Spring Break: 10 Things to Consider for A Family Vacation Rental

girl-911983_1280

When you’re planning an extended family vacation, a rental property is often more economical and more convenient than a long stay in cramped hotel quarters. Selecting the perfect short-term vacation rental, however, is far from a simple process if you’re not sure what you’re looking for. When you’re adequately prepared and have a firm idea of your needs in mind, however, finding the perfect vacation home is far from daunting. Armed with the items detailed on this list, you’ll have a strong vision of what you need from a vacation home and amenities to be on the lookout for as you browse through rental listings.

  1. A Functional Kitchen – One of the primary amenities of a vacation home over a hotel room is the ability to prepare meals at your home away from home, rather than springing for restaurant meals at tourist-destination prices. Make sure that you’re taking the functionality of the kitchen into account when you book your rental; a hotplate and a dorm-sized refrigerator in a garage apartment won’t be worth the money saved on the rental when you’re forced to drop a bundle on three meals out each day.
  2. Smoke and Pet Free Houses – Smoke and pet dander not only leave unpleasant smells that linger for weeks, they can also be triggers for family members that are prone to allergies. Make sure that you’re keeping an eye out for smoke-free, pet-free vacation rentals. Unless, of course, you plan to bring Rover along for the ride.
  3. Ample Sleeping Space – Vacation home owners know that the appeal of a rental over hotel accommodations is that they can reasonably house more people than a hotel room and, as such, can prove to be a more economical choice for large groups. Your teenager will get tired of sleeping on the pull-out sofa in a main area, though, so make sure that there’s enough privacy to go around. And if you don’t feel like lugging along the portable crib, be sure to inquire as to if you can get one on location.
  4. Multiple Bathrooms – Unless you’re traveling as a single family and are accustomed to sharing a restroom, it’s a good idea to look only at listings that include more than one bathroom. Waiting in line for a shared, single restroom is enough to rain on anyone’s parade, and will make for hectic morning ablutions.
  5. Full-Sized Bathtubs – In order to maximize available living space, many vacation rental owners opt to build smaller bathrooms with only a standing shower. This might not be an issue if your kids are older, but bathing a frightened toddler in a standing shower is no one’s idea of a good time.
  6. Dining Space – Those home-cooked meals that are going to save you big bucks aren’t as much fun when half of your group is balancing plates on their knees on the back porch. Make sure that there’s seating for everyone in your group, or you won’t be sharing many family meals while you’re traveling.
  7. Close Proximity to Area Attractions – In an unfamiliar area, the last thing you’ll want to do is navigate a maze of back roads and residential streets to find the beach or the amusement park. A centrally-located, easy-to-find home is your best bet when you’re visiting a new town.
  8. Safety and Security Features – Pools are an attractive amenity for travelers, but can pose a hazard for families with little ones that aren’t yet strong swimmers if the proper safety features aren’t in place. Modern furniture with glass tops and sharp corners also aren’t safe for little ones that aren’t steady on their feet. A place that offers childproofing or at least safety gates can be helpful. Keep an eye on safety while you’re looking for a vacation rental so that your trip isn’t spoiled by a trip to the emergency room.
  9. Laundry Facilities – You won’t want to deal with enough luggage to keep your entire family in clean clothes for the duration of the trip, and you probably won’t like the idea of spending your vacation in a Laundromat much more. Homes with on-site laundry facilities should probably take precedence over those without them.
  10. Access to Childcare Services – One perk that the major resort chains have over small, owner-operated vacation rentals is that those big-box resorts typically have childcare services on-site or a concierge that can direct you to a reputable service. Unless you plan to never have a grown-ups night out, you’ll want to inquire about childcare services and temporary nanny agencies in the area, or line up a local sitter.

Congratulation to Buffalo Bills running back Reggie Bush on expecting a third child with wife Lilit Avagyan. Bush famously dated Kim Kardashian for an extended period of time before marrying a woman some say is a dead ringer for Kim.

Avagyan shared the happy news of the impending birth on her private page which was picked up by some gossip blogs and sites, that added salacious news on top of hers.

The announcement comes around the same time a woman claiming to be Bush’s mistress allegedly gave birth to his child but was cut off from “hush money” once she went public with the alleged news, BET.com reports.

The couple are parents to daughter Brisels, 3, and son Uriah, 1.”They both always wanted a big family,” a source told E! News in 2015.

A source told E! News exclusively that Lilit, 29, is in her second trimester and that the two are looking forward having another baby together. She was photographed with a slight bump while exercising recently.

Zika-infected Pregnant Women 20X More likely To Birth Baby with Birth Defects

pregnant-1245703_1280

Pregnant women infected with the Zika virus are 20 times more likely to have a baby born with certain birth defects as mothers who gave birth before the Zika epidemic began, U.S. health officials reported Thursday.

Even worse, “when you look just at brain abnormalities and microcephaly, what we are seeing is more than 30 times higher than the prevalence before Zika was introduced to the Americas,” said Margaret Honein. She is chief of the birth defects branch at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

With microcephaly, babies are born with a smaller-than-normal head and an underdeveloped brain. Since the mosquito-borne virus first began to spread through South America in April 2015, thousands of babies have been born with Zika-linked microcephaly. The large majority have been born in Brazil, but the consequences of Zika infection during pregnancy are now being seen in the United States.

So Natalie Portman had a 4-day old baby the night of the Oscars which was the real reason the actress missed this year’s February 26th Academy Awards.

A rep for the Black Swan actress told PEOPLE magazine that she and her choreographer husband Benjamin Millepied welcomed their second child together, a daughter they named Amalia Millepied on February 22.

On February 25th, her rep released a statement citing pregnancy for the reason Portman would have missed the Oscars and the Independent Spirit Awards which took place the day before the Oscars

“Due to my pregnancy, I am unable to attend the Independent Spirit Awards and the Academy Awards. I feel so lucky to be honored among my fellow nominees and wish them the most beautiful of weekends,” she said in the statement released by her rep Keleigh Thomas Morgan.

“Mother and baby are happy and healthy,” the rep told the Magazine this weekend about the state of the family.

Israeli-born Portman and Frenchman Millepied are already parents to 5-year old son Aleph. They were married in 2012 in Big Sur, California.

Congrats to the family!

Saint Patrick’s Day: Bar Tricks to Hide You’re Preggers From Friends

alcohol-492871_1280

If you are newly preggers but haven’t leaked the news to colleagues, acquaintances and friends yet because it’s still quite early, hiding it from pals at a Saint Patrick’s Day outing may be tough.

If you can’t come up with an excuse to skip it because up until now you’ve been known in your circles as the group lush, you’re going to have to be creative to hide from those sleuths in your social circle

Over the years, we’ve curated some ideas and suggestions from various women who’ve had to play off their lack of drinking during the critical early months of their pregnancy when they were not yet ready to start telling others.

Here are some things you can do to maybe head off curious looks and questions:

DRESS:  Stick with A-line tops or dresses or empire waist tops to conceal any bump that may have emerged. Whatever you do, just say no to the new crop top trend this round! mmmkay?

drink-654938_1280

DRINKS: Order a coke or other dark drink at the bar away from everyone so no one knows you’re not consuming alcohol.

Your friends may assume there is liquor or alcohol in that glass. Then, the trick is to nurse that ONE drink all night so you get to pass when someone orders another round for the group. You won’t have to do the okie doke twice.

You may not  want to waste good liquor but another option is to  discreetly place  your full glass on the bar away from the group, then find a random a nearby empty glass to pick up.  It may sound a bit deceitful and grimy, but hey, you do what you have to do.

If everyone’s going out for beer, you cannot go wrong with carrying your own bottle of O’Doul’s or some other non-alcoholic beer in an oversized handbag and pouring that in an emptied glass when no one’s looking. It has the same look and consistency of real bear. You would be seen actually drinking a frothy drink.

Kombucha is a fermented black tea drink that can also look like alcoholic ale. You could also use that as a subsitute.

NAUSEA AND VOMITTING:

Fortunately, if you have to hurl in the bathroom, and you’re at a pub, you may have plenty of company among other too inebriated light weights in there doing the same. ha!

No one will suspect it’s you in the toilet hurling or they may think you had one too many! For once, being considered to be the too drunk girl in the room has its benefits.

Have Fun and Good Luck keeping your baby-baking secret concealed!!!

Sarah Silverman Tweets About Forgoing Motherhood; Everyone Has An Opinion On it

silverman

This week, Sarah Silverman was the focus of a lot of water cooler chatter when she opened up in a series of tweets about having to give up motherhood, as a comedienne  in order to advance her career.

On Monday, she defended her choice to not have kids in order to prioritize her career.

“As a comic always working & on the road I have had to decide between motherhood & living my fullest life & I chose the latter,” Silverman tweeted. “Men don’t have to do that. I’d so love to be a fun dad, coming home from the road & being my best fun dad self.”

“So this is just a lil f— all y’all bc u can’t be a woman w/out sacrifice & that’s the fact jack,” the actress added. “And I [heart emoji] my comedian brothers that acknowledge this truth. They’re my family & for a lot of us women comic sisters, our only family.”

Since, then, there have been a few postmortem essays and columns (like here and here) dissecting her words and choice.  I bumped into one column by Heather Wilhelm over at the National Review, a conservative leaning semi-monthly magazine, which had me a little confused.

I think Wilhelm argues that it is Silverman’s position that modern feminism is a lie and falsely convinces women that they can have it all when, the truth is, they cannot.

Wihelm writes:

“It’s a sadness for me because I love kids. I ache for kids,” Silverman told a podcast in 2016, describing her childless state, “but I love my life more. You can’t have it all; you really can’t.” This might come as news to the scores of wildly successful and powerful women with children who have existed throughout history — many of whom, no offense, had far more consequential gigs than comedy — but it’s a feminist doctrine that’s slowly seeping in to the hearts and minds of young women today. “The reaction to my pregnancy was neatly split along demographic lines,” wrote E. J. Dickson in New York magazine last week, in a piece called “Why Did Everyone Act Like I Was Crazy When I Decided to Have a Baby in My 20s?” (As a side note, Dickson is 27, and far closer to 30 — the time when fertility starts to drop off — than 20.) “When I told people over the age of 40 that I was pregnant, they were delighted. People under the age of 40, however, were horrified…

…In other words, it’s a colossal bait-and-switch. Silverman took a lot of online heat for her comments, with people scoffing at her “barren womb,” which frankly isn’t right or fair. The comedian simply echoed years of feminist indoctrination, highlighting the ridiculous package that countless young American women are being sold. “You can’t be a woman w/out sacrifice & that’s the fact jack,” Silverman declared. Correction: You can’t be a good parent, male or female, without sacrifice or hard choices. But in the real world, most good things don’t come for free. Oh, never mind. In most cases, modern feminists don’t believe that line either.”

I’m still confused about the thesis of this piece. Is it a dissection of Feminisim or twisting of Silverman’s words to fit into the proposition. The comments from mainly men are also a little bit off to me. Head over there and have a read and let’s discuss in social what’s up.

Judge Rejects Dad’s $4M Lawsuit Against One Night Stand That Got Pregnant

bedroom-1285156_1280

A Canadian judge rejected a Father’s $4 Million Dollar lawsuit against his child’s mom who he says lied about taking birth control when they hooked up and had unprotected sex in 2014.

The man had previously lost in lower courts before appealing his case. The question presented was: can an alleged “fraudulent misrepresentation” on the part of the mother — whether she was taking birth control as prescribed — render the father’s consent to sex invalid and therefore open up the mother to being sued for sexual battery?”

The judges answered both questions with a resounding “no.”

“It is to be hoped that the appellant will, as the child’s father, contribute to the child’s upbringing in a positive way. It is also hoped that he will see this contribution as being pleasurable and positive,” Rouleau wrote.

“If, however, he views it only in a negative light, I see no basis on which to impose liability on the mother for any net negative impact the appellant may consider that he has suffered due to his having fathered the child and contributed to his or her upbringing.”

The father said he was okay with paying the child support he was paying and he wants to have a relationship with his child and was not tryign to avoid his obligation. The reason for the lawsuit, according to the dad, is so the mother of his child could compensate him nonetheless for the emotional, professional and/or financial impact the birth of the child has had on him.

The judge ruled that if he found against his child’s mom, he would essentially be permitting the dad to “circumvent the equal obligations to the child imposed on the parents by law — obligations that are imposed without regard to fault or intention.”

The father was also ordered to pay the mother $8,000 in costs for the appeal.

The judge also rejected the complainants claim of sexual battery because there was no risk of serious physical injury to the dad when he consented to sex with his child’s mom.

Where to Raise Kids: Maryland Is Most Culturally Diverse; New England Least (REPORT)

todd-heisler-the-new-york-times

Even though the United States is growing increasingly culturally and racially diverse, some parts of the country are more multicultural than others.

When couples start to think about their future, and begin planning their family and determining where to raise their future children, some think about the diversity of the area because they want their children to be exposed to a variety of peoples.

To identify the most culturally diverse places in America, personal finance site WalletHub’s analysts compared 501 of the largest U.S. cities across three key metrics, including ethnoracial diversity, linguistic diversity and birthplace diversity.

The results show that the state of Maryland has the most diverse cities in the entire nation. (Interestingly enough, Maryland also ranked number 5 in terms of best high performing school so there could be something to say about how that diversity actually enriches the education and learning process). Coming in second is the Bay area  with two cities; Oakland and San Jose among the top 10.

The New England area is home to the least culturally diverse cities with three Vermont and one New Hampshire cities in the bottom ten. West Virginia comes a close second with two cities ranking in the bottom. Those cities are over 90% white while Hialeah, Florida boasts a near 100% Hispanic, Spanish-speaking and foreign-born population in all categories.

Most Culturally Diverse Cities Least Culturally Diverse Cities

Ashley Tisdale Becomes the Latest False Celeb Bump Speculation Victim

08421aa9-8f84-42e9-a17b-14efd0058820

In 2009, we did a piece on the celebrity bump watch speculation which is often times fueled by the public’s new found obsession with celeb pregnancy.

The”bump watch” also causes many in the media and public to falsely believe that a usually svelte female star is expecting if she shows up on a red carpet even slightly heavier than usual or if she is spotted by paparazzi with a tiny post-big meal tummy

It has happened to P!nk, Tia Mowry, Lady Gaga and more recently High School Musical alum Ashley Tisdale

A photo of the actress and director on the arrival carpet of Elton John’s annual star-studded Oscar viewing party on Sunday night was released on social media

After various folks commented asking if she was expecting, Tisdale took notice and clapped back on Twitter.

“The pressure to being perfect is a struggle. No im not pregnant, I’m just happy and haven’t been strict on my diet but thanks for the reminder,” she tweeted.

The sleek royal purple dress she wore accented a beautiful and slightly curvy frame.

The 31-year old has been married to husband Christopher French since 2014 and recently said she feels no pressure to become a mom.

“Oh no, no,” Ashley told Access Hollywood. “I’m obviously married. But I don’t feel any pressure. For me and my husband, we just want to be together and travel. And we’re really focused on work right now, so there is no pressure. I’m just really loving life right now.”
