The ‘Santa’ Trick To Get Kids’ Chores Done This Month

Tis the season for helping out at home and sharing with people in need

Getting kids to clean their rooms and do other chores around the house is usually a constant battle for parents. But, very soon kids will be hard at work writing letters and making lists of the toys and games they hope to receive for Christmas creating the perfect opportunity for parents to re-motivate their kids.

Santa and his elves will be watching to make sure those chores are getting done and that valuable lessons are being learned as well. For parents with a busy holiday schedule, follow these simple tips to get kids to help more around the house and keep them motivated year-round because Santa is always watching.

Make Like an Elf – It might be hard for kids to understand the concept of a job so put it in holiday terms. Santa and the elves are working hard to make the toys and games, so kids need to work hard to earn them. Treat their chores as their first job and an opportunity to start teaching them about spending, saving, donating and investing.

Divide Up Hosting Housework – Assign your children tasks that match their ages and skill sets to get the house ready for holiday guests. Make sure to give them a deadline to help teach time management and keep them focused. Pay them for the work they do and suggest they use the money to pay for small gifts for a family gift exchange.

Shovel Up the Savings – Broaden the concept of a “first job” for older kids by having them do chores for neighbors. You can either pay your kids for raking leaves and shoveling snow or talk to your neighbors about hiring your kids for a small amount. Have your kids put the money into savings and use this as an opportunity to teach them about the different types of interest that can be earned through savings accounts.

Spread Cheer – Going out of the way to help others during the holidays is in the spirit of the season. To teach kids the importance of helping others and make them feel like they are making a difference have them use part of their earnings from doing chores for a charitable donation or to buy gifts and food for families in need.

Stuff Stockings with Stocks – If you want your kids to help out with chores all year, not just during the holidays, give them a reason to be motivated. Adults work for a paycheck and kids will too, especially if their money starts growing in the stock market.

Get Unstuck With Gift Ideas For Your Tech Loving Friend

It’s almost upon us, that time of year when we give and receive gifts from family and friends, and hopefully we have chosen wisely.

And that’s the rub isn’t it?  Choosing something that will suit the person instead of buying something we think might suit them, and personally I have the greatest problems when it comes to choosing gifts for the significant males in my life.

Luckily, we are able to grab some really good gadgets this year which usually satisfy the majority of men whether it’s anew pair of headphones or the latest smartwatch, there is something out there that will suit your father, boyfriend, brother or husband.

For instance, my brother is a fan of the Samsung Galaxy S9. He uses it for almost everything he needs to do online from his banking to playing at his recommended online casino for UK players where his number one favorite pass-time are playing on the progressive slot games followed closely behind by European roulette.

However, he does find that being such an enthusiastic gamer drains his battery so something similar to the Native Union wireless charger pad would be perfect for him as it does away with having to fumble about for the phone charging cable. All he will need to do is pop his phone on the pad and that’s it the phone will start charging straight away.

For those that did not suffer from Virtual Reality sickness, Sony has released some pretty impressive titles with AstroBot being the one that could rival Red Dead Redemption 2.

If you know you snore and do not sleep alone then perhaps gifting  that person some Bose noise making sleep buds which pipe soothing ambient sounds into his ears could be the answer. They’re totally wireless they come in three sizes so he is ensured to have a comfortable fit and they can even work as an alarm clock that only he will be able to hear.

For the fit men in our lives the AppleWatch Series 4 will track their fitness after the festive season making sure they get in shape for the warmer weather when we tend to shed a few pieces of clothing. Not only does this great smartwatch do all of that but it also displays texts from their iPhone, neat eh?

If your budget is not massive then remember that you can search online at sites like amazon which have a ton of really good quality men’s gifts that are not so expensive but shows them that you love them just as much!

I’m a Foodie And These Gifts Would Make Me Happy! {2018 Gift Guide}

I consider myself a foodie, a relatively new pop culture term I know makes a lot of people cringe. It describes a category of people who are connoisseurs of different and varying cuisine.

We not only love variety but we savor and revel at things like texture, flavor, plating, combinations and such. Foodies enjoy food as an art not just for eating and foodies are usually adventurous when it comes to trying out different dishes, eateries, and restaurants. This love also extends to drinks as well.

As a foodie, I put together a gift guide of items I know I personally would love. Also, I am friends with quite a few and after studying their habits as well, I think this is a pretty good list. I think it’s the best of my 15 and growing list of gift guides this Holiday season.

1. Sur La Table  Molcajete ($45) (+20% off your order: Use code BERRY18 at checkout.)Everything Avocado is hot now, and what better way to mash up fresh guacamole or any spice, paste or rub for a dish than with a

2. Customized Cutting Board ( $29.99 )Foodies who love to cook are always on a cutting board slicing and dicing vegetables, meats and other delicacies for their dishes. A personalized cutting board would put a smile on your fave foodie’s face!

3. Indoor self-watering Garden ($80) Foodies prefer the freshest of ingredients and can usually tell the difference between taragon, oregano, chive, basil, thyme and other delicate fresh seasoning. It would be a delight to a foodie to get to grow his or her own fresh ingredients even if s/he doesn’t have a large yard.

4. “Season: Big Flavors, Beautiful Food” by Nik Sharma  $31.50 Named one of the best and most anticipated cookbooks by The New York TimesFood & WineEpicuriousEaterGrub StreetThe New YorkerTheKitchnThe Forward, and Delish and the October 2018 Book Club Pick for Bon Appetit.

Pen them all down in this one spot, a family cook book that you and the family customize. Also, foodies are always looking for new dishes to create. Here’s a way for them to organize all the different recipes they discover or wrangle from folks and chefs.

10. Raw Spice Bar Spices and/or Subscription Starting at $6

I received a few of these spices to test out and so far have tested two and am in love! The spices arrive fresh in an airtight insulated resealable pouch. I never knew what I could create.

I marinated some chicken in the for an hour and then pan seared them after and came up with some very flavorful strips that the family loved. They accompanied a garden salad.

Then I tried the on Flounder and Baked it to perfection. You could savor every morsel and taste every single spice.

The spices these guys assemble are the best and one of the fave on the market. I’m going to reup my subscription when my review sample runs out for sure and have been singing the Raw Spice Bar’s praises to friends and on my personal social media pages for several days now!

10 Christmas Classic Books To Add To Your Child’s Library

Christmas is a magical time of year for both kids and adults alike.  The kids are out of school, the holiday cheer keeps everyone in high spirits, and spending time together as a family is at the top of everyone’s priority list.  One hallmark of the Christmas season is the wide variety of Christmas stories, both new and old, that you can tell your child.

Twas the Night Before Christmas  This story is actually a poem that was written in 1823 by Clement Clarke Moore.  The poem was the first of its kind to describe Santa and his sleigh, and contributed largely to how people picture Santa today.  Moore wrote this poem for his children, but it was later published in the newspaper and was so popular that it was reprinted year after year. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas – Dr. Seuss is at it again, this time with a rather surly furry green character who hates Christmas.  The Grinch is sick of everyone being so cheerful at Christmastime that he decides he’s going to steal Christmas.  However, the kindness shown to him by one little girl melts his heart, and he ends up giving everything back while learning the true meaning of Christmas.

A Christmas Carol – A classic story written by Charles Dickens, this Christmas tale talks about a crabby old man named Scrooge who is a penny-pinching, miserable man.  He is estranged from his own family and treats his workers terribly.  Scrooge is visited by three ghosts one night who show him what Christmas really means.  The story ends when he wakes up on Christmas morning, just in time to make amends.  This one is best watched!

The Polar Express – Chris Van Allsburg writes a story about a boy who isn’t quite sure if Santa is real or not.  He boards a train that appears in his backyard one night and is swept away on the adventure of a lifetime to the North Pole.  While there, he meets elves and ghosts who convince him that Santa really does exist, and when ends up back at home it’s with a firm belief in Santa again.

Meet Santa Bear – As in most books by Stan and Jan Berenstain, there is a lesson to be learned in this book.  Although, in this book, the lesson is really more about getting answers to difficult questions, like “how does Santa get down a skinny chimney?” or “how does the sleigh land without snow on the ground?”  These questions, and others, are answered in this Berenstain Bear book.

The Year Without a Santa Claus – The author, Phyllis McGinley, pens this story about the year Santa decides to take the year off because he doesn’t think anyone believes in him anymore.  He leaves two elves in charge and they make a mess of things.  Heat Miser and Cold Miser make their debut in this book and subsequent cartoon.  Santa comes to the rescue and realizes that there are some believers left and changes his mind.

Moms: You Won’t Make It Through the Holidays Unless You Do These 6 Things

Being a mom is one of life’s most wonderful experiences for a woman, but it can also take a toll on you.

During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, you might find yourself even more stressed out than usual. What can you do to feel better?

Today, we offer tips to help moms everywhere this time of year, compliments of Vinay Saranga M.D. is a psychiatrist and founder of Saranga Comprehensive Psychiatry.

His tips to help moms everywhere this time of year:

  1.  Give yourself a break: Being a mom is a lot to take on, so first and foremost, give yourself a pat on the back for how well you have things together even if it doesn’t feel that way all the time. Chances are, you have your own personal and professional life to manage, and on top of that, raising kids is a tremendous amount of responsibility so don’t be so hard on yourself.
  2. Prioritize: Make a list or a schedule for the coming week of things that need to get done. Include appointments you need to be at, tests you need to help your kids study for, extracurricular activities, birthday parties your kids need to attend and more. Seeing everything for the upcoming week in front of you helps you prepare and stay organized
  3. Make time for you: Being a mom is one of the most fulfilling experience a woman can have, but it can also take a toll on you. That’s why all moms need to make time for themselves every day. Even 20 to 30 minutes of some quiet time will help you rest, relax and recharge. You can sit in a quiet place and do nothing, listen to music, read a book or whatever takes your mind off of things and reduces stress. This shouldn’t be seen as optional but should be required for all moms
  4. Delegate: This is especially true as your kids get older. Delegate the household chores and other responsibilities. There’s no reason that mom should have to do everything. Get your kids to pack their lunch, clean up their rooms, do the laundry, takeout the garbage, etc.
  5.  Understand the delusion of perfection: As a mom, you may strive for perfection. Perfection in your parenting style, perfection in your kid’s studies and grades, perfection in your cooking, perfection in your career, perfection in the gifts you get your children this holiday season and more. While it’s certainly great to want to be the very best you can be, don’t let perfectionism eat away at you.
  6.  Discuss your feelings: Again, being a mom is a lot to handle. When it gets to be too much, don’t hold in your feelings because that’s not good for your mental or physical health. Find a friend or your spouse and speak about what you are feeling. You can also find a group of other moms who meetup to support one another. If you’re really not feeling like yourself, see a mental health professional to discuss what’s going on.

20 Hacks and Tips to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

Every year, the average American gains between 7 to 12 pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas,

Thanks to Dr. Eddie Fatakhov, M.D., a.k.a. Dr. Fat-off, a Board-Certified Physician, Nutritionist, and Best-Selling Author of “The Doctors’ Clinic-30 Program“, we have 21 hacks, tips and suggestions for you to follow to avoid excess Holiday Weight Gain

His latest book is “Dr. Fat-Off Simple Life-Long Weight-Loss Solutions.”

1. Bring your own sugar-free drinks to a party in case your host has none to offer.

2. Eat something, even if it’s an apple before arriving to a party, it will help take the edge off your hunger.

3. If the function, gathering or restaurant has a buffet, be careful and make sure you get at the end of the line behind everybody else. Take only 2-3 small items and return to your seat. Eat your selections slowly, with ample fluid intake between bites.

4. Repeat step 4 after waiting a short interval and return to the buffet for one or two more items.

5. Repeat step 5 but take ONE selection per trip. Each selection or item should be about the size of the average cafeteria selection of that food.

6. When visiting friends or family, be careful not to accept sweets or problem foods. Instead graciously decline, but do accept something, even if it is a sugar-free soda, unsweetened tea, decaf coffee, or water.

7. Never say you are on a diet, as this is an open invitation for your hostess to tempt you, or argue with you about whether or not something is permitted.

8. Consider eating lean turkey, ham, beef or similar moderate-fat proteins for your main dish at holiday parties.

9. Eat Slowly! Average person should chew 30 times before swallowing.

10. Don’t forget to add lightly-steamed vegetables to meat dishes as they are high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

11. When first seated at the table, the first thing you should spot is the WATER! Drink (8-10) ounces (or more) with each meal.

12. Always select fresh fruit and vegetables over spiced meats, hams, cheeses, crackers, and dips.

13. Try your best to avoid sugary pies, cakes, and cookies.

14. When eating, select smaller portions and use smaller plates.

15. Always leave food behind. Never clean your plate.

16. Deserts should be limited to sugar-free gelatins, alone or in combination with unsweetened chopped cranberries, or grated carrots.

17. If you use artificial sweeteners like Equal, add it after cooking since over heating it destroys its sweetness.

18. Saccharin and Splenda can be used in recipes that involve cooking, because they are stable molecules, even at baking temperatures.

19 Ambrosia can be made with no sugar, producing a guilt free holiday treat.

20. Fruitcakes, mincemeat pie and other rich calorie loaded confections should be avoided as if they were poison.

Here’s Your Thanksgiving Family Manners Dinner Guide to Not Losing It!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Tis the season for conspicuous consumption and overeating.

Also, welcome the season of family gatherings, togetherness and bonding. Sadly, this is also a time for tension, rudeness and gaffes, feeding grudges, creating new ones and dodging snarky barbs, criticism and other well-meaning but annoying questions and comments from family members.

My audience is pregnant women mainly so if you’re expecting, I know your emotions are on level 100 and tolerance for bull is at -100!

Here are some quick tips I thought of to set you and the kids straight in the manners department and for escaping the family gatherings still loving one another, well, mostly.

Moms-to-be – Bite your tongue, mama! Bite it! If it will help, carry a squeeze ball to torture when you run out of nerves to handle some of the intrusive questions and comments you will get:

  • Were you trying?
  • Did you want a boy/girl?
  • Why did you pick that name?
  • So you are sticking with that name (the passive aggressive version)
  • Another one?
  • This is it right? (the passive aggressive version)

Your Kids- Your children might have heard you talking about Aunt Sally’s no-good boyfriend with no job or Uncle Rob’s arrest or Cousin Barb getting fired for the 3rd time this year. Remind them to not bring any of this  up or butt in with an opinion on whatever personal stresses, trauma or gossip they may or may not have overheard you yapping about this year. Trust.

Manners – If you’re hosting, remind the kids of basic manners. You know they won’t remember.  Tell the kids to take coats and throw them gently in that pile on the bed when there is no more room in the coat closet.  Remind them to say please, and thank you and to share their toys with their cousins and other children coming over. And to play nice and try to stick to the basement. Ha! Just kidding, but yeah.

If you are going over someone’s house as a guest, remind them to not complain out loud about Great Aunt Wilhelmina’s funny smell, or twist up their noses at your cousin’s girlfriends attempt as string bean salad. It’s hard not to wear emotions on your sleeve when you’re staring at raisins in a macaroni dish, but blame the Food Network (in  your head) and don’t start any beefs over it.

Dinner Topics: Politics and Religion – Try to avoid both topics especially in these contentious times. If they come up , switch up the convo.  Even if everyone in the family are of the same political bent, these are still complex topics that can get heated and go from 0 to 100 Real Quick!

Clean Up – Know when to call it a night and rap up. If you’re a guest, don’t take all of the people’s leftovers in the carryout container you brought with you. Leave them a spoonful or two.

But do offer to do the dishes, or send in one of your older children to help. You’ll still get the credit! ha!  If you’re expecting, you’ll probably get a pass anyone on clean up duty because you shouldn’t be on your feet anyway!  Yeah, milk this pregnancy for all it’s worth! ha!

If you’re hosting and you had enough, feel free to hug and kiss the last stragglers good night, blame it on the baby and leave them right there and all the dishes for your spouse and kids to clean up. Hopefully, they’ll get the hint and exit after you leave. Ha! That’s not rude. Is it? ha!

I think that’s it! Chime in and drop us some more on line! Connect with us @Bellyitch on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest!
