Empowering girls helps reduce teen pregnancy

When  Oklahoma mom Shana Davis was in high school, 17 of the 35 kids in her graduating class were teen parents.

Davis, who attended the Cherokee County Teen Pregnancy Task Force this past Thursday night, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma said she did not want to become one of the 36-year-old grandmothers she saw growing up and be trapped in her county for life.

“I knew at a young age if I put myself in those risky behaviors, I’d be in that county forever,” Davis said. “I was determined to have more for myself.”

The takeaway from the session as summarized by The Tahlequahdaily Press:

When teens understand they have choices beyond high school they make better decisions when it comes to sex. Parents who talk to their children before they become pre-teens and teens, establishing a relationship of communication and understanding, seem to be a major factor in the success of a youth making good choices.

Empowering teens is one way to help reduce the epidemic of teen pregnancy.

Of course, sometimes parents want their kids educated but are not prepared to give answers.

Another attendee community nurse Rebekah Craig’s 11-year old son came home one day asking what “chlamydia” was. He had heard the term in the hall at school.

“It wasn’t a conversation I wanted to have on a Tuesday night,” Craig said. “But it was a teachable moment. So we talked about it.” Fortunately, Craig was educated in medial technology and had plenty tools.

Even though the focus was on empowering teen, the session was also  for parents who, like Davis,do not want to raise grandchildren while still relatively young themselves.

“It’s a lot of stress and energy to raise a grandchild or great-grandchild, and it effects it whole community,” another attendee, Wauneta Duvall said. “I see a lot of people doing that.”

Barbara Williams,  a preventionist with Cherokee Nation Behavorial Health said her mother didn’t tell her anything about sex, adding that her mom’s mom “didn’t tell her anything.”

In her sex-ed and teen prevention program, Williams said what the teens want to know and what their parents want to know are two different things.

She works to help parents talk to their teens with a goal to develop mature, goal-oriented teens, interested in college instead of boyfriends, burdened with babies.

7 Natural Cures for Morning Sickness

There are some natural remedies and solutions for pregnant women who may not want to take prescription medicines to control vomiting, nausea and other symptoms of early pregnancy. Here are 7 stand out ones.

  1. Ginger  -is well-known for its nausea reducing qualities, and many women have had success with ginger tea for relieving their morning sickness. The crystallized packets that are made in Asian countries and sold in international food stores are yummy because they are pungent and already sweetened.
  2. Peppermint – You can drink it in the tea or take it in tablet of sugar-free candy form.
  3. Fennel seeds – These natural seeds, sold in health food stores, are great for easing queasiness. Just shake a few in your hand and chew. You can also add a few dashes to your tea.
  4. Slippery Elm – You can take this natural herb, sold at health food stores, to calm your tummy.
  5. Almonds  – Eating a few of these at a time has been known to ease morning sickness. Almonds give you protein and are also one of the Superfoods. They’ve been linked to diabetes, cholesterol and inflammation control.
  6. Papaya -This fruit can help you deal with nausea.
  7. Pineapple – The tartnesss of this fruit may assist in dealing with morning sickness, but be careful the acidity in this fruit could have an averse affect with the food already in your tummy.

Good luck to staving off that morning sickness.

2014 Grammy Red Carpet, On Stage & Behind-the-Scenes (PHOTOS)

Last night, the biggest names in music hit the red carpet to the Staples Center in Los Angeles,California on January 26 for the 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards and celebration. We took to Grammy’s mobile app to live Instagram and share some of the Red Carpet, On Stage and Behind-the-Scenes imagery and photos of the night, starring many of the moms current and past that we’ve “bumpwatched.” We start with Alicia Keys who looked stunning in an electric blue plunging Armani Prive dress with hubby Swizz Beatz.
Beyonce won the night in this lace curve-hugging Michael Costello fish tail dress with  Lorraine Schwartz jewels and Christian Louboutin heels.

Another relatively new mom, Amber Rose, looked amaze in a gorge gold Naeem Khan floor length curve-hugging dress.

Another one of our pretty new  moms Anna Faris looked amazing in this midnight blue Fitranni dress with a slight train.

Ciara rocked her bump in a shimmery bronze floor-length Emilio Pucci gown.

Giuliana Rancic made the BEST dressed list with this crimson lace overlay Alex Perry resort 2014 dress and Marina B jewls. Gorg!

Tamar Braxton-Herbert just had her son last year and looks smoking hot in a fire-engine red Michael Costello dress while posing with hubby Vince Herbert.

P!nk accompanied hubby Carey Hart while showing off her toned bod in a red Johanna Johnson dress.

Sweet. Erica Campbell of the group Mary Mary had her daughter for her date last night while wearing a two piece lace top and skirt. It was a modest and approporiate look considering all the hoopla over her solo album cover.

Madonna and son David did the 20s zoot suit styling by Ralph Lauren

Fantasia Barino
went with a neutral-toned slip dress with a red halter strap under a black lace see-through dress with crimson lip and a cute bowl pixie cut. Confusing look.

Also rocking her new pixie cut was Jennifer Hudson, who didn’t go to the Grammys but was spotted on the red carpet to Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy party that occurs the night before the Grammys at the famed Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills. Jennifer Hudson wore a  colorful Christopher Kane dress.

At that same event was actress Paula Patton in a crimson Mireille Dagher Couture fall 2014 lace mini dress with a plunging neckline, worn with Louboutin pumps and David Yurman jewels.

Pink’s aerial performance has become an anticipated breath of fresh air for award shows. She’s done it a few times before and stuns audiences each time.

Look at that strength and balance. Amazing.

The night opened with a saucy solo and duet by Beyonce and Jay Z performing Bey’s song Drunk In Love off her latest self-titled 5th solo studio album. The outfit was by Nichole de Carle which was accented with Saint Laurent tights,  Stuart Weitzman Mary Jane dance shoes, a La Perla Collar, and custom bra, and Jennifer Fisher jewelry Jay wore a Tom Ford  tux.
Academy-Award nominee Julia Roberts was a presenter.

Producer of the Year Grammy winner Pharrell Williams was the talk of the show with his interesting forest ranger hat, seen here cutting up with Jay and Bey backstage.

And again with another pop star royal couple Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz.

DEBUNKED: “Half Caste” website selling white men’s sperm to single African women is a scam!

EXPOSED!! DEBUNKED!
Here is another EXCELLENT example of why you cannot believe everything you see or read on the Internet, especially if you are a journalist.
I was scrolling through one of my Facebook friend’s timelines tonight when I stopped at a photo and story about a new organization called Half-Caste World which is attempting to create a new generation of one race, and bridge Africa  and the West. To do this, the Ghanaian-based company is promising to help African mothers get sperm from white men so they can give birth to a biracial baby.
It recruits clients via a  Facebook page and website: http://www.halfcastebabies.com/
To promote the service, the Half Caste Babies website includes the above row of images which would lead the average visitor to believe these are clients holding their half-caste babies produced through the service.
One popular Ghanaian site, Infoboxx, wrote on the story but unfortunately reported as if it was a booming and thriving business, already.
HOTCAKE: Half-Caste Baby Business Booming In Ghana. Got $3000?”  is the headline which sent many visitors into a frenzy commenting and sharing the story on their personal  Facebook pages. The comments under the story dealt with race, pride, colonialism and other deep and complex topics.
Infoboxx wrote that in its investigations it discovered that a man named Augustine N.K. Boateng, a graduate of Morocco’s University Mohammed Premier is behind the 4-month old company, based in Accra, Ghana and promises to provide semen for $3,000 to its target: single African women.
Women who get the sperm are to inseminate it themselves at home.
But before declaring it as a booming business in the headline, Infoboxx could quickly have ascertained the truth by investigating the images on the website alone.
Heck, upon discovering that owner admitted the company is only 4-months old should be sufficient to note that the photos and claims of real clients are all fraudulent. It still takes 9 months to make a baby. duh.
Anyway, because I’ve covered baby-related stories for over 6 years now, I’ve seen it all and quickly ascertained the source of most of the images on the site.

The first two photos are stories of African couples who gave natural birth to light or albino babies with blonde hair who looked white. We reported in 2010 on the second couple:  a Nigerian husband and wife, Ben and Angela, from London who gave birth to very light almost albino daughter who looks white but is their birth child.

The third photo is actress Garcelle Beauvais who is holding one of her twins, Jax . She gave birth to him and his brother Jaid in 2007. The image is a 2009 photo of Beauvais and her son featured on Babble.com

EDITED TO ADD:  The site has taken down the photo of Garcelle, further PROOF that it’s one big SCAM!

The fourth photo is  American NFL player DeMarcus Ware and his wife Taniqua with a baby they adopted in America in 2008.

The last one was probably also stolen off of Google images too and most likely is the child of a natural-born baby or adopted one, not a client of this Half-Caste company.

Upon discovering this, it looks as though the images of the babies that scroll through on the site most likely are of people’s children that the site downloaded off the web. None is a client or product of clients as portrayed.
How unethical, dangerous, unhealthy and disastrous. Beware of the scam online, people. Stories like this one is why people have to be really cautious of the photos of their children they share online in public.
A little Google search and a healthy dose of skepticism will spare us all from scam artists like this.

Surrogate pregnancy ban in Kansas proposed

A Kansas lawmaker will introduce a bill that would ban surrogate pregnancy in that state.

Sen. Mary Pilcher-Cook, a Shawnee Republican who leads the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee, said her bill would be similar to the ban on surrogate pregnancy in the  District of Columbia.
“Currently in Kansas, there are no laws regarding surrogacy,” she told The Topeka Capitol-Journal. “I’d like the committee to take a look at that.”
DC forbids Surrogte contracts and imposes prison sentences and fines for those who try to circumvent the laws.

New Book: Celebrities having babies in 40s fool average women on pregnancy odds

Don’t let all these celebrities having babies in their 40s fool you into thinking you’ll be able to easily get pregnant.
That is the message author Tanya Selvaratham relays in her new book “The Big Lie: Motherhood, Feminism and the Reality of the Biological Clock”
In a recent CNN review of her book, Selvaratham says older celeb moms like Halle Berry, Tina Fey, Nia Long, Julianne Moore, Kelly Preston,  Uma Thurman  and others have average women thinking having babies in their mid to late 40s may be easy.
“We see celebrities having kids seemingly without any problems and we have no idea what they went through,” Selvaratham says. “We see the end result, but not the struggle.”
Forty may be the new 30, but our ovaries have not gotten the same makeover, CNN notes. Even with all the advances in reproductive technology, our eggs have a finite shelf life and the odds of having a child over 40 years old are shockingly slim.
Yet, because of women delaying the start of their families and other reasons, there are more childless women in the US than in year’s past. In 1976, one in 10 woman between ages 40 and 44 was childless. By 2006, that numbered doubled to one in 5, according to the U.S. Census.
The book may also have been driven by the author’s own fertility struggles which took a toll on her marriage.
It seems Selvaratham’s doctor may be part to blame for her troubles. After suffering her first miscarriage at 37, Selvaratham’s doc told her she still had time to conceive, influencing her decision to delay trying again until later. She learned later the delay in time probably made it harder.
According to the Southern California Center for Reproductive Medicine, a woman in her 20s has a 20-25% chance of conceiving naturally per menstrual cycle. In her early 30s, the chance of pregnancy is 15% per cycle. After 35, the odds of pregnancy without medical intervention are at 10%. After 40, that number falls to 5%, and women over 45 have a 1% chance of conception.
Interesting. Your thoughts?

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for the Expectant Mom

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, this is the perfect opportunity to show the mom to be in your life some love! Just a kind card or letter to let them know you are thinking about them is great, but a personalized gift is a great way to support a lady who may be experiencing lots of aches and pains.
One gift idea that’s great for any mom to be is a relaxation basket. Simply purchase a good size basket and then fill it with all her favorite goodies. Perhaps fill it with her favorite bubble bath, sweet smelling lotion and super soft socks. Pick out a new book or a favorite magazine and her favorite candy treat to place in as well. If she is not much of a reader, choose a DVD and maybe some popcorn and a soda.
If a gift certificate is in your budget, you might include a spa day. Many spas offer maternity massages and this is a great gift for an expecting mother over fifteen weeks.

If a gift certificate is not in the budget, opt for making your own coupon book filled with free foot massages or a “duty free” night so she can relax in her own tub while you pick up the slack.

The key to any of these gifts is personalization. Choose items that you know she enjoys and that will help her to relax and enjoy the holiday.
Another sweet idea is to give a gift to the mom from the new baby. Maybe include a sonogram picture on a card and include the caption “You are “heads down” the best Mommy around” Love, Baby’s name. Maybe include a small basket of goodies that are from the baby such as some snacks she has been craving since being pregnant or a children’s book about a mommy and baby with a personal inscription on the inside.
Whatever gifts you decide on, this mom to be is sure to feel the love and enjoy her Valentine’s Day!
