Weekend Style Pick: Slim Pants & Pencil Skirts

These are the last days of Summer. Your chances to wear slingbacks, summer Whites and flirty dresses are coming to a close.

A good Summer/Fall transition choice is sim fit pants and skirts.

They are versatile because you can dress them up or down with a t-shirt or blouse and funky or elegant jewelry.

I’m heading out tonight for another Virgo birthday celebration and I plan to cinch everything in with a pair of black skinny jeans and a black pencil skirt

Edited to add my look with baby my sis and our Bellyitch Blog blogger, Posh The Socialite.

That’s the other perk of these pieces: the slimming effect. Perfect!

If you are heading out tonight, consider slim jeans or a pencil skirt as a cute and cool seasonal transition look.

The Test your Teen Athlete’s Pediatrician will Have Your Kid Take this Year

A few years ago, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) began requiring college athletes to be tested for sickle cell disease and trait before being permitted to play.

The reason: the blood disease requires extra attention paid to hydration and rest and the organization wanted to ensure coaching staffs were aware of players on teams that they needed to keep an eye out for.

This applies to kids with the trait and not the full blown disease as well. It is concentrated among people of African descent, but other races are susceptible and have the hereditary disease as well.

At first, the American Society of Hematology opposed the requirement saying it was “groundless” and really implemented to protect the NCAA from legal liability and not really in genuine interest of students.

But the issue jumped to the forefront again recently after the death of a Texas teen football player with the disease.

Joshua “Josh” Warren of Longview, Texas collapsed after a very intense practice and later died.

Even though the requirement has been on the books for a while, pediatrician have been on high alert to test patients since Warren’s death.

If you have a kid who plays sports, even junior high level or middle school, his doctor may be asking you to test him or her for the trait if he wasn’t already tested at birth.

Just a heads up, parents.

Eva Mendes Adds ‘Sexy Mom’ Flavor to Her NY&CO Collection

IMG_5162-0.png

Eva Mendes has been designing clothes for her New York & Company line for several seasons now, but one recent major life event has since shifted her perspective on what women want to wear: becoming a mother.

E! News caught up with proud new mama to baby Esmeralda and chatted with Mendes about much her new September collection means to her.

“I think that being a mom now myself, I love dressing…not so much like a mom but there is a sexiness in kind of giving into the mom thing and that I’m dressing as an example for a little girl. Like, I’m someone’s example!”

The brunette beauty added, “That’s exciting for me and I make clothes that I think are really beautiful for moms, for all women, but certainly for moms.”

And when asked how she feels about seeing more diversity on the runways at fashion weeks across the globe, Mendes dished, “I don’t think it’s one or the other. I think as long as there is diversity and everyone is represented, that’s pretty rad.”

During her recent interview with Glam Belleza Latina‘s 2015 Fall issue, Mendes shared that she loves getting feedback from her customers and women on social media about her New York & Company collection and her CIRCA Beauty line.

In fact, many have wondered if it’s really her taking the time out to respond to the many comments on her Instagram, to which she answered, “That is 100 percent me. It actually breaks my heart when I can’t respond. I love connecting with women; it’s fun for me.”

That Mendes is a real girls’ girl!

Tyra Banks and Chrissy Tiegen Open up About Fertility Struggles

fab life

The same week that Gabrielle Union opened up about fertility struggles, Tyra Banks and Chrissy Tiegen are also sharing about their personal battles.

A clip from Banks’ new lifestyle show,  FABLife, reveals the two models getting real on what they’ve gone through to start a family.

Tiegen revealed that in the 10 years she has been with and later married to John Legend, she has spent some of that time trying to conceive but it has been hard and she sort of resents the constant prying by others asking when she will start a family.

The outspoken in social media star said she is asked about it“every single time I sit down for an interview with anybody.”

She seems to resent it.

“I can’t imagine being that nosy to be like, ‘So, when are the kids coming?’” she says. “Because who knows what somebody’s going through?… I will say, honestly, John and I were having trouble…it’s been a process. We’ve seen fertility doctors, and then once you open up about all those things to other people you start learning that a lot of other people in your life are seeing these people, and they have this shame about it.”

Banks said she could relate.

“I am so tired of seeing on my social media, ‘Why don’t you have kids? Why don’t you have kids?’ You don’t know — you don’t know what I’m going through,” she said, breaking into tears. “When I was 23 years old, I used to tell myself, ‘In three years, I’m going to have kids.’ Then I turned 24. ‘In three years, I’m going to have kids.’ Every single year I kept saying that. And then after awhile, it’s like, OK, now I want to, and it’s not so easy.”

The episode will air this Monday but you can Watch the clip from the show below:

Here are Natural Ways to Pick Your Next Baby’s Gender

Are you one of those parents who refuse to try for another kid out of fear you’ll have a baby of the same gender.

Never fear, check out  Parentdish’s ideas we’ve shared in the past on how to manipulate a baby’s gender.

Consider these tips;

 Start the day right

Skipping breakfast reduces blood glucose levels and it’s known from IVF research that high levels of glucose encourage the growth and development of male embryos over female ones. (Although a balanced diet is obviously best to aid conception.)

Watch your calorie intake

A study of 740 women found those who ate a high-calorie diet around the time they were ovulating were 10 per cent more likely to have a boy. The researchers also reckon the trend for lower-calorie diets may explain why, over the past 40 years, there’s been a slow but consistent decline of around one boy per 1,000 births every year.

Go bananas for boys

A study from the Netherlands found women who had diets with high levels of sodium and potassium (bananas and tomatoes) made conceiving a boy more likely. Want a girl? The same study found women who cut out salty foods and consumed lots of calcium and magnesium (beans and nuts) were 80 percent more likely to have girl.

If you’re going to give it a try make sure you don’t exceed 6g a day of salt and avoid obesity or eating too little – both can have lifelong health consequences for your child.

Keep cool for a girl

Some say a man’s testicles should be cool before sex if you want a daughter so choose boxers over tighty-whitey’s; for a son, go for the latter. And you need to keep your cool too – according to some, being relaxed when you conceive means you’ll have a girl whereas if you’re a worrier, you should start buying blue babygros.

Get in the right position

The ancient Greeks believed men who had sex while lying on their right side were more likely to have a son, while Italian folklore says the missionary position is best for a girl. They might have been on to something too – female sperm cope better than male sperm with the acid environment lower down the vagina so the missionary position is said to work a treat.

For a boy, deep penetration could boost your chances. This deposits sperm near the opening of the cervix which favours fast-moving male sperm.

Spring for a girl, autumn for a boy

In Western Europe, statistics show April’s the best month for conceiving a girl, while October and November bring forth boys. Nature’s way of giving boys a helping hand? Baby boys tend to be weaker than girls and more vulnerable to illness so this way they’ll be born before the bitter winter months…

Oh, oh, oh!’ for a boy

Go for the big-O if you want a boy as it’s been claimed the body produces chemicals after orgasm that make the vaginal environment more alkaline, favouring Y-sperm. Also, when a woman reaches orgasm, contractions of the womb draw sperm towards the cervix, giving faster male sperm a boost!

good luck!

Best Nursery Gadgets for New Parents

baby nursery gadgets

As a new parent, you know that your beloved little one requires an ample amount of care and attention. Luckily, with current technological advancements, there are tools that provide you with additional support, so you can ensure your baby’s health and safety. The majority of new parent gadgets are created to monitor your child’s sleep patterns and eating habits and to let you have a remote presence. Here are some of the top baby gadgets for you and your infant:

Video Baby Monitor

Withings is a new smart baby monitor that is equipped with advanced audio and video technology. The camera gives you a wide-angle view of your baby’s room and a high-definition zoom for up-close monitoring. The camera is able to pan and tilt, so you can assess your child’s safety from all angles. The audio quality of the monitor is superb in its ability to pick up the sound of your baby’s breathing. All video and audio is transmitted via Wi-Fi to your iPhone 6, where you can view your infant’s activity and engage with him or her through speech or music. The app sends notifications to your smartphone when the monitor picks up any noise or movements.

Baby Sound Machine

Help your baby fall asleep with a sound machine that simulates the sounds of the womb. The Brookstone White Noise Sound Machine for Baby projects resonant, omni-directional sound. It has six varieties of serene sounds, composed specifically for the aid of your child’s sleep. The sounds are based on the DELTA brainwave pattern associated with deep sleep, and the rhythm of the sounds matches the natural rhythm of your baby’s sleep waves. This sound machine also has a gradual tempo and volume decrease and a timed shut-off.

Baby Movement Monitor

The Mimo baby monitor is built into a wearable onesie that you can customize to fit your little one. The cloth is made of soft, organic cotton, so your baby’s skin will not become irritated. The onesie is equipped with an information sensor that monitors your baby’s breathing, body position, sleep activity and skin temperature. You can review this data on your iPhone, and the app notifies you when your baby wakes up or changes his or her breathing pattern or body position. The body position monitor lets you know whether or not your baby is deep in slumber on his or her back or stomach.

Care Timer

The Itzbeen Pocket Nanny is a simple and helpful device that helps you regulate your baby’s daily schedule. The timer reminds you of feeding, changing and sleep times. The device has an integrated soft light, which allows you to read it in the dark. The timer can be set to blink rather than beep, so you don’t wake your baby with an alarming noise. It is a useful tool for parents, temporary care providers and babysitters who need to be familiarized with your child’s specific schedule.

Hope these suggestions give you something to think about as you prepare your baby’s nursery.

Sofia Vergara’s Willing to have A Baby via Surrogate

Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara is the cover model for October’s In Style magazine and inside, among other topics, she talks getting a surrogate in the future.

The 43-year old actress has a 22-year old son Manolo but is considering having a baby with her fiancé  Magic Mike XXL star Joe Manganiello.

“I’m really borderline at my age to do it. And if I’m going to do it, I would need a surrogate,” the ex-model told the magazine. “I’ll need help. But I don’t mind it; it’s fine.”

Ok. But er um… Did you resolve the ongoing dispute with your ex over those fertilized embroys you guys harvested that you want to destroy but he wants to keep?

We just sayin’

SURVEY: Today’s Moms feel Pressure to Be A Perfect Parent

modern parenting

Bottle maker Tommee Tippee‘s 2015 #ParentOnSurvey‘s results about the modern Millennial Mom and Parent are in.  Here’s the rundown:

You can run, but you can’t hide…

Although six in 10 moms (59%) report feeling empowered to trust their own parenting instincts, the unsolicited advice keeps coming. In fact, the #ParentOn Poll reports moms received “ridiculous advice” from a stranger (14%), mother-in-law (14%), their own mom (12%) or other family member (25%).  Some of that ridiculous advice?

  • “…If I stood on my head every day, I would have a boy!”
  • “Don’t take the baby out of the house until age 4.”
  • “…Prepare my nipples for nursing by rubbing them with a steel wool pad!!”

So, what DOES mom need?

  • Moms crave shut-eye, with 42% citing “more sleep” as the one thing that would have been most helpful to them as a new parent.
  • Weary moms are also hoping to grow an extra set of hands (13%) and magically acquire telepathic powers to better understand their baby’s needs (13%).

A parenting generation gap

  • More than half of today’s moms (54%) say they feel more pressure to be the perfect parent than their own parents did.
  • Although they’re feeling more pressure, nearly half say they are more prepared than the previous generation (46%) and are having more fun than their parents (48%).

Trust your instincts and #ParentOn

With over 50 years of expertise, Tommee Tippee is best known for its award-winning Closer to Nature® baby bottle design. The company’s mission is simple: to make everyday life easier for families everywhere. This philosophy extends beyond product design with the launch of #ParentOn, a multi-platform conversation where parents can share real parenting moments and find judgement-free support – not more advice.

“At Tommee Tippee, we are championing a new norm – a new way of thinking and talking about parenting. Because you can only do what parents have done since the beginning of time: take a deep breath, trust yourself, and Parent On,” comments Parsons.

This sentiment is the inspiration for Tommee Tippee’s new #ParentOn campaign, a global initiative launching today, which has an ingenious answer to what to do with all that overwhelming advice: http://parent-on.com/#advicewipes.

#ParentOn Poll Methodology

The #ParentOn Poll was conducted by ORC International on behalf of Tommee Tippee. Findings are based on an online survey of 1,000 US mothers of children ages 0-6 during June 2015.

Any surprises? We saw none. This is spot on!

Better Storage for Game Pieces! Ingenius!

I so need this in my mud room. Currently, all the shoes are gathered in a huge unorganized pile!

This would definitely replace my bad habit of hanging things on random door knobs.

I get so sentimental about throwing out old thoughtful cards so this storage box is a neat way to keep them all!

A neat homework station! I love this! Going to try to recreate a space like this too!

I am a Feng Shui nut so I am so down with these 8 tips on cutting down the clutter and paper!

Yes! Binders! Binders full of Organization!

This is perfect for all those electronic games and other digital devices. It’s like an electronic version of the board game storage box.

How neat! A portable device storage box made out of a wooden bread box! Very innovative!

This is a very nice way to organize the food so the kids can easily access their after-school snack on their own!

Finally, no more tripping on toys you find all over the house and especially the stairs. Love this.

Hope you are inspired! Now get to work!
