Here’s Your Thanksgiving Family Manners Dinner Guide to Not Losing It!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Tis the season for conspicuous consumption and overeating.

Also, welcome the season of family gatherings, togetherness and bonding. Sadly, this is also a time for tension, rudeness and gaffes, feeding grudges, creating new ones and dodging snarky barbs, criticism and other well-meaning but annoying questions and comments from family members.

My audience is pregnant women mainly so if you’re expecting, I know your emotions are on level 100 and tolerance for bull is at -100!

Here are some quick tips I thought of to set you and the kids straight in the manners department and for escaping the family gatherings still loving one another, well, mostly.

Moms-to-be – Bite your tongue, mama! Bite it! If it will help, carry a squeeze ball to torture when you run out of nerves to handle some of the intrusive questions and comments you will get:

  • Were you trying?
  • Did you want a boy/girl?
  • Why did you pick that name?
  • So you are sticking with that name (the passive aggressive version)
  • Another one?
  • This is it right? (the passive aggressive version)

Your Kids- Your children might have heard you talking about Aunt Sally’s no-good boyfriend with no job or Uncle Rob’s arrest or Cousin Barb getting fired for the 3rd time this year. Remind them to not bring any of this  up or butt in with an opinion on whatever personal stresses, trauma or gossip they may or may not have overheard you yapping about this year. Trust.

Manners – If you’re hosting, remind the kids of basic manners. You know they won’t remember.  Tell the kids to take coats and throw them gently in that pile on the bed when there is no more room in the coat closet.  Remind them to say please, and thank you and to share their toys with their cousins and other children coming over. And to play nice and try to stick to the basement. Ha! Just kidding, but yeah.

If you are going over someone’s house as a guest, remind them to not complain out loud about Great Aunt Wilhelmina’s funny smell, or twist up their noses at your cousin’s girlfriends attempt as string bean salad. It’s hard not to wear emotions on your sleeve when you’re staring at raisins in a macaroni dish, but blame the Food Network (in  your head) and don’t start any beefs over it.

Dinner Topics: Politics and Religion – Try to avoid both topics especially in these contentious times. If they come up , switch up the convo.  Even if everyone in the family are of the same political bent, these are still complex topics that can get heated and go from 0 to 100 Real Quick!

Clean Up – Know when to call it a night and rap up. If you’re a guest, don’t take all of the people’s leftovers in the carryout container you brought with you. Leave them a spoonful or two.

But do offer to do the dishes, or send in one of your older children to help. You’ll still get the credit! ha!  If you’re expecting, you’ll probably get a pass anyone on clean up duty because you shouldn’t be on your feet anyway!  Yeah, milk this pregnancy for all it’s worth! ha!

If you’re hosting and you had enough, feel free to hug and kiss the last stragglers good night, blame it on the baby and leave them right there and all the dishes for your spouse and kids to clean up. Hopefully, they’ll get the hint and exit after you leave. Ha! That’s not rude. Is it? ha!

I think that’s it! Chime in and drop us some more on line! Connect with us @Bellyitch on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest!

Gabrielle Union, Hubby and Oprah To Introduce Baby Kaavia In This Angolan Skirt (GET IT NOW)

Actress Gabrielle Union has introduced herself as a new mom majorly and in all the ways possible!

First, she made the surprise announcement that her daughter, her first child with husband Dwayne Wade, birthed via surrogate, arrived after she kept the process completely private and out of the media.

Then this week, she announced the name in an Instagram post: Kaavia James Union Wade.

” @kaaviajames pronounced Kah-Vee-Uh James. She has 102 nicknames including but not limited to Kaav, Kaavi, Kaavi Baby, Kaavi J, Jamie, KJ, Nugget, Nug, Pooters,” the Bring It actress shared. ” We wanted to include my family in her name so the ‘James”‘ is from my uncle James Francis Glass who is also my godfather. Union is her middle name. I’ve waited this long so fo sho I was gonna get in there ??‍♀️??☺

Nice!

Proud papa tattooed it on his body. Wow! That’s love!

Finally, the Being Mary Jane star shared that we will get to finally meet the little one and learn more about her journey during a televised special that will air this upcoming December 8th at 8 EST on OWN!

She gave a teaser yesterday and outfitted the newborn in a handmade Angolan African Skirt. I know the brand because The Wades graciously tagged the small Etsy shop owner, North Carolina-based Kimberly McBee of Ackee Tree Clothing.

Baby Kaavia is wearing the Angolan African Skirt which sells for $30 and with FREE Shipping if you order during the holidays! According to the ETSY listing,

“This cotton African print inspired skirt has professionally finished seams. You get skirt and head wrap. Perfect outfit for Black History Month or Kwanzaa…This skirt is lighter than our wax fabric skirts. The headwrap which can double as a sash, has rolled edges and is approximately 4” * 40” and comes untied.”

The Jamaican born dress maker, who also taught her self to sew, proudly spread the news in a Faceboook micro-biz entrepreneur group I belong to and we all went crazy with excitement.

If you would like to dress like little Kaavia who joins several other babies and children of celebrities who launched their very own well-followed Instagram pages within hours of birth, then purchase it here!

How to Dress Your Bump For Thanksgiving

If you are expecting this Thanksgiving and are toting around a sizeable bump, God knows you may  not looking forward to standing on your feet preparing a meal and hopefully, you have been invited to someone else’s home this year and/or your family is giving you a pass on cooking so you can just kick up  your feet and relax.

Check out this post on How to dress your bump and this other post on 5 things NOT to wear at Thanksgiving!

And finally, I think the quintessential outfit ought to be this look that lifestyle blogger Loren Hamilton of Wear and When pulled off when she was last expecting. Follow her pattern of styling and you won’t go wrong!

Start with a shirt in breathable fabric like jersey knit or cotton. Then layer a light cardigan or collared shirt over that and finally a denim, leather or cotton blazer.

For the bottom, go with a comfy pair of dressy leggings or denim maternity stretch jeans with a pair of red ballet flats. Carry a large clutch to hold your stuff and then work it! Stylish and comfy!

Have fun and good luck enduring the endless belly rubs and all the love!!!

Amy Schumer Checks In Hospital for Extreme Morning Sickness

Add comedienne Amy Schumer to the list of women who have had to be hospitalized for severe morning sickness.

The comedic actor was set to perform her standup routine in Dallas, Texas on Thursday but instead checked into the hospital. The comedian has experienced extreme nausea in her pregnancy and now has been diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum, an acute morning sickness.

“I am in the hospital. I’m fine,” the I Feel Pretty star captioned a photo of herself in a hospital bed. ” Baby’s fine but everyone who says the 2nd trimester is better is not telling the full story. I’ve been even more ill this trimester.”

Good to know. This is Schumer’s first child with her husband of about 10 months chef Chris Fischer.

Brain Boosters: Give Non-Toy Educational Gifts This Year {2018 Gift Guide}

During the Holiday season, parents often get carried away indulging their children’s wishes and desires for getting the latest video game

or hot toy. But if your budget allows it or if there are family members who will be also purchasing items for the kids, you may want to consider picking up

something for them that will enrich their education and schooling.  Here are 12 gift ideas to consider that could amplify or supplement every subject your child may be learning about in school:

Social Studies: A Globe – Having a globe in the home is an excellent way to teach your children that the world does not consist of the narrow confines of their town or block.  After they receive their new globe, at least once a week, have them spin the globe, cover their eyes and point to a random location. Then head off to Google more about that location, its climate, topography, culture and traditions. It’s a great way to instill a value and interest in travel and keep them focused on doing what they need to do to travel on their own to exotic locations some day.

Try this Amazon best seller, an illuminated 8″ World Globe for Kids with Standd  with build in LED for a Night View ($29) and Colorful, Easy-Read Labels of Continents, Countries, Capitals & Natural Wonders ($30)

Science: A Microscope – Getting a child an age-appropriate microscope is a great way for them to explore the basic molecular elements of various household items.  They can use it to check out everything from a carpet fiber, to a dead beetle to their own eyelash. One of the fastest, if not the fastest, growing job sector is science, technology, engineering and math.  Owning a microscope could enhance an interest in the science field, which will ultimately mean more job prospects for the future.

Amscopes’ 48-piece beginner biological microscope kit offers 120X, 240X, 300X, 480X, 600X and 1200X magnifications and is a better grade than the toy scopes but less costly than professional grade ones. It’s down from $61 to $30 on its website.

Physical Education: A Ball or Bike – One of the reason there is a childhood obesity epidemic in the United States and other regions of

the world is that in this digital age, children spend most of their spare time playing video games or watching TV indoors. Something like a bat and ball,

basketball or bike will give you as a parent and the kid an opportunity to get out and get moving. A gift that encourages physical activity could help combat or delay the onset of childhood obesity.

For a younger child Strider’s 12 sport balance bike is great for an 18 month to 5-year old. ($107) For kids up to 9 years old, try Royalbaby RB14B-6B BMX Freestyle Kids Bike ($93+)

Math:  A math App or annual subscription to an online math enrichment program – If you have an iPad, iPhone, Android phone or

desktop or Library access to a computer, you can find apps or other online programs that are tutorials and created to help children improve their math

skills. Many programs around now include fun games that help kids learn while enjoying their experience. If it’s not so much like school and similar to fun games they already play, you may get them hooked!

For younger kids, I like ABC Mouse for younger kids which right now is $59.95 for a year, a savings of close to half off for the Holiday season and when they got older, we purchased and use and love IXL math for up to 12th grade to keep our kids ahead of the class. It is $13.95 but well worth the investment in a child!

Reading: Books – It is said that each child should have a library consisting of 1,000 books in their bookshelves. These days, some parents are more likely to amass a large collection of DVDs and movies for their kids than books. However, reading teaches children about comprehension and helps them in reading  composition later in life. Also, their vocabulary and grasp of terms and complex concepts improve the more they read.  You can even get  them those silly Diary of a Wimpy Kid or BigNate  comic books, but make sure you try to find a book series with chapters in it too.

I recommend investing in a subscription service like  Epic! and get access to thousands of books each month for $7.99

Art  The often forgotten about part of STEAM education is the Arts. Stimulate a budding artists mind by investing in some pencils, charcoals, and a sketch pad and/or easel so they can create.

For your younger artist, I like Paw Patrol’s Carry Along Art Case ($11)

Music Music education is disappearing from schools as states deal with budget deficits and music lessons can be expensive. Fortunately, there are online programs and apps for free and low cost that can  help guide a child interested in learning an instrument. Invest in an instrument for the Holidays. We rent to owned instruments at the largest US retailer for musical instruments, Music & Arts.

For your singing Nightingales, let them explore their singing skills and have fun with everyone Lucky Voice Blue Mic Karaoke Kit ($80).

Christmas, Hannukah, Ramadaan or whatever holiday celebrated in December can be educational and include gifts that will help better your child in school. And they can be loads of fun too!
