The Middle Age Women Fashion No-No Rules I break

I was surfing the web the other day and came upon this article with a slide show that declared 20 items of clothing that women in midlife should not wear.

Since at my age, I am decidedly middle aged I clicked the link thinking I’d see stuff like Mickey Mouse ears, mini back packs that Harajuku girls wear and other very child-like things. Nope! There were quite a few items on the list that I actually wear and think I look good in them. I feel good in them and think they are age appropriate the way I put them together.

I counted and on that list of 20 that included overalls, stilettos, and sill socks, all items that in my opinion could be rocked by a middle aged woman. Here are 8  items from that list of 12 items I wear from that roster of 20 things I’m not supposed to wear at my age.

Mini skirts. If you are in  your late 30s and early 40s, you most certainly can wear a mini skirt! Pair it with a nice feminine blouse like I did in this photo above I shared on Instagram.

Yoga pants – I mean what else are women in their 40s supposed to wear to work out if they cannot wear spandex or yoga pants. The person who put the list together is either out of shape or a man. Photo Source.

Layered Jewelry– Statement jewelry, even when worn simultaneously can make an ordinary outfit stand out and are conversation starters. I’m never afraid of wearing a many bracelets, rings and more. I’ve worn them here and here and here and here.

Leopard print or Fatigues – There is nothing wrong with prints so long as they flatter your body and shape.

Cropped Tops- Now this style isn’t hard to pull off for anyone but you can easily wear one overtop a shirt and make it work. I blogged about ways to rock it here and you would not look silly either.

Graphic Tees– I do not understand why it would be too young for a woman in her 40s to wear a t-shirt with a fun saying. I really don’t get it. I’ve been rocking graphic tees for years. I sell them in my MomCharmStore linked to this blog!

Cleavage  – Why not? Are women in their 40s and 50s not allow to exhibit sex appeal?

Big Bag – Large totes are great for carrying all your stuff and who has more stuff than mature women. I rock my big bags and I am a big fan of totes!

Make Up Tips for Nights Out, Indian Brides and More

Sponsored Post

Because a large part of my audience includes readers in India, I’m sharing some awesome tips from India-based online fashion and makeup tutorial site called Fabulive.com which offers tips and suggestions for Indian women from Indian Brides to every day working women on how to make up their face beyond the typical dark eye makeup worn to adorn the eyes and make them look brighter and wider.

Avoid the porcelain doll look and opt for bronzer, the folks at Fabulive suggest.

Lip and Cheek Makeup Tips

Choosing a lip color and doing the cheek makeup is also very difficult. You need to ensure that you pick up the right shades so that it complements the apparel of a  bride, for example. There are loads of makeup tutorials available at Fabulive to help them balance a neutral lip with a strong eye so it doesn’t come off too gaudy.

Eye Makeup

Eye make up must complement the outfit and therefore, choosing the right shade of the eyeshadow is equally essential. Another thing which Fabulive says is commonly used in the makeup of Indian brides is kajal or kohl, which requires precision. It is essential to stick to classic black eyeliner and create a natural effect with the help of brow powder and brush. Also, it suggest not missing mascara and eyelash curler, or even eyeleash extensions.

Common Makeup Tips

Exfoliate the face – The first thing to do is exfoliate the face  to make sure it is clean and there is no oil or dirt.

Moisturize the face – Retaining the softness of the skin is very important and for this, you need to moisturize the face. This will give an even tone to the face, and by gently rubbing the moisturizer you make the skin soft. You may use tinted moisturizer as well.

Make the face blemish-free – Apply a primer two minutes after applying moisturizer. This ensures that the foundation and the concealer remain intact on the face when you apply it. Now, cover the blemishes with the help of concealer, as this will brighten the skin tone of the bride.  Afterwards, apply foundation without SPF (Sun Protection Factor), as it can lead to undesirable flash effect in the photos.

Highlighter, Blush, and Bronzer – Do not forget to apply highlighter on the high planes of the face. Furthermore, to give a sharp look in the photo, it is vital to apply bronzer properly. It is better take brush angular and then on the sides of the chin, sides of the forehead and nose bones apply the strokes. Also, do not forget to apply the blush blending upwards in a circular motion.

Eyeshadow and Eyeliner – Usually, Indian brides, for example,  the Fabulive editors say, go with gold eye makeup as it suits the bright shades of lehengas and saris. As far as eyeliner is concerned,  pick the waterproof one and draw a thick line so that it highlights the eyes well. As kajal is used,  do not forget to use the smudge powder and translucent setting powder.

Lip liner and Lipstick – There are two ways of making the lips look beautiful. The first way is to stick to the natural line of the bride’s lips and apply the lipstick. However, these days to make a lip look fuller and more significant, applying lip liner natural lip line is quite appreciated.  Make sure you do not overdo it, as it might make the lip look too plump.

These tips are useful not just for Indian Brides but for anyone who wants a fabulous look for any formal event, a photo shoot or a night out on the town with their friends or husband or partner.

Celeb Inspired Style Tips for 40 Somethings

Turning 40 doesn’t mean your wardrobe options are suddenly cut in half. Crop tops, cutouts and cult trends like athleisure can, or rather should, remain in your arsenal if you want them to. Take inspiration from these well-dressed celebs who deftly strike a balance of fashion-forward and flattering. They’re resounding proof you should wear all of these pieces into your 40s and beyond.

I rocked a crop top with high waisted pants out on a date night with hubby this Summer and no one batted an eye. It actually was a head turner look.

The Zoe Collection did a round up of what stylish is in your 40s and I agree with the assessment that just because you’re over 40 doesn’t mean you cannot rock crop tops, cutouts and cult trends like athleisure where I spotted the above looks by Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Lopez. (See the HERE.)

I like that Witherspoon’s look was youthful and fun yet still age appropriate. To get this look,  start with dark cropped denims, a graphic tee and cropped denim jacket. I’d cop a pair it with a pair of red Aldo Uloaviel pumps and carry this fly French Connection Owen Mini Box bag ($49)

For J. Lo’s look *Girls On Film Navy Wrap Dress ($59) is a good option to get that look. The Also Uloaviel pump in black works here too. Madewell’s  Zip Top Transport Leather Tote ($188) would work here. In rainy weather or cooler temps,  boohoo’s Belted Shawl Collar Coat ($40) could be worn as well.

Make it Work and Work it!

Wear Yellow To Brighten Your Mood This Fall and Winter

As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, several of us start to see our moods and temperaments change or dampen. Seasonal Affect Disorder is a common condition that is linked to  the colder months of the year. It can be counterbalanced with light therapy and other sensory treatments.

I think another way to help lift the mood is to wear bright colors in your wardrobe.  Yellow is my go to! It’s a great hue because it’s sunny, bright and could lighten your mood just by wearing it, I think.

Be creative and find different ways to mix yellow into your wardrobe. Accessories are the best way to do that.  You can incorporate yellow by wearing yellow-tinted aviators or lemon framed sunglasses, sunflower yellow tassel earrings, a lemon chiffon patterned tote or a canary yellow scarf.

I like this Mango man Essential Scarf which is great and lightweight and good for warm or cool temps and runs just $15.

You can walk on sunshine with some yellow ballet flats, loafers or tennis shoes too. I like Bass’s Whitney Weejuns Leather Penny Loafer  ($77)- Women’s If you can be so bold and work in an environment that allows for creative dress, paint your nails yellow.

I also love the idea of a big bright and sunny yellow tote. It is unexpected and eye catching and will certainly turn heads like Aldo’s tote for just $39.00 which is a steal!

However, you can, go big and bold! Shop these styles:

Trending Indian Salwar Suits: How to look stylish Without Cultural Appropriating

I’ve blogged before about how a lot of American celebrities have embraced fashion and culture of India. In recent years, celebs like Beyonce, Coldplay, Major Lazer, DJ Snake and others traveled to India to shoot videos, after borrowing Indian instruments and sounds to create their hit songs. You can see elements of Indian dress and suits in the videos as well. Granted a lot of them like Selena Gomez, who donned a bindi during a Bollywood-inspired performance on Dancing with the Stars, get accused of cultural appropriation.

As Everyday feminists once wrote:

“The sari was originally intended to keep teenaged girls and women both comfortable in the heat and to look ‘modest,’” noted Palash Ghosh in the International Business Timesp.

That doesn’t mean non-Indian women can’t ever wear them; when in 2013, British first lady Samantha Cameron wore a sari to a Hindu temple to celebrate Diwali, a temple-goer told the Guardian:

“The fact that Mrs. Cameron made such a huge effort to dress as per Hindu customs most definitely shows how much she values our culture, religion and traditions.”

Oprah accomplished a similar effect when she donned a salwar kameez for the Jaipur Literature Festival in 2012, in Jaipur.

On the other hand, when a non-Indian tosses one on without much understanding of its origins, Gosh wrote, it feels like watching trick or treaters on Halloween

One way of avoiding the label is to learn more about the culture and clothing you’re honoring and respecting the tradition, heritage and history. Here is a little bit more about Indian Salwar Suits which are trending items during its annual Festive Season that happens this time of year.

Salwar suits, a traditional Indian wear, is one of the most-preferred outfits during all kinds of auspicious occasions. It’s a three-piece dress, traditionally consisting of pants called shalwar or salwar, a top called Kameez, and a stole called dupatta, which makes it quite a comfortable attire. This ethnic wear originates from the Northern part of India; however, it has gained popularity in the rest of India. Due to its adaptability and versatility, this outfit is one of the primary Indian ethnic dresses.

A salwar suit looks elegant on all occasions. It adds grace and accentuates the charm of the wearer. With festive season here, it’s the best time to flaunt your love for this traditional wear. Here is a list of trendy salwar suits styles you might want to consider before you decide your dress

  1. Palazzos: This trend is a rage among Indian women. This trend requires a Kurta paired with wide and relaxed fitted bottom pants. It’s comfortable and adds class to the personality. The wearer can choose from various styles of Kurta to team it up with a Palazzo pant. From a short length top to a flared Anarkali kurta, all kinds of tunics look great with palazzos. Take your fashion game to the next level by choosing a heavily embroidered palazzo designed on sheer fabric and pair it up with a solid colour plain kurta. This reverse style is newest in fashion and looks extremely stylish.
  2. Extra baggy salwars: The most popular suit style is Punjabi, also known as Patiala salwar suit. These pleated styles of salwars have a timeless appeal and are perfect for all body shapes. Their baggy fitting makes them very comfortable. However, the newest style of baggy pants popular among young girls is Harem pants, dhoti style pants and Afghani pants. All of these pants come in relaxed fit. While Afghani pants have pleats, Harem doesn’t. However, both come with tight-fitted edges at the bottom. Meanwhile, Dhoti style pants are loose from top to bottom, but they are wider at the thighs. Pleats on the thighs give it a beautiful structure. All of these pants can be teamed up with different kinds of Kurtas, but they look best with short tunics. Heels or flats both look equally elegant with these pants.
  3. Floral patterns: Floral patterns are quite a favourite among Indian women. The sophisticated and suave flower patterns enhance the feminine allure of the wearer. Florals on salwar suits look great in prints and embroidery. You can choose from a heavy floral kurta to an opulent flower-patterned dupatta to team up with the shalwar. The dainty florals have unique appeal when done on soft pastel shades of pink, blue, yellow, peach, etc. Also, whites and ivories with multicoloured thread work in flowery designs are a new trend.
  4. Jacketed Salwar Suit: Jackets add regal charm to a simple salwar suit. There are tons of style to experiment with. You can pick a long jacket for a classy look or a short one for a chic look, depending on the event. However, an intricately designed floor length jacket will make you look nothing less than a royal queen. Jackets design with heavy embroidery, zardozi, or zari adds an ornamental appeal to the outfit. Brocade jackets are back in vogue and are perfect for balmy weather.
  5. Cape and shrugs: Layering is not only restricted to jackets. Capes, ponchos and shrugs give a modern twist to this traditional wear. For a contemporary and modish look, opulently designed cape and ponchos are great options. These make for a perfect cocktail and dinner party ensemble. This is the best time to update your wardrobe with newest fashions and avail Diwali offers. Grab salwar suits online or in a nearby store at discounted prices.
  6. Crop tops and skinny pants: Salwar suits do not have to be worn in the traditional way always. Changing times brings changes in fashions, traditions and preferences. One of the most modern avatars of a salwar suit is Crop top and skinny pants. Since crop tops are a new rage among young girls, they love pairing it with skinny pants, also known as cigarette pants designed on dupion silk fabric. With sheer sleeves and a trail attached to the blouse, it becomes a spectacularly stylish masterpiece. If cigarette pants are not your thing, then you can team up the crop top with a designer palazzo or a sharara.
  7. Shararaas salwar suit: Speaking of shararaas, these type of shalwar kameez are back in fashion and creating quite a stir in the fashion industry. Originating from Pakistan, this outfit is quite popular in wedding parties and other auspicious occasions. It’s a three-piece suit with a Kurta, a dupatta and a flared lower. Usually, the lower is joined above the knee and are heavily embroidered with zari and sequin work to go with it. Traditionally, it is worn with a short Kurta. However, one can experiment with anarkali style kurta or a crop top to make a statement.
  8. Pastels: Pastels have been quite a fad since 2016. These soft and soothing shades of colors are now taking over the ethnic fashion industry. While solid and bright colours have taken a backseat, women prefer wearing pale and softer tones of colours these days. Pastels ooze out youthful and princess-y allure. The subtle hues have a unique grace and poise that look attractive in daytime events. These colors can be worn all-round the year. Traditional embroideries like chikankari, phulkari, Mukesh, aari, and others done on pastels has a resplendent charm. Even the brides are ditching traditional reds and pinks for their bridal wear and prefer pastel peach, sage green, and dull pink. At the same time, whites, ivories, dull gold and beige are picking up as preferred colors of fabric for traditional wears like salwar suits.

More popular salwar suits trends worth mentioning are sheer Kurtas, Anarkali style salwar kameez, gowns, and churidars. These styles have been popular for a while and it seems these trends are here to stay.

Indian salwar suits have been the hot favourite of women among other Indian ethnic wear. With new trends, this conventional dress is suitable for a formal occasion, wedding, ritual, traditional ceremony as well as an office meeting. Meanwhile, the dupatta is now just an accessory that you can simply skip if you want a more edgy and contemporary look. Pairing this outfit with statement jewelry and stylish footwear completes the look that will make the heads turn.

Get my Fall Season Weekend Look

I love the Autumn season. The crisp air. The color changing on the leaves. The pumpkin spice everything. Well maybe not that part. But my fave part of the season is Fall Fashion!

I love getting to wear warm sweatshirts and comfy cashmere sweaters and chunky cardigans. Fall is also the start of Boot season.

You can never get enough boots.

[See this POST about what boots to wear this fall]

I also love scarves and getting to experiment with the different ways to tie my scarf.

[SEE This post for over 25 ideas for How to Tie a Scarf]

I’m heading to a friend’s birthday party today and for the weekend, I’m opting with a red plaid cropped tie shirt. Plaid hopped back into season as a fashion fave for all year a few fashion seasons ago. It’s timely because wearing plaid is very common and fits into the fall season of Harvest festivals and visits to the orchard to pick berries, apples and other seasonal fruits.

I paired my red boyfriend shirt by American Eagle ($29.99) with my fave denim Mom jeans” ($29.96)  from that company.

You can get a similar shirt, Express’ Plaid Tie Hem Long Sleeve Shirt for $29.99 on sale HERE! And similar jeans in a wide variety of sizes from Old Navy for $25 here!

Because it is quite crisp out there, I dug out a long ribbed grey duster sweater out of my closet. You can get a similar brand of duster here from Nordstrom Rack for $39.97 HERE!

It’s my ama mater’s Homecoming and I have to wear red because that color along with yellow and black are our school colors. I couldn’t track down my Maryland cap so this red Washington Capitals cap will have to do.

Finally, instead of boots, I went with black quilt patent leather loafers by Sperry. You can get a similar style from that brand here for about $80 HERE! These shoes last a long time and look very well constructed and are an excellent investment!

The next day, I headed out to watch a good friend preach at her church and used the same grey cardigan duster to keep me warm over a black wrap dress that I paired with black tights and pointy-toed black pumps!

The Celeb-Inspired Fall Boots You Need To Get Now!

Cute shoes are a must, and this fall is all about the stylish boot. Scrunched ankle boots or sexy knee high, being pregnant is no time to forget about stylish footwear.

Celebrities manage to look effortlessly stylish even while knocked up and certainly while rocking cut fall boots

However, when shopping for a new pair of boots think about what your feet really need during pregnancy.  Still, you don’t have to cut out style for function, altogether. Mix it up and be creative.

Think Style and function.

  • Pregnancy can wreak havoc on your feet. They will swell, they will hurt, they may even sweat a little more thanks to hormone changes. All of this means that you cannot grab just any boot off the shelf. There are some important things you have to look for first.
  • Look for stretchability. If your feet have not start swelling yet, they will soon. And if they are already swollen, they can always get worse. While you want boots that fit comfortable and will not trip you up, consider how much wider your feet could get over the rest of the pregnancy. Look for boots that are a little wider, softer, and can stretch to accommodate your swelling feet.

Go with flats whenever possible. Heels add more pressure and stress to our legs, which can be extra painful when you are already carrying extra weight on them. Choose flat boots over the heels if you can. If heels are a must for you, look at shorter wider heels that will not put as much strain on your legs.
  • Make sure that your boots have good arch support. This is very important when pregnant, as your feet are subject to more stress than usual. If you have trouble finding good boots with enough arch support, you can always buy add-ins that go inside of your shoes and boots.
  • Choose breathable, natural fabrics for boots. Leathers and other natural materials are great for helping your feet breath and not trapping moisture against your feet. This can be especially good if pregnancy hormones are making your feet sweat somewhat more than usual. Natural fabrics will help wick moisture away and prevent smells from forming.

UGG makes the perfect boots for pregnancy. The new styles add that sense of flair without sacrificing on comfort. You can find a variety of styles that can be found at Zappos, that your feet will be sure to thank you for wearing.

A pair of great boots can add sizzle to your maternity wardrobe. Before you buy that pair of boots, make sure they will not work against you during the rest of your pregnancy.

#NYFW: Pregnant Models Stun On Red Carpets and Catwalks

New York Fashion Week did not pass without some expecting ladies making headlines. A very 5-months preggers model Lily Aldridge walked the runway to the Brandon Maxwell show at the Classic Car Club wearing a backless crimson  dress from his collection with her hair sleeked back in a parted pony.

Fenty x Puma, Marc Jacobs and Yeezy Season 2 model Slick Woods is expecting her first son with fellow model Adonis Bosso looked supreme fashionable chic while posing on red carpets to various shows she attended.

Model Slick Woods on the Red Carpet at various shows featuring her baby bump loud and proud.

This is a trend that takes off from this Summer’s breastfeeding model who nursed her 5-month old baby during Sports Illustrated Swimwear week in Miami, Florida.

Last year at NYFW, designer Eckhaus Latta made waves when he sent model and artist Maia Ruth Lee down the catwalk wearing a button-up dress that opened around her baby-carrying belly

“So proud to walk the Brandon Maxwell runway 5 months pregnant! I’ve walked few runways in my life and this is a moment that I’ll look back on forever with great emotion. Thank you Brandon for letting me shine and being such a true gentleman, Love you forever,” Aldridge wrote in the caption to her photo she shared on Instagram.
