Many of the author’s quotes from his various stories are actually beneficial for adults as well.

Foxy Brown Had a Baby Girl but Stayed Mum Entire Pregnancy

foxy-brown-key-to-brooklyn-640x476

Congratulations to rapper Foxy Brown who gave birth to a baby girl though no one even knew she was pregnant.

This morning on the Wendy Williams Show, the radio host turned talk show host discussed why Foxy turned down her offer to perform one of her most famous tracks on the show: she was pregnant!

“Literally, as I’m putting on my bracelet, the telephone rings,” Williams told her audience today.  “Congratulations to Foxy Brown. She had a baby girl. No word on exactly who the baby’s father is, but allegedly it’s a reggae star and I’m not going to say his name because I think that me and Foxy have some sort of relationship, and the bureau does have a working telephone. So, maybe she’ll call us.”

Brown, who was most famous during the 1990s as one of the very few successful female rappers, suffered some hearing loss and actually was recently hospitalized a few months ago, but seemed to be in good health soon after.

Fox seemingly was negatively mentioned by Remy Ma on the Love and Hip Hop: NY reality TV star’s recent “SHEther” diss track with a reference to a “deaf” and not battling with the “impaired” but Brown took the high road and opted out of snapping back.

She was probably too busy being a mom.

Congrat! Can’t wait to see the new baby!

Tomorrow is National Day of Unplugging which Women Need More, Per Study

img_2931
Tomorrow, March 3rd,  is the National Day of Unplugging and to no surprise a recent national survey found that women, moreo than men, may need a 24-hour break from their devices.

The survey of 1,000 people conducted on February 14, 2017 revealed that 77% of women and 68% of men spend 3 hours or more per day on their computer, phone, or tablet.

Also, half of women and 41% of men spend 5 hours or more per day looking at a screen.

The three most interesting insights the survey discovered:

#1: When I have down time, I spend it on my phone, computer, or tablet (35%)

#2: I spend more time interacting with people online than I do in person (13%)

#3: I feel like I’m addicted to my phone (13%)

Is it any surprise that most Americans spend over three hours a day on their devices?

Shockingly, 75% of those surveyed admitted to this fact, and close to half (48%) said they spend almost 5 hours or more per day.

Then there is the hopelessly addicted: the 13% who say they spend 10 hours or more on a screen! Wow!

And most of the screen time is spent in bed.

The research showed that for 58% of Americans, their bed is the most popular place to check their phone, be it when waking up (32%) or when going to sleep (26%).

Here is how the top 5 broke down:

#1: When I wake up (32%)

#2: When I’m in bed going to sleep (26%)

#3: On work breaks (20%)

#4: In the bathroom (10%)

#5: On my morning commute (4%)

And the devices they’re using while in bed is;

#1: Smartphone (76%)

#2: Computer (17%)

#3: Tablet (7%)

And here is a twist. While it would seem that women care more about “likes” than men, the survey showed that actually men care slightly more

While 5% of women say they closely monitor how many “likes” they get on social media, compared to 7% of men who say the same.

Who knew. We hope you take some time tomorrow to unplug.

How to Celebrate Lent with Kids

In celebrating 13 years of Lent with kids, here’s the things we’ve learned. Maybe they’ll be helpful to you, too.

  1. Be reasonable. You can’t go all drill sergeant on your kids and start making demands of a completely reformed lifestyle during these 40 days. Trust me, I’ve tried. I believe we call that a #parentingfail

40 Lenten Activities for Kids

  1. Make a Prayer Chain: List 40 intentions or people on 40 slips of paper. Link them together into a chain. Rip one off each morning of Lent and pray for that need.
  2. Bury the Hallelujah: Explain why we don’t proclaim hallelujah during Lent. To symbolize, write out hallelujah on paper and bury it in the yard or put it away in a box.

natalie-nunn

Former reality TV star Natalie Nunn celebrated the impending arrival of her first child a baby shower that her husband and friends threw for her at an event hall near their Roseville, Califiornia home.

“Best husband in the world,” Natalie exclaimed. “When your other half can make you a better you … change your life. That’s what I call a power couple,” Nunn said.

The local channel’s morning show covered the event.

When Good Day Roseville host asked the couple how it feels to become first time parents, Nunn replied, “scared!” before Payne chimed in, “A Good Scared!

The former star of the Oxygen channel TV show The Bad Girls Club added, “Everyday, I wake up and I’m like I’m gonna be a mom! But I’m going to be a bad girl mom!”

The mom-to-be explained that the gorgeous bump hugging  fitted fishtail white lace dress she wore at the event was made by a designer she found on Instagram. She also explained during the segment that she used vendors local to her Sacramento and Rossville community.

But her fellow Bad Girl alums, and her husband’s athlete friends flew in from elsewhere to join in the fun and celebration.

The reformed bad girl, who now sells fitness challenges online, also tagged the various companies that worked with her on her social media account including the baker of an exquisite three tiered cake.

“Thank you @UrbanDecay for being a part of my baby shower prize giveaways for my baby shower games,” Natalie tweeted about Lash Dubai “for having the prize winner bags full of lashes for my girls who won pregnant bingo guess my size and price is right!”

Guests played games and enjoyed pink and white princess themed goodies, cupcakes, cake pops and other desserts, mimosas, and a taco bar.

5 Ways to Store Your Daughter’s Hair Accessories

hairpins-262378_1280

If you’re sick of finding rubber hair bands, bows and clips all over the place, or fed up with not being able to find them when you need them, it’s time to straighten out your daughter’s hair accessories. With a little creatively and vision, you can create an attractive way to display all of your daughter’s hair care items and keep them easily accessible.

1.Make your own framed hair bow display. Take the glass out of an old 8 by 10 or larger picture frame and recycle it into a piece of hair care art. Hot glue lengths of ¾ to 1-inch wide ribbon about 1 ½ to 2 inches apart across the longer sides of the back of the frame. To create a ribbon hanger, glue the desired lengths of ribbon to each top corner of the frame and tie the pieces into a bow. Add additional ribbon to the bow to fill it out. Store clips, fancy elastics (pull the elastic behind the ribbon and stick the appliquéd piece through the elastic loop in the front), bobby pins and other accessories on the ribbon and hang headbands over the corners of the frame.

2.Store hair accessories in a shoe organizer placed over the door. Clear over the door plastic shoe organizers are full of clear pockets that are just the right size for holding brushes, elastics, bobby pins and all sorts of hair accessories. If you’d like to keep accessories out of reach, simply trim a few rows of pockets off of the bottom.

3.Use beading storage containers for elastics and bobby pins. For a few dollars you can pick up a plastic container broken down into storage squares that will organize rubber bands, bobby pins, small hair clips and other hair emblements. Place different colored bands in each box so you can easily find multiple hairbands of the same color, leaving you never to have to mismatched pigtail hairbands again.

4.Use a small basket, tin bucket or short, square glass vase if it’s out of reach to hold brushes and spray bottles. A short, stout decorative or clear container can be a great place to store brushes, bottles of water, spray in conditioner, combs and other hair care items. You can store a rainbow of rubber bands over the spray bottles for easy storage.

5.Add long, thick ribbons to a coat hanger to hold barrettes and elastics. Hot glue a few strips of ¾ inch to 1 inch wide ribbon along the sides or bottom of a wooden or plastic coat hanger. Clip barrettes, clips and bobby pins onto the strips. Slide elastic bands over the top of the hanger. You can display this on the wall or over the door handle or hang it in the closet.

With a minimal investment of time and money you can say goodbye to digging through a basket of tangled bows and bands and hello to an organized storage area that will make finding the perfect hair accessory a cinch every time.

MTV is reviving and Casting for ’16 and Pregnant”

img_2902

MTV is now casting a new season of  its thought-provoking documentary series “16 and Pregnant”

The series follows the journeys of young women as they face unexpected pregnancies and navigate the difficulties of becoming parents at a young age.

MTV states its goal is to give viewers a look inside the realities of teen pregnancy — from morning sickness and balancing school responsibilities to navigating incredibly difficult decisions and relationships with boyfriends and/or parents, ultimately to the day of the baby’s arrival and beyond.

The show has been criticized as glorifying teen pregnancy but in actuality, studies we’ve seen show the opposite.

The show reveals  much of the downside of teen pregnancy and therefore acts as a deterrent, some reports state.

A 2014 study suggested a direct link  between the show and a drop in pregnancy rates, in a study conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

It found that the rate of teenage pregnancy declined faster in areas where teenagers were watching more MTV programming. After crunching the numbers, researchers concluded that the shows prevented more than 20,000 births to teen mothers in 2010 alone.

There are still the skeptical that say because the cast members become celebrities in their own right, then it does indeed make teen pregnancy seem more exciting.

In any event, the show answered critics by creating the Teen Mom spinoff to continue to present the challenges.

It stopped airing in 2014 but MTV is back at it!

According to a recent announcement provided to Bellyitch, “MTV is looking for young women from varying backgrounds who are facing an unplanned pregnancy and would like to share their personal story about this life-changing and complicated journey.”

The creators want anyone who would like to share their story “in order to raise awareness about this issue, please email us as soon as possible at 16andPregnantCasting2017@gmail.com.”

Include the city and state you live in and the reason why you’d like to share your story as part of “16 and Pregnant.”

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age as of February 1, 2017 to apply.

Interesting.

Lingering Ebola Stigma Might Have Killed Time’s Person of the Year Salome Karwoh After Childbirth

salome

Sad news!

The  Liberian nurse featured in Time Magazine’s 2014 declaration of the Person of the Year: The Ebola Fighters” has died in childbirth.

Tragically, her death is likely a direct consequence of the ongoing stigma attached to those who once suffered from the disease.

Salome Karwah contracted Ebola “but recovered, unlike most people who contracted the disease,” Time wrote in a feature about Karwah yesterday. Her survival made her immune to the disease and a fierce warrior in the fight because she was among the few who could treat patients without hesitation and fear.

As the pandemic subsided, the stigmatization of those who once had it lives on.

After the outbreak, Karwah eventually married her fiance James Harris, change her name to Salome Harris and had her third child, a daughter who she named Destiny. She got pregnant again and delivered her fourth child, a healthy baby boy she named Solomon,  earlier this month, February 17, via C-Section.

She left the hospital three days later but within hours of coming home, Karwah lapsed into convulsions.

Her husband and her sister rushed her back to the hospital, but no one would touch her, Time reported. She foamed at the mouth with violent seizures which panicked the staff.

“They said she was an Ebola survivor,” her sister Josephine Manley told the magazine by telephone. “They didn’t want contact with her fluids. They all gave her distance. No one would give her an injection.”

Karwah died the next day. “My heart is broken,” Manley said. “Salome loves her children, her [fiance] James. The one-year-old, the newborn, they will grow up never remembering their mother’s face.”

While the cause of the convulsions is unknown to Manley, she thinks something went wrong in the surgery. Still, she insists that if her sister had been treated immediately, she might have had a chance.

Instead, “she was stigmatized.”

Her death devastated those who were aware of Karwah’s tireless efforts to save people’s lives.

“To survive Ebola and then die in the larger yet silent epidemic of health system failure… I have no words,” said Ella Watson-Stryker, a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) health promoter who worked with Karwah in Liberia and was also among the Ebola Fighters on the 2014 cover.

Devastating. Our thoughts are with her family and friends.

Watch Too Pregnant to Attend Oscars in Person Natalie Portman’s ‘Mean Tweets’ Segment

maxresdefault-1

Before the Academy Award broadcast on Sunday, February 27 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California, second-time mom-to-be Natalie Portman announced that she was too pregnant to attend.

The Jackie biopic star released a statement about her decision to sit out the award show and stay home with husband, choreographer Benjamin Millepied and 5-year old son, Aleph.

“Due to my pregnancy, I am unable to attend the Independent Spirit Awards and the Academy Awards,” Postman said in a statement to E! News on Saturday. “I feel so lucky to be honored among my fellow nominees and wish them the most beautiful of weekends.”

The actress is nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her leading role in Jackie. She had previously won an Oscar for the 2010 film Black Swan and was nominated before that for her supporting role in the 2004 movie Closer.

Portman was also nominated for Best Female Lead at the Film Independent Spirit Awards for her role in Jackie. The film also got an Oscar nod for Best Feature, Best Director and Best Editing.

Back in 2011, she accepted her Oscar for Best Actress while pregnant with Aleph and thanked Millepied, a choreographer who worked with her on the film, for giving her “the most important role of [her] life.” Her then soon-to-be-born son. Awwww!

Though not there in person, she was seen in an Oscar night version of  host Jimmy Kimmel‘s popular “Mean Tweets” segment.

She read the first one actually: “I feel like if u went to lunch w/Natalie Portman she would only order a hot tea with Lemon and MAYBE some toast, but definitely not an entree tho,” she read before the camera pans out and she turns to show the silhouette of her big belly.”

1070-natalieportman-tweets-oscars

“You’re wrong,” she whispers looking the camera dead in the eye! Hilarious.
