How to Keep Your Children Busy In Hotels During Summer Travel

If you’re on vacation, chances are there will be a lot of down time in the hotel room. Your child may find the lack of space in the room restrictive, which could prompt unruly behavior or temper tantrums. Help them avoid boredom or cabin fever with some fun games and toys. It’s unrealistic to bring the contents of the playroom with you on vacation. However, you can bring along some compact game and toy options, or you can create your own activities that require little to no equipment. Here are some ways you can keep your little ones entertained during your hotel stay:

Dress-Up

If you have a little girl, have a mini-fashion show in your hotel room. The two of you can get her prepared for her debut with outfit preparation followed by spa services. Perform a special facial, paint nails and create a fun hair-do. You can easily pack a few accent pieces in your suitcase, like ribbon, costume jewelry or your daughter’s favorite dress. This activity is ideal for the child who enjoys planning and is enthusiastic about dress-up. It will require some patience on her part– but if you keep the energy high and have fun, it will keep her occupied and the two of you will have a blast.

Puzzles

Puzzles are time-consuming activities that can keep a child’s attention. If you have enough room in your luggage, pack some jigsaw puzzles. The two of you should pick out a jigsaw that is your child’s favorite animal or animated character, so they’re excited about the final product. The more enthusiastic they are about the content, the more time they’ll commit. If you have limited space for jigsaws, you can bring along some printed word puzzles. Include terms or words that are at your child’s reading level. You can make the theme of the puzzle reflect your child’s favorite hobbies, books or movies.

Card Games

Cards are compact and can be easily transported–they make a great alternative to board games. You can bring along a pack of regular playing cards for games like go fish, speed or gin rummy. Bicycle offers a six pack of kids card games that include Go Fish, Slap Jack, Memory, Matching, Old Maid and Crazy Eights. These cards are well-illustrated, colorful and designed especially for kids. Uno is another fun card game that is great for the entire family, as you can incorporate many players.

Music Video

Get the creative juices flowing and produce a music video with your kid. They can choose their favorite song, and the two of you can storyboard the visual elements. You can orchestrate outfits and practice choreographed dance moves. The video can be recorded on your tablet or smartphone. Many smartphones have video editing capabilities or apps, so you can instantly assemble the footage and polish it up for presentation. Your child will love to watch themselves perform and it is a fun, creative activity the two of you can do together.

Bath Adventure

Liven up bathtime and make the tub an adventurous oasis. The tub is like a mini pool where your kids can hang out and play with their bath toys. Bring along the essential rubber ducky or foam figures, so your child can entertain themselves with these toys. You also can go one step further and create an exciting bath adventure. You can purchase themed bath kits at toy stores. The Pirates of the Tub play set includes 36 foam pieces that make pirate figurines, islands, a raft, boats and the Jolly Roger flag. The pieces will stick onto tiles, the wall or sides of the bath tub. The set also includes three pirate squirters that your kid will love.

Tia Mowry Hardict Battles Back After Gestational Diabetes Diagnosis

Tia Mowry Hardrict recently revealed that she contracted gestational diabetes while pregnant with her second child, daughter Cairo Tiahna.

“After being diagnosed with #gestationaldiabetes, I was lost for words,” she captioned a video of herself and her trainer getting in some exercise. “Never ever did I think, THIS could happen to me. Most of the time, doctors say it will go away after birth, however, it does put you at a higher risk for diabetes later in life. Time to get back on track. Making healthy choices and moving :). ?? Follow my @igtvworld for more updates! Xx”

She is correct! About half of all women who develop gestational diabetes are likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life according to the Centers for Disease Control. Babies too whose mothers have gestational diabetes are at higher risk of being born early, having low blood sugar, and developing obesity later in life.

The key is to eat healthy, maintain a healthy diet, that includes leafy vegetables, fruits and wholesome food to stave them off. Good for Mowry Hardrict for being proactive!

For those not yet pregnant or still in the early stages of your pregnancy, compared to usual care, lifestyle interventions reduced the overall risk of developing gestational diabetes by 32%. Watch your sugar and caloric intake, get plenty of prenatal exercise in like walking and monitor your food portions and you should be okay!

Meanwhile, the 2nd-time new mom has been keeping her fans and followers updated with her post natal plans and showing off photos of her hubby and son with Cory Hardrict’s dead ringer, baby Cairo Tiahna Hardrict, who has the same monogram  (CTH) as big brother Cree Taylor Hardict, similar to how their cousins, Tamera Mowry-Housley‘s children have the same monogram (ATH): Aden Tanner Housley and Ariah Talea Housley.

Your Guide to My Ethnic Braided Styles and How to Get the LOOK!

A few years ago, I started a beauty blog named for myself dedicated to ethnic braided hair called JJBraids.com.

I’ve worn my hair in variety of braided styles for over a decade and usually get stopped in the streets or inboxed by friends, and strangers asking me what type of style was my hair, what particular extensions, if any, were added, and which size, color, length they were; and finally, who did it.

The answer to the last question is easy: my hair braider Dorcas N’Ja who also used to be the personal hair stylist to Venus and Serena Williams and their mom and other sisters. She used to travel down to Florida to do the women’s hair and all, though she has since retired from travel styling.

My blog has taken off and has become one of few resources on the web dedicated to ethnic braided hair styles only.

While a lot of people cannot travel to DC, where Ms. N’Da is located, they can purchase the same extensions and take them to their nearest stylist. My blog has a stylist finder you can access HERE!.

Below are my most popular styles – based on viewer and friends’ preference and where on Amazon or online you can purchase similar hair extensions.

Crochet Braids are all the rage these days. In this article’s header is my hair in crochet braids, a technique that involves cornrowing the natural hair flat and down or around, then adding extensions the same way one would crochet a scarf or sweater. Really! I posted a tutorial on my blog HERE.

The reason why this technique of wearing braided styles is so popular these days is because they take a fraction of the time to install compared to individual braids which can take anywhere from 8-16 hours to install, depending on the length and width.  Ms. N’Da usually takes a little over an hour to do my entire head of hair using the crochet method! Imagine!

The grade, texture, length, color of the hair above and where to get it can be found HERE!

Crochet styles are usually curly so a lot of people were surprised to learn that this straight pressed hair I wore to my sister’s wedding last year is actually crochet braids!

The grade, texture, length, color of the hair and where to get it can be found HERE!

Also above is crochet but smaller curls.

The grade, texture, length, color of the hair and where to get it can be found HERE!

When bright colored hair came into fashion, I couldn’t help but experiment with it also. It is also a crochet style.

The grade, texture, length, color of the hair and where to get it can be found HERE!

Yes, these look like real dread locks, sister locs, Goddess locs, water locs (they have so many different names depending on their width, softness, loosness, wavy-ness) but they are actually faux locs installed in my hair…yes, crochet style again!

I purchased about 4-5 packs of this hair  length, color of the hair and where to get it can be found HERE!

Before crochet braided styling of braids were hot, people used to do half individual braids and half weave. The braider would install the edges and front of the hair in traditional micro, micro mini or medium sized indivual braids, then use the hair weaving method on the middle.

It saved time as well, but unlike crochet braids, weaved hair grows out much faster and needs to be redone more frequently. Well that was my experience anyway.

If you like this style above, you can get my brownish auburn weave here and a matching wavy braided hair HERE!

Waist and bottom-length individual braids, installed in tiny squares across the entire head and braided all the way down can last a long time, but they take a good 14 hours to install if you get one person to do it. If you go to a hair braiding salon or gallery where a bunch of women work, you may have 2-3 working at the same time on your hair which will cut down the time tremendously. You can use the cheapest extensions, Kanekelon on this style which is great because it usually costs a lot of labor time to put in and stylists charge a lot more too.

I purchased about 4-5 packs of this hair  length, color of the hair and where to get it can be found HERE!

Here is a shorter version of the same style with a little thicker width above and a bob style below.

The following three photos are also achieved using deep wave Kanekelon synthetic hair in Ombre below that you can get HERE!

For a long while, a lot of people who wore their hair in kinky, puffy, or Nubian twists achieved this look infusing with coarse 100% kanekalon  or toyokalon fibers. Make sure to get the ones that are shorter and puffy packed. You can purchase a similar style HERE!

The following four styles were achieved using this hair.

Finally, in between styles, I wear my natural hair out like above or wear wigs like the ones below you can get from any hair and beauty supply store. Good luck achieving one or more of these looks this year!

Best Tips for Caring for Your Child’s Hair

Kids aren’t exactly known for their wellness routines. Most children would rather spend more time playing than styling their own hair, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take matters into your own hands. Teaching proper self-care is a vital step towards preparing kids to be and look their best.

You probably already know you can do a lot with your kid’s hair. You can brush it, let it grow, straighten it, or spike it with gel. Yet, it’s up to your kids whether or not they actually let you do these things. Nobody wants their kids walking around with perpetual bedhead, so let’s talk about the best ways to care for your child’s hair.

Start with Healthy Habits

Like teaching your kids to eat their veggies, you can lead by example by showing kids the best ways to keep their hair clean and healthy. Depending on the nature of your child’s hair, they might not need to wash it every day. Dry hair can get away with not being cleaned with shampoo every day while oily hair or dirty hair might require a rough scrub.

Teach your child the best way to wash his or her hair safely. Simple things like using your fingertips instead of nails to scrub the scalp might not be evident to kids without instruction. Show them how to keep shampoo or conditioner from their eyes by leaning the head back and rinsing away from the face.

After the shower or bath, help your child detangle their hair. Show them that untangling their hair is essential to keep their hair looking its best. Use a children’s detangler to make untangling their hair easy and pain-free. Get into a routine with your child to run through the hair care basics every day.

Learn About Your Kid’s Hair

Your children might have a different hair type than you, and it’s essential to learn the unique ways to care for this new kind locks. Curly, natural hair, for example, requires a lot of different care than naturally straight hair. Don’t buy into hair myths that might leave you doing the wrong things with your kid’s hair.

It’s okay to experiment with different products with your kid’s hair. They’ll look to you for guidance to find the best styling tools as they get older, so learning early on can be a good first step. Most kids aren’t interested in trying hot tools or heat styling, so look for easy products they can incorporate into their existing hair routine.

Empower Your Kids

Kids want to feel like they’re in control. They likely have a lot of opinions on how their hair should look. While you don’t have to listen when your kid wants to cut off all her hair or dye it magenta, you should empower them to take part in their own haircare.

Letting children make small decisions about their own hairstyles is a great way to involve them in their own development. They want to feel heard and in charge of their own bodies, so give them the ability to control their own hair length or how they’ll wear their hair to school in the mornings.

Be a Strong Example

The most important thing you can do when it comes to your child and his or her hair is to be a good example. Kids feed their emotions and opinions off of the adults around them. If your child looks up to you, then you don’t want him or her to catch you being negative about your own hair.

Keep the negativity to a minimum not only when talking about handling your own children’s hair, but also your own hairstyle. Kids will quickly pick up on your feelings, and they might even start repeating these things themselves. While it can be frustrating to manage new hair, stay calm and understanding. If your kids see as a positive hair influence, they will carry that into their own lives.

Kids don’t care very much about their hair, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to. Proper hair care starts at home, and the sooner you teach children to value their own self-care, the better. Be a positive example for your kids by showing them how to not only take care of themselves but how to be confident with their own hair.

OMG! Princess Charlotte Is the New Harper Beckham/Suri Cruise

Yesterday, the fact the Queen of England wore a brooch The Obamas gave her while meeting US President Trump was trending as people in social media referred to her as the “Queen of Shade”. It looks like her great granddaughter, Princess Charlotte, has some snarky non-verbal shading skills of her own.

While attending her baby brother Prince Louis‘ Christening at St. Jame’s Palace in London on July 9,Prince George and Princess Charlotte entered holding their father Prince William’s hands, while mom, Kate Middleton followed behind holding Prince Louis in her arms.

Charlotte shot the snapping press one fierce look that was reminiscent to Suri Cruise and Harper Beckham back when those two were the “it” celebrity baby darlings.

Dressed in a blue floral frock with her hair parted in the middle, the princess wore a blue headband that had a bow attached at the to with matching blue shoes and white socks.

Big bro donned navy knickers and a crisp white short sleeve shirt paired with navy socks and shoes.

Duchess Catherine stuck with her fave Alexander McQueen. Kate wore similar ensembles for George and Charlotte’s christening’s marking Louis’ as the third time wearing the beloved designer. Kate nailed her look and as the saying goes if it isn’t broke don’t fix it.

12 Ways to Get Your Family To Eat Healthier

Being a parent can be difficult, especially at mealtimes.

Children can be very fussy when it comes to trying new foods, especially those of a healthy, nutritional value. If it’s green, it must be mean! However, there are ways we can still encourage our children to eat healthily, and here some ideas in how to do it.

1. Give informed advice

If it isn’t made from chocolate, your children may turn their noses up at what you put in front of them. However, a little education goes a long way. Explain to your child in fun and creative ways why choosing foods of nutritional value are better than eating junk food. Let them know what foods will make them better at sports. Tell them how a healthy breakfast is ideal for boosting their brain cells. We often tell our children to do something without explanation, so start as early as you can with good parental advice.

2. Place healthy food in reach

Whenever you bake cookies, you can guarantee your child will not be too far away, eager for a tasty snack. Instead, have healthy foods placed around the house, such as a fruit bowl on the table, so when they are hungry, they will be tempted by the more healthy choice on offer.

3. Grow your food

Most children hate vegetables. However, if they have been given the opportunity to grow their own, they might take ownership of the food and begin to eat it.

4. Don’t be bossy

The more you order your child to eat that plate of broccoli, the less likely they are going to do it. Instead, consider the foods your child enjoys and add to them to make a healthier option. For example, have a chocolate dip with the strawberries, or have a look at Healthy But Smart’s list of food processors, for those delicious fruit smoothies.

5. Prepare a buffet

Children enjoy choice, so have a range of foods on offer. From pasta shapes to cheese rolls, choose food that looks and tastes good, with that all important nutritional value.

6. Take it slow

Don’t introduce too many new foods quickly. Perhaps try something different each week. If they don’t eat it, tell them that sometimes taste buds take a while to get used to something. That gives you the opportunity to return to that food down the line, giving your child a fun reason to see if they like it better.

7. A spoonful of sugar

We all know too much sugar can be bad for us. However, to misquote Mary Poppins, a spoonful of sugar can help the broccoli go down. Sprinkle a little bit of sugar on the food your child finds disagreeable, and it may be easier for them to eat.

8. Make eating fun

Be creative with your children’s foods. Give the peas silly names, and make fun patterns on the plate. Use cookie cutters to make funny food shapes. Make a pizza together, letting your child design the food on the base, such as a smiley face or a rocket ship. The more fun they have in cooking with you, the more likely they are to eat what they have created.

9. Allow for treats

Don’t be so health conscious that your child never gets to eat what their friends are. The occasional ice cream, chocolate, and popcorn are fine. Everything needs to be done in moderation, but a world without candy floss is a very boring one.

10. Be a good role model

Practice what you preach. Don’t give your child a plate of broccoli while you tuck into a burger. Your child looks at you for a good example, so be mindful of your own eating habits.

11. Let your kids plan dinner

As dodgy as this sounds, giving your children control over planning one mealtime a week may provide surprising results. Ask them to think about a healthy menu and put options in front of them. As you go shopping, as stressful as it can be, let them pick the foods they want for their chosen mealtime. If all goes wrong and they insist on french fries with chocolate, go for it, with the rule that they must eat your food choices on the other days of the week

12. Talk to your doctor

If you have concerns about your child’s eating habits, or you are considering putting them on a diet, talk to a doctor first. Whether you think your child is too fat or thin, it is always better to seek expert advice.

Good luck parents!

Model Breastfeeds 5 Month Old On Sports Illustrated Runway

The 2018 Sports Illustrated Swim Search show was supposed to be all about bikini bodies, but that wasn’t necessarily the case. The magazine, which is famous for its annual Swimsuit Issue, was championing motherhood and breastfeeding at its recent model casting competition.

Mara Martin, who was one of 16 finalists in the Swim Search show, was breastfeeding her 5-month-old daughter Aria while strutting her stuff on the catwalk. The new mom walked the runway in a gold two-piece bikini at the event held as a part of Miami Swim Week on Sunday, July 15 at the W Hotel in South Beach, Miami.

Her appearance with her baby drew loud cheers and applause from the audience. Sports Illustrated shared on its Instagram account a video of Mara walking the runway while carrying her baby. The comment section was flooded with messages praising the mum for normalizing breastfeeding at work.

Mara also shared her photos with her daughter on the catwalk on her own Instagram page. “I can’t believe I am waking up to headlines with me and my daughter in them for doing something I do every day. It is truly so humbling and unreal to say the least. I’m so grateful to be able to share this message and hopefully normalize breastfeeding and also show others that women CAN DO IT ALL!” she wrote in the caption.

Wow! WHAT A NIGHT! Words can’t even describe how amazing I feel after being picked to walk the runway for @si_swimsuit. Anyone who knows me, knows it has been a life long dream of mine. I can’t believe I am waking up to headlines with me and my daughter in them for doing something I do every day. It is truly so humbling and unreal to say the least. I’m so grateful to be able to share this message and hopefully normalize breastfeeding and also show others that women CAN DO IT ALL! But to be honest, the real reason I can’t believe it is a headline is because it shouldn’t be a headline!!! My story of being a mother and feeding her while walking is just that. Last night there are far more deserving headlines that our world should see. One woman is going to boot camp in two weeks to serve our country (@shauntness), one woman had a double mastectomy (@allynrose), and another is a cancer survivor, 2x paralympic gold medalist, as well as a mother herself (@bren_hucks you rock) Those are the stories that our world should be discussing!!!! Just thinking about all that was represented there… I desperately need to give the most thanks to @mj_day for this. She supported me in what I did last night. Without her support this wouldn’t even be discussed!!!! She and the entire Sports Illustrated family are the most amazing and incredible team to have worked with. THANK YOU for letting all 16 of us be our true selves, strong beautiful women!!! Because of you, my daughter is going to grow up in a better world, where she will always feel this way!!!!!! Lastly, to every single woman that rocked that runway with me. Be proud. I know I am of you! You all have inspired me in ways unimaginable. I love you all!!! #siswimsearch

RHOA’s Kenya Moore Shares Bare Pregnant Bump Photo

Bravo TV
‘s Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kenya Moore used the weekend to give her fans and followers in social media an update on her pregnancy by sharing a photo of her bare pregnant belly.

“#BabyDaly is growing! I’m feeling much better now and baby is giving me amazing skin and I’m not having crazy cravings,” she captioned a photo of herself in a sports bra and cropped yoga pants. Actually, I’m eating less bc baby is moving up. So far all the tests and ultrasounds say baby is healthy! Thank God. Please continue to pray for our family! #miraclebaby #weloveyou #itsnevertoolate #GodsSpeed #ThatsMrsDalyToYou #babybump #ThankYouJehovah #IVF”

Moore has been plagued by reports, rumors and verbal assaults calling her pregnancy fake so hopefully this photo will serve to quiet them down a bit. Somehow, I’m guessing it won’t stop the conspiracy theorists at all.
