Hurricane Harvey: 11 Credible On-The-Ground Charities to Donate To

courtesy Direct Relief

Looking for ways to help the Hurricane Harvey victims in Houston, Texas but wary of news accounts that some of the large charities funnel donations to pay salaries, travel, and overhead expenses, and so you don’t know who to give to?

Join the Club.

I don’t want to malign any organization that actually does a lot of good (read about one here) but there is a taint in the giving world.  People who want to donate and help out victims also must feel confident that their funds are actually helping people, directly.

It is such a concern that organizations are releasing statements about their commitment to use donations properly.  The Texas Organizing Project Education Fund posted a notice clarifying that its Harvey Community Relief Fund would be used for victims of the storm: “We want to be clear on a key point about the Harvey Community Relief Fund, which is being housed within the Texas Organizing Project Education Fund: We have an ironclad commitment that 100 percent of the money raised into this fund will be spent directly on ensuring low income and people of color are not forgotten in the relief, recovery and reconstruction efforts. Not a dime will be spent on any other purpose.”

The organization recognized and learned from how past storm relief aid was mishandled

“One year after Hurricane Ike, low-income neighborhoods remained dotted with blue tarps and damaged homes without hope for assistance to rebuild,” the organization’s press release reads. “The money was on its way elsewhere. After the Tax Day Flood of 2016, people in Houston’s Greenspoint neighborhood were being forced by their landlords to pay rent on apartments that were uninhabitable.”

Before hitting that Donate Button, consider first checking out websites like Charity Navigator,  Charity Watch and the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving website that rate charities before giving.

I did some leg work and assembled a list of organizations and groups that are raising funds for on-the-ground help and support to consider giving to:

1. The Food Bank of Corpus Christi can provide 7 meals to displaced Harvey victims for just $1.

2. The Texas State Bar is organizing attorney from the state and all over the country that can help victims apply for FEMA aid, replacing lost documents, or fielding insurance claims questions, landlord-tenant issues, home repair contracts, etc. Sign up HERE! (I did because although I’m not a practicing attorney, I think I am a whiz at landlord and tenant law.)

3. The Texas Organizing Project Education Fund is collecting donations for its Harvey Community Relief Fund that will go where needed most though the organization is still ascertaining how to best channel donations, but it could go to personal hygiene items to legal aid and advocacy.

4. Kimberly Reed of NextGen Storm Leads in Denver Colorado hosting a supplies drive on September 8 and is trying to get contractors from across the US to volunteer to come help people rebuild. Find her on her Facebook Page HERE. She is not collecting CASH.

5. Direct Relief is top rated and is providing on-the-ground assistance as well. The organization has committed $200,000 to help storm victims and made $100 million in medical supplies available. The nonprofit dispatches crates (see above photo in header) which contain critical medicines and supplies, are currently with health clinics being impacted by Hurricane Harvey

6. The Catholic Charity of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is collecting supplies to distribute to families and stock at the various parishes that are open and providing shelter, food and supplies. You can also donate cash. As a Catholic and someone familiar with the work of Catholic Charity, I can attest that most of the funds are spent where it matters.

7. Team Rubicon organizes military vets and reserve men and women and sends them to assist first responders to deploy emergency response teams.

8. The Houston Humane Society is help the four-legged victims, and provide them with the shelter and care they need while their owners recover. It has created its own Harvey Donation Fund you can contribute to.

9. Texas Diaper Bank – Texas Diaper Bank is putting together disaster relief kits for families with young children. You can donate here.

10. Americares says that for every $10 donated, it can provide $200 in Aid in the form of water distribution, aid and mobilizing medical outreach with its local partners.

11.Southwest Airlines Southwest is collecting Rapid Rewards points to donate to partner organizations to get relief workers, assistance to first responders and search and rescue teams that are directly involved with disaster relief in areas affected by Harvey. The points donations enable relief workers and volunteers to travel to areas in need. Click here to donate frequent flyer points to Harvey relief efforts.

I’m adding to this post as I come across others doing on-the-ground relief efforts:

Parents are Accidentally Feeding Their Children Dog Biscuits But There is a Reason Why

A mom in Australia accidentally packed Scooby Snacks  dog food biscuits in her children’s lunch boxes thinking they were human snacks. After discovering her error, Sydney mom Tania Toomey took to Facebook to warn other parents.

In a Facebook post warning,   said she purchased a packet of Scooby Snacks choc-friendly carob biscuits from her local supermarket, not realizing it was dog food, although the packaging does say “pet food only”, it was colorfully designed to attract children and was also located in the aisle at the grocery store with other snacks for humans.

“I bought these from the biscuit isle next to the Tiny Teddies at Woolies in North Strathfield,” she wrote. “Terrible and disgraceful, not to mention dangerous!”

Her kids came home from school  and told her “yuck, they are disgusting!”

“BE CAREFUL the store is very disorganized and very little healthy option snacks for children in a family area,” Ms Toomey wrote in her Facebook complaint.

The Woolworths  denied that Scooby Snacks are stocked in the confectionery aisle of their supermarkets, Yahoo! reports.

This is not the first time either this has happened. Back in June, some New Zealand parents complained about accidentally buying the snacks for their kids.  In a report about that incidents, some also said the snacks look like the Tiny Teddies snacks sold in that country.

Stereotype Busters: Black Men Across America Are Cheering On Students on the First Day of School

There is a new very positive tradition that is taking over the nation where men, black men in particular, gather at schools to greet, high five and dap students as they enter the school for the first day of school.

It started with a member of the organization 100 Black Men organizing one in his city, which got lots of media attention. The idea caught on and since then, it has spread o other cities. Hartford, Connecticut; Boston, MassachusettsSeattle, Washington; Texas, Dayton, Ohio, New York, City and other cities have taken on the trend and organized similar First Day of School greetings.

In Texas at Kelly Elementary School, “9 out of 10 students are raised by a female family member and may not have a male role model,” Principal Alaina Criner said of the event where men came to her school this year.

“Just so they have someone to look up to,” Criner told KTNTV about the effects of the men’s presence.  “Someone that maybe looks like them, or someone else in their life as a role model.”

Attorney DeVaughn Ward organized one at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary a few years back and had this to say to Yahoo! Parenting:

“In this school they may not typically see career professionals on a regular basis. So we wanted them to see people who look like them out there supporting them. Seeing someone in a suit and tie would hopefully encourage them and give them the idea that ‘maybe someday I can do that too.’”

In Seattle, Washington, Seattle University Law Professor Bryan Adamson wore his academic robe and hat and explained the importance of showing up for dispelling myths and stereotypes about black men, and showing this demographic in a positive light.

“(Students) remember, and they model,” Adamson said. “They see these images of what they could become, whether they look like us or not, and go into their communities. They are the ones changing the narrative.”

In Maryland, schools are not open until after labor day so Maryland Delegate Angela Angel is using her nonprofit charity, Advocate Angel, to enlist men to help welcome students in Prince George’s County, Maryland. She is calling the county-wide event, “Dap Day,” named for the friendly fist or fist greeting.

There are shifts of 7-8am, 8-9am, and 9-10am, Angel told local radio this morning. They can find out more information and sign up here.

Was Mel B’s ‘You Will Never Own Me’ VMA Dress Addressing Ex or Simon Cowell?

Mel B wore a personally designed dress with a bold message on it to the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday: a sequinned dress with the words “You Will Never Own Me” hand-stitched along the front, according to US Weekly magazine.

“The former Spice Girl arrived at the award show in a sparkly gold body con dress from Discount Universe with spaghetti straps, a V-neckline, and the words “You Will Never Own Me” written in rainbow hues down the front,” Emily Patrick, writing for the site wrote. “She ditched all accessories, letting her statement shift shine, pairing it with bright red pumps, minimal makeup, and her asymmetrical haircut swept over to one side.”

There is speculation as to who that message is addressing.

She is embroiled in a contentious divorce and custody battle with her ex-husband Stephen Belafonte.

A court ordered the America’s Got Talent judge to pay her estranged husband Stephen Belafonte $40,000 per month in temporary spousal support as well as $140,000 in attorney fees and forensic fees on Belafonte’s behalf. The two share a 5-year old daughter Madison.

But others have speculated that the message was addressed to co-judge on AGT, Simon Cowell, who took a jab at her failed marriage during a broadcast last week.

After an embarrassing technical malfunction on a magician contestant’s performance, Cowell quipped: “I kind of imagine this would be like Mel B’s wedding night. A lot of anticipation, not much promise or delivery.”

Afterwards, Brown jumped out of her seat, poured her glass of water onto Cowell’s lap and stormed off stage during the live taping.  throwing a glass of water at him, Brown stormed out of the studio despite it being a live taping.

At a red carpet event after that taping, Mel B said of the incident, “He should know that if he says something inappropriate,he is going to get stuff thrown at him.”

She was also already emotional from watching another contestant’s touching performance and hearing a personal backstory.

“[Evie Clair] really made me cry because it made me think about my dad, and my dad recently passed away from cancer also, with an almost eight to nine years struggle. So a story like that from such a young girl really touches my heart,” Mel B told E! News  “She just sounded so beautiful and I couldn’t stop crying, so I go from that to Simon saying something so rude and inappropriate.”

Students Forgive Principal For Telling Them They ‘Look Fat’ in Leggings Unless They’re A Size 0 or 2

A South Carolina high school principal was blasted last week for telling 9th and 10th grade girls during an assembly that they “look fat” wearing leggings unless they are a size 0 or 2, reported NBC-affiliate WCBD  last Thursday.

The local news channel obtained an audio recording of Principal Heather Taylor of Stratford High School in Goose Creek, South Carolina discussing the school’s uniform policy.

“I’ve told you this before, I’m going to tell you this now, unless you are a size zero or two and you wear something like that, even though you’re not fat, you look fat,” Taylor said on the recording. “It is not meant to be your actual pants, and if you have a shirt that comes to here, then you are showing everything. Yes, everything.”

According to a Twitter user who looks to be a student at the school, Taylor told the Freshman class, “that if you are not a size 0 or size 2 you look like a bunch of sausages.”

The Stratford High School dress code does in  fact restricts leggings: “leggings, tights, yoga pants and spandex must be worn under clothing that covers to mid-thigh.”

However, the restriction shouldn’t be served up on a big garbage pail platter of body shaming!

As could be expected, Taylor’s comments about leggings sparked backlash, with students and parents speaking to local media outlets, and it looked from their comments that she was initially hostile about being called to the carpet for her remarks.

“Body shaming teenage girls is uncalled for, inappropriate and unprofessional. When I spoke with her [Principal Heather Taylor], she talked around the issue, and made excuse after excuse, effectively calling all of the students liars,” Lacy Thompson-Harper, mom of an 11th-grade student, wrote on Facebook, per IB Times reporting. “This has upset many, many more students than just those in the 10th grade. My daughter is in the 11th grade, and is livid. She has been ridiculed by students for her body, and shouldn’t be subjected to it from teachers.”…

Social media users accused Taylor of calling the girls a liar and asking parents to contact her directly to discuss any concerns but later released a very weak statement apologizing for the incident.

“I met with each class of the Stratford High School student body. I addressed a comment made during a 10th grade assembly and shared from my heart that my intention was not to hurt or offend any of my students in any way,” she said. “I assured them all that I am one of their biggest fans and invested in their success. After speaking with our students and receiving their support, I am confident that, together, we are ready to move forward and have a wonderful year.”

She is still employed as the principal. Some kids forgave her through a formal statement of their own posted on the school’s website so no, she won’t be fired, as some have called for, and will survive another day to judge students quietly in her head who are larger than a size two.

P!nk and Logic Gave the Most Impactful Speeches at the MTV VMAs WATCH!

As usual during Awards shows, artists use their time and platform to espouse messages to their audience. Last night’s MTV VMAs is no stranger to being used as a conduit to deliver news.

Last night, P!nk and hip hop artist Logic, in our opinion delivered the two of the most impactful remarks.

P!nk while accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award spoke of her 5-year old daughter who needed a self-esteem boost recently.

“If I may tell you a quick story,” Pink began her acceptance speech relaying a recent exchange with her daughter.

“‘Momma, I’m the ugliest girl I know,'” Pink said her daughter told her one day. “I said, huh? She was like, ‘I look like a boy with long hair.’ My brain went to, oh my God you’re six, where is this coming from?” Pink said.

“I didn’t say anything. Instead I went home and made a PowerPoint presentation for her. In that presentation were androgynous rockstars and artists that live their truth and are probably made fun of everyday of their life and carry on and wave their flag and inspire the rest of us,” she said before naming famous androgynous musicians like Annie Lennox, Prince, George Michael, Elton John, and Michael Jackson.

She then ended her tale with a powerful statement. “We don’t change—we take the gravel in the shell and make a pearl,” she said. “We help other people to change to see more kinds of beauty. Thank you for being your true selves and lighting the way for us,” she wrapped up before giving props to other celebs in the audience.

“You my darling girl are beautiful and I love you,” she said to her daughter, who was in the crowd.

This speech also explains why she and her family were dressed in oversized pin stripe suits, a hat tip to androgyny.  Kudos to her for being so present and responsive.

Also, new artist Logic sang his hit song “1-800-273-8255“, which is the national Suicide Prevention Hotline number, and was joined on stage towards the end by a few dozen people of all races, persuasion, and background who have attempted suicide in the past.

The front of their shirts had the number and the back read, “you are not alone.” It was powerful because you could see yourself represented among those people and that sends a powerful message that suicide impacts everyone.

We also found Logic’s plea for acceptance and tolerance much needed, especially in today’s heated political climate.

“I just want to take a moment right now and thank you all so much for giving me a platform to talk about something that mainstream media doesn’t want to talk about,” he said. “Mental health, anxiety, suicide, depression and so much more that I talk about on this album. From racism, discrimination, sexism, domestic violence, sexual assault and so much more.”

The hip hop artist called his fans to take action on achieving equality.

“I don’t give a (expletive) if you’re black, white or any color in between. I don’t care if you’re Christian, you’re Muslim, you’re gay, you’re straight — I’m gonna fight for your equality because I believe that we are all born equal, but we are not treated equal and that is why we must fight. We must fight for the equality of every man, woman and child regardless of race, religion, color, creed and sexual orientation.”

Moving to Singapore? It Just Enacted Laws Protecting Pets

Animals don’t have the same rights as they do in the US and other Western nations but the tide is turning. And if you are an animal lover who perhaps chose to travel to nations that protect animals, then you’d be happy to know that even in Asian nations, some of which have been the target of protests by Americans for their dog-eating festivals, pets are getting more rights.

If your plan is to visit or move somewhere like Singapore, for example, know that a reliable immigration agent Visa Express Singapore is on hand to help any person going to Singapore and provided the following updates on what a recent law about pet rights state:

Who it Affects

The new law affects people who own animals or pets, and also businesses that deal with all kinds of animals. As per the law before, these groups were barred from mistreating their animals in crude ways like abandoning, kicking or beating them.

However, this new law goes further and requires the mentioned groups of people to provide more care to their animals. When your animal like or pet goes missing, it is the duty of the owner to look for it. The bill also clearly indicates that animals must get adequate shelter, food, and water. Further, the animals must get adequate medical attention when it falls ill.

Effect to Animal-Related Businesses

The new law requires that all staff who will handle animals in these institutions need to have relevant training. The new law created a provision to come up with the relevant training required at a later date.

Consequently, the country had previously collaborated with various bodies like Employment and Employability Institute (E2I) and Singapore Workforce Development Agency (SWDA) to come up with a standardized training for animal handlers. They were also working towards getting a higher number of trainers on matters of animal welfare.

Penalties for the Defaulters of the Law

The new law is considered to be stricter than ever. Therefore, any person who is convicted and found guilty of neglecting animals is liable to pay a fine of $20,000 or/and be jailed for two years.

Furthermore, those who are used to being cruel to animals risk paying $30,000 and/or a 3-year jail term. This is a three-fold increment from the previous punishments outlined by the previous laws.

What is more is that businesses that deal with animals will pay up to $100,000 and/or 3 years in prison once there is proof that they have defaulted the law.

Lastly, such businesses without properly trained staff can part with $5,000 fine and/or 6 months behind bars.

The Impact on Enforcement

The law mandates the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) to have more power to enforce the law through directives to the owners. They are also required to collect evidence through technological means like video, audio, and photographs of those who do not comply with the law. Upon proof that the owners have defied the directives given in writing by AVA, they face either a $10,000 or $20,000 fine, respectively. Each can also get a one-year jail term instead of the fine, or get both.

The 2017 MTV VMA Red Carpet, Celeb Mama Edition

It has been a minute since I did a red carpet review! Thank goodness for tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) at The Forum in Inglewood, California for breaking the drought.

Eudoxie Agnan and hubby Ludacris (real name Chris Bridges) are crusing through their honeymoon stage of their marriage and she is looking hawt on his arms on red carpets always. I did notice that she always wears black and never deviates but each time, she wears dresses with nice cuts that hug her curvaceous figure. I love the simplicity of the t-neck on this dress.

Heidi Klum always dresses like a pageant queen to me and tonight, she looked went with one of those trending lace see through dresses with a peekaboo cleavage, also a hot trend. I don’t like the color of that dress on her as I feel it washes her out and is too neutral and I don’t think it flatters her shape.

I do love the dress, however. It is by Dundass. She accented it with Lorraine Schwartz jewels and some hot strappy  metallic gold colored Giuseppe Zanotti heels.

Pink (real name Alecia Beth Moore Hart) is being honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award tonight and to celebrate, she brought 3/4ths of her family along including husband, former motorcross professional Cary Hart and 5-year old daughter Willow. Eight month-old baby Jameson, her second child, is probably home with nana. They wore matching pen stripe man cut suits! Yup! Even little Willow! It was cute!

I’m not sure if Mel B was sending a message to her estranged soon-to-be ex husband with a colorful glittery pencil length dress that reads “You Will Never Own Me” or paying homage to Lesley Gore‘s 1967 song “You Don’t Own Me” or Grace’s hit cover, but it was eye catching and I loved it.

She wore her hair in a sandy brown blunt messy half bob and red pumps. She and Klum arrived at the show together, according to her Instagram feed.

Amber Rose threw everyone for a loop by ditching her signature blonde buzz cut for wavy auburn brown side swept hair. She wore a figure hugging sheer see-through gown. I was not feeling the deep burgundy lip but if she was going for sexy goth then it works!
