We’ve Got Fab Maternity Looks for Every Trimester to Check Out

image

Are you a fashionista who recently discovered you’re preggers and are looking for style tips for having a hip and stylish pregnancy? Well, if so, I highly recommend you get some inspiration from DIY Lifestyle expert and co-host of The Fab Life’s Leah Ashley.

I did a style guide of the looks she wore from First Trimester to Last and it has gotten great traction on my Pinterest boards.

Here is a rewind of that post in case you missed it.

First above, a chunky cable knit sweater over slouchy sweatpants with a leopard scarf draped in an infinity loop around the neck is a great casual weekend look.

Overalls were in style for everyone for a couple of seasons now. That is perfect because traditionally that’s what pregnant women wore because there wasn’t much maternity options. Here, Ashley mixed denim, light denim shirt with stone washed overalls and accented with red slingbacks. Perfect. The statement necklace polishes off the look and is unexpected because it is so ornate compared to super cas denim.

This ensemble can only work during the first trimester when a mom-to-be hasn’t popped quite much yet, but still wants to conceal a growing bump under a fairly loose top. Pairing this black silk turtleneck with drawstring shorts does the trick. The gladiator boots adds some chic flavor.

Gingham is also a big pattern this year. And also great for hiding a bump in the early months are peplum tops. This top over denim skinny jeans are the money. Add red ballet slippers for cute outfit to wear child shopping or out and about during the weekend.

For more dressy functions or work, a comfy black dress works and wedges are perfect for getting some height but are less unstable as heels. A leather motorcycle jacket is a great outerwear topper. Bucket bags are perfect for carrying all your stuff.

My eyes immediately went to her heels. Oooh la la. It looks effortlessly stylish and polka dot with anything is classic. With Ashley’s short crop hair, it gives me a modern Audrey Hepburn feel. Love it!

This isn’t a complete outfit but I like the idea of mixing patterns. Here, her gingham cropped pants worn with black and white pumps work so well together. Break the rules why don’t you?

There you go. Hope they inspired your maternity wardrobe for the next few months.

How to pull off Spring/Summer Trends for Preginistas

spring summer trends

Spring and warmer weather give fashion-conscious trendy women the opportunity to sport the latest  Spring and Summer Fashion Trends!

If you are type of the girl who loves to keep up with the latest seasonal trends, but are also pregnant, I got bad news. Most of the trends this season are difficult to interpret into maternity unless you’re in your first trimester. There are seasons when I cannot stand any of the trending items but this year I’m really loving the opportunity to experiment with geometrics and 70s-inspired clothing.  For my pregnant ladies, I usually recommend incorporating the trends through accessories, scarves, and jewelry.

I gave it a try and selected a few pieces I think maybe could be incorporated with each trend, as assembled by WeWomen.com.  My picks could give you some ideas of how you can pull them off. Enjoy! and Good Luck, preginistas!

Celeb Inspiration: How to Wear Summer Whites

This upcoming Memorial Day triggers the opening of pools and also traditionally, fashion-wise, it’s when more people feel comfortable wearing whites. Pregnant women may try to avoid white for that perception that it makes one look larger than they already are but when played up right, they can look fab rocking Summer Whites too.

Here are a few ways to do it:

Get a white a white shirt or a “baby doll” dress and pair with a pair of Keds or gladiator sandals and shades for a cool look.

Go free flowing and free with a white maxi dress. Belt it above the breastbone or throw on a denim cropped jacket for a fun casual look.

And of course, you can go big and bold with ACCESSORIES!

Editor’s Winter Weekend Picks

Just because the temperature has dipped and there may be snow on the ground doesn’t mean you need to be stuck indoors this weekend. If you plan to venture out to go shopping, run errands, catch a movie or simply schlep your children to activities, you can still do it in style, mamas and mamas-to-be.
Here are my picks for weekend outings:
You do not want to be all stifled and confined to a heavy coat. So, instead, layer, layer, layer. Start with a long sleeve jersey top (or maternity top), layer a second one over that or add a thick but not so chunky sweater.
Loop an infinity sweater around your neck like J. Crew‘s Cashmere infinty scarf in a neutral tone. ($208)
Then, skip the wool coat and instead top it with a vest like Tart Maternity “Aislin” vest ($119).
To stay chic and current, carry a tote for all your stuff in black but with a whimsical or fun image emblazoned on it. I love Juicy Couture‘s Lion Scream Tote ($128).
Keep your heat inside your body and on your head by topping your dome with a fashionable wool hat like the Leith Knit Slouch beanie ($28).
Accessorize your look with edgy bangles. Ashley Pittman‘s new set of 5 Shaba Bangles in Dark horn ($545) are rocking my world right now. Loves!
There you have it. Have a fab weekend, mamas!

Trend Alert: Fall Black and White is back!

The Black and White trend is back for Fall 2014 and we noticed quite a few of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums have recently rocked the trend on the red carpet to events.
We are loving the script art crop top and matching pants that Mel B wore at the America’s Got Talent’ Post-Show Red Carpet held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Jennifer Lopez too was spotted in the black and white during the New Orleans stop at the American Idol  auditions tour. She wore a  $3,490 Valentino Bow Embellished Wool Blend dress.

Bellyitch blogger Posh (middle) and many of her friends who joined her to celebrate her birthday earlier this year wore Black and White and it wasn’t even planned that way.

Pregnant ladies too can rock the trend in black and white maternity dresses this season or mixing it up like the celebs in the featured header post above.

Double Trend Alert: Geometric patterns and Black and White -Pregginista style

Geometric shapes are making a return this Spring. So are the colors black and white.
Traditionally, pregnant women are told to stay far away from prints if pregnant so as not to accentuate all the extra spread that happens when baking a bambino!
But you can totes pull it off with careful stying. Simply wear one  of the following dressed under neath a long dark cardigan to to frame the look and voila! Style and Trendy without looking like a disco ball!

Your solitary MUST HAVE postpartum wardrobe item

Right after you have a baby, you may be anxious about getting back to the gym and working on getting rid of the pregnancy weight gain. I know I couldn’t wait until after my six week postpartum visit to hit the gym. When you are breastfeeding, you can’t pop diet pills or take any diet aid supplements to help your weight loss effort. There is a risk they may negatively impact your baby’s development and nourishment as well. So true because while I was taking pain killers from the c-section, my first child was extremely lethargic because he was drugged up too. I had to make a conscious effort to ween myself off of the meds despite the fact I was still in a lot of pain.
Anyway, I digress.
The only way to do it is slow and steadily, monitor your eating, exercise sensibly and stay active. Breastfeeding is said to help you burn 500 calories a day from the act itself so there is an added benefit to nursing.
But in the meantime, you have to stay stylish and comfortable. My advice is get yourself some uber cute sweats in figure forgiving styles and scrumptious yummy colors.

The sweats will be comfy under your still swollen belly and recovering scars and tender areas. Jeans and other pants can be confining.

And get them in a mix of colors, styles and materials for cooler and warmer temps, indoors and outdoor wear. It’s all about comfort post-partum.

You can mix up colors for casual out and about. And if you want to go fancy sweats, try doing same color matching sets too. This is the equivalent of dressing up for your post-partum, “I plan to wear track suits for two months” self. People are forgiving when they heard you just squeezed a watermelon out of something the size of a lemon. Trust us. (wink)
