2017 BET Awards Trends: 90s Comebacks, Africa, Platinum Blonde and Babies

collage-picmonkey-s-photo-editor-free-online-image-editing

The 2017 BET Awards went down at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. I confess that I only got a chance to catch the end as I was heading to the beach to celebrate my eldest kid’s birthday and didn’t settle in to our suite until the show was well into its fourth and final hour! But I must say, that I thorougly enjoyed the singing chops of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Tamar Braxton who did an excellent job performing her new song, “My Man” on stage.

Tameka Tiny Cottles Harris, LaTocha and Tamika Scott and Kandi Burruss of 1990s girl group Xscape reuniting soon for a tour

Sadly, I missed a couple of our other bumpwatch alums, Kandi Buruss and Tameka “Tiny” Harris perform with their 1990s R&B girl group, Xscape

img_7715

The duo joined fellow members LaTocha Scott and Tamika Scott in a medley of their hits on stage since breaking up as a group 18 years ago. It was the first of two explosive 90s R&B performances. The New Edition tribute and performances later blew me away!

Xscape will document their work as they prepare to perform at the 2017 Essence Festival. The docuseries, titled Xscape: Still Kickin’ It, premieres this fall on Bravo.

WATCH:

I noticed some fashion and hair trends beginning with the blunt platinum bob LaTocha Scott and Braxton wore. Singer-Actress Kat Graham who plays Jada Pinkett-Smith in the new movie All Eyez on Me, rapper and star of Love & Hip Hop: New York Cardi B and our other bumpwatch alum Blac Chyna  all did the blunt blonde bob.

And platinum blonde, in general,  had a big showing  on Tiny’s daughter Zonnique, who is also a recording-artist. She wore her hair in that shade as did Lateysha Grace, a German transplant who has been on three seasons of MTV show The Valleys.

Clockwise: Lateysha Grace, Zonnique, Cardi B and Blac Chyna in platinum blonde hair.

It was also cool to see so many parents bring their children to the show. DJ Khaled actually brought his son Asahad on stage with him during his performance. It reminded me of all the NBA babies at their dads’ games.

Jamie Foxx had his daughter Annalise help him present on stage and Future got his daughter Londyn a matching bedazzled mask to wear in honor of his popular new single “Mask Off” which he later performed that night with a cameo from Kenderick Lamar. Another big winner was Chance the Rapper whose mom accompanied him to the show.

Speaking of Winners. Beyonce was a BIG winner taking home the most awards for Best Female R&B Performer, Viewers’ Choice, Video of the Year for her song “Sorry” (which tied with Bruno Mars) and is off her album Lemonade, which one for Album of the Year.  The director for “Sorry” won the for Best Director.

Her sister Solange  took home the Centric Award for her song “Cranes in the Sky” which also earned the star her first Grammy award earlier in the year.  Besides Solange, we spotted a few of our other Bumpwatch alums at the event including Keyshia Cole.

Speaking of Blac Chyna and Amber Rose. The two of them once famously attended back to back awards shows in 2015 hand in hand but last night came with other people, Chyna with other people.

We frequently spotlight what mom LaLa Anthony wears on arrival carpets and she did not disappoint.

Not a mom, but I love Yvette Nicole Brown‘s look and my African sister Issa Rae from her hit HBO Insecure.

I also want to shout out other aspects of Africa represented last night in the strapless Ankara  (West African) dresses worn by beauty blogger Jennie Jenkins and The Color Purple veteran actress  Margaret Avery and actress Nomzamo Mbatha‘s South African print trimmed dress and in South Sudanese model Duckie Thot, Sudanse vlogger Nikki Perkins and Afro German soap opera actress  Sandra Lambeck.

Purchase of This Backpack Gives Back TWO-Fold to Kids In Need

unnamed-1

We love social good initiatives that help children and families and that’s why we’re happy to report about innovative company whose entire business model is centered on helping kids in need.

Sydney Paige is woman-owned company that makes very sturdy, cute and practical backpacks, school accessories and books and partners with worthy causes to donate a matching product for each sold. That way customers know their purchases will have a philanthropic effect as well.

This month, Sydney Paige is teaming up with an inspiring nonprofit, Rainbow Pack. This organization was started by founder Riley Joy Gantt when she was just ten years old and is dedicated to providing elementary school students with educational tools they need to be successful learners irrespective of their financial circumstances.

It’s a big deal because Sydney Paige is upping the donation match this round from its traditional one purchase/one donation model.

unnamed

Sydney Paige has agreed to donate two of their premium backpacks for every bag purchased while Rainbow Pack has committed to fill all bags with their very own ‘homework’ supplies. This is a major twist to Sydney Paige’s Buy One/Give one mantra as they have implemented a Buy One/Give TWO model.

And the packs are also good for another very important thing: the environment. Sydney Paige backpacks are made from eco-friendly materials of 100% cotton canvas, natural leather, nickel free hardware and/or recycled polyester.

We know because we got a chance to check one out up close and personal: the Guidi Laptop Rucksack which actually helps Matthew McConaughey and his wife, our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Camila Alves McConaughey’s nonprofit just keep livin foundation.  This nonprofit works with local non-profits to run after school fitness and wellness programs in inner-city high schools and the results have been incredible! Participants get in shape and gain confidence while also improving their grades, attendance and behavior.

buy-bag

My daughter GiGi (pictured below) headed off to school with a pack provided complimentary of the company in exchange for the review. Indeed, the material was quality and the hardware was durable. It is light weight and not too heavy. A lot of back packs weigh a lot even while empty but after a child adds their books and perhaps a laptop or other tablet in there, it can be very hard for him or her to carry.

12b4fa2a-65d6-4a19-9d1d-35f68ba5a133

The price point is medium at $95 but when you consider that the pack will also be used in charity, it becomes worth the investment. When you know that your purchase will actually help another person, and in this case another child, it moves it closer to the basket of other forms of active philanthropy.

It’s definitely a product we can support and get behind! kudos to Sydney Paige, Rainbow Packs, the just keep livin’ foundation and others working to help make positive impacts in the lives of more children.

How Olivia Culpo’s Marchesa Water Dress helps Charity

HOLLYWOOD, CA – FEBRUARY 26: Actor Olivia Culpo unveils a one-of-a-kind Marchesa for Stella Artois gown featuring beads made from the Stella Artois Limited-Edition Chalices that benefit Water.org during the 89th Annual Academy Awards at Hollywood & Highland Center on February 26, 2017 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)

Actress and former beauty queen Olivia Culpo’s Oscar red carpet dress will help provide clean water to children in the developing world.

How?

The former Miss USA and Miss Universe 2012 teamed up with our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Georgina Chapman to design the dress made up of a chalice.

“It’s in partnership with Stella Artois and Water.org,” the star of The Other Woman  told Ryan Secrest on the red carpet. “Stella Artois created chalices and for one chalice sold, five years of clean drinking water is provided for someone in the developing world. So this dress is actually made out of the chalice pieces, and it’s encouraging people to get involved in the water crisis and buy the chalice.”

And it is a stunning masterpiece. It even flows like water.

“We wanted the dress to represent water itself, so it’s sort of cascading,” she explained. “The crystal represents the water as well. We knew we wanted tears.”

She continued, “They did an amazing job…and it’s fun when you can incorporate good things and charity into fashion!”

Nice!

Powerful Working Women Have Work Nurseries; How to Build Your Own

powerful-working-women

This week, First Daughter Ivanka Trump shared a photo of herself holding her baby Theodore while taking a business call in the White House. The image drew tons of love and praise and jeers and taunts. Some called it an example of feminism and others called it hypocrisy. Politics is a tricky game and these days, they are at a fever pitch. But politics aside, the topic of balancing work and motherhood is an ongoing hot bed issue.

Trump and Marissa Mayer both infamously announced plans to take short maternity leaves after having their babies but each soon learned that it is very difficult to have it all, and they reversed course. Fortunately for each of these women, they are the boss and therefore, they have tons of options.

Mayer, for example, built a nursery alongside her office so she could have easy access to her infant, whom I believe she was breastfeeding at the time. It was a controversial move because it came around the same time that the ex-CEO of Yahoo! banned telecommuting for her workers. Many women (and men) with children loved that option so they could work and care for their little ones.

My mom watches my baby sister’s 10-month old daughter while my sis works and my mom reports the baby not wanting to go to her mom after work. Having a baby nearby for those early years are crucial for bonding and the emotions of having your baby prefer a nanny and caregiver over his own mom could be devastating for any mother.

nursery office

I really did what another Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum, Rachel Zoe, did for the women who works for her. Zoe said in a blog post on her The Zoe Report website that five other women in her company were expecting in 2014.

“I found out they were all expecting within the span of a couple months (something’s in the water here, I swear), and my immediate thought was: We need to open a nursery. We might not be styling out of my garage anymore, but I still think of my staff as family,” Zoe wrote. “I wanted to create an environment where these new mothers wouldn’t have to make a choice between career and motherhood. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to grow my company from just a few people to more than 40 while having my kids (and my husband) by my side, and so I knew I had to do everything in my power to give my staff that same luxury.”

It was a great move by a woman in power who wanted to empower other women too.

321c70d4d0feffc0f2b40f2f6621c1bd

“My days are filled with an assortment of photo shoots and school pickups, business meetings and play dates, styling sessions and grocery runs. I am launching style boxes and boxing school lunches.” she penned. “In the words of Penny Lane (eternal muse to my editors), ‘It’s all happening.’ And if I can bring my babies to editorial meetings (it happens), fashion shows (guilty) and designers’ parties (most fun ever), why can’t my girls have their babies close by too?”

Zoe opened a nursery in her West Hollywood office that December right next door to her studio. She said she thought all companies ought to consider the same.

“Sure it required us to make additional investments—the physical space, the insurance required to protect everyone, the furnishings—but what we are getting in return is invaluable; the working mothers at our company can improve and grow our business without having to sacrifice spending precious time with their babies at such a crucial stage in their mother-child relationships.”

800px-baby_nursery_room

Bravo! In the course of two years, my eldest son had two different teachers check out after having their babies and my youngest lost two teachers who opted to stay home after having their little ones rather than return. Nearby nurseries could be a great alternative for those who want to continue their craft, passion and work and be near their babies.

And for those, like me, who work from home, a nursery office could be a great alternative. Here are the elements of creating a fab home office/nursery.

Start with a space-saving crib that isn’t too bulky! You can get one that coordinates with the furniture already in your office or redecorate to have one cohesive theme.

Fill the walls with colorful and attractive wall art to lift the mood and keep things vibrant and alive!

Finally, accent it with  a colorful or ‘in-theme- rug where baby can play while you work. A toy chest to house rattles, stuffed animals and educational toys would be a great added fixture.

Good luck!

Super Bowl Showdown: Gisele Bundchen versus the ATL Divas

new-england-patriots

The big game is tomorrow evening. Who are you rooting for? The 4x Super Bowl champions New England Patriots or the Atlanta Falcons. I know for certain our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Gisele Bundchen will be Team Patriots. After all, she is married to its longtime famed quarterback Tom Brady.

I’m not for certain, but I will take a guess that the scores of other celebs we’ve “bumpwatched” who live in the Atlanta area will be cheering for their home team.

Phaedra Parks, Kandi Burruss, Eudoxie Agnan, Ciara, Keshia Knight-Pulliam, Rasheeda and Tamara Braxton-Herbert all hail from the ATL.

Which Designers Dressed the Celeb Moms of the 2017 Golden Globe Red Carpet

yellow-golden-globe

We love to keep track of the celeb moms that we covered on the blog while they were expecting their respective bambinos when we spot them on the red carpet at award shows and other former industry events.

This past Sunday, we spotted a ton of Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums and they all looked great! Some, like currently expecting Natalie Portman (in Prada), Kerry Washington (in Dolce & Gabbana and clutch, Sophia Webster shoes, and Niwaka jewelry); and Viola Davis  (above in sunny yellow Michael Kors Collection dress, Stuart Weitzman shoes, Harry Winston jewels, and Judith Leiber clutch.) were nominated, and Davis won for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in the movie “Fences”.

Others like, Reese Witherspoon (in Atelier Versace with Tiffany & Co. jewelry, Christian Louboutin shoes, and a Tyler Ellis clutch.) presented on stage.

We, like many other fashion sites and bloggers, noticed some clear trends such as the Yellow trend. Also, there were a lot of women in metallics on the carpet as well.

golden-globe-mettalics

We also saw a lot of very deep cut neckline and a few like Thandie Newton ( in a gorgeous white Monse dress with metallic train, Harry Winston jewelry, and Jimmy Choo shoes., Drew Barrymore ( in a Monique Lhuillier dress, Stuart Weitzman shoes, and Harry Winston jewelry.); Felicity Huffman (in Georges Chakra jumpsuit, Martin Katz jewelry, and Christian Louboutin shoes) and Blake Lively ( in and Atelier Versace dress, Christian Louboutin shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.)

It’s Golden Globes Weekend and the Party’s Already Started (GET THE LOOK!)

golden-globes-2017

It’s Golden Globes weekend which means tons of opportunities for Hollywood’s A-Listers and elites to hobnob with one another at various events, pre- and after-parties.

We spotted at least four of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums working the “red carpet” at the The Art of Elysium presents Stevie Wonder‘s HEAVEN – Celebrating the 10th Anniversary at Red Studios yesterday, on Saturday, January 7, 2017 in Los Angeles, California.

Kristen Bell opted for a gorgeous copper-colored sleeveless sequined gown by Maria Lucia Hohan and gold Charlotte Olympia heels and clutch.

Chrissy Tegien was radiant in a white Tiered Ruffle Long Sleeve Lace Dress by Jonathan Simkhai. Ashlee Simpson Ross too wore a black lace dress by the same designer, which she accented with smokey eye and a black choker for a Gothic look.

Jaime King went with a lace Altuzarra slip dress, Jimmy Choo shoes, a Sophia Webster clutch, Vhernier earrings, and a Tacori ring.

They all looked fab and all the dresses were off the rack! Get them here:

This Week, What Kellyanne Conway and Jennifer Lopez Have in Common

img_20161222_190902

What does Donald Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway and Jennifer Lopez have in common?

Both, this week, gave up high profile opportunities for their children.

Incoming US President Donald Trump offered Conway the job as his press secretary and she turned it down because she put her family first.

“Before I can accept that job, I have to recognize that I’m a mother of four children who are at very tender, very fraught ages — 12, 12, 8 and 7 — and I can’t just say, ‘Oh, but they’ll be OK,'” she told the New York Times.  “Someone else will take care of them.”

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez canceled a New Year’s Eve performance to be with her kids and family too.

The super busy performer, dancer, actress and recording artist canceled a $1M gig at the Miami E11even, citing wanting “personal and family time,” her rep told People. Lopez, our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum is mom to 8-year old twins Mad and Emme with husband Marc Anthony.

Of course, for both rejections, there are many disappointed people but bravo and kudos for family first, mama bears!

Inside Joseline Hernandez’s Baby Shower

joseline-hernandez

Reality TV cast member of the VH1 show Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta Joseline Hernandez had her baby shower this weekend and it was a well-attended affair. From images on social media, the theme colors included pink and gold for Hernandez’s daughter, who she has chosen to name Bonnie Bella.

The event featured several cakes including a baby carriage cake and a cake of a live birth! Wow! yeah. Sounds like the event was lit!

This weekend, media reports indicate that Grammy-award winning producer Stevie J finally accepted and confirmed paternity of the soon-to-be born child. He was a no show at the event which actually featured strippers. Wow! I can’t keep up but Inquisitor did a pretty comprehensive round up of the drama here!

Here are more pics from vendors and sponsors of the event that was also taped for a Vh1 special about the final months and delivery.

Our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Yandy Smith was there too!

The after is almost ready ……….. #wedothis

camilla-luddington-camillaluddington-%e2%80%a2-instagram-photos-and-videos

Katherinie Heigl isn’t the only Grey’s Anatomy series actress to be expecting.

Though Heigl has long since left the show, current star Camilla Luddington, who plays Jo Wilson on the long-time hit ABC TV show, and her actor boyfriend Matt Alan are too.

Luddington posted a baby bump progression selfie on her Instagram page, one week after making an announcement on that account.

The British star is also known for portraying another one of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums, Duchess Catherine of Cambridge, in Lifetime TV‘s movie William & Kate: The Movie.

This will be the first child for both.  Luddington’s upcoming arrival will be the first child for her and her boyfriend, actor played Kate Middleton in the Lifetime TV film
