Anthony Bourdain, Kate Spade: A Message For Those Contemplating Suicide and Wanting to Help Others In Distress

Today, we learned of the passing of author, chef, cooking ambassador, storyteller and overall amazing person Anthony Bourdain to suicide. His death bookends a week when we got wind of the tragic passing of designer Kate Spade also to suicide.

Earlier this month, famed Swedish DJs Avicci also took his own life. They join the millions of other non famous people or lesser known who succumb to their inner turmoil, or the effects of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or other mental anguish and issues.

If there is one thing that can be learned from these deaths, it is that depression and mental illness have no one look.  Those suffering may wear a mask or normally or  a smile , while suffering silently.

Depression can be concealed, and can be happening to those near and dear to us, right under our noses.

You never know what demon or issues people are dealing with, so check in on your friends, family and neighbors once in a while.

Look for Warning Signs. Help Someone.

So it’s a good time to remind ourselves to reach out to those personally around us if we notice mood and behavior changes, letting their appearance go, dropping out of school or hobbies, avoiding friends, not sleeping well, or a big change in mood, reach out. Let them know someone cares and you are there for them.

If there has been a life altering episode, or another situation that leads to extreme emotional stress. Heed to warning signs that someone may be suffering with depression.

If  you have had suicidal thoughts, Please Stay.

If you are reading this, and you have had suicidal thoughts, and are dealing with so much sadness, loneliness or other anxiety that you feel you cannot cope any longer with the pain, please remember that “this too shall pass.”

“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us,” Alexander Graham Bell famously said.

An unknown author quipped, “Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the mountain.”

It may be really hard to come to grip with the grande scheme of life and your perspective may be skewed right now because of how you are feeling, but trust me when I say, there is a light and hope and happiness waiting for you on earth.

Find someone to talk to and if you don’t feel you can open up with some there is always the National suicide prevention hotline  for US residents (Internationally for others) where you can get help and  guidance, and perhaps a referral to some place where you can get personal, confidential counseling at no cost too.

There is good and beauty everywhere.

Try to concentrate on the positive things about yourself and your life. Make plans this weekend to get away and have some fun. Splurge on a manicure or facial. Enjoy the weather and if it’s raining, check out some movies you’ve never seen. There are so many out there you haven’t watched.

You cannot end it all now. (smile)

Live for another day. Survive this.

For those who want to know how to help someone, here are some tips from the National Suicide Prevention organization for you to keep in mind.

Know the Risk Factors

Risk factors are characteristics that make it more likely that someone will consider, attempt, or die by suicide. They can’t cause or predict a suicide attempt, but they’re important to be aware of.

•Mental disorders, particularly mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, and certain personality disorders

•Alcohol and other substance use disorders

•Hopelessness

•Impulsive and/or aggressive tendencies

•History of trauma or abuse

•Major physical illnesses

•Previous suicide attempt(s)

•Family history of suicide

•Job or financial loss

•Loss of relationship(s)

•Easy access to lethal means

•Local clusters of suicide

•Lack of social support and sense of isolation

•Stigma associated with asking for help

•Lack of healthcare, especially mental health and substance abuse treatment

•Cultural and religious beliefs, such as the belief that suicide is a noble resolution of a personal dilemma

•Exposure to others who have died by suicide (in real life or via the media and Internet)

Know the Warning Signs

Some warning signs may help you determine if a loved one is at risk for suicide, especially if the behavior is new, has increased, or seems related to a painful event, loss, or change. If you or someone you know exhibits any of these, seek help by calling the Lifeline.

  • Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves
  • Looking for a way to kill themselves, like searching online or buying a gun
  • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
  • Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
  • Talking about being a burden to others
  • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
  • Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly
  • Sleeping too little or too much
  • Withdrawing or isolating themselves
  • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
  • Extreme mood swings

CNN Reports:

When a high-profile person dies by suicide, the “celebrity-suicide effect” can lead to a rise in copycat deaths. In the four months after Robin William’s took his own life in 2014, there was a 10% increase — almost 2,000 additional suicides — recorded.

There is already a rise in suicide rates in the US, increasing more than 25% since 1999. Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in 2015, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Suicide rates are also rising worldwide, with some one million people dying annually from suicide. The World Health Organization estimates a global suicide rate of one death every 40 seconds, which by 2020 they predict will increase to one every 20 seconds. If you or someone you know might be at risk of suicide, here are ways to help:

Kate Spade Leaves Behind a Long Legacy for Fashion Lovers

Today, the Fashion Industry and pop culture enthusiasts and more are mourning the death of designer Kate Spade who reportedly took her own life today inside her New York City apartment.

As the investigation into the apparent suicide goes on, many today are posting and sharing their memories of their first Kate Spade New York bag, accessory or the like in social media.

Kate and her husband Andy, brother of actor David Spade, founded their handbag and accessories business in 1993 and grew it to international success with Kate being the designer, mastermind and face of the label.

It was iconic and in my youth, a Kate Spade bag was an “it” item to procure and show off. Her death is a reminder of two other fashion icons who commit suicide approximately, 4 and 8 years ago: LWren Scott, in 2014, who was also a longtime partner of Mick Jagger at the time, and Alexander McQueen in 2010. It is also a call for us all to heed to the importance of self-care, tending to our own mental health and checking in with those in our lives who may be dealing with inner turmoil or suffering from depression.

If you or someone you know needs help, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

The last item of hers I purchased was a colorful striped iPhone cover.

When I think of Kate Spade, the following adjectives come to mind, as displayed through these wonderful pieces that represent her aesthetic in her brand, owned by Coach for the past 10 years:

Top Knots and Bikini Bumps These Days for Kate Hudson

Third-time mom-to-be Kate Hudson took to social media recently to give her fans and followers a pregnancy baby bump progression update. “A different kind of beach bod brewing??#HeyGirl ?#Sunday#CitrineOnSolarPlexusWatchOut ?” the actress captioned a bikini photo posted on Instagram last month.

“Auntie @sophielopez giving us a belly kiss pre fitting ? #ShesGettingBig ?” the Fabletics founder captioned another photo about a week ago:

Hudson and boyfriend of two years Danny Fujikawa announced on April 6 via Instagram that they were expecting their first child together. The couple also announced that the baby is a girl, the first for Hudson who has a 14-year old son Ryder Robinson with her ex-husband Chris Robinson and a 6-year old son named Bingham Bellamy  with her ex Muse frontman Matt Bellamy.

Kate Hudson and the Girl Pregnancy Equals More Morning Sickness Theory

Kate Hudson told PEOPLE magazine that she thinks the wives’ tail that being pregnant with a girl makes morning sickness worse for expecting moms than when carrying a boy.

The 39-year-old actress, who is also mom to sons 14-year-old Ryder and 6-year-old Bingham from previous relationships, says she has experienced increased morning sickness this third pregnancy.

“They say girls make you sicker and that, for me, has been the truth,” said the 39-year old actress who is expecting her first girl with  beau Danny Fujikawa.

There may be science behind the theory.

A  New York Times article looked at a study done by epidemiologists at the University of Washington that compared 2,110 pregnant women hospitalized with morning sickness during the beginning of their pregnancies to 9,783 pregnant women who didn’t get severely ill. The women with morning sickness were more likely to deliver a girl, and those who were so sick that they were hospitalized for three days or more were the most likely to be pregnant with a daughter—an 80 percent chance.

Other studies have come to the same conclusion, hypothesizing that hormones produced by female fetuses could be the reason those expectant moms are getting sick

Editor ‘s Note: every woman is different as for me a mom with two boys and a girl. My boy pregnancies gave me extreme morning sickness beyond the first trimester while I had close to none with my daughter.

We Now Know the Name of Kate Middleton and Prince Williams’ Third Child

You best believe it wasn’t going to be some obscure Hollywood name like True, Dream, Saint, North, Stormi, Chicago or Reign, Blue or Sir.

The British Royals newest arrival has a name.

As E! Reports:

You may call His Royal Highness…

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles,” Kensington Palace announced Friday. “The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.”

Just days after welcoming their third child into the world on Monday, Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton revealed their little boy’s special moniker.

As for the baby’s official title, according to royal historian Marlene Koenig who spoke to Town & Country, the little one will be called His Royal Highness Prince Louis of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. However, like his siblings and famous parents, little Louis will go by His Royal Highness Prince Louise of Cambridge.

Either way, that’s quite a moniker to learn how to write on a name tag at school!

The tot joins big brother Prince George, 4, and older sister Princess Charlotte, 2. George’s full name is George Alexander Louis, sharing George with Queen Elizabeth II‘s father, King George VI, and Louis with his father, whose full name is William Arthur Philip Louis.

Meanwhile, Charlotte’s full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. The choice of Charlotte was believed to be a nod to William’s father Prince Charles and is also the middle name of Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton and her grandmother Carole Middleton. Naturally, Elizabeth is a reference to William’s grandmother and England’s monarch as well as mom Kate’s middle name. Diana, of course, is a tribute to Prince William’s late mother.
