Post-Pregnancy Bounce Back: Do These 2 Full Body Post Natal Workouts At Home

get your body back bellyitchblog.com

Getting back into shape after having a baby can be a challenge but it doesn’t have to be. I think the hardest thing is starting. With new parenting responsibilities and fatigue from lack of sleep, many new moms struggle to find time to even work out and to go to the gym.  Having an in-home routine you can do when you  first wake up or perhaps after dinner or an hour before bedtime, perhaps  while watching TV may do the trick.

But everything takes time.

“I believe that embracing your current shape while working towards a more toned one is the best approach, especially if you want to stay motivated and engaged with an exercise and eating plan.” says Samantha Clayton Senior Director of Fitness Education at Herbalife.

Clayton, who is also a mom herself,  offers two basic workouts will help you to kick start working towards having a more toned, strong and healthier physique all around.

Setting a realistic goal and time frame will help you avoid feelings of failure and allow you to actually enjoy the body changing process, Clayton advises.

  1. FULL CORE ROUTINE – Follow these 5 moves to strengthen your entire core

Time: 20 Minutes

Equipment: Exercise Mat or Comfortable area on the floor

Start the workout with 15-20 perfect form CRUNCHES. Begin by lying face up on the floor with your knees bent. Contract your abs to curl your shoulders towards the pelvis, keeping your hands behind or beside the neck or crossed over your chest. Be conscience to use your abs and not your head to lift your shoulders off the floor, hold for a second then return to starting position.

Next, 30 seconds of BICYCLE AB CRUNCHES. Remaining on the floor, stretch your legs out straight and place your hands behind your head. Raise your legs one at a time so that your thighs are perpendicular to the ground, and your calves are parallel to the ground, but keeping your feet together. Contract your abdominal muscles alternate bending your right leg and straightening your left similar to the motion you’d make while pedaling a bicycle. Use your abdominal muscles to crunch your body forward so that your elbow can reach your knee.

Moving on to a 45-60 second SIDE PLANK. Place your hand on the floor under you and straighten your supporting arm, raising the top half of your body off the ground. You can raise the other arm straight over you or let it rest on your side to help with balance. Keep your legs straight, letting the lower half of your body rest on the side of your bottom foot. Repeat on the other side for another 45-60 seconds.

The LAYING DOWN LEG RAISE works the deepest of the core muscles. Begin lying on your back on a mat. Place your hands under your butt to stabilize your pelvis, then without letting your lower back lift, pull your knees toward your chest, and then straighten your legs back to the starting position. To increase the difficulty, do leg raises on an incline bench. Do 10 raises 3 times.

The VACUUM can be done almost anywhere: sitting up, laying down, in bed, at the office or even while driving your car. All you have to do is suck your belly in as far as you can, and hold. Make sure you are pulling your abs in as if they are meeting your back. When you hold your tummy in hold it in for 10 to 15 seconds then release. Try to continue breathing and don’t hold your breath. Gaining muscular control is the key of this move.

Fashion Lookbook: Get Inspired by These 7 Maternity Outfits Leah Ashley Rocked

leah style 981

The only sad part about FABLife day time lifestyle talk show Stylist Leah Ashley giving birth to her first child is that am going to miss the very stylish ways she assembled her clothes while pregnant. The co-host to the new show and started her career as a popular YouTuber used accent colors and mix and matched with texture and layered wonderfully to pull together a perfectly styled maternity wardrobe.

I enjoy recreating outfits I’ve seen and hunting down similar if not the same piece. I am a firm believer in not reinventing the wheel. That being said, I spent some time curating my fave looks Ashley wore while preggers and shared on her Instagram page and assembled them into style collections. I share below why I loved each look and where you can get a similar items to recreate the looks. I’m going to pin these on our Bellyitch Maternity Fashion page which you can access.

First above, a chunky cable knit sweater over slouchy sweatpants with a leopard scarf draped in an infinity loop around the neck is a great casual weekend look.

Overalls were in style for everyone for a couple of seasons now. That is perfect because traditionally that’s what pregnant women wore because there wasn’t much maternity options. Here, Ashley mixed denim, light denim shirt with stone washed overalls and accented with red slingbacks. Perfect. The statement necklace polishes off the look and is unexpected because it is so ornate compared to super cas denim.

This ensemble can only work during the first trimester when a mom-to-be hasn’t popped quite much yet, but still wants to conceal a growing bump under a fairly loose top. Pairing this black silk turtleneck with drawstring shorts does the trick. The gladiator boots adds some chic flavor.

leah style 4

Gingham is also a big pattern this year. And also great for hiding a bump in the early months are peplum tops. This top over denim skinny jeans are the money. Add red ballet slippers for cute outfit to wear child shopping or out and about during the weekend.

leah style collage 5

For more dressy functions or work, a comfy black dress works and wedges are perfect for getting some height but are less unstable as heels. A leather motorcycle jacket is a great outerwear topper. Bucket bags are perfect for carrying all your stuff.

My eyes immediately went to her heels. Oooh la la. It looks effortlessly stylish and polka dot with anything is classic. With Ashley’s short crop hair, it gives me a modern Audrey Hepburn feel. Love it!

leah style 98

This isn’t a complete outfit but I like the idea of mixing patterns. Here, her gingham cropped pants worn with black and white pumps work so well together. Break the rules why don’t you?

There you go. Hope they inspired your maternity wardrobe for the next few months.

Seth Meyer Is Expecting First Child with Wife, Rounds Up Mini Late Night Talk Show Host Baby Boom

seth meyer

He rounds up the little baby boom among other late night hosts. Molly McNearne, wife of Jimmy Kimmel, welcomed their first child together last July. Kimmel is dad to two children, a son and daughter, from a previous marriage.

Carson Daly and his wife Siri Pinter also welcomed their third child together last August.

Consider These 3 Things Before Letting your Child have Her First Mobile Phone

child own phone

A recent study commissioned by the National Consumers League found that nearly 60 percent of parents said they offered cell phones to their children at ages 10 or 11. Is that too young?

Parents of school-aged children eventually find themself in a quandry over when is the right time to allow their child to have their own phone.

Boys Town, a national child care organization, started over 95 years ago, offers these tips to help parents make the right choice for their family on how to decide the right time for a child to have an iPhone 6S or 6S Plus and how to manage the technology.

  • Children under the age of 12 should be under some sort of adult supervision at all times, therefore an adult will be with them and likely have access to a phone. In this case there is less need for a child’s own phone.
  • If the child is beyond the need for constant adult supervision, consider the child’s maturity level. If they are known for losing things, now may not be the best time. However, if they are responsible with “lesser things”, it might be time to let him or her extend that responsible behavior to a phone.
  • A family policy should be established for phone usage. The policy should address who the child is permitted to call and what the child can do with the phone (text, talk, surf the internet, download music or other content). Parameters should also be set for where and when he/she can use it and how the parent will monitor the usage.

“Smartphone usage isn’t an all-or-nothing proposition,” says Laura Buddenberg, parent trainer at Boys Town. “Allow your child to have the phone for short periods of time and see how it goes.”Boys Town counsels families and schools across the country on the best parenting and discipline practices. These strategies incorporate those teachings and can be used for effective parenting in the home.”

Now when it comes to social media access, that’s a whole other story. At least parents should know that most sites restrict children under 13 from using their services. Federal Trade Commission regulations and guidance that require them to take extensive steps to secure children’s privacy, unless it’s a service made for kids, most social media sites just limit them from joining altogether.  At least that’s one decision to put off until adolescence.

Thanksgiving Traveling with A Toddler Tips

Molly Sims Instagrammed herself with her 7-month old daughter Scarlett in a baby carrier and her 3-year old son in tow also as they prepared to travel for the holidays. “Nyc bound #weredoingthis” the actress and model captioned the photo taken yesterday.

If your family is hitting the road and taking a long-distance car trip to your Thanksgiving destination this year, here are snippets from our Thanksgiving travel tips to make it a smoother ride especially if you’re traveling with a toddler:

Set Clear Expectations

Before venturing out on the road, start small and positive by setting guidelines, says Carrie Krawiec, Michigan-based family therapist at Birmingham Maple Clinic. “Parents can set their children up for success by creating easy-to-remember expectations before leaving home,” she says. Create a list of five car behaviors to follow, such as keeping your hands to yourself and your bottom in the seat, using an inside voice and avoiding putting your feet on chair in front of you, suggests Krawiec.

Encourage positive behavior with travel rewards. “Parents can gauge their child’s level of attention by saying ‘I am going to watch these things and every five minutes if you have done this, you will earn a point for a sticker or silly band,’” says Krawiec. “This will make travel more cooperative.”

Charge Electronics

Even though you may limit your toddler’s time with tablets and electronic games at home, an iPad or Gameboy may be just what your child needs while traveling on long road trips. “With the age of technology, we have a big bonus,” says Christine Gutierrez, New York-based psychotherapist.

Many vehicles come equipped with DVD players and outlets for charging electronics to ease the challenge of traveling with young children. Pop in your child’s favorite movie or host a family sing-along with his favorite CD.

Make the trip educational, too. Download educational games and applications on a tablet to entertain your child or pick up a book or CD before taking off on your road trip. “Compromise is key here,” says Gutierrez. “Make baby happy and the rest of you shall be happy in the car as well.”

Chomp Down on Snacks Often, hunger cravings can cause a toddler to act out or misbehave. Prepare for a long road trip by packing a cooler of snacks and drinks to satisfy his hunger. Non-messy items, such as grapes, carrots or fruit gummies, will keep your toddler and your vehicle clean during snack time. Juice packs or milk in a Sippy cup can also comfort a sleepy toddler while traveling.

Break Out Goodie Bags The idea of being locked inside a vehicle for hours on end doesn’t necessarily sound appealing to a young child; however, if the trip includes goodie bags filled with games and activities, she may be more than eager to jump into that car seat.

Keep the bag in the front seat with you and break out games and activities along the way as your toddler gets antsy, such as a coloring book and crayons, an etch-a-sketch or even bubbles to blow out the window. Make the trip educational by purchasing a map and asking your toddler to point out states you drive through or license plates from each state. When your toddler is tired of one game or activity, take out another to keep her occupied.

Parents can include any of the following in a “goodie” bag for a long road trip with toddlers:

  • Dry erase board with markers
  • Stickers
  • Small Cars
  • New Books
  • Paper for Drawing
  • Travel Versions of Favorite Games
  • Dollar Store Finds

You can make activities much simpler by bringing along a lap desk or a cookie sheet your child can place on her lap. As a bonus, using magnets on the cookie sheet creates a game of its own, and the raised edges will prevent crayons or cars from landing on the floor of the car.

“Planning ahead is the key to preventing restless, unhappy children (and parents) during a car trip,” says Richard Peterson, vice president of education at Kiddie Academy. “In fact, you can even sneak in a little education along the way by playing classic car games, adjusted to fit your child’s age.”

Peterson suggests asking toddlers to search for shapes, colors or specific objects along the way. “The games will serve as a distraction, but also help to hone observation skills,” he says.

If all else fails, crank up the tunes or make a pit stop at a park along the way to deter boredom for your little one. “Boredom is probably the biggest difficulty your child will encounter during a long car trip,” says Peterson. “Toddlers live in the here and now and do not have the life experience to understand that the destination will be worth the time in the car seat.”

Magic Potion: Rub On Some Breast milk To Cure These 17 Health Conditions

Bellyitch Rewind

17-uses-for-breastmilk1
Aaaah nourishing breast milk.  Great for giving a newborn nutritious nutrients and passing on critical antibodies crucial for their healthy growth. But did you know that breast milk is great for solving eye irritations for any person, not just the baby? Did you also know that hospitals use donated breast milk to soothe the scars of burn unit victims?

Yup! It’s that miraculous source from the heavens that keeps on giving. Who knew you could recycle breast milk?
Researchers reveal that there are lots and lots of uses for breast milk that many people probably were clueless about, Check out some other uses:
1. Pink eye breast milk (eye infections). You can put a few drops of breast milk into baby’s eyes or any family members who are suffering from pink eye. The breast milk will keep the area clean and will initiate healing. You can do this as often as possible.
2.Eye puffiness or redness. Wonderful for removing puffiness and is used just as you would cows milk for the same purpose. Dab on with some cotton wool.
3. Opening a stuffy nose. Breast milk is natural and a great alternative to medications which might even make the situation worse. Just squirt a few drops into baby’s nose while he is lying down, then use a bulb to suction the excess out from his nose.
4. Sore throats and mouth sores. Swirling some of the breast milk around in the mouth and even gargling with it can help. Even a breastfed baby can be given some breast milk in a cup to rinse out the mouth.
5. Eczema and other skin rashes. Breast milk will keep the skin clean and will prevent flare ups. Just apply a layer of breast milk to the area and allow to air dry.
6. Dry skin. Using breast milk as a moisturizer.
7.Cradle cap. Just apply to baby’s scalp a few times per day.
8. Breast milk diaper rash. Using breast milk to treat and prevent normal nappy rash.
9. Breast milk ear infections. Squirt a few drops inside the ear for healing and some pain relief. (can be used for infants and grown-ups)
10. Insect bites. Rub a small amount on the bite to relieve the itching and promote the healing process.
11. Chicken pox. Apply the breast milk on the skin to relieve itching just as you would any other ointment.
12.Warts. Apply daily on the wart until it dries up and falls off.
13. Treating sore nipples. Putting some breast milk on your nipples can often heal them faster than any over the counter nipple cream. It can also prevent cracking by keeping them supple.
14. Immune boost. Older children can be given a glass of breast milk or more everyday to boost their immune systems and keep them from becoming ill.
15. Ease cold/flu symptoms. Get over your cold quicker with some liquid gold breast milk. Drink as much as you can.
16. Make-up remover. Breast milk can naturally and easily remove eye make-up.
17. Skin cleanser. Breast milk will gently cleanse your skin and can prevent acne because of its antibacterial properties.

Vitamin D: What Do Kids Really Need?

vitamin d

With Daylight Saving Time being over, we can expect less time with sun which is an excellent natural source of Vitamin D. Just in time Hallie Rich, Founder/CEO of alternaVites, offers a guest post giving us insight into Vitamin D, its benefits and how much children really need:

Vitamin D may be the trendiest vitamin at the moment, but we like to think of it as the LBD (little black dress) of supplements-something that is essential and should never go out of style.  It is an essential nutrient because it aids in calcium absorption, which helps support bone health. Without it, no matter how much calcium you consume, it will not be utilized as efficiently in the body. Additionally, vitamin D can help support many heart, circulatory and immune functions in the body.   It is also extremely important with muscle and nerve functions

Vitamin D is one vitamin that our bodies cannot produce on its own.  Our bodies need either sunlight, food sources or a supplement to convert to Vitamin D that it can use.  Since cold weather usually means less sunshine, receiving adequate amounts of Vitamin D during the winter months may be more difficult to achieve.  But don’t be fooled; even if you escape harsh winters and live in warm climates, if you limit how much you are out in the sun (and use – rightfully so – sunscreen), this can have an impact on how much Vitamin D your body will produce.

So, how does your child fare when it comes to Vitamin D? It’s very easy to find out.  Your child’s pediatrician or physician can run a simple blood test called 25(OH)D that will tell you.  From there, the doctor will be able to help make recommendations on next steps.    If your child does show a lower level of Vitamin D, you are not alone.  According to a recent study at Boston Children’s Hospital, 1 in 5 teenage boys and 1 in 4 teenage girls have low vitamin D levels in their blood.  Additionally, it is reported that approximately 7.6 million US children and teens are deficient and 50.8 million are insufficient or have inadequate vitamin D levels for bone and overall health.

As your doctor will tell you (and guide you), there are some easy ways to increase Vitamin D levels.  For example, look to incorporate foods rich in Vitamin D like fortified milk (including cows’, almond, soy, coconut, rice) or yogurt, salmon, mushrooms, cheese, eggs (specifically the yolk), and fortified breakfast cereals.  These are all nutritious foods and would be good to add to your child’s diet regardless.  Additionally, if your child still isn’t getting the recommended 400 – 600 IUs daily, supplementing your child’s diet with a Vitamin D product may also be beneficial.

Hallie Rich is Founder/CEO of alternaVites.
