2018 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD {Family Vacay Vehicle Review}

blog review Mazda CX-9

A few school systems in several regions in America and across the globe have started a new school year already. Still, many more are still out and this means that families are sneaking in their last minute getaways and vacations. Personally,  I can share that on my various social media platform feeds, I see many friends and family on weekend and weeklong excursions.

On Sunday, my family of 5, my baby sis and niece did the same and headed to Virginia Beach about four hours south of our home outside DC.

To get there,  on the drive down, I partnered with Mazda USA and Driveshop  and tested out its signature top-of-the line luxury three-row crossover sports utility vehicle, the Mazda C-X9We ABSOLUTELY LOVED this vehicle and were honestly sad when we had to return it at the end of the week.

First, it looks really regal and very expensive! The atomic grey version of the premium vehicle we were generously loaned to drive came with decadent auburn interior leather seats.  The SUV itself doesn’t even look like a heavy cargo vehicle from the outside because the car’s design features a sloped rear and sleek aerodynamic exterior.

Very nice!

Full disclosure: this was my first time driving a keyless entry, push-button start vehicle and I was nervous about leaving the key in the vehicle,  but good thing, the SUV alarms if the engine is running and you walk away with the key.

Some of our adventures during the week, during which I celebrated my 19th wedding aniversary.

Tech Features

For today’s modern tech obsessed and addicted families, this vehicle is loaded with high tech features. This 2018 model comes with its own Wi-Fi. Also new for this year are two head rest videos with wireless headphones and remotes. For our drive up and back from Virginia Beach, the kids plugged in their Amazon

Firestick on one monitor and the Roku on another, then tethered our family’s unlimited wireless phones so they could enjoy Amazon, Hulu and Netflix on the trip.

There is an XM, Pandora, and other streaming services options. We could control the dashboard as a touch screen or using a dial on the center console. There are two USB ports in the center console, two inside the pull down arm rest and cup holder. The trunk and inside the passenger side panel both have cigarette lighter ports that can be used to house another dual USB port, making it possible to charge 8 different electronic devices at the same time if we wanted.

There is an active driver hologram on the window above the dashboard that shows the miles per hour being driven. I was in awe to see a small Stop sign appear on the windshield each time the car approaches a street with an actual Stop sign on the corner. During the highway drive, each time there was construction on the road, a yellow strip appeared on the hologram to warn the driver of the more dangerous road condition. Similarly, each time the car would get close to the shoulder, there was a signal in the hologram signal. Amazing!

Active Driving Display appears on the windshield above the driving console.

All of these features are great to supplement driver’s instincts and assist for the safety of the precious cargo, the family!

A push of the button activates the push-to-talk hands free dashboard and another button toggles the dashboard monitors: miles driven, Trip A and Trip B analytics for comparisons, the gas mileage, the vehicle service update and more.

The trunk features a hands free open. You just hit the key fob and the rear opens automatically, with one touch of a button near the keyhole, it auto closes. If something is in the way, the door will retract a bit and will not close.

Navigation

The navigation system is Smart and sophisticated.

Besides the standard navigation options, even when you haven’t programmed the vehicle to give you direction anywhere, as you drive, the dashboard indicates the name of a street  or cross street you are about to enter and gives you the speed limit sign for the road you will enter before you enter it so you know how fast oncoming cars should be traveling and how fast you should go once you merge into or enter that lane of traffic.

There is a rear camera that helps you get in and out of tight parking spots or to parallel park.

The Safety Features

The high tech options on the full package  vehicle we tested included innovative safety features. One of my faves is the blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. If a pedestrian is close to the car walking across the parking lot as you’re about to back out of a space or if another vehicle is close to passing, the CX-9 gives out an audible alert. You can also see it through the rear view camera which I also appreciated because while using it, I was able to back into a parking spot at the grocery store absolutely perfectly!

There is also a blind spot signal on the side mirrors that illuminates each time another vehicle on the road coasts in your blind spot. Neat! There is a touch emergency brake button on the center console that can be easily released with the touch of a button.

It also includes in suite of active safety features such as automatic high-beams, lane-keeping assist, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and adaptive cruise control.

Handling

The car had great maneuverability and handling, typical for any all wheel standard car. I looked it up and the vehicle comes with Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control, a system that reduces engine torque imperceptibly as the vehicle enters a corner to help improve cornering stability.

The CX-9 crossovers is a 2.5-liter turbocharged I4 making 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, which is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.  The SKYACTIV®-G 2.5T Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine is a reaction to the new category of hybrid vehicles on the market. It helps this SUV get more miles per gallon. We traveled about 4 hours and a little over 200 miles from Virginia Beach to right outside Washington, DC on a half tank of gas. That’s highway miles. Excellent fuel economy.

Luxury Comforts

Although we didn’t need it this trip, there are heated seats for the driver and front seat passenger and second row seats.

Reviews

It has a close to 5-star rating by Car and Driver magazine and is listed among its 10 Best SUV Cars and Trucks List.  Edmunds gives it close to 5 star ratings on most categories too!

Price

For $38,655, you can get the front-wheel-drive CX-9 Touring with the Premium package. That Touring Premium package is an additional $1750, but adds a long list of features, including navigation, automated emergency braking, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, SiriusXM satellite radio, LED fog lamps, and a power sunroof.

Overall Pros: This vehicle is great for a medium to large family of 3-7. It looks and feel great from the exterior to interior. The sporty sleek look gives it a very top-of-the line feel, comparable to other SUVs in the market, including luxury brands. The tech features are up to par with all of the innovation out there on the market and what modern, tech driven and connected families need. The safety features gives you an extra layer of security for the family.

Cons: The USB ports in the front in the center console is hard to reach when driving and the cigarette lighter one along the center console floor paneling is awkwardly placed and very difficult to reach. It would be better if it was placed below the dashboard so it is easier to maneuver.

While we appreciate the slope in the back giving off a more sporty feel, it took away cargo space so we weren’t able to carry as many suitcases because we had two extra people in our party. However, for the average family of 5 who are traveling on a road trip, you can easily fold down the third row to accommodate more bags back there.

Khloe Kardashian’s Bestie Malika Haqq Gave her A ‘PUSH Present’

Traditionally, a “push gift” or “push present” is something a spouse, boyfriend, fiance or partner gives to the woman who gives birth to the couple’s child after delivery, but in the celebrity reality TV world, things are never traditional.

Khloe Kardashian‘s bestie Malika Haqq gave her a diamond personalized ring bearing the name of the youngest Kardashian’s daughter  with Kardsahian’s estranged beau NBA star Tristan Thompson.

“Diamonds are always a part of life’s most meaningful moments, which is why I wanted to give this sweet ring to Khloe to celebrate becoming a mom to baby True,” the model and actress captioned an Instagram photo of Kardashian wearing a diamond studded ring that spells out True.

She ended the quote: “Diamonds are also mother nature’s greatest gift, so it had to be something natural. I wanted something that will stand the test of time and is rare, precious and unique. It just seemed like an authentic way to remember this beautiful time in Khloe’s life and in our friendship,” before tagging a diamond producer trade association’s insta, Real is Rare Real is a Diamond.

The love is symbiotic. Haqq’s  post came a few days after Kardashian came to Celebrity Big Brother and Dash Dolls alum’s  defense after a troll left a mean comment on one of Haqq’s photos.

In the comment section to a cute pic of Haqq in an oversized shirt and thigh high boots, the fan commented: “GIRL BYE!!!!! If it wasn’t for Khloé you would be a nobody… wait who are you again [sic]” to that Khloe replied to the comment:

“We are all entitled to our own opinions,” the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star clapped back. “And yes, love, you may have yours. But no need to be cruel when life is negative enough. But if it wasn’t for Malika then who knows where I would be emotionally.”

She went on to write, “She’s been my BFF since we were children. Loyalty and love means more to me than anything else ever could. Fame is fleeting. Malika is not.”

Nice!

Study: Inducing Pregnant Women At Term Reduces C-Section Rate

From NPR, a new report and study suggests that inducing pregnant women at term or close to term actually reduces the C-Section Rate. Listen and follow below:

Healthy women with normal pregnancies can opt to have labor induced without worrying that the decision will make a cesarean section more likely, according to a major study published in this week’s New England Journal of Medicine.

Obstetricians currently induce labor when a delivery has failed to progress, or if a woman is far overdue for giving birth. But when women who have no medical need for induced labor have talked to their doctors, “We’ve been saying, ‘Well you know one thing you need to know is it does increase the C-section rate,’ ” says. Dr. Uma Reddy, an obstetrics researcher at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

That advice was based on some older medical research. But researchers had doubts about that conclusion. So Reddy helped organize a study involving more than 6,000 first-time mothers with uncomplicated pregnancies, to put the idea to the test.

Half the pregnant women followed the normal course of labor; the other half had labor induced when the baby was full term, at 39 weeks. Overall, mothers and babies did fine when labor was induced with a drug.

“I think the most surprising finding was a decrease in the C-section rate,” Reddy says.

That rate dropped from 22 percent among the women who weren’t automatically induced to 19 percent for those whose labor was induced. Dr. William Grobman, the study’s first author and a professor of obstetrics at Northwestern University, says it’s an important goal to reduce the rate of cesarean sections in the U.S. So even a small percentage drop in the rate can have benefits overall.

But an individual woman might or might not consider that 3-percentage-point drop a big deal. “I think that’s not really for me to decide,” he says. “I think that’s for patients to decide.

Serena Williams Opens Up About Dealing With Postpartum Blues

In the same week that one of her good friends Beyonce opened up about having preeclampsia before delivering her twins Sir and Rumi, 23-times Grand Slam Tennis champ Serena Williams revealed that she was in the middle of dealing with postpartum blues when she pulled out of the  Rogers Cup tournament citing “personal reasons.”

In an emotional Instagram post, she wrote: “Not only was I accepting some tough personal stuff, but I just was in a funk. Mostly, I felt like I was not a good mom,” adding, “it’s totally normal to feel like I’m not doing enough for my baby…We have all been there. I work a lot, I train, and I’m trying to be the best athlete I can be. However, that means although I have been with her every day of her life, I’m not around as much as I would like to be.”

Williams, who recently gave birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia with husband Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, also offered  gave up some encouraging words to other moms out there dealing with similar issues:

“Most of you moms deal with the same thing. Whether stay-at-home or working, finding that balance with kids is a true art. You are the true heroes.” Read the post and check out a TODAY video on the story below:

Last week was not easy for me. Not only was I accepting some tough personal stuff, but I just was in a funk. Mostly, I felt like I was not a good mom. I read several articles that said postpartum emotions can last up to 3 years if not dealt with. I like communication best. Talking things through with my mom, my sisters, my friends let me know that my feelings are totally normal. It’s totally normal to feel like I’m not doing enough for my baby. We have all been there. I work a lot, I train, and I’m trying to be the best athlete I can be. However, that means although I have been with her every day of her life, I’m not around as much as I would like to be. Most of you moms deal with the same thing. Whether stay-at-home or working, finding that balance with kids is a true art. You are the true heroes. I’m here to say: if you are having a rough day or week–it’s ok–I am, too!!! There’s always tomm!

These Plane Travel Tips Could Save you Neck and Back Pain

Vacations are usually meant to be relaxing, but traveling can cause increased stress on the body, and ultimately be a pain in the neck!

Especially for moms-to-be or women who have recently given birth, the seats in airplanes, cars, trains, and buses are not always the most comfortable. With 80% of Americans suffering from back pain, the thought of a long trip can be discouraging. Luckily, the pain associated with travel can be greatly reduced, and in many cases avoided.

Dr. Kenneth Hansraj, a spinal and orthopedic surgeon specializing in cervical, thoracic and lumbar procedures for example laminectomies and spinal fusions, offers these travel tips to help keep your spine comfortable and healthy while on the go:

Check Your Posture: Sitting for prolonged periods can strain your back, and your positioning can make it even worse. To provide yourself with the most relief, make sure your back is aligned against the back of the seat and your headrest is supporting the middle of your head. Keep your shoulders straight and avoid rounding forward. Both feet should be firmly resting on the floor

Smart Preparation: Reduce the time spent standing in lines by planning ahead. Purchasing electronic tickets, acquire elite frequent flyer status, take advantage of digital electronic check-in by smart phone, and check your luggage curbside

Travel Light: Resist the urge to over-pack and reduce the stress on your shoulders and spine. Choose a light suitcase with wheels and a handle for rolling

Tilts: Tilting your seat backward, with a pillow behind your back in proper posture will lead to the efficient loading of your spine. Behind your neck rests are usually two foldable pads that can be adjusted close to your neck. This prevents sleeping with your neck in an awkward position

It’s all in the legs: Keep your legs out in the extended position. The bent or flexed position leads to your leg veins being stagnant, and may lead to a blood clot. It is important to get up and walk, stretching the legs and arms at least once an hour

Stretch: When all else fails keep moving! Simple stretches of the neck, shoulders, and back will help keep the blood flowing. Blood brings important nutrients and oxygen to the structures of the back. This helps to stimulate the soft tissues in your back and keeps them from stiffening, which can reduce aches. Even a few seconds of stretching and moving is better than not doing anything at all!

Breathe: Place your hands on your abdominal area and feel your belly move as you inhale and exhale. Do this as many times a day as possible to improve your posture and overall spinal health.

Intention: Realize that the trip itself is a destination to be planned and thoroughly enjoyed. Watch your intentions. “I have a gorgeous hour to listen to my music, my book, or chat with a friend” is a better intention than “Ugh, I’m a prisoner on this trip.”

Best Hours: Face it! Some of our best hours of our lives are spent travelling. Be thoughtful about it. Choose a vehicle that is safe, ergonomic, comfortable and that you love. Upgrade to business class if possible (less expensive, booked 1 month early).

See Opportunity in Delays: Expect delays. Look for the opportunities to read a book, or watch a movie and connect with your travel companion. Anger and frustration leads to shallow breathing, stiff muscles and pain.

Safe travels!

Carrie Underwood Is Expecting Baby Number 2!

Country music pop star Carrie Underwood and her husband Mike Fisher are expecting their second child. As E! reports:

“You might be wondering or asking, ‘Carrie, why is your tour starting in May?’ Well…yay! Mike and Isaiah and I are absolute over the moon and excited to be adding a little fish to our pond,” Underwood said in a social media video, as the camera panned up to balloons spelling out B-A-B-Y. “This has been a dream come true with the album and baby news and all that stuff,” she added. “We are just so excited and just so glad that you guys can share in this with us and be a part of this with us. I love you guys. We’ll see you on the road in 2019. Have a great day!” The singer has not revealed how far along she is in her pregnancy, or if she knows the baby’s sex.

For her pregnancy reveal, she modeled the CALIA by Carrie Underwood metallic foil perforated half zip jacket in rose gold, available at DICK’s Sporting Goods or at CALIA Studio.

Underwood recently spoke about wanting to have more children in Redbook. “I’m 35, so we may have missed our chance to have a big family,” she confessed in the September issue. “We always talk about adoption and about doing it when our child or children are a little older.”

The couple also has a son, Isaiah Michael Fisher, 3. Congrats!

The Handsfree Breastpump You Get When Ready to Return to Work (REVIEW)

Necessity is the mother of invention. That is why four savvy sisters (out of a family of nine) got together with their shared vision of creating a simple solution for busy sophisticated modern working moms who need a solution for pumping on the go and created a perfect solution!

Simple Wishes founders, sisters and moms of breastfed babies.

Simple Wishes is a chic, relatively new, hands-free pumping bra bustier on the market that can be attached to any of the most popular breast pumps,  Medela, Philips AVENT, Lansinoh, Bellema, Evenflo, and Spectra Baby. The hands-free apparatus lets multi-tasking moms go about their day and be more productive while they pump, take a break, work in the office or unwind at the end of the day, or pump while baby is sleep to relieve milk build up.

The bra we received to review is made of quality material but is still soft and supple to the touch. It is stylish while functional and is made with a thoughtful design that provides full breast support but is much more affordable for the quality compared to other nursing bustiers on the market!

The sister founders say they learned through their own mother’s experience breastfeeding all nine of us that there are tremendous benefits, however, there can be challenges. “Through our products, we strive to alleviate some of those challenges to help empower women to continue providing such wonderful nutrition for their baby,” they write on the company’s website.

The bra holds the bottle firmly and securely in place and does the work while mom goes about her business getting other stuff done!

We are not the only ones who feel so.

The product has a close to perfect review star rating on Amazon and most of the verified purchasers say they love that the product has a Velcro panel which provides versatility. So if you like yours tighter or looser, you can easily adjust it to suit without working about fasteners and adjusters that do not work.

As any nursing mom knows, your breast can grow in size as milk fills up and get smaller. This nursing bra is accommodating.  It comes with straps that are optional and is reversible, meaning that it can be zippered going up or down. Like we said, totally customizable  to each woman’s individual needs an comfort.

The best part is that the bra slips on easily with or without removing nursing bra and shirt. This is great in situations like work when you may not have the time, privacy or accommodation to get completely unrobed on top, neither want to!

Elastic reinforcement has been built into the top of the bra for a secure fit, ensuring no slipping. It fits comfortably without added pressure that cuts into the skin.

For added versatility and support, the bra’s convertible design allows it to be worn as a strapless band or in tank, racer-back, or halter style. We like the halter style look but for women with ample breast, the tank or racer-back hold provides extra needed support.

For a product that has not been on the market for too long, it has taken off and is being well accepted and loved by new moms and vets alike.

If you’re in the market for a supplement to your breastfeeding needs and goals, do consider investing in this. The item retails for about $30 and if you order from Amazon and have Prime, shipping is FREE!  The product sells in retail stores around the country too! Find a nearby seller HERE!

If you purchase through the Simple Wishes website and join its mailing list, you get 10% off your first purchase! Sweet!

Expecting moms who plan to breastfeed and/or return to work while still nursing, add this product to your wish list or registry! T

Beyonce Vogue Cover Takeover: Talks Twins’ Labor, Delivery, Motherhood (PHOTOS)

In an unprecedented move, Vogue permitted Beyoncé to have editorial control over its popular September issue and not only did Queen Bey make history by hiring the magazine’s first Black photographer, Travis Wright, in its 126 history to shoot a cover, but she also gave us unprecedented insight into her pregnancy, labor, delivery and her perspective motherhood in her own in-person first person narrative!

It is a glorious issue! On Newsstands now. Here are some of the nuggets she shared with us all:

About the evolution of the magazine and fashion industry towards black people and people of color:

“When I first started, 21 years ago, I was told that it was hard for me to get onto covers of magazines because black people did not sell,” Beyonce told the magazine. “Clearly that has been proven a myth. Not only is an African-American on the cover of the most important month for Vogue, this is the first-ever Vogue cover shot by an African-American photographer.”

About the delivery of her twins who were born via C-section due to Preeclampsia:

“I was 218 pounds the day I gave birth to Rumi and Sir,” she wrote. “I was swollen from toxemia and had been on bed rest for over a month. My health and my babies’ health were in danger, so I had an emergency C-section. We spent many weeks in the NICU.”

It was a shocking experience that she credits her husband, Jay Z for helping her deal with:

“My husband was a soldier and such a strong support system for me,” she continues. “I was in survival mode and did not grasp it all until months later.”

About realizing that C-Section recovery takes a lot longer and is harder than vaginal birth recovery:

“After the C-section, my core felt different,” she stated. “It had been major surgery. Some of your organs are shifted temporarily, and in rare cases, removed temporarily during delivery. I am not sure everyone understands that. I needed time to heal, to recover.”

About embracing her new extra set of curves that have come compliments of being a mom to three:

After giving birth, “my core felt different,” she shared, and  added that he “embraced being curvier” and as she was preparing for her Coachella headlining shows.  And thought she went vegan temporarily, gave up coffee, alcohol and fruit drinks while getting in shame for that performance, she is cool with her different, more full and rounder body.

“To this day my arms, shoulders, breasts, and thighs are fuller,” she wrote. “I have a little mommy pouch, and I’m in no rush to get rid of it. I think it’s real. Whenever I’m ready to get a six-pack, I will go into beast zone and work my (butt) off until I have it. But right now, my (bigger bikini area) and I feel like we are meant to be.”

About lessons from succumbing to societal pressures for celeb women to peel off baby weight shortly after giving birth:

“I believed in the things society said about how my body should look,” she wrote. “I put pressure on myself to lose all the baby weight in three months, and scheduled a small tour to assure I would do it. Looking back, that was crazy.”

About the different way she is approaching recovering from twin delivery:

“During my recovery, I gave myself self-love and self-care, and I embraced being curvier,” the “Apesh*it” singer pens.  “I accepted what my body wanted to be… was patient with myself and enjoyed my fuller curves.”

Going back to Natural for the Vogue shoot

She purposefully went with the bare stripped away, back to nature, theme and for the Vogue shoot avoided “the wigs and hair extensions” and wore scant makeup in an attempt to inspire other women to embrace their natural bodies.

On growth from her 20s to today:

“I look at the woman I was in my 20s and I see a young lady growing into confidence but intent on pleasing everyone around her,” the multi-platinum global artist revealed. “I now feel so much more beautiful, so much sexier, so much more interesting. And so much more powerful.”

About connection to her slave and African ancestry:

“I researched my ancestry recently and learned that I come from a slave owner who fell in love with and married a slave,” she shared. “I questioned what it meant and tried to put it into perspective. I now believe it’s why God blessed me with my twins. Male and female energy was able to coexist and grow in my blood for the first time,” adding,  “I pray that I am able to break the generational curses in my family and that my children will have less complicated lives.”

On exposing her heritage and roots and culture to larger audience during Coachella:

“I had a clear vision for Coachella. I was so specific because I’d seen it, I’d heard it, and it was already written inside of me,” she writes about singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” known as the black national anthem, during her performance and quoting Malcolm X in between songs.

“I know that most of the young people on the stage and in the audience did not know the history of the black national anthem before Coachella. But they understood the feeling it gave them,” she explained. “It was a celebration of all the people who sacrificed more than we could ever imagine, who moved the world forward so that it could welcome a woman of color to headline such a festival.”

About what she wishes for her daughters and son:

As the mother of two girls, Beyonce says she wants her daughters to know that they can be anything, “CEOs, as bosses, and that they know they can write the script for their own lives.”

“They don’t have to be a certain type or fit into a specific category. They don’t have to be politically correct, as long as they’re authentic, respectful, compassionate, and empathetic,” she writes. “I want the same things for my son. I want him to know that he can be strong and brave but that he can also be sensitive and kind. I want my son to have a high emotional IQ where he is free to be caring, truthful, and honest. It’s everything a woman wants in a man, and yet we don’t teach it to our boys.”

Beyonce is currently embarking on the On The Run II tour with Jay-Z, which concludes on Oct. 4 in Seattle.

Awesome!
