Man ‘Low-Key’ Plays Pokémon Go While Wife is In Labor

dad baby

Pokémon Go is addictive for adults, including men whose wives are in labor at the hospital. Last month, dad-to-be Jonathan Theriot screenshot a Pokémon sighting by his wife Jessica who was in labor at the time awaiting a C-section delivery.

He shared the screenshot on Imgur with the caption, “When your wife is about to have a baby and a Pokemon shows up and you have to low-key catch it…”

If you haven’t heard the online buzz surrounding the release of Pokémon Go, you’ve probably been living under a rock for the past week.

This popular smartphone app, created by the makers of Nintendo Gaming systems, blends a fictional virtual world with real life. The goal is to catch as many different Pokémon as you can by literally walking around with a Google Maps-esque screen as your guide. The creators plant the creatures that originated in an s Japanese cartoon that was wildly popular in the US in the 1990s.

The game has been the subject of many news stories including stories of a guy getting caught cheating by his girlfriend, a guy who quit his job as a bartender to catch them all, people falling off of cliffs and getting shot while playing the game in people’s yards and being charged with trespassing on zoo grounds while playing. The game is also being used by thieves to rob victims playing the game and not paying attention of their surroundings.

The game has positive benefits as many parents report that their children now want to go for long walks. In order to make a Poke egg hatch, you have to walk it. One guy reported losing weight playing it and a shut in finally got outside because he had to in order to play the game. A couple of marines playing the game noticed a suspicious guy while playing and helped detain the man until police arrived.

Meanwhile, several national monuments, museums and landmarks like The Arlington Cemetery, The National Holocaust Museum and the Auschwitz Museum have asked people to not play the game in their locale.

This week, Niantic, the division that makes the game said it will start removing historic places from the game to discourage people from being disrespectful.

And now, The Theriots’ baby, a third daughter, Ireland Sage Theriot, was born later that morning of the photo.

Keisha Knight-Pulliam Breaks Her Silence On Her Troubled Marriage

keisha knight-pulliam

Actress Keisha Knight-Pulliam has spoken out about her marriage and husband Ed Hartwell‘s decision to file for divorce only 8 months of marriage.

A few days after the news went public, the former child star sat down with Entertainment Tonight exclusively to tell her side of the story and explain how blindsided she was by the news.

“It’s hurtful,” the Spellman College grad shared. “I knew I couldn’t be silent, because this isn’t about money. This isn’t about fame. This isn’t about social media likes or follows. This is about my character — my integrity as a woman being attacked — and that’s not OK.”

She said her husband, a former NFL Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens player, told her about filing for divorce via text message.

He noted on court papers that “irreconcilable differences”  were his reason for seeking an end to his marriage. He also asked that Knight-Pulliam soon-to-be-born daughter  be subjected to a paternity test after birth.

“This is his baby,” Keshia told ET. “He wanted more children. He was excited once he found out that we were having a little girl. There was never a question about that. … [At] no point after we got pregnant was there an issue of the fact that we’re having a baby.”

She also revealed said that she was the one who wanted to leave first after discovering he had cheated but she gave him a second chance after he plead with her to stay.

“Early on in my marriage when I was faced with this, I was ready to leave. It’s not OK,” Pulliam says. “In the process, I found out I was pregnant. And I had to take another hard look and decide if I wanted to try to work through this and forgive him for the sake of the child. Like, I had divorce papers ready. I presented it to him. … Once I was pregnant I did decide to give him that one last chance.”

“The part that hurt me the most when he filed for divorce was that he had asked me to give him another chance, and I was willing to do that and forgive him, for our family,” she adds.

Knight-Pulliam says she is okay with the separation but still interested in co-parenting.

“There’s a baby in the middle of this,” she stressed. “Regardless, if we don’t want to be married, that’s fine, because we agree on that. But this baby is what’s important.”

We’re thinking of her and the baby and family. Hopefully, she will pull through.

Study: Close to 30% of Women Who’ve Had IVF Conceive Naturally Later

newborn

Women who have IVF/ICSI infertility treatments have a 29% chance of conceiving naturally within six years of the cessation of treatments. These are the findings of an Internet survey conducted by a group of gynaecologists presented in the journal Human Fertility.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence estimates that one in seven couples in the United Kingdom are affected by infertility, with so-called ‘assisted reproductive technologies’ (ARTs) such as IVF and ICSI being widely employed. These treatments are emotionally and financially demanding, and not all couples will achieve a baby through these methods.

Research into conception rates after these treatments – whether successful or unsuccessful – has been limited, but the authors hope that their findings will be useful for counselling and reassuring women about their chances of natural conception after infertility treatment.

The researchers contacted users of an independent fertility website asking members who had received IVF/ICSI treatments to participate in their anonymous survey. From the 403 applicable responses (from a total of 484 responses), they found that of the 96 respondents who did not conceive through the course of the treatments, 34 subsequently conceived, leading to 30 live births. Of the 307 who conceived during the treatments, 84 also conceived post-treatment.

Lead author Samuel Marcus said “regardless of the outcome of IVF and ICSI treatments – whether the patients conceived or not – there is about a 30% likelihood of conceiving over a 6 year period.”

The authors do acknowledge some limitations in their paper, specifically that it relied on self-reporting, and that a selection bias may have been caused by pregnant couples being more willing to respond than disappointed couples.

In the study, the authors found that 87% of the spontaneous conceptions occurred within two years of finishing the infertility treatments, and over the six-year period following treatments 22% delivered a live baby. Whilst many couples may see treatments as IVF as a ‘last resort’ the researchers hope that their findings may offer hope to those in this unfortunate position.

Professor Allan Pacey, Editor in Chief of Human Fertility said “This is really useful information that doctors can use to counsel patients about their chances of pregnancy after undergoing assisted conception. It certainly suggests that there remains a reasonable chance of spontaneous pregnancy after IVF or ICSI has been attempted.”

10 Well-meaning but annoying things You can Say to a New Mom

Skeptical-woman-Shutterstock-800x430

Adding a new member to the family is supposed to be one of the most exhilarating, rewarding times of your entire life, and for the most part, it certainly is. There are times, though, when the prying questions and rude inquiries of others serve to momentarily spoil the mood of baby bliss. Most of the people who ask these inconsiderate questions aren’t even aware of how rude they’re being; in fact, they feel as if they’re only being nice. There’s just something about a baby that makes people feel as if it’s acceptable to meddle in a new mom’s affairs, and these are 10 of the most irritating things that regularly come out of those busy mouths.

  1. “When Are You Due?” – To the chagrin of many a first-time mom, it’s not uncommon to still be wearing maternity jeans for weeks or even months after the birth of a child. When well-meaning passersby and casual acquaintances inquire about the remaining length of a pregnancy weeks after delivery, it can just compound the frustration of dealing with stubborn baby weight along with the demands of new motherhood.
  2. “Are You Breastfeeding?” – There’s no doubt about the fact that breast is best, but that doesn’t mean that breastfeeding is feasible or even possible for all new mothers. There are plenty of extenuating circumstances that can affect a woman’s decision to breastfeed or go with formula, up to and including a simple disinclination to nurse. Regardless of others’ feelings on the subject, how a new mother feeds her baby is ultimately her own choice.
  3. “Did You Have a Natural Childbirth?” – Few medical procedures open the door to invasive questions like a discussion about childbirth. Everything from anesthesia to bodily functions seems to be on the table and a valid topic of conversation, regardless of how invasive or personal those questions might be.
  4. “Are You Going Back to Work?” – Some new moms will go back to work, and others will stay home with their children. Whichever choice they make, there is someone on the opposite side of the fence that will find fault with their decision.
  5. “Isn’t Motherhood Great?” – For some women, new motherhood is a glorious and life-affirming experience that brings them more joy than anything they’ve ever known. Others, however, suffer from the very real symptoms of postpartum depression and may not feel like motherhood is something so altogether grand, after all. Excited inquiries about how wonderful they’re finding the world of parenting are great when they’re echoed, but they’re just hurtful and awkward for those moms that are struggling to settle into their new role.
  6. “Is That Your Grandchild?” – Changes in the social structure and advances in modern medicine have also brought about changes to the face of modern motherhood. These days, it’s not uncommon for a woman to give birth well into her forties, leading plenty of confused onlookers to come to the conclusion that she’s looking after a grandchild.
  7. “Did You Adopt?” – There’s more than one way to become a mother, and one of them is adoption. While there’s no shame in adopting, there are plenty of adoptive parents who would prefer to avoid the subject. Asking pointed questions about the origin of a child serves only to satisfy curiosity, and can be quite upsetting to a new parent.
  8. “Are You the Nanny?” – Genetics work out in strange ways sometimes, leaving a biracial child looking far more like one parent than another. Being regularly confused for the nanny of a baby that more heavily favors his father is not only insensitive, but can get tiring very quickly for a new mom.
  9. “When Are You Going to Have Another?” – When a baby is still in diapers, the last thing that most mothers are thinking about is adding another baby to the mix. Just as it’s rude to prod newlywed couples about when they’re planning to have children, it’s also very intrusive to ask a new mother about her plans to have another while her first is still an infant.
  10. “Are You Getting Enough Sleep?” – In short, the answer will always be “no.” Asking a new mom if she’s getting enough sleep can feel like a kind of commiseration, but it’s also a question she’s been fielding since the moment she brought her child home from the hospital. Reminding her of the sleep she isn’t getting is more likely to bring on gritted teeth and short replies than anything else.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are Not the First to Hide a Birth from the Public for Weeks

goslings

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling pulled a Neve Campbell: totally hid the fact they had delivered a baby until discovered by prying paparazzi.

In 2012, Campbell was spotted by the paps playing with her baby 6 weeks after delivering her at a local park.

TMZ got a hold of the birth certificate for Mendes and Gosling’s second child, daughter, Amanda Lee Gosling. The new arrival was welcomed last month on April 29 at the St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

The extremely private couple did a great job of keeping the news secret.

The couple also have a two year old daughter named Esmerelda who has never been revealed to the public, or had her photo shared publicly.  She was born on Friday, September 12, 2014, but that news was discovered too after some news agency’s did some creative snooping.

It is common for celebs who spend their entire lives in the public eye to shield certain part of their lives from the press.

We’ve never ever seen Kerry Washington‘s daughter, Isabelle Amarachi Asomugha, either.

And in 2012, Dido only mentioned she had given birth to her first child with husband Rohan Gavin in December that year, months after actually delivering her son in the Summer.

Last month, reality TV star and swimsuit designer Draya Michele famously did not disclose she had given birth until after she released all of her maternity portraits via her Instagram account. She said she wanted a few moments with herself and the baby before letting the world know.

“I had him last week and I just wanted to take that time to enjoy him as my own little special gift,” she captioned a photo.

Besides those mentioned in this post, several celebs have successfully hidden a birth from the public and press until the media discovered it or they were ready to introduce the news on their own terms.

Kudos to them!

Here are 10 Reasons to consider Hypnobirthing

Bellyitch Rewind

labor hypnobirth

In the May 15, 2013 Vogue India edition, Beyonce describes her delivery of daughter Blue Ivy last January 2012 using words that sounds as if she used Hypnobirthing techniques.

“I had a very strong connection with my child,” she revealed. ” I felt like when I was having contractions, I envisioned my child pushing through a very heavy door. And I imagined this tiny infant doing all the work, so I couldn’t think about my own pain… We were talking. I know it sounds crazy, but I felt a communication.”

If you are expecting around this Mother’s Day and haven’t yet considered Hypnobirthing as an option, consider these tips from  Las Vegas headliner and expert hypnotist Marc Savard and his wife, Joanna. The couple employed the method to deliver their three daughters all natural, drug-free and will again this August for baby number 4.  Here are 10 reasons they provide for why you should consider using the hypnobirthing technique.

  1. Shorter and more comfortable labor time. Pain comes from the perspective of fear, which creates constricting hormones and shallow breathing, causing pain. Women who practice hypnosis in preparation for childbirth learn comfortable relaxing breathing techniques, and replace fear perspective with expectations of a pleasant child birth, allowing endorphins, feel good hormones, to be released. This allows the mind and body to work together, allowing for a shorter and easier labor.
  2. Pain free or significantly reduced pain during labor.Women who experience a hypnobirth have a different perspective of pain. Instead of feeling pain, women feel sensations such as tightening and pressure. The use of relaxing breathing techniques releases endorphins, which relaxes the body further and allows mothers to mindfully work with their bodies through delivery of their baby. Although hypnobirthing does not promise a pain-free childbirth, women who choose to do hypnobirth never report excruciating pain like most other forms of labor techniques.
  3. Allows a deeper connection with your body and baby during labor. The use of drugs during childbirth disconnects mothers with their own body and their baby. With hypnobirth, there are no drugs needed, so mom is aware of every part of her body, to a super-conscious level. She can feel exactly what her body needs to do to ease the delivery of her baby. This allows the mother and her baby to experience a pleasant delivery and give a warm welcoming for baby into this world.
  4. No need for medications for recovery time. Mothers who learn relaxation techniques and learn a new perspective of sensations in the body not only have no need for medications through recovery time, but also have a shorter recovery time.
  5. Visualization and relaxation skills learned can help pr event complications and tearing.bThe use of the imagination and visualization during childbirth is extremely useful. When the mind creates an image, the body will naturally create an organic change. This tool allows mothers to work with their mind and body together to prevent tearing or even turn a breeched baby.
  6. Less trauma to the baby during birth allows new baby to feed and sleep better. Babies who are born will less trauma from relaxed childbirth experiences are more relaxed babies themselves. This allows them to more easily bond with their parents, sleep better, feed better, and are all around less fussy babies.
  7. Significantly reduced post-partum depression. Mothers who are more in touch with their mind and body through learning hypnosis techniques have shown greatly reduced post-partum depression. A peaceful childbirth released natural instincts from mother, as she is connected to her child from conception through birth. This gives her strength and clarity and strength when she must care for the child outside the womb.
  8. No drugs in Mom’s body during labor or after means a healthier, happier baby. Babies who do not receive drugs through their mother’s blood stream during labor as more aware and connected to the world when they are born. These babies are much healthier by not being exposed to drugs and chemicals upon their arrival. This allows their immune system and nervous system to be stronger as it develops on its own. Healthier baby = happier baby!
  9. Confidence and personal empowerment gained through delivery is priceless. Mothers who experience hypnobirths learn to be incredibly confident, empowered and in control of their own thoughts, emotions, and sensations. These tools are priceless not only for childbirth, but for being a mom, being a woman, and being a human.
  10. Relaxation skills learned for hypnobirthing are great tools for being a Mom! Being a mother can be exhausting! The relaxation skills are incredible tools for staying calm when your little angel does something to frustrate you, or even when you have trouble falling asleep. Hypnosis teaches useful tools for life!

Hopefully these tips have convinced you to give it a try.

‘Pregnancy Not Part of Uniform,’ Saks Fifth Avenue D&G MakeUp Counter Employee’s Discrimination Law Suit Claims

saks
Before Tiffany Kantrowitz got pregnant she says a supervisor discouraged her from the idea, telling the Procter & Gamble Co‘s Saks Fifth Avenue Dolce & Gabbana shop make up girl that “pregnancy is not part of the uniform.”

That supervisor’s statements were among allegations listed in a lawsuit Kantrowitz brought last Friday after she was fired last February 2015 after actually getting pregnant, Kantrowitz stated. She claims she was penalized for asking to take breaks to get off of her feet.

Neither Dolce and Gabbana nor Saks was named in the lawsuit which alleges P&G violated federal Pregnancy Discrimination Act and a similar New York City law.

Instead of accommodating Kantrowitz’s request, the lawsuit said, P&G forced her to take breaks that were deducted from the leave time she was entitled to under the Family and Medical Leave Act. She says she planned to take leave only after her baby was born.

But P&G said she was fired for taking “tester” items for personal use, according to the lawsuit. But P&G encouraged its cosmetics staff to do so, the suit says, and never warned Kantrowitz against it during her time with the company.

Pregnancy discrimination has been a top issue for groups that focus on employment protections for women, along with pay parity and wage increases in industries that employ disproportionate numbers of women.

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that United Parcel Service Inc improperly denied a pregnant driver’s request not to lift heavy packages. The court, in a 6-3 decision, said employers must offer legitimate business reasons to deny accommodations to pregnant employees and cannot simply claim it would be expensive or inconvenient.

5 Tax Credits for 2016 Parents Should Know

child tax credit

This year, we all got an extension for the deadline to file our taxes because the traditional date falls on the District of Columbia’s holiday, Emancipation Day which celebrates the end of slavery in DC. So instead of April 15, this year taxes are due on April 29, 2016!

So as you prepare to file and head off to the tax man last minute, here are 5 credits parents need to know about and should consider claiming this year.

1. Exemptions for dependents

You can claim your new baby as a dependent, which, for 2015, exempts $4,000 of your hard-earned money from taxation. For 2016, this number actually goes up to $4,050. This exemption is phased out at certain income levels. For 2015 taxes, the limit is $258,250 for single parents and $309,000 for married couples filing jointly. For 2016, the limits are $259,400 and $311,300, respectively. Similarly, you can’t claim an exemption if you’re subject to the Alternative Minimum Tax.

2. Child Tax Credit

Depending on your income, you may be able to claim a $1,000 tax credit every year until your child reaches age 17. Better yet, you can start claiming the credit the year your child is born, even if that doesn’t happen until December. In other words, if you had a baby on Dec. 31, 2015, you can still snag that $1,000 for 2015. Sweet!

Remember, unlike with  deductions, credits lower your tax bill dollar for dollar. However, similar to  exemptions for dependents, the child tax credit phases out at higher income levels, though you cannot even claim it until you’ve earned more than $75,000 if you’re single or $110,000 if you’re married and filing jointly. The credit has the ability to reduce your tax liability to zero, but it is not refundable, meaning, it cannot count towards a refund from the IRS! Booo!!

3. Earned Income Tax Credit

Don’t worry those of you in the low to moderate income bracket, the Earned Income Tax Credit makes you eligible for up to 3,359. However, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a tax benefit for those with with only one qualifying child. And the EITC is a fully refundable credit, which means that if it’s more than large enough to reduce your tax liability to zero, then you’ll receive any remaining credit money as a refund from the IRS.

Yippeee!

4. Child and Dependent Care Credit

Childcare costs increases each year and makes up the chunk of most family budgets. The Child and Dependent Care Credit lets you claim up to 35% of the cost of qualifying child care expenses (such as a day care center or summer camp) up to a maximum of $3,000 for one child under 13, or $6,000 for two or more children under 13.  For example, if you have an infant in day care and pay $5,000 per year, you can claim up to $1,050 (35% of the $3,000 maximum) as a tax credit depending on your income.

Lower income people who earn less than $15,000 can qualify for the full 35%. That percentage falls by 1% for every additional $2,000 of income you earn until it reaches 20% for an income of $43,000 or more. You must have earned income to qualify for the credit, and if you’re married, you must file a joint tax return. Additionally, you must have paid a child care provider for the purpose of enabling you and your spouse to either work or look for work.

Unlike some other credits, this one doesn’t have an income limit, however families with Stay-At-Home moms who have a nanny caring for the kids can NOT take this credit. It is also refundable.

5. Adoption credit

If you adopted a kid last year, you can claim up $13,400 per child for qualified adoption expenses.  This credit phases out, depending on the income at $201,010 which is a higher income phase out level compared to the income level for the child tax and child care credits. Though this credit was once refundable, that’s no longer the case . However, any credit in excess of your tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years.

Of course, keeping track of all these tax breaks could prove challenging when you’re juggling the dozens of daily tasks that come with raising children. But when you sit down to do your taxes this year, it pays to see whether you’re eligible for any of them, because any amount of money can go a long way toward diapers, school supplies, and the ever-growing list of supplies you’ll need to navigate the wild and crazy journey that is parenthood.

For the Anniversary of The Bellyitch 100, We’re Giving it Away FREE!

bellyitch ptomo

This blog launched in 2007 as an online journal to chronicle my third and last pregnancy with my daughter, Gabrielle (who we call GiGi).

Eventually, it grew in favor and popularity among moms-to-be and started to stand out on its own as a source for celebrity pregnancy news, information and images.

It also gained widespread acclaim for its annual listing and summary of the most expensive baby strollers, diaper bags and luxury cribs.

The Bellyitch Most Expensive.

The features brought readers from far and wide who were curious about the items wealthy and affluent families purchase for their babies and it became a go-t0 resource of the top and most posh baby items loved by the rich, powerful, famous and in between.

Every two years, I would pore through hundreds of paper and online brochures of top companies and hand-selected those that skimmed the cream of the top. I selected those items that I personally noticed were coveted and used by celebrities and Madison Ave or Beverly Hills wives and their nannies. Those that topped the price bracket in each genre usually also made the cut as did those that were manufactured using the best quality materials, well-constructed, durable, double stitched and clearly took quite some time to assemble.

Readers, fans and voyeurs of the fab life enjoyed the chance to gawk at the favorite items that their favorite celebrity loved the most, what they outfitted themselves in while pregnant, which strollers they pushed their posh tots in, how they outfitted their celebrity babies, which exquisite piece of crib furniture their newborns napped in and what “it” bag they flung over their shoulders while out and about with baby dodging the paparazzi.

In 2012, I noticed that a few websites also started to list the most expensive items in blog posts so I decided to finally stake a claim in the market by penning an eBook. It was published in 2013 as a giveaway to readers and then I sold it. But on the 3 year anniversary of the launch of the book, I am sharing it again for FREE!

You can get it HERE for FREE!

I have not since returned to the ‘most expensive’ baby items genre and have conceded it to others out there who do similar round ups. Therefore, this book will not include the more recent companies that have launched since 2013 like 4 Moms and others.

In the Bellyitch 100; we’ve arranged 20 of the top brands in each category: strollers, diaper bags, cribs, infant clothing and maternity clothes.
