Back-to-School Checklist: 5 things you need to Do Soon!

As summer winds to a close, parents are scrambling to get school supplies, do last minute shopping and scheduling hair appointments and hair cuts for their little ones.  But there are other tasks that are less tangible but are key to a successful school here.
Here is a list of things to get set, regulated or purchased before or during the first few days of the new school year.

1.       Whip Your Immune System into Shape Schools are hot beds for illness- especially during the first few days of the school-year. Make sure your children are current on all their important vaccinations to protect them as flu season begins.
Do it the natural way: Eat foods high in vitamin C. According to Dr. DeSilva, of Amazon Origins, “foods high in Vitamin C provide help the body produce Collagen, which promotes the body’s natural healing process.”
– Foods with the highest Vitamin C levels? Camu Camu berries, Red/Green peppers, and Guavas.

2.       Visit the Eye Doctor According to Vision Council of America, “One in four American children has an uncorrected vision issue.. [and] more than 10 million children suffer from vision problems that may cause them to fail in school.”
With statistics like these, it’s important to visit an eye doctor, so that problems with you and your children’s vision can be detected in its early stages. Ophthalmologist Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler also adds, “It’s important to correct these issues, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, before they create more serious complications such as difficulty learning or the development of recurrent headaches.”

3.       Update Emergency and Medical contact Information

In the event of an emergency, finding necessary contact information could be the difference between a small problem and a huge disaster. Here is a free template.

4.        Retrain Your Sleep Cycle Make waking up early for school a little less dreadful by training your body to wake up at the time you’re supposed to. While you may still need the boost of an alarm clock, not taking naps throughout the day, avoiding nightlights, and even trying melatonin (consult with your doctor) can help you get, and stick to your school sleep schedule.

5.       Get Organized  Getting organized ahead of time can save you time, but it can also save you money and potential stressful situations. Anticipate things you will need ahead of time. Things like outfits, lunches, and school/office can all be prepared the night before you need them, leaving you with significantly less stress in the morning.

 Good luck!

2014 Primetime Emmy Awards Red Carpet: Celebrity Moms glam it up

The stars were out last night at the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on August 25, 2014 in Los Angeles, California.
We were on the look out for some of the celebrity moms and moms-to-be that we’ve featured on the blog before and certainly they did not disappoint:
Kerry Washington rocked  an orange Prada dress with intricate crystals embroidered within with matching Prada clutch and fab Fred Leighton jewels.  Washington, who had her first child earlier this year, was nominated for an Outstanding actress award for her role on ABC‘s Scandal.
Giuliana Rancic went old Hollywood glam in this stately crimson Gustavo Cadile dress, worn with Christian Louboutin heels and Forevermark diamonds jewels.
Gwen Stefani did not walk the red carpet, still was shimmering in the halls in a silver Atelier Versace Fall 2014 top and long skirt with metallic ornaments at the neckline. Very rock and roll and futuristic, yes?
Nashville star and mom-to-be Hayden Panettiere was radiant and glowing in a floor length Lorena Sarbu  gown from her Fall 2014 collection, accented with Fred Leighton earrings and a dainty diamond bracelet, set off with nude make up and a diamond encrusted headband. Gorgeous!
Halle Berry  also skipped the early arrivals red carpet even though she presented the last award for the night. She looked stunning as usual in this high-slit flowing feminine Elie Saab gown, posing  in the press toom. Very nice!
Love Love Brazillian model Camila Alves in my fave North African designer Zuhair Murad gown from his 2014 Resort collection. Beautiful with this white Aldo clutch and a pair of Brian Atwood ‘Hamper’ heels to finish off the perfect look. Saucy! Is one word to describe Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara who stunned in a body hugging Roberto Cavalli dress, while dripping in Lorraine Schwartz  jewels. Fab! Her show tied Fraisier with its 5 consecutive comedy show Emmy wins.

Pleasantly surprised to see Heidi Klum tame her usual over-the-topness this year as she graced the red carpet in Zac Posen resort 2015 dress, accessorized with a Jimmy Choo ‘Tube’ clutch with matching Jimmy Choo ‘Xenia’ sandals and and accented with delicate Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Love the deep waves. The Project Runway  creator did well tonight.
Claire Danes went for the pop of color in Givenchy from the designer’s Fall 2014 collection. She wore Lorraine Schwartz pieces to complete the look. Very pretty and feminine. The star is a multi-Emmy winner for her role on Showtime’s Homeland and was nominated last night as well.
Hardly recognized this super svelte Julianna Margulies in this sleek Narcisco Rodgriguez gown and leather clutch. We heard FD Gallery set her up with a 13.26 carat old mine cut diamond earrings and a 7 carat rose cut Hemmerle ring. Wowza! Love the up swept do and the black headband. Simple. Classic.  Margulies won last night the Outstanding Actress award for her role on the hit NBC drama The Good Wife.  Congrats!
How cute was Julia Roberts in a playful and youthful  Elie Saab Fall 2014 Couture mini dress with its bold beading and sexy plunging neckline? Roberts won big tonight, having many nominations and an Emmy for her role in The Normal Heart.  Loving the peep-toe pumps by Christian Louboutin. She accented the look with Irene Neuwirth jewels. Winning!
Nominated for her role in Return to Zero Lifetime mini-series, Minnie Driver was outfitted in the designs of another bumpwatch alum Marchesa. Very cute look pulled off with  Stuart Weitzman shoes,  Fred Leighton jewels and a Rauwolf clutch. Loved her since Good Will Hunting!
Padma Lakshmi  was fierce in a Ralph Rucci couture gown. The Top Chef award-winning show host donned a pair of classic Manolo Blahnik heels and also went with Fred Leighton ring and earrings, and a Judith Leiber bag. Marvelous!
One of our original features on celeb moms of twins included this gorgeous woman  Angela Bassett, nominated for her Outstanding actress for her role on the mini-series  American Horror Story was fab in this Grecian wrap Elisabetta Franchi dress, accented with an Oroton”Freize” clutch.

Back to School: 10 ways to get kids to share the bathroom

When you have more kids than bathrooms, you will eventually run into trouble, unless you are one of the lucky few parents who have already established some ground rules and bathroom sharing etiquette. Don’t despair; there are some simple things you can do to make bathroom sharing less challenging and more peaceful. Read on, for some suggestions.
  1.     Consolidate activities when possible – Depending on the ages and genders of your children it may be possible to consolidate some bathroom activities without giving up too much privacy. If you have older kids, talk with them about some of the concessions they would be willing to make for one another.
  2.     Make a schedule – Perhaps a bathroom schedule would work for your family. Each child could be assigned a time slot and they would have to get all their bathroom things done within that time slot.
  3.     Limit bathroom activities – Some activities that take place in the bathroom can be done elsewhere. For example, putting on make up doesn’t need to happen in the bathroom; hair can be groomed in the bedroom.
  4.     Create a space for grooming – Consider putting a nice vanity in the girls’ room. Making space in the bedrooms and providing necessary accoutrements could actually make older kids less likely to spend unnecessary time primping and preening in front of the bathroom mirror.
  5.     Use a timer – Putting reasonable time limits on bathroom use is another way to get kids to share. The timer can be set according to what needs to happen. Parents will still need to monitor the timer to make sure there is no cheating.
  6.     Reward good behavior – Sometimes just rewarding desired behavior is enough to reinforce it. Praising your kids for sharing the bathroom peacefully may be all that’s needed. Kids thrive on praise and attention, and they will repeat behaviors to solicit more of it.
  7.     Teach consideration – Don’t just assume your kids will share or not share the bathroom on their own. Just as you need to teach your kids manners, you will need to teach them to be considerate of one another’s bathroom time. Teaching them consideration in this area will probably spill over into other areas as well.
  8.     Create consequences for not sharing peacefully – Chances are, if your kids find out that fighting over bathroom time results in spending quality time in the bathroom – cleaning it – they will decide to share quietly. Creating consequences for undesirable behavior may work for getting the kids to think twice before they start the bathroom wars.
  9.     Alternate bath and shower times– Bedtime baths and good morning showers is one way to keep some peace around the bathroom. Those who like to bathe and younger kids who are yet using the shower can bathe at night before bed while those who prefer to shower can do so in the morning, since it takes less time.
  10.     Enforce the bathroom rules you create – In order to maintain the peace, you will need to be strict about enforcing any rules that are established around bathroom time. Being lax in sticking to the rules will eventually lead back to chaos and bathroom wars.

10 Things Your Fall Maternity Wardrobe must Include

This fall, as you shop for your wardrobe for essentials to last you through the season whilst carrying a baby while pregnant or as a new mom, keep in mind some of these basic pieces.
If you start your capsule collection in your wardrobe with these key wardrobe items, you will be well on your way to establishing a foundation of basics and can go from there.

1. Black Dress – The classic black dress comes in maternity styles and is a perfect thing to wear for a variety of outings, date nights, corporate parties, concerts and more!

2. Wrap dress – A wrap dress is THE best option, especially in black, for any event. It works well in casual, after 5 or more formal occasions. Use accessories and shoes to make it appropriate.

3. Fitted Suit –  Even if you cannot find a suit tailored to your belly, a blazer that fits on the shoulders but is tapered at the waist and a matching pair of maternity slacks will do. It’s not easy to wear a traditional suit with extra belly, but it can be done.

4. White Collared Button Down Shirt  – Every woman must own a white button down collar shirt in her wardrobe. A crisp shirt is great for the office or weekend.

ShopStyle

5. Silk Scarf – A colorful silk scarf will add the spark of flavor and style to a monochromatic or otherwise vanilla outfit.

6. Khaki pants – Khaki pants can complement a variety of tops and are casual but can still be pulled of at more formal events or venues if paired with some pears or a twin set.

7. A Tote – A staple for any woman whether she is preggers or not is a handbag tote that can fit all of her essentials and then some. These can double as a diaper bag too if necessary and are more stylish than typical diaper bags.

8. Bulky Sweater – A bulky sweater is your friend when the temperature drops and even if you are going into venues with the air conditioning still blasting. Get them in dark colors that can complement whatever you are wearing.

9. Diamond Studs – Classic studs can be dressed up or down and if you are toting around an infant, she won’t yank them out your ear as she would a pair of hoops.

10. Stretchable Boots – that can expand as your calves grown and that have more give so it is not too constraining and tough on your circulation

Back to School: 10 Apps that can Help with Homework

Once upon a time, kids who needed homework help had only their parents or caregivers to turn to. In today’s high-tech world, however, that’s all changed. Because a staggering number of modern kids have the power of an iPhone in their pocket, there’s a world of virtual tutoring programs available at their fingertips. Check out these 10 homework helper apps that can help kids manage and complete their assignments.
  1. iHomework – One of the most important things a homework-dedicated iPhone app can help kids do is to remember their assignments in the first place, and iHomework doesn’t disappoint. At only $0.99 in the App Store, this useful application allows students to keep track of their assignments for each class, manage projects, and stay on top of due dates for those assignments.
  2. FlashCards++ – Because this $3.99 app allows kids or parents to create their own flashcards for study purposes, this app can help kids from kindergarten to senior year study and retain information. Any area that your kids need coaching and special attention in can be managed with FlashCards++, and your created cards can be backed up with Dropbox to prevent data loss.
  3. Grammar Guide – When kids get old enough to start writing papers and book reports, teachers begin expecting correct grammar and composition, as well as an understanding of the covered material. With Grammar Guide, you can put a powerful reference tool in your kids’ hands, allowing them to look up anything they’re not sure about on the spot. Put an end to essays covered in red marks!
  4. Spelling Tutor – Younger kids can practice their spelling on the go using your iPhone if they don’t have their own with this $0.99 app that makes studying spelling fun. Create your own lists to correspond with those that are currently being covered in class as a study aid for your youngsters, and watch them become spelling bee champs.
  5. The Chemical Touch Lite – For kids learning the Periodic Table of Elements, The Chemical Touch Lite will be a lifesaver. The app maker says “Sometimes all you need is simply a periodic table.” Students will agree he got that right!
  6. Free Graphing Calculator – Graphing calculators are certainly not cheap, and they only have one use. This free app turns your child’s iPhone into a graphing calculator which, while still pricey, will at least allow you to keep in touch with them as well as help them complete their math homework.
  7. myHomework – A free app for managing assignments and test dates, myHomework is another that provides the very essential assistance of reminding kids that they have homework in the first place. The app can be used on either the iPhone or the iPad, and can also sync with the dedicated website to allow desktop access as well mobile management.
  8. iStudiez Pro – Not only does iStudiez allow your child to manage their homework assignments and class schedules, it also makes monitoring and tracking grade point averages and alerts easy. High school kids in advanced placement classes with high academic goals will definitely benefit from this app, which is directed largely at students on the collegiate level but can be easily adapted for high school users.
  9. Dictionary.com – Dictionary & Thesaurus – Recommended by Time Magazine, CNET and Apple themselves, the Dictionary.com app puts a comprehensive and exhaustive dictionary in your child’s pocket. In addition to the standard definition and proper usage information, this $2.99 app also provides audio pronunciation assistance and allows kids to shake their phone for random words, which is a powerful vocabulary-building tool.
  10. Mathemagics – Easy Algebra Fast – Mastering algebra is no easy feat, but this $0.99 app helps kids do just that. Helping kids learn to solve equations quickly, Mathemagics is like having an algebra tutor in your child’s back pocket. Practicing and accessing lessons, preparing for standardized tests, and getting top grades in algebra can all be accomplished with the combination of this one app and a bit of dedication.
