Co-Existing: Breastfeeding, Motherhood and Glam Squads

celebrity glam squad breastfeeding

In Hollywood (and Bollywood) getting pregnant and having a family can disrupt a woman’s career but not so much anymore.
Motherhood isn’t halting opportunities and production can and do work around a star’s pregnancy. In recent years, many celebrity parents are showing their social media fans that they don’t let motherhood interfere with their work either. They can do both.
Gisele Bundchen‘s famous breastfeeding while getting glam shot was controversial because vanity and glamity aren’t supposed to co-exist with motherhood and breastfeeding, socially.

But they can co-exist and since Bundchen’s photo, other celebrity women like Lily Aldridge, Molly Sims, Kim Kardashian, Ali Larter, Terri Seymour and most recently, Kandi Burruss have shared photos of themselves tending to their babies while getting glammed up for an event.

Perfect and just in  time to update last year’s list of celebrity glam squads.  Last year, I hunted down the various glam squad photos celebs have posted on Instagram, WhoSay and Twitter. This small team that help get a celeb woman ready for an event, award show or other red carpet moment consist usually of a hairstylist, a manicurist, a stylist, a make-up artist and a personal assistant. They work in tandem and sometimes simultaneously and the glam squad photo shows them in action.

Of course, most of the glam squad photos are staged. Let’s be real. I wouldn’t want to be having my hair hot curled while my head is being maneuvered and shifted by the make up artist.  Ouch. I’ve had a curling iron dropped on me before and I have the scar still to prove it.

Also, showing off your glam squad is another way of telling your followers and fans that you are that special that you can’t get dressed on your own.  This is not shade. I’d hire myself a team in a hot second!  And you know this because even famous stylists who once were glam squad members are now celebrities in their own right. (think June Ambrose and Rachel Zoe)

These days, you can even rent one.  Companies like Miami-based GlamSquad (pictured above) will bring a team to you starting at $75. Not bad!

Last fall, Her Campus ranked some of the squad members of the biggest celebrities whose work we see on the faces and hair of influential women.

Here are some of the glam squads we’ve seen posted on social media recently.

Forget Everything! These are the only Two Things You Need in your Postpartum Wardrobe

juicy couture sweats

Right after you have a baby, you may be anxious about getting back to the gym and working on getting rid of the pregnancy weight gain. I know I couldn’t wait until after my six week postpartum visit to hit the gym. When you are breastfeeding, you can’t pop diet pills or take any diet aid supplements to help your weight loss effort. There is a risk they may negatively impact your baby’s development and nourishment as well.

The only way to do it is slow and steadily, monitor your eating, exercise sensibly and stay active. Breastfeeding is said to help you burn 500 calories a day from the act itself so there is an added benefit to nursing.

But in the meantime, if you are a fashionista (or even if you’re not but still want to look a bit put together), there are just two things you have to have in your casual wardrobe to get you through.  You can be stylish and comfortable.

My advice is:

  1. Get yourself some uber cute sweats in figure forgiving styles and  yummy colors and Juicy Couture makes the cutest and most comfortable sweats still. They are great for running errands and receiving visitors in and you can hide your still large tummy in them pretty well too.

2. Carry around a fly chic fashionable tote as your babybag! That’s it.

You can pair your fab bag and sweats with some cool shades for balance but that’s all you need for an effortless chic look. So long as your hair is brushed and you have on  light blush and a dust of face powder, you’ll look great!

In a promo leading up to this Sunday’s big game, Super Bowl 50,  between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers, the National Football League released this fun YouTube spot different sets of choirs.

Each group consists of babies through adults who were all conceived shortly after a Super Bowl.

Interspersed between shots of the various choirs set at their respective city are flashback images of parents jumping for joy at Super Bowl parties and hugging each other up, a prelude for conception-related celebration to come. It is set to Seal’s famous “Kiss From a Rose” song and it even has Seal in it! Brilliant!

Ashlee Simpson Ross & Evan Ross IG-shared First Photo of daughter Jagger Snow

Simply gorgeous!

Ashlee Simpson Ross and her husband Evan Ross shared a photo of their 6-month old daughter Jagger Snow on Instagram  on Sunday.

“Sunday love #JaggerSnow,” the “Pieces of Me” singer captioned the photo.

Ross, a singer who starred in The Hunger Games,  captioned his own Instagram  of the image, “Them there eyes! #jaggerSnow.”

The two welcomed the new addition last July 30. She is the first child for Ross, who is son to the legendary Diana Ross. Simpson has a 7-year old son Bronx with ex husband Pete Wentz, who, like Ross, is also bi-racial and has a mom of black Jamaican-descent and white dad.  (little known fact).

Since I’m getting all into their geneology, here’s more:

We also featured Ross’ sister Chudney Ross here on Bellyitch when the author, baker & bookstore owner was expecting her first child, daughter Callaway Lane,  with husband Joshua Falkner  in 2012.

Callaway and Jagger favor a bit, eh?

Rounding up the beautiful Ross cousins is Raif-Henouk Kendrick, whose mom is Evan’s eldest sister Rhonda (her dad is Motown founder Berry Gordy).

Rhonda shared with Madame Noire last year that she took over 10 years to conceive, went through IVF, conceived and miscarried twins before successfully welcoming Raif, a miracle baby with her husband since 1996, jazz musician Rodney Kendrick.

Packing Your Hospital Bag: Leave These 12 Things You’re Not Gonna Need At Home

Listen, you know all those baby prep books you’ve read that give you super long lists of stuff you need to pack to take with you for labor and delivery when it’s time to welcome your new baby? Okay, you’re not gonna need most of that stuff. Now, you may feel some comfort and security knowing that you have your 90s soft rock 3-disc CD to take your mind off of labor pains, but most likely, it won’t make it out of your suitcase.

Besides all the useless and uncessary things you’ll chorale to the hospital, you’ll have additional things, flowers, gifts, balloons and baby stuff to add to the pile and schlep back home. To save you the trouble and hassle, here is our old tried and true list of 12 things you can leave home and spare your poor partner the back pain.

  1. Newborn diapers– Hospitals provide all the diapers the baby needs during the stay and even send you home with extra starter packs
  2. Nursing cover -There is no need for modesty in your hospital room in your hospital bed. The nurses have seen plenty of boobs in their career. If guests visit while you’re nursing, you can ask them to wait outside until you’re done feeding the baby. Most people won’t get offended.
  3. Wipes– Most hospitals use a very thick napkin that they wet with water and wipes contain elements that aren’t good for a newborn’s skin.
  4. Diaper Cream -Most likely the baby won’t be born with a diaper rash and won’t develop one within the first2-3 days of his life while in the hospital. If he does, the hospital has sample cream to use. Those tubes and jars can add weight to an already stuffed take home bag
  5. Any childbirth class notes or guidelines and labor hints: Really now? Do you think in the midst of breathing through labor pains you’re gonna want to review your notes?
  6. Underwear– Many hospitals provide the most comfortable mesh disposable ones that you will love to use instead of messing up your own. The joke among my friends is that they are the special order Victoria Secret mesh panties for new moms.
  7. iPod or music player – with music selections to help with relaxation Besides being outdated and taking up too much space, piping Gregorian Chants or Enya in the room may be a distraction for the hospital staff, interrupt with monitoring equipment and/or disturb a neighboring laboring moms. If you have a smartphone that has the capability of accommodating music, download music on there and bring your headphones. It takes up less space than bringing your phone AND ipod.
  8. Receiving blankets- The hospital provides plenty that you can take home even afterwards. Save all the cute baby shower gifts for home.
  9. Two regular-sized bed pillows (in bright, distinctive, hard-to-lose pillowcases)- The Hospital or maternity center provide enough. If you are a germaphobe, think the hospital’s pillow cases may be too rough or want something familiar from home, just bring the pillowcases and replace the hospital’s cases. They take up less space.
  10. Baby’s “memory” book – for footprints or staff names and guest signatures Nice idea if you have someone who will remind guests to sign because you’ll be consumed with baby, nursing, caring for yourself, and will likely forget.
  11. Entertainment items (books, crayons, games) for children are to visit in hospital – A lot of hospitals don’t permit young children  in the maternity wards, but for those who do and if children come to visit they may not be staying THAT long to get bored and need entertainment. As for other people’s children, it’s not your job to tote extra crap to entertain your friends’ kids.
  12. Clothes for hospital baby photo AND clothes for baby to wear home  You only need one of these. Either or. The kid shouldn’t be a fashionista YET that she can’t be seen in the same outfit twice. You can simply put on the outfit before the photo and take it off afterward. If you can, schedule your photo the same day and around your discharge time.

The Extra Crap you don’t NEED but you CAN bring (eh hem, especially if you are a diva or fashionista):

  1. Make up– because you don’t want to end up on Facebook looking like you just went through a train wreck. If your goal is to look like Khloe Kardashian after she delivered Mason or at least attempt to, then you’re gonna want some make up.
  2. Towels- Because the hospital ones are usually washed a lot and can be itchy.
  3. Your own toilet paper – Hospital toilet paper can be thin. Your delicate bum may want something soft then
  4. Your Own Plush Robe – For accepting visitors, walks to the nursery to visit baby and /or walking off the gas for those who have c-sections.
  5. A spare bag – You can use it to store the extra stuff you’ll have to carry home.

The UK Greenlights Designer Baby Research but Not For What You Think

designer-babies-2

Today, regulators in Great Britain granted permission for researchers to begin genetically modifying human embryos.

When many people think of genome editing, one think of movies like Gattaca and people toying around with pre-determined characteristics in order to create babies with ideal traits, eye color, hair color, abilities and such. There are tons of ethical and moral concerns.

gattaca

But the Francis Crick Institute in London plans to study the embryos for 14 days in order to try to figure out why some embryos result in a miscarriage and others grow until term. The European nation’s Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) approved the plans proposed by stem cell scientist Kathy Niakan.

The group will use leftover embryos donated from IVF couples and study a single cell til it grows to about 250 cells.

Niakan will utilize a genome editing procedure called Crispr-Cas9 to turn genes on and off in early stage human embryos. She will then monitor how the modifications will impact placenta development. This editing procedure permit scientists to make precise DNA changes with the potential to correct faulty genes and treat genetic disorders.

Correcting disorders is one thing. Ethicists fear this technology will soon allow parents to select the traits they want their future kids to have.

After studying the cell growth, the embryos will be destroyed. A couple of years ago the US Food and Drug Administration held hearings to discuss proposals to do the same here but it ultimately was not approved.

There was a lot of outrage over harvesting and growing embryos that will never be implanted in a  woman but instead destroyed. Here you go inserting concerns about the destruction of embryos. And a look a this amazing footage of a very active fetus inside her mom’s womb.

peter gunz and amina buddafly with daughter cori

The Pankey family is about to get much much bigger according to reports that VH1‘s  Love and Hip Hop cast member Amina Buddafly is expecting her second child with husband & show co-star, Peter Gunz.

The German- Senegalese recording artist announced during a taping of the show’s reunion last Thursday, January 27 that she was expecting her second child with Gunz, (real name Peter Pankey), the Icecream Convos blog reports. The couple have a  17-month old  daughter named Cori.

This will be Peter Gunz’s 9th or 10th child, depending on when she gives birth, as Gunz is also expecting with his on-again-off-again love interest of 16 years on the show, Tara Wallace. Those two have a couple of sons together, 3-year old Kaz and 7-year old Jamison.

The boys met Cori on an episode of the show.

She has announced that she is awaiting the birth of her  baby with Gunz. It is unclear how far along Amina is in her pregnancy, but she re-posted this recent photo of a friend.  Amina (in the black and white gingham top) looks to be in her second trimester.

But Gunz is not interested in all those who are judging the fact he is dad to many children. He took to Instagram to send a message to his critics: “Again I’m not on child support not one kid on welfare never asked anyone for help with my kids yet the out cry is so harsh… Go figure..” he captioned a photo collage of himself with all of his children.  “Can’t help trusting and believing a man you love… Blame me not Tara and Amina.. But after you blame me f*ck off.”

He has 8 children according to this VH1.com article

Congrats to all the new babies.
