Politic and Civically Active Youth End Up More Educated, With Higher Incomes

Participating in political activism may be good for our teenagers, according to a new research report.

In a study published this past January in the journal Child Development, late adolescents and young adults who voted, volunteered or engaged in activism ultimately went further in school and had higher incomes than those who did not mobilize for political or social change.

Researchers from Wake Forest School of Medicine, Fordham University and the University of Massachusetts  tracked close to 10,000 young people from a wide variety of ethnic, racial and economic backgrounds and measured the long-term implications of youth political and social engagement.

Fascinating enough, they discovered  a link between civic activity and better academic and financial outcomes. This result was regardless of early school performance and parental education levels, two factors that usually  are drivers in later success.

“Having meaningful opportunities to volunteer or be involved in activism may change how young people think about themselves or their possibilities for the future,”  study lead author Parissa Ballard, an assistant professor in the department of family and community medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine, said.

Sciatica Relief According to Jordin Sparks

Jordin Sparks reminded her fans of some of the odd ailments of pregnancy when she shared a photo of herself doing natural physical therapy to alleviate her sciatic nerve pain.

“This little boy wants to be on my literal nerves today,” the former American Idol winner captioned a photo of herself on a large balance ball, adding:

“The bottom of my rib cage is numb & I have some shooting pain down my right leg so I’m stretching on my exercise ball. Phew! But it will all be worth it when he’s here. I can’t complain though because this journey has been smooth sailing for the most part. He’s been so good to me! We can’t wait to meet you Little Man! ? Mamas, what side effects did you feel during your pregnancy? ?: Daddy #3rdtrimester #andababymakes3#psalm37four #babyboy”

What is Sciatica? (SYE-AT-ick-uh)

As the uterus expands, mom to be may feel aches and pains in the back, abdomen, groin area, and thighs. Many women also have backaches and aching near the pelvic bone due the pressure of the baby’s head, increased weight, and loosening joints. Some pregnant women complain of pain that runs from the lower back, down the back of one leg, to the knee or foot.

It is thought to occur when the uterus puts pressure on the sciatic nerve

The sciatic nerve transmits sensation from the lower extremities and lumbar area of the low back. It is common for people to recover from sciatica without a surgical operation.

How to cure it?

Home remedies for new sciatica include heat-pad or ice-pack applications. Each can be applied for approximately 20 minutes every couple of hours. Some benefit from alternating heat and ice applications.

Strict bed rest is recommended less often than in the past. Physical therapists are experts at designing optimal exercise programs for sciatica. Brief walking can be helpful for certain people with sciatica.

Sparks and her new husband Dana Isaiah are expedient their first child, a baby boy, later this year.

The 20+ Comfort Foods You Crave When You’re Preggers

When you’re pregnant, you get so much advice about what to eat, how to exercise and what to do to stay healthy, but sometimes, you just want to vege and chill out and engage in some good old comfort foods. You’re back is achy, your ankles are swollen, your face has broken out, you have heartburn and your sciatica is acting up and you might just want to forget it all and indulge in some comfort treats.

1. Ice

Pregnant women love to chew on ice. Seems strange, since it’s not really a food and doesn’t seem in any way satisfying to those of us not with child, but for some reason pregnant women just can’t get enough. Those with anemia are more likely to be seen chewing on ice, since it can relieve inflammation of the mouth and tongue (a common symptom of anemia).

2. Chocolate

Chocolate — or any sweet, for that matter — is something pregnant women can’t get enough of. This could be because chocolate makes you happy, and since there’s no drinking for pregnant women, chocolate is literally the next best thing. An old wives’ tale states that if you crave sweets, it means you’re carrying a girl.

Tip: If you’re worried about indulging too much, satisfy your chocolate craving by drizzling low-fat chocolate syrup onto fresh fruit.

3. Spicy foods

Spicy foods, such as curry or hot red peppers, are yet another common craving among pregnant women. Interestingly enough, it’s because hot foods make the body sweat, which cools off the body. If you’re currently expecting, then you know it’s almost impossible to stay cool. Try adding some spice to your next meal to see if it helps cool you down.

4. Pickles

Women who crave pickles could be low in sodium, but there’s no real proof of this. Some like the crunch, some like the vinegar, and some like the refreshing taste. Whatever it is, pickle cravings are nothing to be too concerned about. They’re low in calories, easy to get and inexpensive.

5. Potato chips

Potato chips, like pickles, are loaded with salt. Again, you could be low in sodium, but more than likely you’re just desiring something salty and crunchy, and potato chips are what comes to mind. Since they’re high in fat and calories, try reaching for these alternatives instead.

6. Fruit

Pregnant women don’t crave just junk food (surprisingly!) — they crave fruit as well. You (and your body) want a healthy baby, so sometimes it needs extra-healthy foods to make sure that happens. Fruits, such as watermelons and grapes, are cool and refreshing, all while providing your body and baby with a boost of vitamin C.

7. Lemon

It’s not unheard of to see a pregnant woman eating a straight lemon or adding a ton of it to their water. Pregnant women crave sour foods. The reason? Your taste buds change, and typically you like to “shock” them with super-sour or super-spicy foods.

8. Ice cream

Ice cream is sweet, it cools you off, and it’s rich and creamy. With so many flavors to choose from, a pregnant woman could literally spend hours in the ice cream aisle. For a healthier version, buy low-fat vanilla frozen yogurt, and top with fresh fruit. You might kill two cravings in one sitting.

7 Tips for Making Cooking With The Kids A Breeze

Children are typically very picky eaters by nature. But what if you let a child become part of the cooking process? When children help prepare a meal they are more likely to eat that meal than if they had not helped cook it! So, what have you got to lose? You will get some assistance in the kitchen, your children will gain a few cooking skills, and you all will prepare a delicious meal for your family that everyone will eat. Here are some ideas to help guide you through the cooking process with children.

Planning the meal – Sit down as a family and have your kids help plan the menu. It’s best to have a few choices available to them to choose from, and the meals should be both healthy and well balanced. Have them create a grocery list for the meal and, if possible, include them on your shopping trip to the grocery store. Allowing children to plan a meal for the family creates a sense of helpfulness and selflessness in them. Plan your meal for an evening that isn’t packed full of activities or rushed, because kids tend to take longer to cook a meal since they are just learning.

Wash your hands and produce – Always start any meal prep by washing your hands (adults too!) and any produce that you’ll be using to cook your meal.

Read the recipe – Read the recipe together and make a plan on how you’re going to tackle all of the prep work and actual cooking of the meal. Kids who can read enjoy being in charge of reading the recipe and informing everyone what steps are next.

Get to work – Depending on the age of your children, you may have to assign tasks to them if they are younger, or you can let them decide who is going to do what if you have older children. Make sure that all of the tasks are age appropriate, but at the same time are tasks that will captivate your child and engage them in the cooking process. Young children can help chop soft vegetables with plastic knives; older children can help open and drain cans, measure out ingredients, and use sharper knives to help chop; and your oldest children can help cook at the stove and remove things from the oven.

Safety – Always supervise children who are cooking in the kitchen. Teach them about stove and oven safety, including when they are not allowed to use it. Instruct them on the correct way to use a knife, a peeler, a grater, and other sharp objects. By teaching children the correct and safe ways to use items in the kitchen you can avoid cuts and burns and create a safe cooking environment.

Work surfaces – Provide a safe and stable work surface for your child to prepare food on. If your child can’t reach the counter consider using a stool to give them some height or having them prepare food at the table rather than the counter.

Use prep bowls – Instead of having children crack eggs or throw chopped vegetables directly into what you are cooking, have them put their prepped food into individual food prep bowls. That way, if they throw a scrap into the food or crack a shell into the eggs it’s easy to fish out, rather than attempting to find it in the big dish. It may create more dishes in the end, but it will also allow you to make sure only food ends up in the completed dish

Make it a learning experience – What better way to practice those math skills than with measuring and adding? Measuring cups can teach fractions, doubling recipes can encourage addition and multiplication, timers help children recognize time, and reading recipes encourage children to follow steps in order! Cooking with children can be a highly rewarding experience for everyone when it’s done correctly. It’s important that you are patient with your children as they learn to cook. There will be eggshells in the eggs, flour on the floor, and vegetable peels all over the counter, but the sense of accomplishment from your children will be worth the mess!

Study: Moms Work is Two and Half Jobs

Taking care of children really is a full-time job; in fact, it’s two and a half, according to research which has found that the time mothers spend on parent-related tasks is equal to a 98-hour work week.

The US survey of 2,000 mothers of children aged five to 12 reveals that the average mother will “clock-in” at 6.23am and continue to conduct motherly duties until 8.31pm on a normal day.

This amount of time breaks down to mothers working a 14-hour shift seven days a week, extending far beyond the hours of any ‘normal’ job.

The research into the numerous pressures faced by mothers was commissioned by American juice brand Welch’s and also found that the average mother manages to save just an hour and seven minutes for herself every day. The study also revealed that 40% of mothers feel their life is dominated by a never-ending to-do list.

“The results of the survey highlight just how demanding the role of mother can be and the non-stop barrage of tasks it consists of,” said Casey Lewis, the lead of health and nutrition at Welch’s. “Busy mums may identify with the list of ‘lifesavers’, which highlights not just a rigorous workload but a constant requirement to feed and fuel the family, week in and week out.”

Kenya Moore Reveals She’s Pregnant, Due End of Year

Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kenya Moore is expecting at the end of the year, according to sources of blogger LoveBScott who are familiar with the  show’s Reunion special taping held this past Thursday.

The former Miss USA revealed the news during the session.  Many hypothesize that the pregnancy news saves Moore from getting axed from the show because she has a renewed story line.

Also, she shared that her husband, restauranteur Marc Daly, has finally agreed to film for the show, she revealed during the reunion taping. Previously, he had been reluctant making it difficult for the production to include Moore. She spent a lot of last season in New York City, where her husband is based and only filmed with the other housewives periodically.

When Moore was asked about plans to grow a family with her new hubby during an episode of Watch What Happens Next After Show, Moore replied, “I hope so. You know, listen, we have been really up front about wanting to expand our family, and we have definitely been taking the proper steps to try to make that happen.”

The couple celebrated her 47th birthday with a trip to Egypt this past January. Congrats!

Why Gail Simmons Is Not a Fan of ‘The Birth Plan’

Well, we agree that birth plans rarely go according to plan, but she said it!

Gail Simmons, who is a judge on Bravo TV‘s Top Chef and is expecting her second child with her music executive husband Jeremy Abrams, joked during  in an interview with HATCHland“I call BS on the birth plan.”

Simmons, who also was head critic on Top Chef Duels and host of Top Chef: Just Desserts, B, told the blog for the maternity label that chronicles motherhood before, during and after pregnancy. she’s trying to relax and let nature take its course.

“That shouldn’t scare anyone, nor is it a bad thing, it’s just one of the few times in life you can’t control,” she said. “My goal is to have a healthy baby and to get to the hospital on time. That’s my plan. My plan is to not

It will be a balance and the working family will play it by ear. The couple are parents to 4-year old

“Once the baby comes, I’ll see how it goes … you never know what kind of birth you’re going to have or what kind of baby you’re going to have. My plan right now is to take off the summer to be with my family and aim to go back to work as soon as I feel mentally and physically able.”

Now, that’s a good plan!
