Tips for Raising Great Teens Without Piling On Pressure

img_4379

As a parent, the desire to see your children succeed is a natural one. There is a difference, however, between encouraging your kids to do their best and placing them under so much pressure that they resort to desperate measures in order to achieve success. Striking that balance can be challenging, but it’s important to help your kids reach their full potential without browbeating them into submission.

Praise Effort Over Accomplishments

When your children are praised for their efforts towards meeting a goal, they learn that the most important aspect of their accomplishments is the effort they expend to reach them. When your teen realizes his work is the key to success and the praise of his parents, he’s more likely to focus on that aspect than the end result.

Make sure your child knows that what you’re looking for in terms of success is honest, concerted effort to do his very best.

Rather than demanding that he be the valedictorian, the quarterback of the football team and first chair in the student orchestra, help him understand that the foundation of success is hard work and strong effort.

Emphasize Integrity, Not Winning at All Costs

When teenagers feel like they’re under an intense amount of pressure to succeed academically or athletically at all costs, they’re more likely to view cheating as a tool of survival, rather than a morally and ethically bankrupt choice.

Talking about the importance of honest effort and making sure that your teenager knows you value that honesty over an achievement reached through questionable practices can help to put these dilemma into perspective for your teenager.

Avoid Over-Scheduling

Extracurricular activities can be fulfilling and exciting experiences for your teen that help him learn new skills while exploring his interests and talents. When he’s bogged down by a schedule that’s cram-packed with them, however, desperation can begin to set in.

Work with your teen to determine what activities he’d like to maintain and how they can be scheduled so that he doesn’t feel like he’s being spread too thin by a demanding schedule and placed under too much pressure by coaches, teachers and other authority figures.

Remember, you’re not the only person that can place your teenager under pressure to succeed.

Focus On Your Teenagers’ Needs, Not Your Own

If you’re completely dedicated to your teenage son’s football career or your daughter’s cheerleading prowess, it’s wise to ask yourself why these things are so important to you. If the answer is simply that you want to support your child in an activity she excels in and has a talent for, that’s one thing.

Should a bit of deeper examination reveal that you’re inadvertently living vicariously through your teenager’s success, however, you may want to reevaluate things. In these cases, it’s all too common for a teen to continue something he’d much rather abandon because he feels so much pressure from a parent to be the very best.

If you’re reliving your own glory days through your teen, he’s probably under far more pressure than you realize.

Provide Affirmation and Support

When a demanding schedule is something that your teen has chosen for himself and he’s committed to doing everything he can in terms of reaching his goals, the best thing you can do for him is to offer plenty of support and affirmation. Let your teen know that you’re proud of his efforts, but that his value to you doesn’t lie in how much he accomplishes and your love isn’t contingent upon his success.

Allow Teens to Explore Their Interests

You may have dreams of your son being a professional athlete, but his interests may run more towards the arts or academia. To truly support your kids and help them reach their full potential without stressing them out under the burden of your demands for perfection, allow them to explore the things that interest them and make an effort to show your support.

A teenager who knows he’s loved unconditionally and that the support of those he looks up to most isn’t contingent upon him toeing the proverbial line is generally more secure and less anxious than his over-burdened peers.

It’s not easy to set aside the hopes and dreams you have for your child in favor of allowing him to find his own path, but it’s an important part of growing up and asserting his independence. By supporting his efforts and applauding the hard work he does, you’re effectively helping him reach his potential without adding an unmanageable amount of stress to his plate.

Mediocre Rich Kids Will Earn More Than Poor Bright Kids, Education Secretary Admits

Elementary school kids running into school, back view

High achieving smart but poor kids wind up earning significantly less salary as adults than children with mediocre academic abilities who were born to parents that are professionals or managers.

This inequity is apparent even when the workers have the exact same position, work experience and education attainment, UK’s Education Secretary recently admitted.

“Children from high-income backgrounds who show signs of low academic ability at age five are 35 per cent more likely to become high earners than their poorer peers who show early signs of high ability,”  UK Education Secretary Justine Greening said at a conference on social mobility last month.

She added: “Graduates from disadvantaged backgrounds who do make it to the top jobs still earn, on average, over £2,200 a year less than their colleagues who happen to have been born to professional or managerial parents – even when they have the same educational attainment, the same role and the same experience.”

In singer Lorde’s song “Royals”, she sings about “postcode envy” which is a real thing and then there is the “Postcode lottery” which children who go to school in wealthier areas benefit from.

During the conference, Greening blamed the current school funding system for contributing to inequity in opportunity for equal pay.

We have that same “postcode lottery” here in the US. With much of school funding coming from property taxes of the surrounding homes, naturally, schools in areas sign high home values will be better funded than those in poorer parts.

Brits agree that one’s parents’ socioeconomic standing benefits how well a person does in life.

A Social Mobility Commission poll conducted last year found that 45% of Britons believed “where you end up in society is mainly determined by your background and who your parents were”. Just 29% of people bought into the idea that success is based on merit alone.

Unlike our Education secretary in America who only has experience attending and sending her own children to private school’s, UK’s Greenfield went to public schools, called a comprehensive school in England. Also, she was the first in her family to go to university so she can relate.

“I’m not someone who ever planned to go into politics,” she said. “Far from it. Actually, some of my earliest memories of politicians are of my father shouting at politicians who turned up on the news, frustrated that he felt they didn’t really talk about his life.”

TV Chef Gordon Ramsay’s Kids Won’t Get His $140M Fortune, He Said

gordon-ramsay

Gordon Ramsay won’t be the first multi-millionaire to announce plans to not leave his children his wealth.

Bill Gates and Simon Cowell have chosen not to leave their wealth to their offsprings too. Speaking with the Telegraph, Ramsay, who is worth an estimated $140 million, said that leaving his kids all that money would “ruin them.”

So for now, the foul mouth restaurateur, chef and host of Hell’s Kitchen wants 15-year old Matilda, 17-year old  Jack and Holly, and 18-year old Megan to make it on their own.

“It’s definitely not going to them, and that’s not in a mean way; it’s to not spoil them,” the host of Hotel Hell and Kitchen Nightmare said. “The only thing I’ve agreed with Tana is that they get a 25 percent deposit on a flat, but not the whole flat.”

ramsay

The Master Chef and Master Chef, Junior creator added: “I’ve never been really turned on about the money. That’s not my number one objective and that’s reflected in the way the kids are brought up.”

They should be used to slumming it a little bit. He also told the paper that he doesn’t even let them sit in first class on flights with himself and his wife (the kids’ mom) Tana.

They “haven’t worked hard enough” to afford it yet, he says..

In true Ramsay style, he is quoted in the paper saying,  “I turn left with Tana and they turn right and I say to the chief stewardess, ‘Make sure those little f–kers don’t come anywhere near us, I want to sleep on this plane.’ I worked my f–king ass off to sit that close to the pilot and you appreciate it more when you’ve grafted for it.”

Nation Siblings Day; Survey Says that Sibling Rivalry Thing’s A Myth

life-862967_640

Today is National Siblings Day!

It’s a day to celebrate your brother and sister by posting a photo of yourself and/or with your siblings with the hashtag, #NationalSiblingsDay to post on social media.

children-652270_1280

The day was started by native New Yorker, Claudia Evart in 1995 to honor and celebrate siblings.  After losing her two siblings early in life in separate accidents, she knew how important siblings could be in our lives.

Claudia created the Siblings Day Foundation (SDF), a tax-exempt organization, whose goals included the establishment of National Siblings Day.  Claudia selected April 10 in honor of her late sister, Lisette’s birthday.

children-509903_1280

The folks at NationalToday.com learned from a recent survey that the concept of sibling-rivalry is a myth.

Only 3% of Americans hate their siblings while 92% of the 1,000 Americans surveyed said they do not fight with their siblings. Only 8% of Americans report having physically fought with their siblings.

brother-314113_1280

Few siblings carry long-term grudges against each other. Only 3% of male subjects surveyed still hold a grudge over a childhood fight, while females are half as forgiving: 6% still feel a bit bitter.

Some people have best friends in their siblings. One in 10 American siblings are best friends. About 8% of Americans talk to their siblings every day, while another 8% say their siblings know them better than anyone else.

children-1527930_1280

If given a choice, more Americans (36%) would chose to be an older sibling  versus being an only child (15%), while  1 in 3 would enjoy being the youngest.

Parenting Goals: Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s Toddler Loves Louis Armstrong; Ella Fitzgerald

)

)

During a recent interview at CinemaCon in Las Vegas to talk about her latest projects, including a sequel to Bad Moms, Mila Kunis dished a bit about life as mom to two kids. She told E! News that her and hubby Ashton Kutcher‘s 2-year old daughter Wyatt loves her baby brother Dmitri.

“She loves her brother,” Mila gushed to E! News exclusively. “She wants him to sleep in her room and doesn’t get jealous or envious. She’s great. We got very lucky.”

While explaining that she can no longer handle too many drinks and that date nights have to end pretty early because they got babies, she also talked a bit about how busy Christmas is. The sequel to her last super hit show will be Bad Moms Christmas and will be released during the holidays.

It was most interesting to hear her say that she and hubby only gifted her daughter one gift, a plastic trumpet. First, she says because they know the family will spoil the children with toys so there is no need for the parents to pile on! Whoa! We totally agree with this one.

But second, and most interesting, is because her toddler loves jazz greats! What?

“She loves Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong so she always pretends to play the trumpet so we got her a little plastic trumpet,” she revealed. “That was her Christmas gift from us. The grandparents got her hundreds of gifts, hundreds, so that’s it.”

So great to learn she is exposing her child to non-pop music but also awesome that her daughter is actually developing a love and appreciation for them. Very cool! More reasons to love this couple!

We were already digging on them for getting simple wedding bands from Etsy  (supporting work-at-home mom artisans) and for Ashton’s groundbreaking work for child trafficking awareness, but also deciding to limit their children’s exposure to the public and letting them decide when they are old enough if they want to be public figures!

Oh yeah, and Wyatt speaks three languages already.

“She’s learning Russian,” Kutcher told  Late Night with Seth Meyers,  explaining that Mila’s family speaks Russian, so she gets plenty of exposure. “She has English down. She can like speak and understand English. She can speak and understand Spanish. And she can understand Russian, but she can’t really speak it yet.”

Yay, parents!

Study: No Allergies or Obesity for Babies Born to Homes with Dogs

dog-1718242_1280

A new study finds that babies born into homes that have pets, especially dogs, are less likely to have allergies or suffer from obesity.

Children born into a house with pets are more likely to be immune to certain allergies and less likely to be obese, a new study finds.

Researchers from the University of Alberta discovered that babies in homes with pets had greater levels of “gut microbes” that prevent allergic disease and obesity. This was especially true in households with dogs, which accounted for 70 percent of the participants.

Gut microbes are identified as “microorganisms or bacteria that live in the digestive tracts of humans and animals,” according to a university release.

But the team warned that the benefits identified for the children in the study occurred when they were exposed to pets during a certain timetable early in their lives.

“There’s definitely a critical window of time when gut immunity and microbes co-develop, and when disruptions to the process result in changes to gut immunity,” says Anita Kozyrskyj, a pediatric epidemiologist at the university and one of the world’s leading researchers on gut microbes, in the news release.

The study examined fecal samples from babies who are part of the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development study, which is comprised of 3,500 children born after 2010. The study monitors the children to help figure out the various genetic and environmental influences that may lead to allergies and asthma.

Prior research has found that children in homes with dogs are less likely to be asthmatic because of their exposure to bacteria carried by the pets in their fur or on their paws.

I tried on Most of Victoria Beckham’s Target Collection Released Today

17883827_10154176504976353_516278969222178939_n
Last October, we let you know that our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum and blog fave Victoria Beckham was set to launch her first ever children’s line as a part of a collaboration with big box retailer Target.

Well that time is now, actually today April 9 thru the end of the month April 30 while supplies last, you can get VB x Target clothing for toddlers, kids, and adults.

17757606_10154176504961353_2039209237385388172_n

I headed over to my local Target after a friend texted me a reminder that the clothing was available and being snatched up in Target stores nationwide and I wanted to experience it for myself first hand and get some snaps of the pieces on the shelves and racks.  I was expecting something like the  the carnage that went down when Balmain released a line for H&M.

Beckham is following in the footsteps of other designer brands including Rodarte, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Jason Wu, Missoni, and Peter Pilotto, which have all dreamed up affordable wares for Target over the years. “For a while now, I have been thinking, how great it would be to work on clothes for a customer that either doesn’t want to pay or can’t pay designer prices,” Beckham said in a statement. “So when Target — a company based on accessibility and inclusiveness — proposed a collaboration which combined all of these things, it was an easy decision to make.”

Beckham’s collabo was different because hers will have larger sizes in the store where before they were only available online, and it was cause for criticism in the past, as with the insanely popular Lilly Pulitzer collaboration.

17883748_10154176552686353_405004593902250902_n

In any of event, when I got to my local store, I didn’t see any mad rush but rather a few families checking out the racks. I waited patiently for them to skedaddle along because I wanted to get a good photo of the Sign.

17861920_10154176504876353_5127529402379877695_n

This store had the entire collection for all age groups in one section. I could easily ascertain that the cute grey ribbed jumper sets, the layette collection of bibs and onesies were for babies. The girl toddler selection is absolutely aforable and they looked like the kind of clothes you could imagine Harper Beckham wore when she was that age.

17634806_10154176504881353_7869726349684484443_n

But not so much with the other items in the collection, which comes in signature colors of black, white, grey, orange and brand mascot bunny and bees. The collections include: Circus Scallops, Pressed English flowers, English Lace, Clever Bunny and Pop Floral.

17862627_10154176504866353_4415152486908416089_n

Because the clothing for children mirror the adult version and there were a lot of sheath dresses, I didn’t know which was for kids and which for adults.

17884145_10154176504861353_8829160139062233612_n

I like what I saw, generally.  The quality of the construction  of the clothing, the material’s weight and the look were all top quality. They had a high end aesthetics to them as well. My fave is the see thru raincoat for kids.

17883677_10154176504781353_8390653573043611665_n

17861570_10154176504871353_605223129842211475_n

Also, I loved the paper dolls, coloring book and sticker books.

Because I wanted to see how the clothing would look on an average size and shaped woman who is not a model, I tried on a few pieces.

17799307_10154176504971353_4317323591739302730_n

Again, I couldn’t tell from just looking at the clothing which would fit. They all looked to run large, and I saw a few people on social media complaining about that but when you actually put on the pieces, you realize they aren’t large at all. Just in case, I picked up an item in every size and would you believe, she fit in them all!?! Look:

beckham

Admittedly, I squeezed in this orange. It is a size xs and I could certainly go up two sizes. *snicker*. My fave piece is the  Black Calla Lily Button Down Top. It fit quite comforably and I really dig the Nero type collar.

17861947_10154176503461353_2259931193687703472_n

These pieces are among the other 200 items in the ready to wear line that includes rompers, playful tops and dresses. About designing for kids, Beckham said it was something she has wanted to do for years.

“Designing for children is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, so I was incredibly excited to be able to incorporate childrenswear into this collection,” she said on a blog post on the Target site. “When working on it, I really felt I could tell a story and have fun with it—and I think the clothes reflect just how much fun I had designing them! Being a mother has helped me understand what’s important when it comes to the category. I have had years of learning that function is often just as important as form, and that children need to be able to feel comfortable and free in what they wear. For me it was really all about finding a balance between the fun elements and the real-life functionality of a garment.”

Victoria Beckham for Target ranges in price from $6-$70, with most items under $40, and will be offered in sizes XS-3X for women and NB-XL for girls, toddler and baby. The collection will be available April 9 through April 30, 2017, or while supplies last, at all Target stores and Target.com with  select pieces available for global shoppers via VictoriaBeckham.com. There are a few online exclusives as well.

Before the launch, Beckham shared a commercial for the line which she says is reminiscent of her days as a member of the popular 1990s British girl group, the Spice Girls. In the background to the commercial plays the group’s most famous song, “Spice Up Your Life.”

She also said the inspiration was her daughter.

“I’m reading my life with Harper and what we do as mother and daughter not just with regards to the clothes, but I created some little coloring books and sticker books, and, you know, it’s things that myself and Harper do in England together,” Beckham explained in a promo video. “This is celebrating my relationship with my daughter, and I think it’s great that other women can do exactly the same…. The inspiration behind this campaign was a world of possibilities–make-believe, imagination, and the unexpected.”

Nice!

Guide to Explaining Holy Week to Children

img_4271

This week is Holy Week for Catholics and Christians that are preparing for Easter.

EHow assembled an excellent summary of the week that can be used for helping parents explain the holiday to their children.

It is instructional also for non-Catholics as well who may want to understand or explain the holiday for themselves or their children too.

 Palm Sunday

When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem on his donkey, there were many followers who wanted to see him. People crowded around him and called his name. Many called out “King” or “Savior.”

Worshipers knelt down and waved palm fronds as Jesus passed by. Children and grownups wanted to hear him speak to them. They wanted to touch him. Sick people wanted their Savior to make them well. Another name for this day is Fig Sunday.

Holy Monday and Tuesday

Some people believe that on the Monday of Holy Week, Jesus freed the animals being sold and killed. The freeing of the many sheep and oxen has been compared to the slaves being set free. Tuesday is the day that the Pharisees got together and made a plan to gang up on Jesus and kill him. Holy Monday and Tuesday are not major days for celebration, but the events did lead up to Jesus’ death.

Spy Wednesday

Judas had been Jesus’ good friend, but he got jealous that so many people loved Jesus. Judas got together with the Pharisees and said he would play a trick on Jesus and kill him.

Today, many people go to church on Ash Wednesday to remember this day. A priest will put ashes from burned palm fronds on a person’s forehead in the shape of a cross and say a prayer.

Holy Thursday

The Last Supper was on this day. Jesus sat down to eat with 12 other people. Those people were the disciples. His friend Judas was there that night. Jesus shared his bread and wine with everyone. He told the disciples that it was more important to serve someone else than to be served.

He lovingly washed the feet of his disciples. After the meal was over, Jesus wanted to be alone to pray. Guards appeared a short time later and he was arrested.

Good Friday

Jesus was forced to make a huge cross and drag it up a hill all by himself. He had a crown on his head made of a branch of thorns. He was nailed to the cross by his hands and feet. One of the ways Good Friday is celebrated is by fasting, which means not eating at all. It is a day to mourn the death of Jesus, but also to celebrate that he gave his life for everyone.

Holy Saturday or Black Sabbath

After Jesus died, he was put in a tomb. The tomb was like a cave. The guards rolled a big rock in front of the opening to make sure that no one could get in or out. They knew that Jesus was dead, but they still wanted to close off the opening just to make sure he didn’t get out. Some of the ways to commemorate this day are meditating, praying, and lighting candles in church.

There you have it!!
