Secrets to Getting Your Kids To Eat Better This Thanksgiving

A common worry parents have around Thanksgiving? Their children won’t eat well.

They might not even eat at all. The solution? Imagine Thanksgiving from the perspective of a child. You don’t whose going to be there, the food or the schedule. In short, you don’t know what’s going on. And, on top of all that, you’re expected to just go along, and get along. As long as your kids aren’t infants, it doesn’t matter how old they are.

Filling them in on the plans for the day can solve a lot.

Eating expert and Sociologist Dr. Dina Rose, author of”It’s Not About the Broccoli: Three Habits to Teach Your Kids for a Lifetime of Healthy Eating” offers these tips to help your children and you conquer Thanksgiving and Holiday Eating and create a lifetime of healthy eating habits without focusing solely on nutrition:

1.       DO tell children what will be on the menu — and when. Don’t assume they know. Then, brainstorm together how they’ll find something to eat, if they’re picky, or how they’ll manage all the sweets and treats.

2.       DO let your children eat a meal before leaving home (or in the car on the way to the main event) if they’ll be too tired or too distracted to eat at the meal, or if they’re worried they won’t be able to eat anything at all..

3.       DO help your children figure out what they really want to eat by doing some taste testing, but only if they’re up for it. Assuming some of the food is unfamiliar, fill a plate with one pea-sized bite of everything on offer.

4.       DO tell your children that after the taste test they can help themselves to anything they want. Resist the urge to “push” the healthy stuff.

5.       DO resist the urge to tell your kids to eat-up. Remind them to pay attention to their tummies.

6.       DO help your children save room for treats coming down the pike.

7.       DO keep some familiar   s in the car for the ride home if your child is unlikely to eat at the meal.

8.       DO teach your kids to bookend Thanksgiving with a couple of no-treat days before and after their holiday feast. Even if Thanksgiving is outrageous, this strategy will even things out. Then, let them figure out their own holiday favorite treats.

Good News:

1.      Many children pick at their food. Nibbling, rather than gorging, is a healthy holiday habit.

2.      Many children would rather play than schmooze by the appetizer table.

3.      The mindless eating that parents do is easily avoided for kids who would rather run around than sit around.

4.      Happy holiday memories are more important than healthy holiday eating.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

Selfies Are Driving a Surge in Nose Surgery Among GenY and Gen Z

Who would have thought the time would come when selfies would be changing the face of plastic surgery? Like literally!

That’s the result of new research which found that in the past year alone, 55 percent of plastic surgeons surveyed have had a patient bring in a photoshopped selfie of themselves to discuss their surgery goals, many of which include a Rhinoplasty procedure.

What’s happening is that  Millennials and Gen Z are looking at their selfies and bringing them to in to point what is wrong with their own look. They are also finding #nosegoals from celebrity profiles, specifically from Instagram.

*deep sigh*

The results of this survey reveal a substantial increase from 42 percent vs. the previous year!

How did we get here?

Prospective patients are now constantly using their phones, taking pictures of themselves, and using apps (such as face tune) that improve their less than desirable features and are visiting Plastic Surgeons for an aesthetic solution.

Dr. Philip J. Miller, Facial Plastic Surgeon based out of NYC as well as an avid Photographer explains why the selfie is the very wrong tool to be using as a barometer of one’s appearance.

“A selfie camera has a very wide-angle lens,” Dr. Miller explains. “That’s why, at arm’s length, you can capture several people in one photograph,” adding, “This wide-angle lens contain within it a deceiving distortion of the central part of the image relative to the outside.”

Think of the “fisheye” lenses which create immense distortions of a person’s face.

“Also, compounding to the distortion is the fact that selfies are usually taken under the worst lighting conditions,” he states. “As such, shadows are cast over the face in the most unfavorable locations,” but they also highlight and enhance features that are not at all that prominent under normal conditions.

These factors are why people  are going to him to alter their face based on their selfies. Watch Dr.Miller, an avid photographer, share his tips on taking the best selfie. Hint: part of it has to do with getting the camera as far away from your face as possible! Watch:

Tributes Pour In for Actress and Model Kim Porter

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Kim Porter, a model, actress and personality who I’ve frequently blogged about on this site, who died suddenly and unexpectedly yesterday at the very young age of 47.

Apparently Porter, who is mother to music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs‘ twin daughters D’Lila and Jessie James and son Christian; and a son Quincy with ex 90s R&B singer and actor Al B. Sure.

According to TMZ, Porter had be suffering from flu-like symptoms, and possibly pneumonia, for the past several weeks. Her cause is death has yet to be determined.

Although the Georgia-born model is known for her onscreen, runway and ad campaign career, she is more known for being a mom to some pretty amazing kids.

Porter and Diddy gave birth to their twin daughters in 2006. The girls began modeling at a very young age, as Bossip reports they landed their first print ad campaign in 2014 as spokesmodels for Ruum American Kids’ Wear.

Porter and Diddy gave birth to their son Christian ‘King’ Combs in 1998. Combs has gone on to become a model for Dolce & Gabbana and recently inked a deal to take part in Tommy Jeans’ Spring 2018 campaign. Combs also models for his father’s fashion line Sean John.

Quincy Taylor Brown was born on June 4, 1991  but  Diddy adopted him as his son later. Brown’s godfather is legendary musician and producer Quincy Jones, whom he is named after.

From a summary in Heavy:

In an interview with Essence Magazine, Porter details learning that Diddy had fathered a child with another woman named Sarah Chapman. The child, Chance Combs, was born five months after Jessie James and D’Lila. “It’s not an original script. He’s not the first man who’s cheated,” Porter explained. “He’s not the first man who’s had a baby outside of his relationship. He’s not the originator of this. But at this point in my life ? I have girls now ? it’s a different program.”

Porter also expressed regret over the fact that she didn’t learn about the other child directly from Diddy. “I would have preferred to find out from him because that’s a man,” she revealed. “I know it’s hard for anyone to say to their significant other, ‘I’ve gotten into some sh*t and I got a baby on the way.’ But men do get caught up in things; I’m not naive to that. Still, there’s a right and a wrong way to handle it. Because, most of all, we were friends. Even if I couldn’t have understood it as a woman, I would have understood it as a friend.”

Porter continued: “He told me that he may have gotten himself into a situation and he may have fathered another child outside the relationship and I said, ‘Really? Well, I already knew. I’m glad you decided to be a man,’ ” recalls Porter. “I was like, ‘Dude, this is so wack I can’t even respect you right now.’ And for me, once the respect is gone, I’m not even listening to you.”

You can tell from her social media posts that Porter was all about being a supportive mother to her children and from the tributes that have poured in on her behalf over night that she was also a sweet and caring person, in general.

Rest in peace, Ms. Porter.

10 Secrets to Getting a Better Night’s Rest

We’re not getting enough sleep and it is killing us. Did you know that 100,000 hospital deaths are caused by sleep deprived hospital staff. In the US, annually 1,550 die in fatal car crashes caused by driver fatigue and that number is 100,000 world wide. About 25M people suffer from sleep amnea and 70M suffer from some sort of sleep disorder with insomnia being the number one type of disorder.

The folks at Mattresstest.com put together an inforgraphic with 10 solid tips for getting a better night’s rest. Here they are:

First Time Ever Govt Recommendations for Toddlers Physical Activity

Even preschoolers don’t get enough exercise in America.

For the first time, the US Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) has released federal guidelines on physical activity, fitness, and health that include specific recommendations for preschool children between the ages of three and five years old. The 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, released this week (Nov. 12), are the result of 21 months of research from an advisory committee made up of 17 non-federal experts in physical activity and health.

The guidelines recommend that preschool kids be physically active for at least three hours a day. But the average US preschooler doesn’t meet that standard, according to available data. For example, a 2015 study published in Pediatrics looked at 98 preschoolers in 10 child-care centers in Seattle and found that they only got an average of about 48 minutes of exercise a day. That’s bad news both for kids and their caregivers.

Encouraging kids to be active

American children, including preschoolers, are increasingly sedentary—which can have with devastating consequences for their physical and mental health. Childhood obesity has more than tripled since the 1970s. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a lack of physical activities in kids and adolescents can increase their risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, low bone density, and breast, colon, endometrial, and lung cancers. There’s also an important linkbetween daily physical activity and better grades, school attendance, and cognitive skills like memory or concentration.

Carrie Underwood Set to Co-Host CMAs Tonight for 11th Time

Tonight, second-time mom-to-be Carrie Underwood co-hosts the Country Music Awards with Brad Paisley at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.  The American Idol alum has not let anything like being pregnant and incubating a whole new human stop her from performing the honors for the 11th time in a row.

Tonight will be the 52nd annual iteration of  the show dubbed “Country music’s biggest night on TV.”

Personally, I’m excited to see how she will be serving her baby bump as only Carrie can.

Since announcing news of her pregnancy this summer, Underwood has been seen rocking a sequinned mini at the 2018 American Music Awards at Microsoft Theater on October 9, 2018 in Los Angeles, California. Similarly, the “Think Before He Cheats” singer glistened and glowed at the arrivals of the 2018 CMT Artists of The Year event at Schermerhorn Symphony Center on October 17, 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee

That same night, she went short and glittery again while performing on stage.

Earlier that month, we spotted her super early in her pregnancy looking fab at the iHeartRadio Music Festival at T-Mobile Arena on September 22, 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

So we know to expect some ultimate swerve from this hard-working mama!

Marvel Stars Reflect On Founder and Creator Stan Lee’s Passing

Every parent to a fan of superhero comics, television series and movies should know a child’s favorite character and probably have a few of their own from childhood and today, the comic universe lost a pioneer and father figure in Marvel creator Stan Lee who died today at the age of 95.

Today, several of the celebrity women whose pregnancies we’ve covered in this blog left words of salute to the great Stan Lee who is recently famous for making obscure cameos in Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and films.

I caught the latest when he played a fellow gambler in The Black Panther release. Here is a quick rundown, excerpted from E! News roundup, of what our Bellytich Bumpwatch alums had to say about Lee’s passing and what he meant to them as actors.

Halle Berry– “RIP, Stan Lee. Thank you for sharing your incredible vision with us. We are eternally grateful to you and would not be the same without it,” tweeted Berry, who played Storm in three X-Men movies. “I am so honored to have played a part in your world and will forever look back on the opportunity

Scarlett Johansson

“The galaxy just gained another Dog Star,” the actress, who plays Black Widow in multiple films, told E! News in a statement. “Thankful everyday to be a small part of Stan’s universe. He was a legendary visionary and a true artist.”

Zoe Saldana

“Today we lost one of the greats. Stan Lee, you were an inspiration and superhero to us all,” the actress, who played Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for contributing so much- and giving us all something to aspire to!”

Evangeline Lily

Stan…more than a master of stories, you always seemed like a master of living,” the star of Ant-Man and the Wasp wrote on Instagram. “I will look to you for inspiration for the rest of my life. You live on. xoxo Your Wasp.”

Jessica Alba

Taking a moment to thank the great Stan Lee for his kindness,” the actress wrote on Instagram. “It was a huge honor to be part of your universe. The experience I had on The Fantastic Four playing Sue Storm/Invisible Woman was so meaningful as a young actress and made a huge impact on me. We will miss you, Stan Lee.”
