In One Year, 3 Women Accidentally Birthed their Babies inside a Toilet

birth in toilet

Dad Flinn Dorion, Charlotte Bryant and Kirsty Parker all welcomed babies delivered accidentally in the toilet

This past February, another woman went to the bathroom and accidentally gave birth to a baby inside a toilet.

On Valentine’s Day 2016, Joanne Fontaine of Winnipeg, Canada unexpectedly gave birth to her son Christopher 6 weeks prematurely when her water broke while she was using the bathroom.

Fonataine said she called her boyfriend Flinn Dorion who scooped the baby out of the toilet and cleaned him off before emergency personnel came and took over. The baby is being monitored at at the neonatal intensive care unit at Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre, according to CP24. “I told my boyfriend to call the ambulance. I can feel the baby’s head,” the new mom told CTV News.

This isn’t the first time a woman has given birth to a baby inside a toilet. Earlier this year, a Welsh woman’s back pains were misdagnosed by doctors who didn’t realize she was pregnant.

Mom Charlotte Bryant also welcomed her son, Joshua, unexpectedly while sitting on a toilet. He was 7 pounds, 4 ounces and was taken to  the intensive care unit at University Hospital of Wales. The baby boy has since been released from the hospital and is now three weeks old.  Bryant told the Daily Mail that she had no idea she was pregnant until she welcomed her son while sitting in the washroom.

And even more bizarre is the story of another British woman who gave to not one, but two babies on the toilet unknowingly.

In 2015, Kirsty Parker thought she was experiencing a stomach bug when she went to the bathroom one afternoon and suddenly gave birth to a 3lb 4 ounces baby girl, she later named Ruby. Parker said she had no signs of pregnancy except slight weight and a little moodiness. The baby was born 10 weeks premature. Parker was at her mom’s home at the time.

Only nine months prior, Parker was in the bathroom when she gave birth to a baby girl Amber on the bathroom floor. Parker knew she was pregnant then but was not expecting to deliver for another 8 weeks.

‘”Who needs to go to hospital to give birth? I’m still in shock really. I think it’s more that I just did not know I was pregnant,” Parker said.  ‘As all my previous births have been in a bathroom – that is obviously just where I like to have my children.  I had my first child Crystal who was born eight weeks early on the bathroom floor. That was a shock but I knew I was pregnant with her – and with Amber – but on neither occasion did I know I was in labour.’

At the time, Parker and her husband Lee had 5 other children: Parker’s 7-year old daughter Crystal Stevenson; Lee’s sons 5-year old Harry and 4-year old Ronnie, and the couple’s 9 month old baby. seven, Lee’s two sons Harry, five, and Ronnie, four, and the couple’s t9-month old daughter, Amber.

Parker said she did not have any morning sickness – and thought she had just struggled shifting the baby weight from Amber’s birth nine months previously.

“If I knew I was pregnant there are things I would have done differently,” she told the Daily mail. “I would not have had any coffee or egg mayonnaise. I am very good when I am pregnant and fortunately I am not a very big drinker anyway. I did feel guilty about some of these things but both Lee and my mum said I shouldn’t as I had no idea I was pregnant.”

Amazing!

DIY: An Elegant Yellow & Grey Elephant-Themed Baby Shower

This weekend, I threw a DIY baby shower for my baby sister who is expecting her second child, a baby girl. With a limited budget, I was able put together a pretty fab shower, I think, by being resourceful, and cutting corners but without sacrificing quality and style. It all looked elegant in the end and as if I spent a lot more.

(A couple of my sister’s friends, one who is a p/t event-planner and baker and another who bakes cakes helped me out a bit. My sister’s future mom-in-law did the games and her aunt-in-law helped out as well and provided the venue, her lovely country home)

My sister, like me, is adverse to pink and purple and traditional girly colors. She wanted a shower theme to match the nursery she was decorating for her soon-to-be-born daughter, (and my future Godchild) Aubrey.

Elephants, Chevron Yellow and Grey is the theme. I strayed a little on the Chevron and we had a mix of yellows but it all came together, visually, well, nonetheless, in the end.

Here is how I pulled it off.

Invitations.

etsy invitations

In lieu of expensive invitations, I got downloadable printables from Fancy Shmancy Notes shop on Etsy for $15 and $5.00 for Cards asking for a children’s story book instead of a greeting card with any gift purchase.  I purchased a pack of 60 Avery brand customizable Note Cards from Staples office supply store. They come with envelopes and cost just $24. Postage stamps were $30.00. The total cost was $74 for invitations.  That move saved me about $100 in lieu of online-ordered customized invitations.

Discount, Dollar, Thrift and Bulk Stores Savings

I also saved money by hitting up thrift stores, dollar stores and bulk food stores. The party supply store sold paper and plastic table cloths for $9 each. Instead if those, I schlepped to my local thrift store and picked up 3 linen table cloths for $10 total! I washed and ironed three table cloths I already owned, including a very pretty one with grey and yellow in it that matched the color scheme. Score!

At Costco, a wholesale membership food warehouse, I got a huge bouquet of Daisies for only $10.00. I was able to convert that one bunch into 5 vases of flowers of different sizes and shapes that I set up on various tables at the venue. I also got food that would ordinarily cost more at a regular grocery store much cheaper there.

For example, a large 1 lb container of mixed greens was $4. A big 34 ounce bag of authentic nacho chips was $4. Two quiche pies were $13. An Alouitte Brie Wheel just $6. A large container of fresh cut fruit was just $10.  A similar size retails for about $30 at my local grocers. I know because I looked it up and did comparison shopping.

At the Dollar Store, nice Misaka brand vases were just $1.00 each.  Paper cuttlery, plates, napkins, cups in the theme colors cost $1.00 each compared to $3.00 to 8.00 at the party supply store. Favor boxes were just 10 for $1 compared to $30 for 50 at the party supply store.  I got some craft items for the favors and cupcake toppers there for $1.00 each as well.

Here is the final haul I set up on my dining room table.

However, to save money, I used some items I already owned. I had a case of sternos left over from a previous event. I used a serving tray and a lead glass chip and dip tray, another serving tray and glass tea light holders I already owned.

the cake

We saved money on the venue by hosting it at my sister’s fiancee’s aunt’s house in a rural part of a suburb in Maryland. The host, Aunt Nicho, has a bright and sunny Morning room that also has yellow-colored walls and a large airy and bright glass wall that brought in tons of natural light.

The cost of the main cake was offset because another family member donated the cost of the materials and my sister’s dear friend baked it. She has a p/t professional cake baking business and offered the labor for free as a gift to the mom-to-be.

FREE Printables

Google printables and you’ll find a ton of free and paid ones as well. I was fortunate to find a free one online with the same color scheme as ours.  There were water bottle labels, a candy station sign, and other printable items. When I printed out the printables, they came out darker yellow than on the computer screen, but it worked out because the color complemented well with the table cloth and coincidentally was the same shade of yellow on the the cake! Perfect!

I got the gumballs, sixlets and lollipop sticks in the color theme at the party supply store  to set up a candy station. (We used the candy display jugs owned by friend who has the P/T event planning biz too) I also picked up steamer strays and yellow serving trays for a reasonable price there too.

I later discovered that Walmart and Target are now in the business of offering specialized modern party supplies. All of the supplies for a candy station, which I set up and is very popular, cost between 25-50% less at these big box stores compared to the party supply store.

Aunt Nicho had these great decorative juice jugs that we used to hold mimosas and non-alcoholic OJ

A friend of my sis, Lynee, who is an amazing baker and the one with the p/t event planning company, gifted homemade strawberry and lemon butter cream frosting cupcakes. They were amazingly good! Yum!

I got these cupcake toppers for free online HERE. I used the $1 box of toothpicks I got from the Dollar Tree to tape them to the pack of the toppers.

Here is a serving tray I already owned, a wedding gift from decades ago, that I used to serve the brie and crackers.

Again, I saved costs with glass tea holders I had from a previous event and a chip and dip tray I owned since my wedding. The tea lights were just $1 for a dozen at the dollar store.

Aunt Nicho created a very neat tiered diaper cake we used for decoration as well.

We used grey and yellow party favor boxes I got from Dollar Tree at $1 for 10. We filled them with candy from a big bag of Lifesavers I picked up at Target that was $8.00 on sale!

The roll of tulle and pre-cut Tulle circles are just $1.00 as well at Dollar Tree.

I printed out maternity portraits from my sister’s shoot using my inkjet printer I reviewed here. It looked like professional quality. I used matte photo paper I got from Target.  The Target brand Up & Up is just $5.49 for 30 count.

Lynee brought this picket fence she found a while ago at a discount store that she filled with faux craft grass and stuck the candy lollipops I got from the party store in them for a nice effect.

IMG_1963

Candy from the party store and the leftover Lifesavers made a nice candy station.

waffle station

The shower was a brunch so we set up a Belgian waffle station complete with toppings, and whipped cream. The serving dishes were compliments of Aunt Nicho. I got the pitcher where I whipped up batter from Walmart for $3. My other sister got the great waffle iron that she loaned us for the event. It was on sale for just $24.99.00 at Kohl’s though it is now back to $29.99.

The Spinach quiche set on a really nice server/carver board Aunt Nicho owns.

IMG_1962

I made my baked salmon with sauteed onions and green peppers. My mom made her signature West African Jollof rice. My sister Adama made hot wings. I whipped up eggs and sausages and Aunt Nicho made home-cooked hash browns and biscuits.

IMG_1967

I set up the mixed greens and fruit on a utility station near the kitchen.

Here are Some Creative Easter Hunt Ideas

image

Ready for Easter? Check out these innovative and different Easter Egg Hunt ideas from PaperTrail:

  • Checklist Easter Egg Hunt – For large Easter Egg Hunts, you could make checklists for each child. Give each child a basket with a checklist and pencil in it, and instruct the kids to find ONLY what is on their checklist and no more (otherwise someone else would not get enough). Make the checklists the same for each child and make sure you have enough eggs hidden so that everyone can complete theirs. You can have a grand prize too, for whichever child completes his checklist first! The checklists could read something like this.
  • ___Find 2 blue eggs
  • ___Find 3 pink eggs
  • ___Find 1 yellow egg
  • ___Find 2 orange eggs
  • ___Find 4 purple eggs
  • ___Find 3 green eggs
  • Obstacle Hunt This is a good choice if you are having the Easter egg hunt outdoors in a big backyard or at a park. Just like in an obstacle course race, you could have various activities interspersed with egg collecting. For example, at the starting buzzer the kids race to the next spot where they have to thread a needle and only when they complete it can they run ahead to the next spot (collecting all the eggs along the way of course). Some other Easter party activities could be jumping over a cardboard box , going around a chair five times, blowing up a balloon, drinking a glass of water, eating a boiled egg and so on. The first child to reach the finish line wins a prize.
  • Printable Egg Hunt, Don’t have any plastic easter eggs?, Or looking for a different and easy way to have an, Easter egg hunt? Print out an egg game online game, cut out the eggs and hide them around your house., The kids will even have a great time helping to cut out the eggs.
  • Puzzle Treasure Easter Egg Hunt For this hunt you would need a puzzle (not more than 25 pieces , with each individual piece small enough to fit inside an egg). Here are the steps: First put the puzzle together. Then flip it over and write a clue across the back pointing to the treasure. Take the puzzle apart and put one or two pieces in each egg. Then hide the eggs for the hunt. The children will have to find all of the eggs and put the puzzle together in order to figure out where the “treasure” is. For more details on this and other Easter Egg hunt ideas visit creativekidsathome.com.
  • Pirate Hunt –Create a map that represents the floor plan of the house (if it’s indoors). You can even modify it to look like an island. Then mark the positions of eggs on the map. Stairs can be represented by a cliff, etc. Inside of the eggs, write clues that when put together will lead the kids to a “pirate treasure”.
  • Hunt in the Dark – You could also combine the Pirate Hunt above with a hunt in the dark for added effect, which the older kids are bound to enjoy. Give the kids each a flashlight and have them hunt for eggs in the dark. To make it even more fun, you can paint the eggs with glow-in-the-dark paint and search for them with no light at all.
  • Easter Egg Hunt with a message – Have a regular egg hunt, but in 12 plastic eggs put a number and a scripture telling a part of the Easter Story. Then when the kids find the eggs and are sitting all together, call out the numbers one by one and have each person read their scripture. You can have the kids tell the story of Easter.

New Law: Prove You’re Not Pregnant & You can get a Fast Divorce in Japan

The Justice Ministry in Japan is considering allowing women to remarry immediately after their divorce is finalized, if they can medically prove they were not pregnant at the time they separated, ministry sources said Friday.

Japan’s Civil Code has a century-old rule that prohibits women from remarrying for six months to avoid confusion over the paternity of children conceived shortly before or after a divorce. But the ministry is seeking to ease the restrictions following a top court ruling in December that concluded that the six-month ban is unconstitutional.

Under the envisioned revision, the ministry is considering shortening the period of the ban to 100 days from the current 180 days. Women with a doctor’s certificate proving that they were not pregnant at the time of their divorce, however, will be exempt.

There’s an App Some Companies Use that Tracks When a Female Employee has Stopped Filling Her Birth Control Prescriptions

building

Some companies, including Walmart, are hiring third-party firms like Castlight Healthcare Inc. to help them reduce their health care costs. Concern is that some of this “help” includes tracking when a woman has stopped filling her birth-control prescriptions and made fertility-related searches on Castlight’s health app.

An article in the Wall Street Journal this week stated that the collected data about employees help employers calculate people’s risks of certain health conditions. It scared a bunch of folks, especially on the Internet, who thought the app was a set up for pregnancy discrimination.

You could imagine the part about the app sending alerts about one’s personal and private moves sounds invasive and scary!

But it turns out the alerts are sent to the employees who are then “nudged” to make healthier choices that could lower their (and their employer’s) health care costs in the long run.

Data collected from the app is matched with the woman’s age, and if applicable, the ages of her children to compute the likelihood of an impending pregnancy, Castlight’s chief research and development officer Jonathan Rende, Castlight said. She would then start receiving emails or in-app messages with tips for choosing an obstetrician or other prenatal care. If the algorithm guessed wrong, she could opt out of receiving similar messages.

The employers only receive data in the aggregate and stripped form any personal-identifiable information.

Still, people think about that Target incident a few years ago, where the big box store used big data marketing analysis to send women who didn’t even know if they were pregnant yet coupons for baby products. Infamously, a father got a teen daughter’s baby coupons and learned before the teen could tell her dad that she thought she could be pregnancy.

These data-mining platforms are risky because sensitive health data is at risk of breaches and hackers, worse than a boss knowing that you’re looking to get pregnant in the near future.

It still pretty scary stuff!

john and chrissyh

R&B crooner John Legend and his model and TV host wife Chrissy Teigen are not strangers to sharing affection for one another at events and definitely on social media. The couple are expecting their first child together after a few  bouts of infertility and other struggles to conceive and maintain a pregnancy, Teigen once shared.

The internet was abuzz again recently over a tender moment shared on Instagram of the “Ordinary People” singer and multi-award winning artist kissing Teigen’s growing bump.

Verdict: Revenge Couple that Planted Weed in PTA Prez’s Car must Pay her $4M

When I heard there was a reality TV show about an Atlanta PTA, I thought, really? There is that much drama in PTAs?

Apparently!

A now-divorced California couple will have to pay a $5.7 million dollar civil verdict to anothe parent whose car they planting with drugs inside the car of the

It was the end of a sinister revenge plot over a school drop off and pick up line!?!

Um…

In 2010, Jill Easter was waiting for her 6-year old son to arrive in the school pick up line following an after-school tennis practice at the Plaza Vista School in Irvine after school. Another parent Kelli Peters remarked to Easter that her son was “too slow” to come outside.

Easter regarded the retort as an insult to her son’s intelligence & vowed revenge

First, Jill and her husband Kent Easter, both lawyers, attempted to get Peters removed as the PTA president. When that endeavor ended with the school finding no just cause to remove Peters, the Easters came up with a more sinister plot.

Kent planted drugs into Peters’ car and called the police from a hotel room stating he was a concerned parent who suspected Peters was on drugs.

When police went to Peters and searched her vehicle, they discovered marijuana in the car and arrested Peters in front of her daughter even.

Though Peters was never charged, she still said the ordeal was humiliating.

“I  was crying and begging for him to not put the drugs on the car, because people would see it,” Peters said during her trial. “Everybody was looking at me and I felt very humiliated.”

Eventually, Jill got a plea deal and testified against her husband, who she eventually divorced. He admitted the crime.

When asked in court if he planted the drugs on Peters, he replied: “Very stupidly, and unfortunately, yes.”

He has since filed for bankruptcy & says he is unable to pay.

It’s a high price to be petty.

“This was really not about money, this was about standing up to people that pick on other people and telling them it’s not OK to do this,” she said in court after the verdict. “I feel like justice has been served.”

Wow!
