Here Are the Top 20 Winter Vacation Destinations



It’s time to start thinking about winter and cold weather destinations.

Ski lovers, beach lovers and more have their pick of locales in the states to select from.

Personal-finance website WalletHub looked at 2016’s Best Winter Holiday Destinations to help winter travelers plan their getaways.

Its analysts compared 69 of the largest metro areas to find the best cold and warm winter holiday destinations, by analyzing each destination across 26 key metrics, ranging from “cost of the cheapest flight” to “number of attractions in each winter vacation spot.”

Here is how the results broke down:

Best vs. Worst

The average flight to a popular cold winter destination costs $326, lasts a little more than four hours and has 0.38 connections, whereas the average flight to a popular warm winter destination costs $455, lasts a little less than six hours and has 0.64 connections.

Among cold destinations, Albuquerque, N.M., has the lowest price for the cheapest three-star hotel room, $41, which is 2.9 times lower than in New York, the city with the highest, $119.

Among warm destinations, Killeen, Texas, has the lowest price for the cheapest three-star hotel room, $42, which is 5.3 times lower than in Honolulu, the city with the highest, $223.

 

Among cold destinations, New York has the most restaurants per capita, 10.76, which is 10.3 times more than in Bridgeport, Conn., the city with the fewest, 1.04.

Among warm destinations, Orlando, Fla., has the most restaurants per capita, 6.12, which is 23.6 times more than in Deltona, Fla., the city with the fewest, 0.26.

Back to School: These States have Most & Least School Bullying



With back-to-school season upon us and more than 160,000 children missing school every day in the U.S. out of fear of being bullied, the personal-finance website WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2016’s States with the Biggest Bullying Problems.

To identify the states where bullying is most pervasive, WalletHub’s analysts compared 45 states and the District of Columbia across 17 key metrics, ranging from “bullying-incident rate” to “truancy costs for schools” to “percentage of high school students bullied online.”

Here are the top and bottom states for pervasiveness of bullying.

Best vs. Worst

The District of Columbia has the lowest percentage of high school students who were bullied on school property, 12.08 percent, which is 2.2 times lower than in Nebraska, where the percentage is highest, 26.28 percent.

The District of Columbia has the lowest percentage of high school students who were bullied online, 7.86 percent, which is 2.7 times lower than in Idaho, where the percentage is highest, 21.08 percent.

Maine has the lowest percentage of high school students involved in a physical fight on school property, 4.85 percent, which is 2.8 times lower than in the District of Columbia, where the percentage is highest, 13.81 percent.

Kansas has the lowest percentage of high school students who missed school because they felt unsafe at school, 3.80 percent, which is 3.4 times lower than in Louisiana, where the percentage is highest, 13.10 percent.

Vermont has the lowest percentage of high school students who attempted suicide, 5.88 percent, which is 2.2 times lower than in Louisiana, where the percentage is highest, 13.10 percent.

Of Course Half of the ‘Least Stressful Cities to Live in’ are on the West Coast



Don’t worry. Be happy. With all that is going on in the nation and the world, I sometimes want to escape it all.

Some places are just stressful to live in altogether and Wallet Hub, the personal finance website, crunched some numbers in order to identify where Americans cope with stress better than others. WalletHub’s analysts compared the 150 largest cities across 27 key metrics.  Their data set ranges from average work hours to debt load to divorce and suicide rates.

  • Greensboro, N.C., has the lowest commuter stress index, 1.11, which is nearly 1.5 times lower than in Los Angeles, the city with the highest, 1.62.
  • Lincoln, Neb., has the lowest unemployment rate, 2.5 percent, which is about five times lower than in Detroit, the city with the highest, 12.4 percent.
  • Overland Park, Kan., has the lowest poverty rate, 6.0 percent, which is nearly seven times lower than in Detroit, the city with the highest, 39.8 percent.
  • Fremont, Calif., has the lowest divorce rate, 12.24 percent, which is about three times lower than in Cleveland, the city with the highest, 41.29 percent.
  • Seattle has the lowest percentage of single parents, 9.54 percent, which is about four times lower than in Newark, N.J., the city with the highest, 37.79 percent.
  • Minneapolis has the lowest percentage of adults in fair or poor health, 10.77 percent, which is about two times lower than in Mobile, Ala., the city with the highest, 25.71 percent.
  • Irvine, Calif., has the lowest number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents, 0.49, which is more than 40 times lower than in Detroit, the city with the highest, 19.89.
  • Fresno, Calif., has the most psychologists per 100,000 residents, 80.1, which is about 22 times more than in Baton Rouge, La., the city with the fewest, 3.7.

Independence Day: This Study Identified the Top 20 ‘Most Patriotic’ States

With the Fourth of July just days away, the personal-finance website WalletHub released its list of 2016’s Most Patriotic States as a follow-up to its recent look at the Best & Worst Fourth of July Destinations.

To identify the country’s patriotic hotspots, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 12 key metrics such as military engagement, voting habits and civic education.

Comparing The Best & Worst

  • Virginia has the highest median income for families – dad present – with kids younger than 18, at $100,738 – which is two times higher than the state with the lowest, Hawaii, at $51,160.
  • Nevada has the highest unemployment rate for dads with kids younger than 18, 7.95%, which is seven times higher than in North Dakota, the state with the lowest rate: 1.20%.
  • New Mexico has the highest percentage of kids younger than 18 with dad present living in poverty, 21.28%, which is four times higher than in New Hampshire, the state with the lowest, 5.36%.
  • Texas has the highest male uninsured rate, 22.9%, which is five times higher than in Massachusetts, the state with the lowest, 4.9%.
  • Alabama has the highest heart disease mortality rate among males, 267.8, which is two times higher than in Minnesota, the state with the lowest, 147.
  • Florida has the highest child care costs adjusted for median family income, 13.32%, which is two times higher than in Mississippi, the state with the lowest, 5.82%.

Woo hoo! There’s a Bunch of New Summer Job Opps, And Here are Top US Summer Job Cities

Do you have a young person in your home or community who needs a Summer Job? You’re in luck!

Last month, the Obama administration announced $21 million in grants to 11 communities in its Summer Jobs and Beyond campaign with the purpose to connect disadvantaged young people with jobs this summer and year-round. It stems from the White House’s  Summer Opportunity Project “to increase the number of young Americans participating in evidence-based summer opportunity programs, decrease the percentage of youth experiencing violence over the summer, and—more broadly—make sure that young Americans have the support they need to get their first job,” as a press release about the initiative states.

In addition, there is a new inter-agency project called Summer Impact Hubs which pairs local and state projects and leaders in one of 16 communities with a Federal “Summer Ambassador” who will spend the spring and summer partnering with them to meet their locally-driven goals by leveraging Federal resources, breaking down agency siloes, and building new local, regional, and national partnerships.

The average flight to a popular summer destination costs $304, lasts four hours and 28 minutes, and has 0.5 connections.

The Las Vegas metro area is the most attractive destination on the West Coast and the New York metro area on the East Coast.

California, South Carolina, Texas and Oklahoma are home to the top summer destinations in the U.S., each with at least two metro areas in the top 15. Oppositely, Connecticut and New York are each home to the largest numbers of the most unpopular summer destinations.

The Charleston, S.C., metro area has the lowest cost of a three-star hotel, $31, which is nearly six times less expensive than in Cleveland, the metro area with the highest, $184.

The Salt Lake City metro area has the most diversity of attractions, which is two times more than in Akron, Ohio, the metro area with the lowest.

This year, Americans spent $10.4 billion on Black Friday 2015 with $4.45 billion coming from record online sales.

You best believe, a third of consumers went over their budgets, according to personal finance WalletHub which conducted an in-depth analysis to determine 2015’s Holiday Budgets by City.
