Over 800,000 workers are out of a job and waiting for the federal government shutdown to end while bills pile up and they scramble for ways to cut costs. Many are taking advantage of grocery giveaways and free meals but what about the stuff in the home that are piled up unused?

There are several places where you can sell your stuff. There is always eBay which was a pioneer in online sales of used items but which can still be time-consuming to set up. Now we have several mobile apps that have helped people bring in major bucks.

The following excerpt from sites like Techilicious may be helpful and talk about 8 places to sell your old stuff

1. Decluttr

Decluttr is a mobile app that provides a fast, easy and free way to sell and Buy CDs, DVDs, Games, Books, Mobile Phones and Tech.

People have made full time income from this site. It functions similar to to eBay in that it allows people to buy and sell clothing and accessories with ease making it an ideal platform to offload some of the unwanted gifts during the holiday season.

Since launching in 2011, it has transformed into a community of five million sellers, who so far have been paid out $1 billion, according to Poshmark.

There are dozens of fashion reselling sites out there, but Vinted offers an additional feature: the option to swap items without incurring any fees.

If you prefer to make some cold hard cash, it’s also an easy option for putting stuff up for sale. While there are plenty of legitimate and reasonably lucrative ways to make money at home, there are some scammers who are out to take your money.

For local sales apps, never agree to meet a buyer in a remote location and go with a friend to avoid being robbed or scammed.

If you have an old vehicle you are looking to unload, look for these signs on the road an in local listings that read ” we buy junk cars near you ” and see what type of deal they’re willing to offer and compare to Carmax or other established platforms.

10 Easy Valentine’s Day Crafts

valentine's day crafts for kids

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and soon you’ll be scrambling to find activities for your little ones to do while celebrating the day together! Here are a few ideas to get you going.

  1. Make heart shaped pancakes – Make heart shaped pancakes for breakfast! Put pancake batter into a squeeze bottle and draw heart pancakes on the griddle! You can also cut sandwiches, deli meats, and fruits into heart shapes using cookie cutters. Creating heart shaped cupcakes or muffins is simple, just drop a marble or rolled up piece of tinfoil between the baking liner and muffin tin before baking to create an indent in the finished product, it will look just like a heart!
  2. Create a conversation heart wreath – Cut the middle out of a paper plate to create a ring. Have your children help you cut out hearts and write short messages on them such as “I love you” or “You rock” and glue the hearts onto the ring to create a conversation heart wreath. Be creative with your phrases and make them special to your family.
  3. Make your own valentines – Younger children will usually have a party in their classroom to celebrate Valentine’s Day with their classmates, so take some time to help your child create their own cards. They don’t have to be fancy, all you need is some construction paper, glitter glue, stickers, doilies, and adhesive to jump start the creativity in your child. Encourage your child to be creative and let them create whatever they want to, the cards don’t all have to be the same as long as there is one for every child in their class.
  4. Valentine’s Day scramble – Post a piece of paper on the wall that has the words “Valentine’s Day” on it and see how many words you can create from those letters, adjusting to the age of the children around you. How many words can you find? You could also add the traditional candy heart phrases and see what additional words you can make using those letters.
  5. Hold a Valentine’s Day dance party – Invite your neighbors over for a fun, family friendly dance party! Decorate the room with streamers and balloons, choose a few fun songs together, and get ready to dance!
  6. Themed worksheets – A quick search online will turn up dozens of Valentine’s Day themed worksheets, from math sheets to crosswords, so you can easily find something meet your child’s needs.
  7. Love themed books – Hit up the library for books with a Valentine’s Day or love theme; most libraries will have seasonally appropriate books on a separate shelf, which makes finding them easy. Check a few out and read them together!
  8. Create coupon books for family members – Talk about what love is and what it means and then discuss various coupons you could create to show family members that you care about them. Offer to walk the dog for free, give a back rub, have one on one time, play a game together or offer to sweep the floor. The receiver can then choose when to redeem the coupons. Coupon books are a great way for kids to be able to give back to the family without a monetary contribution.
  9. Go pink and red! – Create a pink and red theme! Pink lemonade, strawberry milk, cupcakes with pink frosting, watermelon, beets, strawberries, and apples are all great pink and red foods to offer for snack time.
  10. Make a paper heart chain – Use your cutting and gluing skills to create a chain of hearts to hang up in your house! You can either create a chain by cutting hearts out like you would with paper dolls or cut out hearts together and tape or staple them together to create a chain of unique hearts. Hang them where everyone can enjoy them.

Children love to celebrate holidays and Valentine’s Day is an especially fun holiday to celebrate together. It’s a great time to discuss what love and family means and why it’s so important to recognize it together.

It’s time to use those gift cards you got for Christmas!  Since 2005, some $45.7 billion has been floating around in unused gift card balances, according to Finder!

We can guess why. Life is Busy. We are Forgetful.  Don’t join the statistic! Avoid hesitating on spending your gift card!

I recommend you get on Amazon and quickly order something you would ordinarily NOT get for yourself!

It is an excellent excuse to gift yourself something novel, fun, quirky or just different.

Here are 7 items I’ve seen, purchased, used and looked up to see if they sell them on Amazon and they do! Sweet!

We love Blast’s vintage “Plug and Play” video game that comes with a wireless controller and features 8-20 classic video game titles like Centipede, Millipede, Yar’s Revenge, Asteroids, Missile Command, Pitfall, River Raid, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Galaga and Dig Dug. We picked one up at Target for like $25.00 on sale. Online it’s at Amazon.com for just $18! My husband and I played for hours with our kids on Christmas Eve! So fun!!! Thanks AtGames for gifting us a controller as well!

2. Coffee Lovers – I have been eyeing KRUPS’  Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder for a while now and it’s down to $15! I got one for Christmas and I’m hoping it saves me money on Starbucks! Oy vey! LOL!!

4. Future seekers – Going in 2019, a lot of people have big dreams and hopes of making the next year better than the last. I’m a fan of astrology and birth order and the zodiac and I can say emphatically that I got my kickstart going thoroughly through the pages of Mecca Woods‘ book “Astrology for Happiness and Success!” ($10.39)  I not only perused Woods’ very practical tips, delivered in a casual conversational tone for my sign, Virgo, I did for my children’s and husband’s as well. I found the career and wellness guidance extremely relevant and they appear so personalized to me! The book is wonderfully sectioned and organized making it a super easy read! Cardi B Breastfeeds A Baby in New Controversial Video

In her newly released music video for her latest hit single, “Money“, rapper Cardi B promotes breastfeeding by featuring shots of herself nursing an infant. Well more likely it is a doll and not her 6-month old daughter Kulture with estranged hubby Offset.

The shots in the video that was dropped on Friday, December 21 of her holding a baby to her breast dressed in high fashion couture amidst is set among  abundant glorious conspicuous consumption and female body glorification!

https://twitter.com/cardibthe_queen/status/1076206874243055622

The video is visually stimulating and the ornate costuming and setting inside a bank and I think a museum is bold but nothing you wouldn’t expect from a woman on top of her game and with a very generous music video budget.

She pays homage to photographer Thierry Mugler’s 1999 Playboy shoot, and Lil Kim while pole dancing and playing the piano naked.

People on Twitter noted it is reminiscent of Rihanna’s “Pour It Up” and Beyonce’s “Partition” videos.

It is definitely got people with talking with half of the people I saw on Twitter saying she is personifying feminism, empowering sex workers via all the images of strippers, while normalizing breastfeeding and the message that a woman can be a mom, career woman and have it all.

Others are saying the breastfeeding images juxtaposed with so much “T &A” sets back the movement to normalize breastfeeding through declaring that the female breasts are not sexual objects but objects for nourishing a child.

Either way, the video is quite an exhibition. WATCH!

How to Have a Winter Break Movie Night

Are you ready for those two weeks off for winter break? Many parents can tell cabin fever is upon us, given all the downtime.

That is why we’ve have mastered the art of the winter movie night, morphing into a pro at pulling together an evening that everyone can enjoy, despite cold temps, an out-of-whack daily routine, too much time with relatives, and general post-holiday blues. It’s really just a matter of survival.

Here’s what you need to do.

  • Tire everyone out. OK, OK… so what I’m about to say isn’t technically a part of your winter movie night, but it IS still key to making your evening successful.Anyone who’s going to participate has to get his or her energy out before hand so that they’re ready to max and relax once the sun’s down. Maybe that means sledding or snowman-building. Maybe that means going on a trek around the neighborhood or taking a short drive to someplace your kids can run around fora bit. If you have teenagers, make them do outdoor chores (hello, shoveling) or run errands for you. The key is to get some crisp air into everyone’s lungs to ensure they don’t go into movie night still bouncing off the walls with pent-up energy.
  • Set up a snowscape. While the rest of your family is engaged in outdoor activities, you can get your heart rate pumping by setting the scene for the evening’s main event. Search high and low for any and all white pillows, white sheets, white towels and white blankets. You’re going to want to cover your entire movie-watching area with these materials to create a “snowscape.” (Light blue will work as well.) Some families might also have white plastic table covers and white or silver balloons they can add into the mix. If you really want to get into it, check out dollar stores and deep-discount sites and stock up beforehand!
  • Add merry music. Prepare a mix of your favorite holiday tunes and play them in the background while everyone’s coming in from the outside and starting to wind down.
  • Decorate as a group. You know your crew best, but if you think they’d enjoy doing something to help set the scene, you could have the kids make paper snowflakes to spread or hang around. (You could also use white throwaway doilies.)Depending on how much you do or do not mind cleaning up afterward, you could give them cotton balls to spread on the floor as “snow.” Another option is to let them build a “snow fort” out of blankets and pillows — somewhere cozy where they can snuggle down to watch the movie.
  • Build your own (ice cream) snowman. Let everyone settle in for the evening with a frozen treat. My recommendation would be to have small bowls of various toppings that can be used to make a face, hat and scarf on an ice-cream snowman’s head. Or you could whip up ice cream shakes for everyone and voila! You’ve got yummy “melted snowmen.”
  • Relax and enjoy a movie. Once your group is ready, it’s showtime. Whether you pick a family movie or a seasonal favorite, you’ve earned the right to sink into your chair and let yourself be transported into someone else’s story for a few hours.

And afterward? Egg nog for the adults and hot cocoa for the kiddies!

Kenya Moore Daly Shares First Photos of Daughter, Brooklyn

Bravo TV Real Housewives of Atlanta alum Kenya Moore shares the first photos of her daughter Brooklyn Doris in a new PEOPLE magazine exclusive.

In the feature, the former Miss USA describes her daughter as “perfect.”

“I finally have everything I’ve dreamed of,” Moore reveals. “She’s so perfect in so many ways,” the celebrity mom says of her newborn daughter, adding that her baby “makes 101 faces” that always make her laugh.

“This little angel … so beautiful. I feel so blessed. It’s all been so worth it.”

Moore and her restaurateur husband Marc Daly welcomed their little one on November 4, 2018.

Moore went through a lot to arrive where she is today with a hubby and child. It was the focus of much of her storylines on the RHOA.

Even though she is stepmom to Daly’s two children from a previous relationship, Moore said she wanted to carry a child of her own and resorted to IVF to get pregnant finally.

The stress didn’t end there. Not only was she plagued by trolls on the Internet who accused her of faking her pregnancy, she eventually developed preeclampsia and high blood pressure as a result. She ultimately had to deliver her infant via C section and was unable to walk, she revealed in the article.

Yikes! She even went into detail about having a severe episiotomy, sharing that the surgeons had to cut into her vertically and horizontally to deliver the baby.

“There were all these complications and they knew if they cut into a fibroid, I could potentially bleed out and die,” Moore revealed. “They ended up cutting me vertically too, to just get the baby out and make sure I survived the surgery. They were so scared they were going to lose me.”

Wow! But everything worked out perfectly for her in the end!

“I finally have everything I’ve dreamed of,” she gushes to PEOPLE, posing with her adorable baby girl for the first time in an exclusive spread for this week’s issue.

Wonderful! We’re so happy for Mrs. Daly! Congrats!

Christmas is a magical time of year for both kids and adults alike.  The kids are out of school, the holiday cheer keeps everyone in high spirits, and spending time together as a family is at the top of everyone’s priority list.  One hallmark of the Christmas season is the wide variety of Christmas stories, both new and old, that you can tell your child.

Twas the Night Before Christmas  This story is actually a poem that was written in 1823 by Clement Clarke Moore.  The poem was the first of its kind to describe Santa and his sleigh, and contributed largely to how people picture Santa today.  Moore wrote this poem for his children, but it was later published in the newspaper and was so popular that it was reprinted year after year.
