care for my children. Thanks, NYT!!” one fan wrote on Facebook.

“Enough already. Know what my ‘mom hair’ looks like? It looks like the hair of a woman who gets up at five, who works hard all day, who goes to bed and who might remember to remove her ponytail holder. Enough already. How about lifting each other up for once?” said another.

Some were upset about the part that suggested post part in moms wear their hair longer to hide their chubbier faces.

Some called the reaction an over-reaction but at the end of the day, we all can see where the frustration can come from every day moms being expected to look like Kate Middleton or Miranda Kerr post baby  but without  having the nanny and personal stylist on staff to help duplicate those women’s styles.

Of course Blake Lively’s Movie Promo Maternity Style is Fab

blake lively

We covered Blake Lively‘s fab early second trimester maternity style last month and the talented actress hasn’t stopped rocking fierce looks as she continues to promote various movie projects while out and about.

This week,  the Kat star hit up several talk shows, starting on Monday, June 20 when she went casual fab in a Madewell Denim jacket over a sunny yellow Jenny Packham maxi dress.

That same day, she late sported a cute  blush colored feminine lace Elie Saab dress, Christian Louboutin‘s “Baby Sweet Charity” Calfskin Leather shoulder bag and a pair of hot silver Suart Weitzman leg wrap sandals.  The heels are a bit too high for our taste for a preggers mama-to-be but they’re still the cutest.

At night, she did the late night talk show circuit in an electric blue Cushnie et Ochs bandage dress accented with a Salvatore Ferragamo purse, and Louboutin Piagalle Follies Floral pumps.  The dress is down from $1395 to $558 at The Outnet now.  That’s practically a steal.

The Gossip Girl alum started the next day, Tuesday in a flirty Michael Kors dress with Alison Lou earrings and a pair of silver metallic Louboutins.

And then, she changed into a crimson Oscar de La Renta dress that showed off her new curves for real.

At the premier of The Shallows, Lively looked fab again in a super cute black and white Carolina Herrera dress,  Loraine Schwartz and again with the Christian Louboutin purse and shoes.

Lively and her husband screen actor Ryan Reynolds are expecting their second child. They are mom to one-year old daughter James Reynolds.

True Fact: When Working Moms Try to Have it All, They Sometimes Break Down

workingmom

Katrina Alcorn was a success working mother of three at a tech firm but increasingly found herself unable to handle the demands of trying to have it all. She had a reliable spouse, healthy kids, and a great job but having to juggle day care, demanding clients, sick kids and business trips was also daunting. Then one day, a co-worker walked in on her while she was pumping breast milk. On another occasion, a male employee sent out a company-wide email complaining about being grossed out by her “bodily fluids” being in the office fridge.

Then the panic attacks began.  They led to anxiety and depression over her inability to cope, balance and “lean in” all at the same time. But she felt guilty about complaining. After all, it was a privilege to be a working mom, right?

When women demand wanting the career and family,  there are the voices out there that say having kids is a luxury of the rich.  This same chorus claims that women should be able to stay at home with their children or hire help, and if they ask for anything like sanity, self-care and wellness, then that is pure “entitlement”.

Alcorn lost it. She suffered a nervous breakdown while driving to Target to buy diapers. The San Francisco Bay area mom eventually quit her job, spent a year decompressing and lived off of savings. When she emerged healthier and more mentally stable, she penned the book about the ugly secret of the working mom.

Maxed Out: American Moms on the Brink” tells working moms three things:  You’re not alone. It’s not your fault. And it doesn’t have to be this way.

“We’re expected to do our jobs as if we don’t have children — and then raise our children as if we don’t have jobs,” Alcorn told The Week. “If you think about the model of the ideal mother, it’s the person who sacrifices everything for her child. The ideal worker is someone who can drop everything and go on a business trip at a moment’s notice, and who can stay late — not leave at 5 o’clock to pick up kids. So if you’re trying to be both, then you are faking it.”

Alcorn offers tips in her book and on her blog, WorkingMomsBreak.com.

She admitted getting frustrated by the trolls that come out when ever she writes about balance.

“As soon as anyone talks about motherhood being difficult or society having an obligation to mothers, the trolls come out en masse…and it makes me realize how much we need to talk about this,” she  added.  “I actually had a lot of advantages…the point is that if I couldn’t make it work, imagine what it’s like for single parents, or people living paycheck to paycheck!”

True that. And as many know, even “Lean In” author Sheryl Sandberg had to walk back her own advice in her book after husband passed away and she realized herself first hand that not having a spouse makes all that “leaning in” extra difficult.

It’s not as easy as they all say, so we really need to give moms a break!

Princess Charlotte Broke the Internet This Week

princess charlotte1

Princess Charlotte trended this week when she appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with her parents Duchess Catherine (nee Kate Middleton), dad Prince William and her brother Prince George to watch grandmom Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday parade.

The 13-month old was adorable in a pink dress matching her mom’s Philip Treacy hat at the jubilee event. Her bro, my boy Georgie stood out himself wearing the precise same outfit dad William wore to his uncle Prince Harry’s christening back in 1984. George turns 2 next month.

The youngest princess knows how to work a crowd. She actually waved to the crowd and looked quite comfortable in front of all those people.

Those royals know how to hold onto an old ceremonial outfit. Both George and Charlotte wore a replica of Williams’ Christening gown. (smile)
