Judge: Sherri Shepherd cannot Remove Her Name from surrogate Child’s Birth Certificate

Monday, an appeal court upheld a lower court’s decision that previously decided that Sherri Shepherd cannot remove her name from 1-year old LJ’s birth certificate, PEOPLE reported.

LJ is a product of a surrogate pregnancy in 2013 that started before The View cohost and her now ex-husband Lamar Sally split.

Surrogate carrier Jessica Bartholomew was still pregnant at the time.

Since the baby’s birth Shepherd has been trying to fight being parentally responsible for the offspring.

The two entered a settlement regarding payment of child support which is ongoing. In April, a Pennsylvania judge ordered the support and ruled that Shepherd is legally the baby’s mom.

But Shepherd appealed a trial court ruling denying her from removing her name from his birth certificate.

Her name was originally not included because she was not present at the birth, and refused to acknowledge she was the mother, resulting in litigation, Melissa Brisman, owner of the New Jersey-based Reproductive Possibilities, previously told PEOPLE.

Shepherd told the magazine in August that the only reason she agreed to the surrogacy is because she feared Sally wild leave her if she didn’t.

A Pregnant Woman’s Guide to Surviving Thanksgiving without Knocking Someone Out

Thanksgiving-dinner_stock

So you’re heading to your cousin’s home upstate for Thanksgiving this year and as much fun as the season is for reconnecting and reuniting with family, it’s also known for being tense, sometimes. You may experience old grudges barely buried rise from the dead for discussion again at the dinner table. Nosy meddling elders will ask a bunch of inappropriate questions. You’ll get tons of unsolicited advice on names, parenting tips, and a bunch of do’s and don’ts.

Being pregnant and having extra hormones, a shorter fused and less patience and one snide remark about how wide your butt has gotten could send you over the edge. Woooosah! You can survive it all with these few tips:

  • Practice your Fake Smile now that you conjure up to prepare yourself for the onslaught of well-meaning, albeit personally invasive questions. (Are you sure you’re not having twins? So you’re sticking with that name, huh? Are you done or are you gonna try for one more? You look like you’ve gained a lot; maybe you shouldn’t eat that?)
  • Carry one of those small stress ball that you can squeeze to ease the tension when inevitably someone thinks its funny to compare your belly to the Butterball . You don’t want to knock anybody out and ruin Thanksgiving.
  • Wear something light. In fact, layer. A maternity tank, under a shirt, under a light sweater should do so you can unpeel as you get warm. The homeowner probably had the oven on all day cooking and baking.  A big belly and sweaty under breasts are not a good combination. Save the cute sweater dress for Christmas tree shopping.

5 THINGS A PREGNANT WOMAN SHOULD NOT  WEAR ON THANKSGIVING

  • 4. Go easy on the sugary foods. If you haven’t already had your gestational diabetes test yet, you’re gonna want to skip the sweet potato pie and the apple pie… and the pumpkin pie. Having to prick your finger three times a day  all because you lost your mind and went and elevated your sugar 1000 percent is not the business. No ma’am.
  • Take any offer of someone who gets up so you can have a comfy seat. That may be the last time you see your obnoxious cousin exercise good manners. Besides, pregnancy is for maximizing in and all empathy perks you can get.
  •  As for footwear, you’re going to want to skip the heels and go with some ballet flats, boots or low wedges. Your center of gravity is off with your growing belly. Sky high heels+ a plate of food +a preggers woman = an accident waiting to happen.

You’re going to get a lot of unsolicited advice, a couple of jabs and maybe a tacky joke or two coming at you and it may get overwhelming. Go in getting ready to hear it all but don’t take it personal, they only mean well. You can pick friends, but you can’t pick family.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Chrissy Teigen and 5 Other Women Who Love Their New Curves from Pregnancy (5 ESSAYS)

chrissy teigen

Model Chrissy Teigen is loving the new curves she is developing while pregnant and she is being vocal about it. The FABLife TV host is also sharing regular bump progression photos in social media with her fans and followers. Most of the feedback is positive.

“Hello new thighs!” Teigen wrote in the comment section to the above photo shared recently.  “You appeared out of nowhere but I am not mad at it!”

It’s wonderful to read about her embracing her new body because many women dislike their pregnant bodies and never adjust to the new curves, sagging and extra weight that become permanent.

Jillian Michael infamously told Women’s Health Magazine in 2010 that after working so hard to lose tremendous amount of weight, she didn’t want a baby to “ruin it”. There are others out there who are fearful of pregnancy because of the changes.

But not all are, I managed to find five women who wrote amazing and powerful first person narratives this year and recently about their respective evolution to love their postpartum Body. Check them out:

Why Everyone’s Saying Mark Zuckerberg’s Planned 2-Month Paternity Leave is a Big Deal

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday that he planned to take a two month paternity leave when his wife Priscilla Chan gives birth to their first child, a daughter. The personal decision is being hailed as a victory for parental rights and family leave policies.

In an opinion piece today, writer Catherine Rampell writes that Zuckerberg’s announcement could be used to shape policy or at least conventional opinion on men taking longer  periods off from work after their wives give birth.

New moms would attest that the extra hand is welcome and needed.  Recent surveys from Society for Human Resource Management and the Families and Work Institute indicate that only 1 in 6 firms in America offer paid paternity leave outside the tech sector which is quite advanced comparatively in the parental leave area.

“But even when men are offered paid leave, they usually don’t take it, or at least not for any substantial period of time,” Rampell writes. “After California passed a law entitling most workers, both male and female, to up to six weeks of paid family leave, the average father took a whopping 7.5 days off after the birth of a child.”

Wow!

Touring the new San Francisco Acute Care and Trauma Center the Zuckerberg’s donation helped build on November 7. The Hospital is named after them.

Jenna McGregor, also from the post, writes in a similar piece today, “Research from Boston College’s Center for Work & Familyfound in 2011 that 76 percent of fathers are back to work within a week of a child’s birth or adoption; 96 percent return within two weeks. Last year, the same center found that less than 10 percent of fathers took six weeks or more off.”

But millenials, leading with Zuckerberg, are changing the norm. That’s because he’s helping to finally destigmatize paternity leave.

Rampell cites that  survey after survey show that fathers want to be more active co-parents and more present in their children’s lives.

As a flip in gender roles, men today are struggling to balance work and family, and dealing with parental guilt, even more so than women.

But to do something about it and actually take paternal leave when offered? The stigma of being viewed as weak, not masculine or not committed enough to their jobs is what stops them, Rampell summarizes.

“Such stigma hurts not only those frustrated, guilt-ridden fathers, but also children and beleaguered mothers,” she continues “Research has shown that when women disproportionately take advantage of work-life accommodations, employers end up punishing women as a class, relegating them to so-called mommy tracks. Those women who do manage to hang on to demanding full-time careers are more likely to get stuck working the exhausting “second shift” at home than their male counterparts are.”

Unfair, but with more men in high profile and influential positions like Zuckerberg take extended time off, there could be a shift in mindset and eventually policy.

McGregor posits that an equal paternity leave policy could help adjust gender pay inequity too.

“Such benefits serve two functions: They help attract employees, particularly younger ones, who are more interested in sharing parenting responsibilities and improving work-life balance,” McGregor opines. “But they also make it possible for men to take the kind of leaves that could help improve the gender gap in both pay and leadership positions.”

Both are interesting pieces, and are akin to all the chatter and buzz abound during  Yahoo!‘s CEO Marissa Mayer‘s pregnancies.

4 Tips for Avoiding Couple Conflict over Money

CONFLICT OVER MONEY

Money may not have the power to buy happiness, but it sure can stress us out.

In fact, a survey by the American Psychological Association pinpointed money as the leading cause of stress for Americans, with 72 percent saying they had felt at least some stress about money in the previous month.

What’s more, about one-third of adults with partners said money is a major cause of conflict in their relationship.

Those survey results aren’t necessarily surprising, but there’s also no need to treat them as inevitable, says Cynthia Fick, author of the book “The Sisterhood of Money: The Art of Creating Wealth from Your Heart”.

“A lot of couples don’t like to talk about money, but good communication can play a big role in reducing both the stress and the conflict,” she says.

And it’s also important for couples to remember that, regardless of who makes the most money or who handles the monthly bill paying, it’s a partnership and both people need to be involved in financial decisions.

“A lot of couples simply don’t make those decisions together,” Fick says. “They don’t talk things out, they don’t try to understand their differing views about spending and saving, so that creates a situation where trouble between them can start brewing.”

Fick finds that many women feel less confident about their money acumen than do men, and so will cede financial decisions to their partner.

“Sometimes those negative beliefs come from traditional teachings that told women they were less capable of managing money,” Fick says. “That’s simply not true, so wives stuck in that thinking need to come to an understanding that money issues are not somehow beyond them.”

She has these tips to help couples avoid cash-induced conflict.

1. Accept your differences. Just because your spouse’s views about money are different from yours doesn’t make that person wrong and you right,” Fick says. “Sometimes different is just different.” It’s important to stay open to compromise and be willing to listen to the other point of view, she says.

2. Act as a team. You both have knowledge, experience and viewpoints to bring to the situation. Take advantage of that because when you work together you are stronger, Fick says. “Think of it this way,” she says. “When both spouses are big savers, they might not have as much fun. When they are both big spenders, they might put their future in jeopardy because they won’t have enough savings.”

3.  Don’t wait for a crisis to talk. Discussions about financial matters are best held when heads are cool and no major problem has erupted that would set stress levels spiking, Fick says. “You can set a regular time to talk about your money situation so, hopefully, it will be a more relaxed atmosphere,” she says.

4. If necessary, seek help. The two of you don’t have to go this alone, Fick says. If you need financial planning assistance, money management counseling or even relationship counseling, you should seek assistance from a professional. That person can listen to the concerns of both spouses and offer advice from an objective and knowledgeable standpoint, Fick says.

Shear & Glimmer on the AMA’s Red Carpet and Host J.Lo’s 10 Dress Changes (PHOTOS)

Sunday night was the American Music Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California hosted by Jennifer Lopez with intermittent announcement duties by Ciara who left little to the imagination in a well constructed Balmain dress.

As usual, we tracked some of the celebrity moms that we’ve “bumpwatched” in the past to check out what and who they wore on the red carpet or on stage.

Gwen Stefani performed “Used to Love You” but before, she walked the red carpet in a stunning sheer and panel Yousef El-Jasmi dress. Carrie Underwood won the AMA for Favorite Country Female artist and sang her hit song “Heartbeat” during the show. On the red carpet she wowed in an Ellie Madi dress, Greymer shoes, Kimberley McDonald earnings and rings by Kimberly McDonald and Anne Sisteron.

There was much shine from all the sequined dresses which dominated this year’s red carpet.  Paula Abdul, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato all did sequins as did our Bumpwatch alum Danica McKeller.

Shear with jewels. Shear with metallic. Sheer with lace.  It seems there were many ways to present shear.  The trend from last season has spilled over as we saw it on Ciara in Balmain, model Hannah Davis, who also presented an award, in Naeem Khan dress, Stuart Weitzman shoes, and Anita Ko jewelry,  and Stefani while performing in Jean Paul Gaultier.

Jennifer Lopez must have won the award for most dress changes during a show as she wore a reported 10 dressed during the course of the evening. My favorite was her red carpet dress. Wow!
