STUDY: Tattling Is Good For Kids; How to Foster Good Behavior

guest post

Well-documented research from the Boys Town Center for Behavioral Health suggests positive peer reporting helps socially rejected students.

Students “tattle” to the teacher about their positive interactions with the ostracized student. This allows the child’s classmates to see his/her good qualities and improves the child’s behavior problems and social standing. The interactions with the child’s peers become more positive.

Kids want acceptance, approval and appreciation, so the best way for teachers and parents to change behavior— is give positive feedback, even for the littlest things. Boys Town, one of the largest non-profit childcare organizations in the country, is offering this expert advice to help encourage positive behavior.

  1. Catch the child being good. Even kids that behave badly a lot behave appropriately more often than not; it’s just the inappropriate behavior gets all the attention.
  2. If a child does something wrong – point out the mistake they made, but tell them what they did right as well.
  3.  Praise your child when they use the skills you have taught them – it reinforces the skill and makes them more likely to use it in the future.

4. Be consistent and praise often and you will be amazed by the change in behavior.

“Most of what kids do is appropriate and is worthy of acknowledging and all it would take is a, hey you look pretty nice today,” said Boys Town psychologist, Dr. Patrick Friman.

About Boys Town Nationally, Boys Town has been a beacon of hope for America’s children and families through its life-changing youth care and health care programs for more than 90 years. In 2014, Boys Town’s Integrated Continuum of youth care and health care programs impacted more than 500,000 children and families across America. This includes those who received services from Boys Town’s residential programs as well as those served by the many varied programs that comprise the Boys Town Integrated Continuum of Child and Family Services, including In-Home Family Services, health care services provided by Boys Town National Research Hospital and the Boys Town National Hotline.

Seriously…Dads-To-Be Are Social Media Posting the ‘Birthie’ Now?

guys birthies

Um…so you’ve heard of the Selfie and the Usie and the Belfie, but behold, a Reddit user this week went viral with his “Birthie“, a photo of his wife in the 12th hour of labor.

As one could imagine, the photos upset a few of the 1.4 million and counting people who saw the viral photo of Gil Silano all smiles with his wife Sarah grimacing in pain in labor on a delivery bed. But it turns out it was her idea to capture their expressions as the baby entered the world, Silano says.

reddit

‘My wife wanted to make sure that someone took a picture of the expression on our faces when our daughter was born today.,” Silano captioned the pic. “So I took one.”

The proud dad-to a daughter born soon after the photo said he showed her the photo and she chuckled and the laughter continued even as he read all the comments on it.

‘I showed it to her in between pushes and she cracked up. Now I’m reading her all of you guys comments while she feeds our healthy 7lb 6 oz girl,” he added. “P.S. Her mom took pics of our reactions 10 mins later :).”

In coverage of the viral photo, the Daily Mail reminded its readers of last year’s marathon photo session that Brit singer Robbie Williams took of his wife  Ayda Field when she was in labor and eventually delivered their second child , son Charlton Valentine, last year, October 2014.

robbie one

The “Take That”  singer-songwriter  snapped himself pleasant looking while his Turkish American actress wife looked downright miserable and probably in pain.

robbie 2

He also took a pic of her glittered Louboutin pumps on while her legs were propped up in stirrups with the caption: “‘When Ayda goes into labour she comes correct.” Funny!

robbie 4 - Copy

He shared photos of himself entertaining her and of the two knocked out asleep wearing matching sleeping eye masks.

robbie 3

Honestly, I can dig it because it’s another example of social media being used to keep it all the way real with folks and share the insider look into what pregnancy, labor and delivery REALLY are about…and the wives looked like they appreciated the distraction from the other pain of labor and delivery. Good stuff!

The 7 Spices You’ll Need to Pull Off This Fall’s Recipes

7 spices for recipes autumn

FALL cooking means a new set of spices to liven up your dishes! These days, everyone is a buzz about Patti Labelle‘s pies being promoted via a viral video by YouTube comedian and singer James Wright and most certainly filled with fall spices.

If you want to make your own Patti Sweet Potato Pie, you can get the recipe from the veteran singer’s 1999 cook book LaBelle Cuisine: Recipes to Sing About at our partners at Amazon.com.

For fall pies and many other fall recipes, you will want to make sure your pantry is stocked with one or more of these 7 spices summarized by NoMoreToGo food delivery and recipe service.

1. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of the most popular spices, both on this list and around the world. It is versatile enough to pair with both sweet and savory dishes. For example, try it fruit dishes like homemade apple or pear butter, or pies, and sprinkle it sparingly in stew, casseroles and breads.

2. Allspice

Actually the dried and ground fruit of a West Indian tree, allspice is delicious in stews, roasts  and some breads. A little goes a long way, so follow the recipe carefully and start with just a pinch or two in your own recipes.

3. Cloves

This aromatic spice is also very popular during the winter holiday season, and pairs well with many meats, fruits, desserts and more. For an inexpensive and festive fall air freshener, try making your own orange pomander balls with fresh oranges, cloves and spices.

6 SPICES TO BOOST YOUR FAMILY’S IMMUNITY THIS FALL

4. Nutmeg

Nutmeg is a unique flavor and one that really complements and enhances baked dishes, sauces and desserts. It is also great with pudding, spinach, and squash, and is a prime flavoring ingredient in pumpkin dishes and eggnog. Nutmeg can purchased in ground form or bought whole and grated.

5. Pumpkin Spice

Pumpkin spice, also called pumpkin pie spice, is practically synonymous with fall. Pumpkin spice isn’t just for pies, though! Try it in all kinds of desserts and snacks for instant fall flavor, like cookies, cakes, muffins and even coffee and cocoa.

6. Rosemary

Rosemary is a savory spice with an intense herbal flavor that just begs to be paired with meat, tomato dishes and roasted veggies. Rosemary is reported to have health-boosting antioxidant properties, and is yummy used sparingly in herbal teas. Fresh rosemary is best, but dried can be nearly as flavorful.

7. Saffron

Saffron is an exotic spice that lends a rich yellow-orange color and unique subtle flavor to  m

18 Nutritious Bento Box Ideas for Your Kid’s School Lunch

Bellyitch Rewind

I just got my OmieBox Bento Box in the mail this week! I’m so excited to prepare some nutritious lunches full of variety for my picky eater.

The colorful plastic portable lunch box with compartments like a typical Japanese Bento box is a gift to me from the creators  in appreciation of me blogging about their wonderful lunch box invention that was featured on Kickstarter  last year.

As I am trying to come up with some healthy and yummy lunch options to fill in this box, I am once again sharing some Bento Box lunch images I found online.  These tiny meals are the perfect solution for providing many options and keeping them neat and tidy for little hands,

These days retailers like Pottery Barn and Target sell them starting at around $10 each, and upwards.  More complex ones like Omie Box‘s have hot attachment options so you can provide soup too.

Check out these creative lunch options I spotted that some have already created. I’m making my grocery shopping list now to accommodate some of these ideas.

Mommy Wars: The 7 Jobs Every Work-At-Home and Stay-At-Home Mom Does

mommy wars

About a month ago, a writer penned this “mommy wars” piece for xoJane which said, in sum, that being a Stay at home mom is a privilege but not a job. Naturally, the author got it from all sides with that opinion.

I just shared it generally without an opinion on the topic on my own, however, I am now ready to chime in my thoughts.

Personally, I became a work-at-home mom a few years ago. I spend my work hours (and nights) being  a part time/occasional lawyer while building a digital media company and supplementing my skills, income and connections as a freelance writer/blogger and consultant. The rest of my  24-hours are spent tending to parenting and mom-only duties. The latter can be so time-consuming and overwhelming, that I find it challenging to keep myself looking decent during the day, to comb my hair and take regular showers. Thank goodness I don’t have to go to an office and interact with work peers.

And during this time, I have learned to respect all the work that goes into full time parenting. The responsibilities and duties have grown exponentially especially these days that my three children are older, and are enrolled in plenty after school activities and sports.

It’s one thing to only have to earn a living or work while leaving your child to the care of school, after school centers, a nanny, parent or child care center for most of the day. To add on the other jobs/tasks that parents have to do daily, weekly and monthly is just, whoa!

So in addition to being a small business owner/momtechpreneur, here are 7 jobs that I (and many other stay-at-home and work-from-home moms) do regularly:

1. Chief Home Energy Efficiency Manager- This job requires going around the home unplugging devices, scheduling and attending energy efficiency walk thru and inspections, fussing at the hubster and kids every time some large energy sapping device or machine is plugged in, and agonizing over the letter the electricity company sends every month letting the family know the house consumes twice as much electricity than most people in my entire town, and basically suck. sigh WTG to add more stress on an already stressed-out life, PEPCO!

2. School-Household Liaison – This is a big position requires tracking all the various paperwork, forms, permission slips, notices, announcements that come from the kids’ school online information system, email servers and from manual sources like the bottom of bookbags, folders and coat pockets. The job also requires cognizant recognition of the children’s relationships with faculty, staff and classmates and remain engaged, interactive and aware of how these relationships impact the kids lives.

3. Mailroom Coordinator/Operator – This task entails daily, weekly and monthly analysis of the mail that comes into the home, processing and sorting mail that need immediate attention, should be logged onto the family calendar or inserted in the bill payment system, and communication with various family members who have their mail sent to our home because they don’t trust some pieces of mail going to their own homes, for various reasons. This is what they were thinking of when someone coined the term , “piling on.”

4. Housekeeper– This job requires routing dusting, sweeping, taking out the trash, hanging up and folding laundry, cleaning out the kids rooms, picking up random dishes strewn all over the home, seasonal trips to the laundromat to launder large bedspreads and towels, bathroom cleaning and cleaning the refrigerator. The assistants (aka the kids in my home) wash the dishes and clean up on weekends and when it’s just out of control; and the hubby does weekly laundry, ironing and grocery shopping. Thank goodness otherwise, this job could be the most exhausting!

5. Cook – Cooking and/or microwaving leftovers, whipping up 10 minute meals, and grilling chicken, hotdogs, burgers and other foods the picky kids eat.

6. Household/Business Accountant – Keeping track of the household and business bills and ensuring they are paid on time; and sorting receipts and payments for the tax man in April.

7. Shuttle Driver – This position entails shuttling the children back and forth to practices, after school events and sporting activities; managing car pool duty and trying to remember to gas up the shuttle and at least take it in for a detail-level of cleaning once a quarter…at least!

If each of these were paid positions or someone had to be hired to fill them, we’re talking over a half million dollars in annual salaries yet stay-and-work-at-home moms and dads do it without pay and should be recognized for having a tough task, whether it is a privilege or not!

Why British Parents Are Accusing PayPal of Ruining Christmas for Kids

daily mail

Parents in the UK are accusing PayPal of ruining Christmas for their kids.

During last week’s airing of the TV talent competition XFactor, a commercial for the online payment system broadcast which promoted PayPal’s role in easing the shopping experience.

In the commercial, two little brothers are discussing the fact their parents haven’t been doing much shopping this year and fearing that it means they won’t be getting any presents for Christmas. It alludes to the fact that the parents are Santa Claus (or Father Christmas as they call him over the pond) and these kids know it already.

The commercial ends, “Check out before they know it.” That is because with Paypal the parents won’t need to do any actual shopping in retail stores but can shop online and check out using PayPal.

In reaction to the outcry, PayPal took down the ad but not before it could be grabbed by the Daily Mail  which also captured some of the most heated angry tweets from parents.

Here are the Top 10 Family Winter Vacation Destinations

Bellyitch Rewind
family vacation destinations
It  may be time to star planning for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Winter Vacation!
If you live in a cooler climate that experiences wintry weather during the colder months, but aren’t a fan of toughing out the colder days or participating in winter sports, the idea of escaping to a warm, sunny locale for a quick family vacation during winter break can be incredibly appealing. While there are a staggering number of places around the world that enjoy warm weather during the winter months, these are 10 of the best and most family-friendly spots to visit if you’re looking to escape the winter doldrums with your brood.
  1.     Florida Keys – With average temperatures in the 70’s, even during January and February, the Florida Keys offer American families the chance to get as close to the equator as possible without leaving the continental United States. In addition to the many beaches and water sports, there are also ample opportunities to learn more about marine life on a glass-bottomed boat or a chartered eco-tour.
  2.     Dominican Republic – Skipping the country in search of warmer climates doesn’t have to empty your bank account. During the winter months, most resorts in the beautiful and exotic Dominican Republic slash their prices dramatically, leaving their prices well within most budgets. Temperatures during the winter months also tend to hover in the high 70’s to 80’s.
  3.     Maya Riviera, Mexico – With year-round temperature averages of about 78°, the Maya Riviera is a popular destination for those who aren’t wild about winter weather. From sparkling beaches to spectacular Mayan ruins, there’s definitely something to suit every member of your family in the area.
  4.     Hawaii – If you don’t mind a bit of crowding, the Hawaiian Islands may be the perfect choice for your winter getaway. Because each of the eight islands has their own attractions and offer something different to tourists, you’ll be able to find activities everyone in the family will enjoy. Luxury accommodations can get quite pricey, however, because the winter months are quite popular for tourists to visit Hawaii.
  5.     Las Vegas, Nevada – Vegas might have the dubious honor of being dubbed “Sin City,” but it’s also a surprisingly suitable family destination, and ranked number one on Getaroom.com’s list of wintertime bargain destinations in the United States. Average temperatures fall a bit short of tropical in the winter, hovering in the low 60’s during the winter months, but you still won’t need to pack those heavy jackets and scarves.
  6.     The Amalfi Coast, Italy – During the winter months, the Amalfi Coast region is one of the warmest areas of Italy, with average temperatures in the 50’s. Some hotels and restaurants are closed or on limited schedules during the winter months, but there are still plenty of attractions to keep everyone entertained and out of the snow during winter break.
  7.     Phoenix, Arizona – With spring-like temperatures hovering in the high 60’s, the many attractions and activities in Phoenix make the city a great escape from winter weather for a short jaunt during winter break. There are plenty of activities for kids, including museums and other educational pursuits, as well as a variety of outdoor activities.
  8.     Guanacaste, Costa Rica – From zip-lining through rainforests and thrilling canopy tours to surfing lessons and low-key horseback trail rides, there’s plenty of tropical fun to be had in Costa Rica during the winter months. The crowds are almost non-existent and prices are dramatically dropped during the winter season, which can be quite rainy in certain areas but is easily avoidable by traveling a very short distance.
  9.     Orlando, Florida – Families have been making the pilgrimage to Orlando year-round for decades to visit the Happiest Place on Earth and take advantage of the many amenities. It’s significantly less expensive during the winter months, provided that you avoid peak days like Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s Day, and will have average temperatures in the low 70’s.
  10.     Cyprus – The third largest Mediterranean island is dotted with olive and citrus groves, mountains and beaches, and is an impressively low-cost winter vacation destination for families. Temperatures are in the high 70’s from November to February. The island also does not shut down during the winter low season, so you’ll still be able to visit historical sites, go hiking, and enjoy the many amenities of hotels whose rates drop by almost half from November through March.
 Good luck planning! Enjoy!
