Serena Williams Bumped it Up Regally at the 2017 Met Ball

Serena Williams made her red carpet debut at the 2017 Met Gala. The tennis champ graced the annual event thrown by the Costume Institute at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in a green, draped Versace dress accented with an Audemars Piguet watch, and XIV Karats earrings.

This was also the first time that Williams appeared officially and publicly with her fiance Alexis Ohanian since announcing they were expecting.

The two posed on the regal red carpet of the event, which was officially co-chaired by Vogue editor-in-chief for life Anna Wintour, Katy Perry and  Pharrell Williams.

This year celebrates the life and work of designer Rei Kawakubo. All attendees were encouraged to come dressed in clothing inspired by the Japanese designer’s exhibit,  Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.

Last night marked the official opening of the exhibit at the gallery as every year.

We Now Know Why Serena Williams Deleted Her Pregnant Snap Right Away

serena-gail

During an interview with Gayle King recently at the Ted Talks conference on Tuesday in Vancouver Canada,  Serena Williams said that she did not mean to make a pregnancy announcement on Snapchat.

Rather, she explained, she was doing one of her personal weekly pregnancy progression photo for her own documentation using her phone but accidentally hit the “share” button. Oops!

“I was on vacation just taking some time for myself and I have this thing where I’ve been checking my status and taking pictures every week to see how far along I’m going,” the 23-time Tennis Grand Slam chat said. “I didn’t tell a lot of people to be quite honest and I’d been saving it,” Williams said about staying mum about being preggers. “On social media, you press the wrong button and… Thirty minutes later I missed four calls and I’m like, ‘That’s weird.’ ”

That explains why she rapidly deleted the snap afterwards. She was totally caught off guard. Some had speculated that perhaps she wasn’t pregnant but was just toying with her fans and followers. But the business woman and Nike brand ambassador said she was set to tell the news anyway.

“But it was a good moment. I was only going to wait five or six more days [to share].” she added.

This week, her fiance, Alex Ohanian, who is the co-founder of Reddit released his own official pregnancy announcement that featured an Reddit avatar of himself and Serena, with the caption, “A new Snoo is on the way!” He was referencing the Reddit brand mascot which is a little alien called Snoo.

Serena Williams Pens Letter to Her Baby; Responds to Racist Comment by Tennis Legend

serena

Tennis star Serena Williams took to Instagram this week to share a tender letter she has to her soon-to-be born first child with fiance Alex Ohanian. It was a super sweet gesture from the 23-time Tennis Grand Slam champ.

The note, which accompanied a photo of herself in a bikini top and sarong, presumably from a beach babymoon she’s on with her beau, read:

My Dearest Baby,

You gave me the strength I didn’t know I had. You taught me the true meaning of serenity and peace. I can’t wait to meet you. I can’t wait for you to join the players box next year. But most importantly, I am so happy to share being number one in the world with you…. once again today. On @alexisohanian bday. ? from the world’s oldest number one to the world’s youngest number one. -Your Mommy

A day later, the mom-to-be left a message reacting to a mean, and arguably racist, remark by tennis legend Ilie Nastase who responded upon hearing the news that Williams and her white fiance are expecting, reacted during a news conference last Friday, by saying in his native Romanian  language, “Let’s see what color it has. Chocolate with milk?”

In her note, also posted on Instagram, Williams wrote:

“It disappoints me to know we live in a society where people like Ilie Nastase can make such racist comments towards myself and unborn child, and sexist comments against my peers,” Williams wrote in an Instagram post.

“I have said it once and I’ll say it again, this world has come so far but yet we have so much further to go….

“I am not afraid unlike you. You see, I am no coward. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? You may shoot me with your words … you may try to kill me with your hatefulness, but still like air, I rise.”

The last part is a quote form  Maya Angelou’s famous poem, “Still I Rise.”

Smart and classy come back Serena. We would expect nothing less.

So Sports Bookies Are Already Taking Bets On Serena Williams’ Fetus, Really!

serena-williams-instagram-photo-fiance-alexis-ohanian

Serena Williams has barely enjoyed a day of the world knowing that she is expecting her first child with fiance Reddit co-founder Alex Ohanian and the bookies are already in her taking bets on her little bambino.

BetOnline.ag, one of the world’s online betting sportsbook site has folks gambling on things like the first letter of the baby’s first name, its gender, weight and whether the 23-time Tennis Grand Slam champ will have twins or triplets!

There is a term for betting on something tangentially related to a sports game, “propositional bet,” concerning an “occurrence or non-occurrence” not directly affecting a game’s outcome. Since Serena is actively training for any tournament, this is very very propositional.

When Beyonce performed during one of the Super Bowls, bookies took bets on whether she’d have a wardrobe malfunction and have one of her boobs exposed. Seriously. This is not a game. ha!

If you want to get in on the fun but with your own impending arrival or one of a family or friend, you can start an online pool using a site like Baby Bookie.

This isn’t new for pregnant celebrities either. When Kate Middleton was expecting her first child, her unknown due date kept the booking business popping then too.

People will bet on anything if they love to gamble!

Wow!

Congrats!

The event called the Inaugural Wearable Art Gala raised $1M, according to a recent post  by Beyonce. It is reminiscent of the Met Ball, which also encourages attendees to wear artistic renditions of clothing or vice versa, wear art like clothes.

Meanwhile, Bey released the collector’s edition of her multi-award winning visual album, “Lemonade.” The box set will set you back $300 but it comes with behind the scenes photos, prints of Beyonce’s personal hand written notes drafted during the creation of the project and much more.

9 Moms Competed in 2020 US Open Tennis, Mom Victoria Azarenka Wins Runner Up

This year’s US Open featured nine mothers, the most ever in tournament history.

Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Tsvetana Pironkova made the final rounds and Kim Clijsters, Vera Zvonareva, Tatjana Maria, Olga Govortsova, Kateryna Bondarenko and Patricia Maria Tig were formidable opponents in the early rounds.

Williams is featured in a lot of campaigns that celebrate woment’s professional tennis players who are mothers

And this year, there has been a lot of celebration of semi-finalist Azarenka who gave birth of her son, Leo, after winning back to back Australian Opens titles in 2012 and 2013.

She once thought pregnancy would end her career.

When asked about her come back durind the press conference after the 27 seed upset fellow Belarusianto, 5th seed  Aryna Sabalenka , she said:

“Pretty incredible, huh?”

“Well, there is a lot that goes into it in terms of balancing, you know, a lot of things, and juggling two things.

“But identifying myself or other players just as mothers, I think that’s not the only thing that we are. I think we are part of, you know, being a mother, we are also tennis players. We are also women who have dreams and goals and passions.

“So that’s, I think, being a role as a mom. Everybody has their own priority, they have their own list of where they rank being a mother is, but we are not – it’s not just being a mother. Your life doesn’t stop.”

She had custody battles with her son’s dad and had to overcome several injuries and other personal issues to almost triumph once again.

And finally, she has joined Williams as a leader and advocate for fellow female competitors:

Last year, Azarenka and Williams, along with Venus Williams, Johanna Konta and several other stars, successfully campaigned for the introduction of improved ranking protection for expectant mothers playing on the circuit.

Prior to the 2019 season, female players had to return from giving birth or injury within three years to be able to utilize a special ranking for eight tour events in a year.

However, this year, players returning from childbirth or injury can use their previously held ranking to enter up to 12 tournaments during a three-year period.

They will also not be required to face a seeded player in the first round of a tournament. Azarenka said: “We have the power to change the rules and we have done.” The 29-year-old says that “is what [she] wants [her] legacy to be”.

Azarenka, Williams, Clisters and all the moms are proving that mothers can do it all.

Kim Clijsters won three of her 4 Grand Slams after the birth of her child.

Lindsay Davenport won 3 of her 55 Career titles after giving birth to her son.

And Olympic Gold medalist and seven times Grand slam winner, in 1914, Dorothea Lambert Chambers became the first mother to win a Grand Slam crown.

Gold Medalist Nia Ali Wants Wins After Baby to Inspire Female Athletes

Motherhood took center stage again at the World Athletics Championships  when US Gold Medaling hurdler Nia Ali celebrated her win in the Women’s 100 meter hurdles with her two children 4-year-old son Titus and 16-month-old daughter Yuri  who joined her victory lap in Doha, Qatar, Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019.

She is the latest among several elite Track and Field athletes this year and in recent years to have major comebacks after having a baby to win prizes and spots on top of the winners’ podium. Their wins echo the great successes of  FIFA World Cup champion US Women’s Soccer Team and new mom Tennis Champ Serena Williams proving that female athletes can do it all, despite some who insist they retire after motherhood.

Ali hopes her medals after baby sends a message to other female Track athletes.

nia ali with son 2016

In 2016, after winning the Silver Medal, Ali tlalked about  how men can build their families and continue training and  winning “without missing a beat”. She said she wants to encourage women to do the same and know that having a family “is also a very important part of  your life…it can also make you a stronger competitor” and “build your character.”

She added, of motherhood: “It has made me stronger, has given me more dedication, and who knows if I had this edge had I not had a child last  year….I want more women to embrace having a family and not look at it as a burden or it might throw them off their game, or they won’t come back.”

Boy has this crop of champions proven wrong the perception that mother hood is a career killer in track and field.

Felix, who became a mother last November, also won gold last weekend in the new event, mixed relay, and now has 13 total – two more than the record she shared with Jamaica’s Usain Bolt.

His country mate Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica also won two golds. China’s Liu Hong picked up a gold in the race walk and  Alysia Montano, a mother of two who was part of the Nike movement along with Felix, went to the Championships to collect two bronze medals reallocated to her following 2011 and 2013 doping scandals from 2011 and 2013.

“When I found out I was pregnant, I was a wreck… people asked me to retire gracefully,” Fraser-Pryce said in a post win interview.

In a new Associated Press article, Ali told one story about having to break from training in Europe recently so she could head home for a parent-teacher conference for Titus, who is in preschool.

“It was important for me to be there and get a good feel of what he’s going to have to go through this year,” Ali said.

Ali’s boyfriend is Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse.

Celebrity Trend: Naming Baby Girls Junior After Dad

Hmmm… Is this a trend of celebrities naming their baby girls after their dads?

Could be! As the institutional memory in celebrity pregnancy online content, I have noticed a pattern.

Vanessa and Kobe Bryant chose to name their newest arrival, daughter Capri Kobe Bryant.

Two years ago, tennis ace and newest Wheaties box cover model Serena Williams named her daughter after her husband, who famously has a name that is usually given to a girl anyway: Alexis.

Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr. is named after dad, Reddit co-founder and investor Alexis Ohanian. (She boasts over a half a million followers on Instagram)

Similarly, NBA star Imani Shumpert has a unisex first name that usually is given to girls and thus it’s not a stretch to have his daughter with singer, model and dancer Teyana Taylor be named Imani Shumpert, Jr. (though she is affectionately nicknamed “Junebug” and has 444K followers)

I must admit, the “Junior” at the end adds an extra layer of “kicking conventionality in the buttocks” to me! Gotta love it!

Who else? Add to the list and join the convo at @Bellyitch on Facebook under this post!
