The Zuckerbergs Fuel more Open Discussions on the Miscarriage Taboo

zuckerberg pricilla baby bellyitchblog.com

“Most people don’t discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you — as if you’re defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own.”

Facebook Co-Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote this about he and his wife Pricilla experiencing multiple miscarriages before finally announcing  a pregnancy that will likely go to term.

Miscarriage is such a big taboo and as we’ve written here  often in Bellyitch. Having people of influence like the Zuckerbergs and other celebrities share their journey makes it easier for others not in the limelight to realize they are not alone. It can be a starting point. Kudos for Mark Zuckerberg and Pricilla Chan for being so open.

Elizabeth Cohen, an award-winning senior medical correspondent for CNN’s health, wellness and medical unit, and author of “The Empowered Patient“, wrote about how the announcement and revelation impacted her and how she feels it will help others.

Mark Zuckerberg and Wife Expecting First Child

zuckerberg pricilla baby bellyitchblog.com

After years of struggling, several miscarriages and losses, Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg and his wife since 2012, Pricilla Chan are expecting their first child together.

The billionaire CEO and co-founder of the popular social network announced the news, naturally, on his Facebook page:

“Priscilla and I have some exciting news: we’re expecting a baby girl!” he said.

“We’ve been trying to have a child for a couple of years and have had three miscarriages along the way,” he said. “You feel so hopeful when you learn you’re going to have a child. You start imagining who they’ll become and dreaming of hopes for their future. You start making plans, and then they’re gone. It’s a lonely experience. Most people don’t discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you—as if you’re defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own.”

He added that he hopes his news will encourage others who have faced loss.

“Our good news is that our pregnancy is now far enough along that the risk of loss is very low and we are very hopeful,” he said. “Cilla and our child are both healthy, I’m extremely excited to meet her and our dog Beast has no idea what’s coming.”

Donald Trump calls Lawyer ‘Disgusting’ after asking for Breastfeeding Break

trump2

US 2016 Presidential hopeful Donald Trump is catching some heat today for once calling a lawyer disgusting after she asked to excuse herself temporarily from a legal proceeding so she could pump breast milk for a baby at home.

A New York times report today discusses the recently  uncovered transcript from a 2011 Trump deposition over a failed Florida real estate project. When Elizabeth Beck, then a brand new mom who was also the attorney for the opposing side of the case, asked for a break to pump, she raised her breast bump bag to signal the genuineness and urgency of her request.

“You’re disgusting,” Trump told the woman before getting up himself to scurry from the room, the reports states.

Trump tweeted in response to the incident today claiming that Beck was attempting to nurse in front of him. He said he she lost and he loved beating her.

Also, without denying the allegations, Trump’s lawyer, Alan Garter, told the Times in a statement that Trump’s statement “was in no way a statement about her decision to breastfeed or pump. It was solely the fact that she was appearing to do it in the middle of a deposition,” and make an attempt to get extra time.

Um…this guy probably never in his life had super engorged breasts! News flash: It is uber painful and uncomfortable! The consequence of her not pumping would be for her milk to leak through her breastpads and clothing. How insensitive, aloof and unsympathetic can these guys be! Garter is one thing, but the Donald wants to be president! ugh!

As expected, Beck calls Trump’s camp response ridiculous saying she was only requesting a private place to pump, she told CNN this morning.

““[Trump] got up, his face got red, he shook his finger at me and he screamed, ‘You’re disgusting, you’re disgusting,’ and he ran out of there,” Beck said, referrign to this his behavior as “an absolute meltdown.”

Outside of this incident, the only other indication Trump has given on his feelings of mothers and children since announcing his candidacy came during a speech in Iowa earlier this year.

After the event,  he proudly boasted that a crying baby was driving him “crazy” but he kept his cool because he “didn’t want to insult the parents for not taking the kid out of the room!”

Yay! You get a gold Star!

ThrowBack: Eudoxie Agnan Bridges’ African Tribal Maternity Shoot

eudoxie photo shoot1

This is not necessarily new, but still I am crushing on the tribal print skirt, head band and bandeau top in a maternity shoot that Eudoxie Agnan Bridges wore in a maternity shoot she did while pregnant.

It juxtaposed nicely with the traditional Western shot the Gabonsese beauty  took with her American husband, Fast and Furious franchise actor and rapper  Christopher “Ludacris” Bridges  and in with a floor-length lace lounge jacket, also during her final trimester of her first pregnancy.

Also, still loving the tranquil lilac nursery she decorated for their newborn daughter Cadence Gaëlle, that the philanthropist and Med-School student shared on her Instagram.

Atlanta-based photographer Donna Permell of Prime Phocus Photography did a superb job on the shoot!

Volunteer to Get FREE Stretch-Mark Prevention Cream

pregnant-belly-cream

A female founder has developed a stretch mark preventive butter which she says turns into silky absorbing, non-staining oil which is unlike anything being sold today.  Sounds good?

Greta Moretti  has asked Bellyitch to refer to her pregnant volunteers to test market one of 10 nutrient-rich creams she says is 99% natural.  All 10 contains restorative omega 3 antioxidants, are high in omega 6 (linoleic acid) and omega 9 (oleic acid), have tons of vitamins including A, C, & E, and over 20 essential amino acids and natural peptides, Moretti says.

The main target market, Moretti tells us, is women whose sense of smell is off during pregnancy. That’s why she is doing this test is to help her narrow down the ten fragrances and colors of the product down to four. In addition, she would like general feedback before the upcoming product launch.

” I want them to feel smart about what they’re putting on their skin, and not be swayed by fancy marketing techniques for worthless products containing useless ingredients,” Moretti says.

The test market will be limited to about 20 women, but in all stages of pregnancy.

If you are interested in volunteering and receiving the products free of charge, including free shipping, give Moretti a call at 845-735-3300 and leave a message. She will call back to follow up with you.

Do let us know if you volunteer and make the final cut! Tell her Bellyitch sent you!

The Hipster who wanted to Suck in Her Baby Belly while Pregnant

A 30-something new mom wrote in new Harper’s Bazaar piece that she resented her growing baby bump while pregnant so much she wanted to suck it in.

That’s right! Her baby!

The author, Annie Davies, explained being ashamed over this admission.

Davies writes in the piece:

And I felt guilty for admitting I wanted to; terrified that my ambivalence would translate into how I would feel for my soon-to-be-born child. Shouldn’t the bump have been the easy part? After all, we live in a culture that venerates pregnancy-as-accessory.

There are Pinterest pages and Tumblrs devoted to best celebrity maternity style. More and more designers are creating maternity capsule collections. Pregnancy looks good. Stylish. Sexy. I knew it. I saw it. But despite hours of perusing pregnancy style and hundreds of dollars spent on various maternity outfits, I simply couldn’t feel it.

It turns out , she had sculpted the image of a free spirit and dressed herself, got piercings and tattoos to match how she wanted others to see her as. It reads like she was a wannabe hipster, apparently.

Davies continues:

Part of it was because I simply didn’t identify as a mom. When I found out I While I absolutely wanted this child, I wasn’t sure how the persona I’d spent my entire adult life cultivating would would mesh with middle-of-the-night feedings and spit-up covered clothing.

In “Bringing Up Bebe”, a book on how the French do parenting right that became my bible throughout my first trimester, one of author Pamela Druckerman‘s key theses is that French women don’t make motherhood their whole identity. Druckerman explains that in Parisian parks, that unless a child is clinging to her and calling her maman, it’s pretty much impossible to tell whether a woman is a mother. I aspired to that European model, absent of cutesy phrases like mom jeans and mom blogs and mom’s nights out.

Davies wrote how she wanted to emulate friends she had who never talked about their children and deliberately kept their family and work life different.

Not only did she want to shield signs of her pregnancy, Davies says she was even awkward dealing with all the extra attention and other unspoken rules and office politics that come with pregnancy.

She further explained:

While the physical transformation was disconcerting, being so obviously identified as a soon to be mother felt bizarre; full of rules I didn’t understand. Appearing in public meant I constantly had to steel myself for the looks like a boy! (it wasn’t) shouts from strangers on the street and affirm to the barista that no, I didn’t want decaf coffee. At around 34 weeks pregnant, I was asked if I would be willing to potentially appear on a television segment talking about a magazine article I wrote. Of course, I wrote to the PR person, just FYI I’m going to be eight months pregnant …

I stopped after I typed those words, then deleted them. Would an expecting father ever have said something similar? Of course not. Regardless of whether or not I looked pregnant had nothing to do with whether or not I could competently discuss my work. And yet, I found myself almost instinctively apologizing, as if my pregnancy had somehow fundamentally changed me.”

In the end, Davies discovers after giving birth to her daughter Lucy this past April that a baby does become part of your life and it isn’t that easy to fragment it away, even if you tried.

Even after boasting in the article about being able to wear a bikini a few weeks after delivery, Davies says she has changed in her feelings and now would do it again differently.

Next time, she would actually decorate and flaunt her bump more.

Interesting…you thoughts on this one?

Inside Naya Rivera’s ‘Tee Pee’- inspired Nursery

Glee alum actress Naya Rivera showed off her neutral toned nursery inside an exclusive shoot for  MyDomaine.

The beautiful petite mom-to-be and her husband since July 2014 Ryan Dorsey are expecting their first child in a couple of months.

Rivera revealed in the feature that she built the entire nursery around a cute black and white Tee Pee she discovered at LandOfNod.

From there, the Devious Maids star added neutral elements, sentimental items, and other eclectic and unique pieces.

“I love so many things in the nursery, but my favorite would have to be the bird chandelier,” Rivera said about the copper wire piece hanging from the ceiling. “It’s so fun and adds a pop of color and youth!”

The black and white accessories like the Eivor throw from Ikea were added to accommodate the fact that babies see in black and white for the first few weeks of their lives.

She did add pops of color to mix up the black, white, cream and gray.

“My favorite item in the bookshelf is the photo of Ryan and I at our wedding, and the baby’s ultrasound picture,” Rivera shares. “You can see the baby’s face so clearly!”

Her designer Angelo Surmelis was going for a gender neutral design that was still kid-friendly.

Rivera posted a quick snippet of the behind the scenes video from the shoot on her Instagram account.

Everything works well though we think the patterned wall paper is a bit too much stimulation for a nursery where baby is supposed to be sleeping in and not playing. Perhaps she will tone it down later.

10 More Summertime Hacks to Know

cup summer

We got such great feedback and response from the initial Summertime Hacks we shared earlier, here are 10 more from our Supernanny Pals to help you navigate the summer heat, bugs and other minor nuances. These tips also provide some great shortcuts to know. Enjoy!

mosquito

1. Keep a dryer sheet in your pocket to keep bugs away. You can spend tons of money buying bug spray, and you’ll most likely end up feeling sticky, smelling like bug spray, and getting bitten by bugs anyway. An easy solution is to carry a dryer sheet with you, which is something most people have at home already anyway. By carrying it in your pocket you can ward off bugs; something about the smell keeps the bugs away from you.

baking soda2

2. Sprinkle baking soda in sweaty shoes. Running around in your shoes without socks is a regular occurrence during the summer time because everyone just wants to slip shoes on and go. Unfortunately, this also causes extra unwanted odor in your shoes. To fix this problem sprinkle the inside of the shoes with baking soda to absorb the odors. If you’d rather not have the powdery look in your shoes, you can create a sachet by using a rubber band wrapped around a few tablespoons of baking soda in a handkerchief. Just put a sachet in each shoe and the odors will disappear.

fruit-fly-trap-4

3. Trap fruit flies with apple cider vinegar. Did you bring home fruit flies from the farmers market? Fill a glass jar half full of cider vinegar and screw the lid back on. Punch several holes in the lid and leave the jar where you have seen the fruit flies. They will be gone in no time.

sunburn

4.Cool a sunburn with white vinegar. Unfortunately, with the warm summer months comes the occasional sunburn. To take the sting out of a sunburn soak clean soft cloths in white vinegar, wring them out and lay them on the sunburned skin.

vaseline

5. Coat feet with petroleum jelly and cover with socks at bedtime. This trick will keep your feet soft and sandal ready all summer. A little petroleum jelly on your elbows and knees will make sure they stay soft and smooth for all of those revealing summer outfits.

ketchup

6. Mix a can of cola with ketchup for a quick and easy barbecue sauce. Figure out about how much sauce you want and add the cola to the ketchup to thin it out and add flavor and sweetness. Brush on chicken or ribs during the last stages of cooking on the grill to avoid burning.

condtionaer

7. Use conditioner to shave your legs in a pinch. Did you forget to pack your shaving cream for your vacation? That’s okay; you can use the sample bottle of conditioner that most hotels give you. This will leave your legs smooth and silky soft.

coconut

8. Apply coconut oil to bee stings and bug bites. Coconut oilhas anti-inflammatory properties and will help heal the sting or bite as well as soothe the pain.

hullers
9. Straws make great strawberry hullers. Take a normal straw and push it up through the base of the strawberry and come up under the hull. Keep pushing and the hull will usually come right out. Practice makes perfect with this, but it really works well when you get the hang of it and you won’t have all those strawberry seeds under your finger nails.

cup summer

10. Use cute cupcake papers to cover your drinks this summer. When the weather turns nice eating and drinking outside becomes standard, and almost mandatory. The problem with eating and drinking outside is keeping the bugs away from your food and drinks. Get yourself some cupcake papers and use them to cover your drinks. If you’re having a party the cupcake papers can even match the theme. To make a drink cover you just need to punch a hole in the cupcake paper and stick a straw through. Just make sure there are no bugs inside the straw before you drink.

How to Keep your baby cool in the Summer w/out using AC

Staying cool during the summer isn’t just a desire for babies, it’s a necessity. Babies who become overheated can suffer terrible consequences, ranging from heat exhaustion to heatstroke. While babies can’t exactly tell you when they are hot, there are signs that can indicate your baby is overheating. Some signs that indicate overheating include your baby being extremely thirsty, tired, and having skin that is cool and moist.

Overheating is one of the leading causes of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) according to the National Sleep Foundation.  When babies are too warm they sleep deeper, which can lead to trouble. For this reason, it’s important not to overdress your baby for sleep. When she is sleeping in her crib and there is no air conditioning in her room, putting her in a onesie or a pair of light pajamas is best.  You’ll also want to have a fan running in her room to circulate the air, but make sure that the fan isn’t blowing directly on her. To cool the air that the fan is blowing you can put a pan of ice water in front of it.

A good rule of thumb is to dress your baby like you are comfortably dressed, plus one layer. If you are comfortable wearing shorts and a T-shirt then put her in that as well, plus a onesie underneath.  If you’re burning up and have a pair of shorts on, leaving your baby just in her diaper may be appropriate.  Try to avoid synthetic fabrics when dressing her as they tend to trap the heat and moisture in instead of allowing her skin to breathe.

If you are going to be going outside with your baby then dress her in lightweight cotton long pants, long sleeves, and a floppy hat.  Keep her in the shade and preferably somewhere she can feel a breeze.  It’s better to keep her skin covered than to use sunscreen on a very young infant.  If you must use sunscreen, apply it conservatively and only to the areas of skin that are exposed. You’ll also want to avoid being outside between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m because the sun’s rays are the most damaging during these times.
