Couture kids clothes spending is not just for Celebrity Kids, how Affluent parents spend a killing too

A decade ago, who would have been able to predict that at the tender age of 6 months old celebrity offsprings like Harper Beckham, Mason Disick, Suri Cruise,  North West, Skylar Berman and the like would be fashion trendsetters, but they were.
That’s the spin on a New York Post  piece today highlighting some of the affluent parents who spend loads of money outfitting their children as young as a few months old in super expensive couture and designer kids clothing.
One Brooklyn mom, Priscilla Monteiro, purchased for her 5-month old daughter Yasmine and 4-year old girl Vera outfits that cost over $1400 total each to wear to a swanky industry party on a yacht during the Cannes Films Festival  later this May. Another Danielle Fornes, a blogger and former educator,  mixes up her high end and affordable pieces but still doesn’t think twice about dressing her daughter Jolie in a $395 Ralph Lauren dress and $75 Nordstrom ballet flats.
But Fornes has figured out how to make a business out of it. The investment banker’s wife is a kid stylist who charges Upper West Side parents $200 per hour and $150 for an additional child to dress their kids for upscale events and parties, and essentially to  “keep up with the Joneses.”

“These children on the Upper West Side go to a lot of parties, and though the mothers are friends, it’s embarrassing if their son or daughter is wearing the same outfit as someone else,” Fornes told the New York Post.

It’s a lucrative field and one that many of the top fashion houses aren’t leaving on the table. Roberto Cavalli, Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Chloe and other top designer lines all have children’s lines of clothing launched within the last few years.
Another Brooklyn mom Sharra Dade told the paper she dresses her daughter Alyssa who is a child model and actress in upscale clothing because of all the industry events she attends with celebrities. As the Post noted,  Salma Hayek dresses her daughter, Valentina, in Gucci, and Victoria Beckham, dresses Harper, often in Burberry and Stella McCartney.
But Dade isn’t foolish. To offset the costs of the premium clothing, Alyssa’s realtor mom Dade later consigns the clothes that Alyssa wears only once or twice.
And business is booming.
Heidi Lieske of the store Be Mini Couture said “many of our customers are affluent 30- and 40-somethings influenced by mommy blogs and actors who appear with their kids in celebrity magazines.”
Very interesting as Bellyitch Blog has indeed been tracking, and noting the fashionable and posh clothing of celebrity and the Richie Rich’s of the world since it launched in 2007.

Valentine’s Day Gifts for the Expectant Mom

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, this is the perfect opportunity to show the mom to be in your life some love! Just a kind card or letter to let them know you are thinking about them is great, but a personalized gift is a great way to support a lady who may be experiencing lots of aches and pains.

One gift idea that’s great for any mom to be is a relaxation basket. Simply purchase a good size basket and then fill it with all her favorite goodies. Perhaps fill it with her favorite bubble bath, sweet smelling lotion and super soft socks. Pick out a new book or a favorite magazine and her favorite candy treat to place in as well. If she is not much of a reader, choose a DVD and maybe some popcorn and a soda.

If a gift certificate is in your budget, you might include a spa day. Many spas offer maternity massages and this is a great gift for an expecting mother over fifteen weeks.

If a gift certificate is not in the budget, opt for making your own coupon book filled with free foot massages or a “duty free” night so she can relax in her own tub while you pick up the slack.

The key to any of these gifts is personalization. Choose items that you know she enjoys and that will help her to relax and enjoy the holiday.

Another sweet idea is to give a gift to the mom from the new baby. Maybe include a sonogram picture on a card and include the caption “You are “heads down” the best Mommy around” Love, Baby’s name. Maybe include a small basket of goodies that are from the baby such as some snacks she has been craving since being pregnant or a children’s book about a mommy and baby with a personal inscription on the inside.

Whatever gifts you decide on, this mom to be is sure to feel the love and enjoy her Valentine’s Day!

Vintage: Peek inside A Celebrity Parent Swag bag

In addition to getting paid oodles of dough for doing the things they love (acting, singing, reality-showing), celebrities are always getting s.w.a.g which  stands for souveniers, wearables and gifts or as my celebrity friends tell me “stuff/s*&% we all get”. The “we” does not usually include the common man or woman.  In sum, various brands, designers and labels love to throw free products at celebrities because of the instant marketing and promotions they’d get if the celebrity is photographed wearing the product or pushing their child in it, (as in the case of strollers and buggies, for example)
Naturally, being fascinated with celebrities like most Americans and others are, folks covet what celebrities have and want to rush out and get the same thing. It’s a no brainer for a brand to get their stuff in one of these bags.
Often times, when celebrities agree to attend a charity event, or are selected to present at an awards show or perform, they get these enormous very valuable gift bags as a thank you.  Sometimes, companies actually have to bid or compete to get their products in the bag. Imagine, having to hire a publicist or agent to get your company’s product in a bag of items to be given away for free! Companies like Jewels and Pinstripes, for example, assemble bags for various events and then scan print and websites for “sightings” of the celebrities actually using the product they got in a bag. What comes next? The brand gets that photo out there and the rest is history, as they say.
Pregnant celebrities and parents also get parenting and children related swag at various gifting suites that are open during and pre major events like The Grammys, The Oscars, The Sundance Film festivals etc. During these events, select brands send representatives to showcase products (its almost convention style) and often times  they give away free samples! Sometimes they permit the celeb to rent the item or wear it for an event with the expectation of returning it.  That is usually the case for gowns and dresses for major events the celeb would likely wear only once anyway.  For smaller, less expensive items, celebrities are allowed to keep the items! Woweee!
If you are fortunate enough to be the baby of a celebrity, the perks start when you are born!
Check out a gift bag  (above) that  Girls in Tinsel Town  gave away to the babies of new celeb moms like Christina Applegate, Emily Procter and Samantha Harris.
The bag contained: Gift certificate for custom Isabelle Grace Jewelry mommy necklace, Gift certificate for Kokopax classic carrier, Gift certificate for Kokopax Diaper Bag, The Patchwork Bear baby clothes bear box kit, Ladybugs and Lullabies boutique hair clips and gift certificate, Diapees and Wipees shoulder bag and signature bag, Gift certificate for personalized Label Out Loud™ Essentials Combo by Mabel’s Labels, Pirose luxury nursing scarf by Reno Rose, Blackout blind for prams and strollers by SnoozeshadeBeba Bean Knit Poncho, Robeez Ballerina Bear slip-ons, Gift certificate for personalized Name Your Tune cd, BooginheadSippiGrip and PaciGrip and an issue of Pregnancy and Newborn Magazine. (Retail Value: $900.00)

10 ocassions when it’s fine to use “Because I said so” as an anwer

Didn’t you used to get annoyed with your folks when you asked them a question as a kid and they responded with “Because I said so”?  These days, the experts will make you feel guilty for brushing off your kid or kids with that excuse, but you know what? There are times when saying “Because I said so” are perfectly appropriate! Nannyjobs.orgs had a funny listing:

  1. When your kid asks why they can’t go swimming in the winter: It’s fine to say something like that it’s too cold or that they would catch a cold, but if they continue to say why then you need to use, “Because I said so, that’s why!”
  2. When the reason to their question is too complicated to explain: Why do I have to wash my hands before dinner?  Your kid is 3 so it probably isn’t going to work to try to explain that germs are bad and by washing they will get rid of most of the germs, but not all of the germs.  Your little one isn’t going to understand the real answer so just tell them because you said so.
  3. When you don’t know the answer: This is the best time to use the statement, “Because I said so, that’s why!”  Your child asks why they have to wash their hands after they sneeze.  You say, because there are germs on your hands and you could make other kids sick.  Why?  I don’t know won’t really cut it at that point.  Just tell them because you said so.
  4. When you don’t want to explain: Your son wants to know why he can’t get an earring or your daughter wants to know why she can’t have the micro mini skirt.  There probably is a good reason that you don’t want them to do those things, but do you really want to explain it?  Just tell them because you said so!
  5. When they don’t want to wear their helmet on their bike: Mommy I don’t want to wear my helmet, it will mess up my hair.  Why do I have to?  Or Daddy, why do I have to wear a helmet when I’m on my bike, none of the other guys do?  Kids think they are invincible and won’t understand so just tell them because you said so.

Thanksgiving Travel: Flying With an Infant: How to Avoid Disaster

With Thanksgiving around the corner and some people opting to fly to visit family during the holidays, our blogger Marc Courtiol, is sharing tips on dealing with flying with an infant:
Having a newborn can be stressful enough without leaving the house, so it is easy to understand why so many new parents are reluctant to travel. Babies need constant care, they are unpredictable, and their crying is sometimes difficult to stop. All of these things work against travel, which requires as much predictability as possible. The good news is that many infants fall right to sleep as soon as the plane starts moving, but you just cannot know beforehand. Plus, nobody wants to be those poor parents stuck on an airplane with a baby who refuses to be quiet. That is no one’s idea of a fun vacation.
But you do not have to be scared to travel with your infant. Sure, things may not go perfectly, but the trip does not have to be a disaster. Here are some ideas to keep in mind.
The right attitude
Start preparing by getting in the right mindset for traveling with an infant. Especially if this is your first child, this may require you to alter your view of the world to some extent. For starters, while it is important to be considerate of others, you simply cannot get hung up on what strangers think about you. There are always going to be curmudgeonly people who bellyache when a crying baby is in their vicinity, and there is nothing we can do about them. So just forget about them and focus on your family.
Also, try to approach the whole thing with a sense of calm. The best way to do this is to take it slow. Give yourself plenty of extra time for everything. If you usually leave for the airport two hours early, give yourself two and a half to three hours this time. Move slowly through the trip, and stop to attend to the baby whenever he or she needs anything. If you can cultivate this sort of attitude, your baby will pick up on it and will likely be more calm.
Plan early
Plan your trip as early as possible so you can reserve seats in an optimal row. Exit-row seats are great because they give you extra room to maneuver with the baby. Also, if you have never traveled with an infant before, you might want to call the airline and talk to a real person about their policies. Your baby should be able to fly for free, but many parents choose to buy a seat for their infant anyway for the extra room. Airplanes are generally a tight fit, but a full three-seater in an exit row can be a cozy little temporary home for mommy, daddy, and baby.
Knowing what to bring
When flying with a newborn, the key is to bring as few things as possible while having everything you need to take care of your baby. It can be difficult to find this balance. Here are some things that you definitely need:

A few changes of clothes (bring a couple more than you reasonably expect you will need)
An item or two, especially a blanket or stuffed animal, that smells of home and reminds the baby of safe, comfortable places
Diaper-changing supplies, including a changing pad, sanitizing wipes, and multiple extra diapers
Pastic bags for storing soiled baby clothes
Cloths to wipe spit-up and other substances
If you are breastfeeding, bring a bottle with a little extra milk in case the baby needs to be fed at an inopportune time for breastfeeding.
Other than these crucial items, keep what you pack to a minimum. If your child is a newborn, then she is probably too young to need any books or toys to keep her occupied.
Be prepared to carry
If you have a baby carrier, make sure you have it ready, as maneuvering through the airport, especially the security section, is much easier if the baby is strapped to you rather than in a stroller. Of course, it is fine to bring the stroller on your trip, but treat it like a piece of luggage until you pick it up at your destination.

On the flight, it is fine to keep the baby with you if you have not reserved an extra seat. If you do have an extra seat for the baby, you of course cannot have her sitting on it when the craft is in motion. That is why the airlines recommend bringing your infant car seat and strapping it in if you are not going to be holding the baby through the entire flight. If you do not have too much other luggage, brining that seat is a good idea.

How Ciara lost 60lbs in baby weight after four months

By now, readers of this blog know my severe disdain for commercial, media and brand messaging that push an unrealistic ideal when it comes to post-baby weight loss. It’s destructive because it sets up regular women who have jobs, other kids at home, family obligations and who don’t have the resources and funds to afford private chefs, personal trainers and home delivery meals into thinking that if they haven’t done the same, they are failures.
Well singer Ciara was the latest celebrity to make a massive post-baby weight loss claim directly, not through a salacious tabloid, as we usually see.  She seems to be promoting a campaign to push Calvin Klein underwear, in a couple of super hot photos she posted on her Instagram account Friday.
Ciara is a longtime celebrity spokesperson/model for the brand.
“After Delivering My Son I Feel Like There’s Nothing I Can’t Do. I Feel Like I Can Conquer The World. #ANewMe #NewMusic. So Proud To Rock #mycalvins 60lbs later!!” she wrote in the caption space about the above photo.
Ciara gave birth to son Future Zahir Wilburn on May 19th and apparently spent all her life in the gym after to get her body back to tip top shape, and drop that much amount of weight that fast. That is tremendous even if the average woman instantly loses about 10 or so from the baby, placenta, and fluids from post-delivery drop in water from  bloating.

I feel so proud to say that 4 months after delivering a 9 lbs. 10 oz. baby, I can finally rock My Calvin’s! #mycalvins

@-webkit-keyframes”dkaXkpbBxI”{ 0%{opacity:0.5;} 50%{opacity:1;} 100%{opacity:0.5;} } @keyframes”dkaXkpbBxI”{ 0%{opacity:0.5;} 50%{opacity:1;} 100%{opacity:0.5;} }

“I feel so proud to say that 4 months after delivering a 9 lbs. 10 oz. baby, I can finally rock My Calvin’s! #mycalvins,” the “Get Up” singer captioned this one.
She gave some insight into her motivation to US Weekly
“You go from the mommy gym at home to the real gym and then you go to the stage,” she said. “For me it’s all about not only getting back into the place that I was in before. I had a baby but now, going even further.”
She added, “I want to be one of those moms and women that when I look back, I know that I always stayed focused. And I think it’s about keeping your eyes on the prize.”
Her celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson shared some of her secrets.
“When you say she’s working out every day, that sounds like it’s crazy but it’s not,” he told People magazine last month. “It’s a ritual. She’s showering every day too. She’s not destroying herself.”
He added: “She’s working hard, she’s getting it done, she’s eating properly, she’s getting sleep while she can, and so she’s getting leaner and stronger.”
The fitness guru explained that her workouts are far from the ordinary.
“Depending on where we are in the week, there’s a focus on pushing movements, pulling movements; there’s lower body, there’s working different planes of motion, whether it’s front to back, side to side rotation,” he stated. “It’s about keeping her moving…There are a lot of intervals in there. It doesn’t make for a happy camper, but [it produces] great results. You see the body, she’s already right there.”
Based on this commentary, it looks as if she really did it the hard way and not through post birth surgery as with Kim Zolciak, and others.
Bonus: If you watch the WE TV show, you may know that Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Tamar Braxton-Herbert’s  sister Trina accused her of getting post baby liposuction and it erupted in a  major fight with Tamar denying the allegation. phew!

Online Negotiating Maternity Leave & Transitioning Back to Work Course: A look behind the Series

We sat down with the instructor behind the new online course designed to help new mothers negotiate their maternity leave and transition back smoothing to work. Course creator Neneh Diallo hopes the class with instruct women on how to negotiate what works best for them and their specific employer and other strategies for work-life balance. She is launching it as part of the new Moms With Dreams University, an online platform that empowers mom with life and work skills.
Crucially, this mom of three, including twins, will instruct students on how to create work-life balance, identify and overcome that dreaded and omnipresent “mom guilt.”  We know many veteran moms which there was a course like this around when they were transitioning back to work.  If you’re a new mom, first time mom-to-be in the working world, or even a seasoned mom, first time in the position of having to transition back to work, you’re in luck.
Diallo gives us some insight on how the online course (which starts this Tuesday, October 7 and cost a very reasonable $299) came about and its goals for students:
When did you come up with the idea for the class?
When I was about to go on maternity leave with my first child I had no idea what to expect.  Of course I had questions about how I would be a mother, how I would interact with her.  What my new life would be like.  However, it dawned on me that I had no clue what that life would be like once I went back to work.
I remembered my older sister went back to work six weeks after delivering her first child.  I thought that was ridiculous!  You are just getting into your routine and bonding with the baby and then snap! – time to go back to work? I had to think about that.
So I sat down and came up with a plan that I thought would work for me and my boss.  I had to make sure that this was a win for him as well.  He couldn’t feel as though he was losing an employee – and being that women can be perceived as “changed” and “unfocused” when they become mothers, I had to make sure he knew that I had put some thought into it.
When I returned I was the first one who started to telecommute on a regular basis once a week.  That was unheard of in my organization.
Since then, women about to go on maternity leave have come to me for advice on how to transition out and back into work.  They seek advice on how I was able to balance my two worlds – I also got a double promotion when I returned from maternity because I had a work plan that demonstrated my work and my worth.
Other women wanted to know my secret, so now I’m ready to share it with a wider audience and show them how they can do it all.  Since then, I’ve had twins so there’s a plan for that to!
What will the typical curriculum look like?
The first week will talk about negotiating skills.  So many women don’t negotiate well because we feel like we don’t deserve to ask for what we want.  I share techniques that will help women feel like they can ask for what they deserve and not feel guilty about it. Students will also get tips on how to get the work-life balance that works.
And let me say this up front – ‘balance’ doesn’t exist.  It just doesn’t.  You have to prioritize and decide what is going to get done now and what can wait for later.
We’ll also discuss strategies to stay relevant in the workplace.  Let’s remove the “mommy brain” dialogue and refocus your supervisor to recognize you as a valued, contributing team member and make them respect your boundaries.  There are so many women I know who go home after working 10 hour days, take care of their kids and husbands and then log on again from 9-11pm.  So guess what happens? Your boss will start expecting that of you and sees that you are available at all times even when you should probably be spending that time with your husband, reading a book, or watching Scandal!
What is the typical student you anticipate, like who is the course designed for?
One would assume that this course is just for new working mothers.  However, I must say that seasoned moms can also take this course because life really does change when you have more than one child.  Your goals may change and your expectations on yourself ans a mother and worker may change too.
After the birth of my twins I now had four children with completely different needs.  I had to adjust my work schedule. I had to set new parameters around when I would be available.
And I made a career switch because I knew that my current career was not suitable to my new priorities and a change needed to happen.  And I was able to get everything I wanted while staying with a company whose mission I still wanted t be a part of. This course if for new and seasoned moms will walk away learning more about themselves and what they want than they even realized.
How does one register for the class?
To register for the class, students need to sign up on http://bit.ly/ZhMAnm . It is an easy to use platform for live presentations.

Tell me about your qualifications to teach the class?
I am a trained executive coach. I received my training from Presence-Based Coaching, an International Coaching Federation accredited institution. And more importantly, I’ve received my Ph,D as a mother of four kids 🙂
Can someone sign up after classes have begun?
The goal is for students to receive live instruction, but if someone can’t start until the 2nd class and they want to register, they would receive the recording for the first class.
What has been the reaction response been?
Women are excited.  They’ve told me that they have never heard of a class like this being offered and that it would be a great resource.
I encourage you to go sign up! http://bit.ly/ZhMAnm
