Terrence Howard and Wife Mira welcome son, Qirin Love

terrence howard wife

Congratulations to Empire star, Terrence Howard and his wife Mira Pak on the birth of their first child together on Monday, June 15, a son the couple named Qirin Love.

“He’s beautiful and strong and a whirlwind and my wife is so happy,”  Howard told Access Hollywood  exclusively.  The Wayward Pines star added that the name has Chinese origins and means serenity and prosperity.

His newborn is also an uncle to Howard’s granddaughter Hazel and grandson Adrian.

This is the fourth child for Howard.  He had daughter Aubrey (Adrian and Hazel’s mom), Hunter and Heaven with first wife Lori McCommas.  He married Michelle Ghent in 2010, briefly for a year before divorcing in 2011.

How to Co-Sleep with Your Baby without Bed Sharing

co-sleeping-425ce

Followers of the “attachment parenting” philosophy aren’t the only proponents of co-sleeping; even studies published by the British Medical Journal, Military Medicine and Lancet have shown that there are marked benefits to co-sleeping with your infant. The “Sleeping Position, Orientation, and Proximity in Bedsharing Infants and Mothers” study published in 1996 indicated that infants sleeping near a parent boast regular heart rhythms, more stable temperatures, and fewer long pauses between breaths than infants who sleep alone. The “SIDS Global Task Force Child Care Study” published findings in 2001 that showed that deaths attributed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome were at their lowest rates in countries where co-sleeping is a culturally-accepted, normal practice. However, there are a variety of situations that make sharing your bed with an infant infeasible or downright impossible for your family.

So, can you and your baby reap the benefits of co-sleeping without sharing an actual bed? In a word, yes.

How Can You Co-Sleep Without Bed-Sharing?

The practice of co-sleeping without sharing a bed has become much more common now that there are two commonly accepted terms. The first is co-sleeping, which means that parents and infants sleep in close proximity, but on a separate sleep space, in the same room. The second is bed-sharing, which refers to a sleeping arrangement in which parents and children share a sleep surface. The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly discourages new parents from sharing a bed with their infant, but has encouraged a co-sleeping arrangement in which the baby does sleep in the parents’ bedroom, just in her own safe, separate space. Groups that promote breastfeeding, like La Leche League, suggest that co-sleeping leads to higher breastfeeding success rates than a separate room arrangement.

Co-Sleeper Products

There are entire lines of co-sleeping products that allow you to keep your baby on the same level as your mattress and within arm’s reach, but maintaining your own sleep surfaces. Researching various makes and models of co-sleepers can help you get a better idea of how well you feel each will suit the needs of your unique family. The Arm’s Reach Co-Sleeper attaches to the parents’ bed, providing the benefits of co-sleeping without the risks of bed-sharing.

Portable Cribs

If you’re only planning to practice co-sleeping temporarily, a collapsible, portable crib might be the solution to your problems. Easy to assemble and lightweight, you can move the crib from one room to another as needed with relative ease. There are weight limits specific to each model, so you’ll want to be sure that your baby hasn’t’ outgrown his. Also, it’s important to be sure that each re-assembly is completed according to the manufacturer’s instruction and presents no pinching, choking or other hazards.

Bassinets and Cradles

While a cradle isn’t collapsible like a portable crib, it is lightweight and easy to move from one room to the next as the need arises. It’s not advised that children who are old enough to sit independently sleep in cradles or bassinets, but they can be ideal for parents of newborns who only plan to co-sleep through their child’s early infancy.

My 15 Fave She-Shed Designs and Why I love them

she shed00

Scrolling through my Facebook Feed one morning, I noticed a friend post an article about the proliferation of “She-Sheds” around the country as the answer to the “Man Cave.” I squealed with delight and went on a Pinterest journey to find my faves. I have a Shed in our Backyard with a lawnmower and tools that I certainly can find another home for…um somewhere. Ha!

Here are my faves including this award winning one above which look like a quaint, cozy and serene escape pod. My other faves:

Who-says-She-Sheds-have-made-wood-glass

I love this shed because it has a Moroccan feel to it and it’s cool too because it’s not actually a shed but a tent with mosquito net around it.  That is great for those who do not have a real shed to convert. The only issue is that you’d have to pack up the pillows and upholstery at the end of the day to protect them from dust, moisture and rain.

she shed45

I like the simplicity of this Shed, the dark flooring contrasted with the white walls give it an extra cozy feel and the red velour increases the intimacy of the room. Simple decorations and a few candles are enough. I’m a minimalist and too much decorations would make me feel too claustrophobic in an already small space.

backyard-office-sheds-20

The glass doors in this shed opens the room and expands it some. This shed also makes it possible for mom to escape with a magazine while still keeping an eye on her kids perhaps running around in the yard playing. I also like the simple decorations and all white furniture means “no greasy husbands or messy kids allowed”.

backyard-office-sheds-05

The light wood panel of this shed combined with the glass opens up this space even more. It lets the owner bring in the light and nature around the shed while chilling and getting away. The track lighting makes this shed a great place to escape too even in the evening hours.

This shed also has a North African feel to it. I love the multitude of colors right down to the fact the doors and exterior are painted a serene blue. It’s warm and inviting, but not too inviting, this is a sanctuary after all.

backyard-office-sheds-04

This shed is for the woman who wants to craft in piece. Whether she is putting together necklaces for vending at the local flea market or her online Etsy shop, this is a great space for getting work done while escaping.

Shed-Two

I love the arched cutaway and day bed in this shed. It has almost a cocoon feel to it. I could see myself napping in here for at least an hour because Lord knows your kids won’t let you get away for too long.

she-sheds-11

This she shed inside has a Victorian feel while a natural rustic feel outside. It’s a great secret hideaway that could camouflage in the yard. The colored doors offer that spark of brightness that could lift the mood as well.

she-sheds-09

I really dig the 1950s diner look to this she-shed. It’s playful and bright. This she-shed is large enough to invite friends over for brunch or drinks and conversation. It doesn’t always have to be a space for you alone. Guys have the boys over for games at their Man Caves all the time. Add a TV and you could have little watch parties yourself in here.

she-sheds-07

I adore the Shabby Chic decor of this shed. The White interior and Exterior walls are puritanical, dainty, feminine and soft. I could enjoy noon tea or get away and do some knitting or crocheting back here…that is if I had the skill to knit or crochet that is.

she-sheds-06

What is not to love about a shed on the beach. I don’t know what else I could say about an oasis on an oasis. This is ideal if you have your own private beach to your vacation home. In between dips in the sea, you can avoid getting sunburned laying out by retreating into your shed an taking a nap bathed by sea breeze. Aaaah!

she-sheds-12

How serene and luxurious is this divine get-a-way nook!?! You could chill with your magazines, nosh on some snacks and or lose yourself in a good book in this cozy space. The red, pink and yellow decor warms up the space as well.

she-sheds-03

This barrel shaped shed is unique and quaint as the funky wall paper and round cushion ottomans inside. This is another space with ample room to accommodate visitors. Heck, I’d even let the kids visit me in this one for a reading hour. Or we could play board games or assemble a craft project or something in here. Nice.

For that gardener who wants to be nestled among the greenery and her hard work, comes this cottage space. With the table and bench, you could enjoy breakfast or write letters and notes in here. Like who does those things anymore. You can if you had a marvelous spot like this to do it in.

Columnist begs parents to Quit it with Odd Spellings of Common Baby Names

paul name

Are you one of those parents who, when deciding on a name for your baby before he or she was born, wanted something very unique?

So even though you liked “Madison” as a name, you decided to help her stand out by spelling it “Madicyn” or like “Madyson” or “Madisyn”

Or are you that parent who skipped on the tradition spelling of Brittney and opted for “Brittny”, “Brittneigh”, “Brit’nee”, “Britany” or “Bryttney”?

Maybe, Chase was too blah so you opted for “Chace” or “Chayce”?

Caden too? Boring. How about “Kaden” or “Kaeden”, “Caidyn” or “Cayden”?

Turn a simple biblical name like Isaiah on its head and you’ve got” Isah”, “Isaieh”, “Isaah” or “Izaiah”

A couple of the Kardashians are named Khloe instead of Chloe and Kourtney instead of Courtney because their parents wanted all the first names to start with the first letter of their last name.

khloe and kourt host

Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian

It’s cute, but did you take it one step further and turned Chloe into “Kloey”?

Flip Jacqueline around and you’ve got “Jaq’leen”.

Speaking of parenthesis and hyphens.

One New York City teacher listed the most unique names she had ever come across on her roster:

breathing-hurts-gif
Somaily (Sa miley), Dimmamelle (Dimel), Joedan (Jordan), Sha-Niyhah (Shania), Jerleek,  Shaqueena and Marqwell. She called them HR nightmare names. Pity that is coming from a teacher though.

These are the unique names that author and New York Times columnist Paul Schmidtberger complained about in a May 7, 2010 piece.

In it he writes that “parents shouldn’t impose cryptic, incoherent or foolish spellings on their own children, nor on society as a whole.”

Schmidtberger goes on to say parents will “condemn their children to a lifetime of bleakly repeating that, no, the name in question is spelled “Shaiyahne” not “Cheyenne.”

Sounds a bit curmudgeonly to me.  But I say this as a person with an African name Jeneba that I always have had  to repeat, carefully spell and correct people’s punctuation of, most of my life. My husband who is named Dave and not David has to constantly tell people that no he wasn’t just giving them a nickname when he told them his name.

Yet, our first kid, who we named Caleb, is not pronounced like the traditional way but slightly different. You’d think we had learned a lesson from what we went thru growing up always correcting folks. ha!

We just liked the name but didn’t care for going with Caleb with a K because we just didn’t want to. Really it was right after 9/11 and didn’t want him to accidentally end up on a no-fly list.

But what’s it to anyone, really?

However, does Schmidtberger have a point? Should parents stick with the traditional spelling of names?

“Misspelling a child’s name won’t make Junior special, creative or unique,” the New Jersey native writes.” Y’s and I’s are not interchangeable, and apostrophes are not some sort of newfangled confetti to be sprinkled liberally throughout groups of letters.”

Does he have a point or is just being a male Debbie Downer? Sound off in the comment section below.

Behind-the-Scenes at Tamera Mowry-Housley’s ‘American Baby’ Cover Shoot

american baby mowry 5

This Friday, American Baby released its July issue featuring on the cover The Real TV host Tamera Mowry-Housley who is expecting her second child, a daughter, this July.

Last week in advance of the release, Mowry-Housley took readers of her blog  behind the scenes of the cover photo shoot.

About the experience, she writes:

I couldn’t have been happier with the shoot day. I got to get all dolled up (I feel so sexy and powerful during pregnancy), loved working with their team (they made me so comfortable), and shared about what being a parent is really all about. I touched on some of what having Aden has taught me in my Mother’s Day post, but dove a little deeper in the magazine’s piece

Nice. Check out the article in the online or traditional version of the magazine. She, her husband FOX news correspondent Adam Housley and their two and a half year old son Aden will welcome the new addition next month in July.

Two of the Historic Thompson Sextuplets Head to College

thompson sextuplets

Two of the historic Thompson sextuplets graduated from High School Friday and are headed to Howard University in the Fall.

About 18 years ago,  Linden and Jacqueline Thompson made world history when they delivered the first set of sextuplets on May 8. Sadly, one died but still they became the first set of Black sextuplets born in the United States: Emily, Richard, Octavia, Stella and Ann-Marie.

It was also historic because then, they were the first natural (born without fertility treatment or in vitro fertilization) sextuplet pregnancy and the longest sextuplet pregnancy in the United States — more than seven months.

The amazing birth barely made national headlines until 6 months later an Iowan family welcomed the first surviving set of septuplets:  Kelsey, Alexis, Brandon, Natalie, Kenny Jr., Joel and Nathan.  Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey and their miracle babies  got tons of national attention, were showered with gifts and appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show. The media continued to cover them through each milestone and they appeared on the Oprah Winfrey network last year when they all turned 17.

If it wasn’t for all the attention The McCaugheys got, there wouldn’t have been the protests and rallying of activists to also give support and gifts to the Thompson Sextuplets. In the DC area, Jessica Avor, then 16-years old, saw a newspaper article on the disparity in treatment and organized a massive drive which helped secure strollers, diapers and even a van for the family. Only then was the Thompson given mainstream media attention.

That attention led to Howard University giving the sextuplets a full scholarship when they graduated from High School. Now that Stella Thomson and Ann-Marie have graduated from DC’s Hospitality High School, they are heading to Howard in the Fall.  The remaining three will graduate next year.

Stella told the local news channel that she wants to be a veterinarian.

The two local stories we found are among very few news coverage about them and even those two were told from the perspective of the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania young woman who organized the first drive.

Summer: ‘Camp Mom’ tips for Work-at-Home Moms

camp mom2

If you are like me and other work at home moms out there, you kind of dread Summer a bit because it means you will be responsible for keeping your children busy, entertained and intellectually stimulated so they don’t have too much Summer brain drain. You will have to do all that while managing your work obligations. Oy vey!

Many send their children to summer camps but a lot of camps only operate on a week or two-week increments and they can get very costly. To ease the challenge, it is a good idea to establish a strict schedule that includes work time, play time, and other activities in between. Without a routine, your work or project obligations can suffer and you risk having your kids play video games and watch TV all day.

Here are some suggestions of activities I came up with:

  • Use the morning to institute some reading or math drills time.
  • If you live near a library, use its facilities and take advantage of their summer reading challenges.
  • Go to the craft or dollar store and pick up supplies and incorporate an hour on some days for crafts.
  • Use card or board games for non-electronics hours.
  • Do outdoor activities close to home like make visits to the local park. My middle kid, who is a nature and animal lover, enjoys heading down to our town creek and exploring the dragonflies and frogs. My eldest likes riding his bike around the block and my youngest enjoys playing make-believe with her My Little Pony toys in the front yard.
  • Tack on active play time as well. Take a trip to a local tennis or basketball court. Toss the softball in the backyard. We go on a half mile loop in our town and stop periodically to do jumping jacks, burpees, situps and pushups in the evening. It’s a great way to stave off the summer excess weight gain as well.
  • Plan trips to the beach at least once during the summer.
  • Incorporate treks to the pool on a twice a week basis if you can.
  • If the budget allows, family visits to the roller rink, go cart track or cultural museums are other things you can do.

Here is the schedule I created for myself and hope to follow stringently. I’ve tried to allocate enough time in between for transitioning from activity to activity and made sure I put in ample time to work. You are free to use it to specialize your own schedule. Good luck and have fun!
