International Day of the Girl Aims to End Sad Stats of Girls, Globally

October 11 is the International Day of the Girl, a campaign launched by the United Nations dedicated to highlighting barriers and empowering girls to reach their full potential.

It is a movement meant to bring attention to advocacy projects and initiatives around the world to promote the education, safety and security of young girls globally.

Specifically, the mission is “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.”

On this day, activist groups come together under the same goal to highlight, discuss, and take action to advance rights and opportunities for girls everywhere.

It’s also a national day of action to elevate awareness of  gender justice and youth rights.

In 2015 when leaders signed up to the UN Sustainable Development Goals – the Global Goals – they made a promise – to empower all girls.

Although there has been progress, the Global Goals campaign call for keeping the pressure on world leaders deliver and every girl grows up healthy, safe, empowered and able to fulfill her dreams.

Also to coincide with the day, the Save the Children nonprofit released a study which revealed that  biased views on the value of girls and their roles within the classroom and society begin to show as early as fourth grade. The global humanitarian organization surveyed boys and girls in the United States and the West African nations of Sierra Leone and Côte d’Ivoire and  found that a striking number of young boys – and even many girls – believe fathers rule the household, boys are smarter than girls and girls need less school than boys.

“Girls are worth far more than what the world tells them,” Carolyn Miles, president & CEO of Save the Children of the data which found, among other things, that  17 percent of American fourth graders believing a man would make a better boss than a woman.   “Globally, we know that girls are more likely than boys to miss out on school, experience violence and live in poverty. That is why we need to invest in their education and do everything possible to delay early marriage and motherhood. By providing children equal opportunities and access to learning, every girl can realize what she’s truly worth.”

In 2017, girls around the world are still frequently marginalized in their families, communities and societies because of who they are or where they were born. They face discrimination, lack equal opportunities and earn less money – their lives and futures aren’t given the value they deserve. Save the Children’s analysis revealed that a girl under 15 is married every seven seconds.

Also, to commemorate this annual day, 30-year old Oxford University graduate, director MJ Delaney teamed up with Project Everyone in partnership with UNICEF and the Bill & Melinda Gates, to create a new video to raise awareness of the #FreedomForGirls campaign which has been created to support Inernational Day of the Girl

The video features girls from all walks of life and different nations around the globe dancing and lip-syncing to Beyonce’s song, “Freedom’”. The Group also  calls for action on some of the biggest challenges girls face like access to education, child marriage and the threat of violence”.

Last year, the group asked people to share #WhatIReallyReallyWant for girls and women – this year it wants everyone to raise their voice for freedom.

This Halloween, Don’t Get Sick and Follow These Healthy Eating Tips

Halloween is right around the corner. Pick up those finishing touch decorations, plan parties, finalize costumes and most importantly, brush up on proper food safety practices to prevent foodborne illness this year.
Stop Foodborne Illness , a national, nonprofit, public health organization dedicated to preventing illness and death from foodborne pathogens, wants people to be aware of the dangers that can arise from food during the Halloween season. Educating yourself and your children is the easiest way to reduce the risk this holiday season. Whether you are going trick-or-treating or hosting a Halloween party, make sure you leave the scares to the dressed-up ghouls and goblins.

Trick-or-treating is a fun activity, but it can potentially be a serious health hazard. Before heading out with the kids or sending them off on their own, remind them how important it is to be aware of the treats they are receiving. Check out Stop’s quick tips for practicing easy food safety while trick-or-treating:

  • Avoid homemade goodies from people you don’t know. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends avoiding eating homemade treats made by strangers since there is no way to ensure the person preparing them followed proper food safety procedure. Although everyone loves a good brownie or caramel apple, the best way to stay safe is to stay away.
  • Fight the snacking urge. Make sure everyone’s had a light meal or snack before hitting the neighborhood streets. It is always tempting to enjoy a piece—or two— of the sweet haul while walking to the next house, but Stop urges trick-or-treaters to wait until they return home and can check that all treats are properly wrapped before eating.
  • Wash your hands. Proper handwashing is always important in preventing the spread of dangerous pathogens but is even more important during this holiday. Between trick-or-treating and school Halloween parties, a lot of packaged candy passes from different hands, increasing the chances of contracting foodborne illness. Make sure kids are washing their hands before digging into their Halloween candy.

Hosting a Halloween party for friends and family? Let the ghosts in but say boo to bacteria. Stop Foodborne Illness has a few guidelines for entertaining your guests for a fun and safe night.

  • Beware of spooky cider! Unpasteurized juice or cider can contain harmful bacteria such as Salmonella . To stay safe, always serve pasteurized products at your parties. Any dish or drink with fresh fruit—or veggies—must be thoroughly washed before being served.
  • Prevent the spread of bacteria by keeping all perishable foods chilled until serving time. Bacteria creeps up when foods sit out too long. Don’t leave goodies—like finger sandwiches, cheese platters, fruit, salads, cold pasta dishes, Jell-O treats, store bought deli trays and cream pies or cakes with whipped-cream and cream-cheese frostings—out of the fridge for more than two hours (1 hour in temperatures above 90°F).
  • Plan safe entertainment. Bobbing for apples is a classic Halloween game but having multiple people touching the same apples over and over again can present significant food safety risks. Reduce the number of bacteria that might be present by thoroughly rinsing apples under cool running water and using a produce brush to remove surface dirt. Or, give the traditional game a modern update : Cut out “apples” from red construction paper and write activities for kid—or funny dares for an older crowd—on each one. Place a paper clip on each apple and put them in a large basket. Tie a magnet to a string and let guests take turns “bobbing” with their magnet.

14 Best Twitter Reactions to Kylie Jenner Pregnancy Reports

So TMZ is reporting that Kylie Jenner is pregnant with her and boyfriend Travis Scott‘s child. The two have dated since April and recently the youngest of the Kardashian/Jenner clan posted Snapchat pics of herself in oversized shirts that sort of looks like she is concealing a baby bump.

Not sure if it is true but E! Online, the online version of the entertainment company and channel that airs the Keeping Up With The Kardashian franchise shows (including the latest Life of Kylie) reported the news today so the odds are looking like it may be true. Who knows!?!?!

The jury is still out until confirmed but what we do know is that Twitter has had the BEST reactions to the news! Here are our faves:

The Walking Dead Fans Won’t See Maggie Give Birth Anytime Soon

Season 8 of The Walking Dead will return to fans on Sunday, October 22, at 9:00 p.m. ET. but the hit AMC drama’s showrunner Scott Gimple recently revealed that pregnant charcter Maggie will not be giving birth in any future episode soon.

When asked if anyone should expect to see Maggie giving birth in Season 8, Gimple said this:

We shouldn’t. . . . It’s quite early in, as it was in the book.

“With ‘quite early in,’ Scott Gimple is referring to Maggie’s pregnancy in general, as she’s seriously not all that far along by this point in the narrative, despite having first revealed to Aaron that she was expecting back in the first chunk of Season 6., ” Cinemablend explains. “So, in a sense, if Maggie actually would give birth during Season 8, it would be far scarier than heartwarming, as it would be an extremely premature delivery. I mean, her belly bump is roughly the size of what it would be if the group had a fairly sizable meal.”

The idea of yet another post-apocalypse baby is daunting, right? So far, Judith has been able to survive while being kept safe and busy while the adults battle Walkers, Wolves, and now Nagan!

An infant in the mix would certainly make things even more interesting.

Halloween: Fun Alternative Things for Kids to Do

Halloween is a true oddball when it comes to holidays. It’s shrouded in mystery, and no one can really explain when it first came into being. What parents and children do agree on, is that it’s an awesome opportunity to dress up and ghoulish costumes, and yes, load up on candy. Let’s not forget that being a parent is stressful and sometimes doing things as a family can patch up relationships that have seen better days. It can be a real event at your house this year, with the full shebang occurring right under your roof. But, why should you settle for same old same, when you have so many Halloween ideas that you don’t even know about? Most people think that they have to make the holiday just all about the kids, and somehow or another it has to be relatable for them. Some parents take the easy way out and just let the kids run around, with their friends and go trick or treating. If you choose to be more involved, you can pass on some great traditions which will live on be passed down eventually.

Invite a few ghosts over

Rather than going to a haunted house that’s at a local theme park or perhaps the fairground, why not invite ghouls, goblins, and ghosts into your home instead. You can transform your home into a giant abandoned home that the children can explore. It’s great for the family but even better when the friends of your children are coming over to hang out after or before they go trick or treating. You can buy or even just rent a mist making a machine, that will cover the floors of your home and garden with perfectly harmless fog. It will give off an eerie effect like the castles in many haunting stories. You can also fill up a bucket or perhaps an upside down pumpkin with goop that you can learn how to make from the internet. At the bottom, there can be sweets in wrappers and perhaps clues to a mystery game. The home’s lights can be turned off, and the children may only be given an electric lamp that is handheld, to give them light throughout the home as they explore. It’s a fun game that even the adults can join in with, and make sure no one is too scared and frightened.

Have a tent-out for the kids

If it’s not too cold out, set up a nice little play area for the children alongside a teepee or small tent. They can sleep outside in the back garden for the night. If you only have one child, allow them to bring over a couple of friends. Inform the parents that you’ll be looking after them, as well as swapping house phone numbers and agreeing on a time when they should be back. Give the children torches so that they never truly feel like they’re in the dark, but give them a clear warning to not shine them at neighbors or through the windows of other homes. You can even start a fire but do so safely. Put bricks all around the base of the fire and dampen the grass of the lawn so that fire won’t catch easily. Here they can toast marshmallows, swap ghost stories and sit beneath the stars. It’s a great way to end a night of trick or treating by allowing them to be surrounded by darkness but in the safe company of friends. This really adds to the atmosphere and the spooky nighttime.

A fiendish day out

Trick or treating is really only fun because friends get to go out together and people give you candy. Well, what’s even better is the fact that Halloween doesn’t have to be restricted to just that. This year, why not take your kids to a place of fun activities, great food and some place where you can introduce them to traditional Halloween customs like pumpkin carving. This October take your children to http://mrbonespumpkinpatch.com/ where they can feed animals, go on a pony ride, get their faces painted like skeletons, chase each other in a maze made of hay, and bounce around in giant spider bouncy castle. The food is great too, with ice cream vendors coming around as well as fish tacos and other goodies like grilled cheese. This place also has great music entertainment with fantastic string bands, country music as well as a chance for kids to play cool rhythmic beats on drums. It’s a great day out for the kids and just as good if not better than the usual door to door trick or treating.

Baking time

Rather than just giving your kids treats to celebrate Halloween, why not get them in the kitchen, and get them to help you bake? You can make scary clawed cupcakes, with yummy vanilla icing with gash marks, which are filled with raspberry jam to look like blood. Or perhaps you’d like to make rice krispie Frankenstein bites. Simply get a box of rice pop cereal, and melt down a little bit of marshmallow which will work as the gluing agent. Then take your shape cutter, and make a rectangle or square, use a bit of green food coloring to dunk the sides in. Allow them to cool off, and then melt a bit of chocolate, which you’ll use as the hair. Cut out little eyes from marshmallows that are left over, and glue them on with the agent, and dab a little bit of chocolate to make the pupils. These recipes and many others like them are easy to make, great fun for the kids because they get to be involved and far cheaper than store-bought candy.

You don’t have to stick to the normality of Halloween treats and activities. Trick or treating is great for a year or two, but eventually, your children might get bored and lose interest in going door to door. Mix it up a bit with these alternative, fun things to do this Halloween. Take them out for a fun day of face painting and pony riding, and finish it off with pumpkin carving. Or simply invite the goblins and ghosts into your own home by creating a haunted house adventure. Think outside the box and inject surprise and fun into your children’s lives.

15 Celebrities Caught in Cheating While Pregnant Scandals

This weekend, comedian Kevin Hart came clean about having some indiscretions with a woman who is not his wife and recently tried to extort money from him in exchange for keeping a sexually-explicit video she took of him secret. He chose to fess up and apologize to current expectant wife Eniko Parrish and his children with ex wife Torrei Hart instead in a video posted by TMZ.

Good for him for not succumbing to an illegal extortion attempt. While it is disappointing that he strayed at a critical time in his wife’s life carrying their first child together, hopefully, they can overcome this incident.

Hollywood has a little history of male celebrities stepping out on their spouses while pregnant. And female celebs too. For example, actress Claire Danes reportedly cheated with her Stage Beauty co-star Billy Crudup who left his then 7-months pregnant wife Mary Louise Parker for her before Danes and Crudup too eventually split up.

Some end up in brand new unions.  In 2010, former NFL great and ex TODAY show Sports commentator Tiki Barber cheated on his pregnant wife Ginny Barber with 23-year old intern Traci Lynn Johnson while Ginny was pregnant with the couple’s twins. He is currently married to Johnson and the two of them have children.

Actress Shar Jackson was pregnant with her third child with longtime beau and backup dancer Kevin Federline, when he started an affair with Britney Spears.

Then there are the “duh” incidents common with athletes and rappers.

Lil Wayne had two women, singer Nivea and actress  Lauren London pregnant at the same time. So obviously somebody was getting cheated on at some point.

A-Listers get burned too.

Actress Salma Hayek broke up with her French billionaire fiance François-Henri Pinault 11 months after the couple had their first child. There was speculation he may have started an affair while she was still pregnant.

Finally, Bones Star David Boreanaz cheated on his wife of eight years, Jaime Bergman, while she was pregnant, reportedly — and of all people with Rachel Uchitel, the same NYC events planner who boned a married Tiger Woods!

Keep your chin up, Eniko! From the looks of recent photos she has posted on Internet, she seemed to be having a pretty fun pregnancy up until now.

Cold and Flu Season: Parents’ Guide to Kids’ Illnesses

Cold and Flu season is around the corner, so to you new parents, (and even some of you veteran ones), here is a breakdown of some common childhood illnesses that you should know about…take notes!

There are a handful of childhood illnesses that are more common than others, and you’ll need to be well-versed in how to recognize the early signs to ensure that your charges get the care they need in a timely manner.

  • The common cold – Everyone knows about the common cold, and there are plenty of old wives’ tales about how kids get them. Generally, the common cold is spread by germs that enter the body through the mouth or nose. Keeping little hands clean will help some in warding off this unpleasant experience. Always carry kid friendly hand sanitizer with you when going out in public and see to it that little ones do not gnaw on shopping cart handles or touch public door handles. Many stores now provide disinfectant wipes for the customer’s use, so take advantage of them when they’re available.
  • Chicken pox – Those little itchy dots can make for a miserable time for kids, and it’s one of the most common afflictions of childhood. Usually one child will come down with the pox and then others will fall one by one as it makes the rounds. Unfortunately, it usually gets spread around before the rash shows up. Kids are contagious for two or three days before the appearance of the rash through the crusting over of the blisters.

There are medicines that will help the itching, and oatmeal baths can also help keep irritation in check. Dr. Stephen Dowshen suggests avoiding the sun during the outbreak and for a few days after to prevent burning sensitive skin and increased scarring. Itching is exacerbated by heat and sweating; cold, damp washcloths applied to affected areas should help.

If you have not had chicken pox yourself and you have not had a vaccine, use precautionary measures to protect yourself while caring for an infected child. This illness takes quite a toll on teens and adults and can actually be dangerous for them, possibly leading to complications such as pneumonia, hepatitis and encephalitis. Scarring is permanent for adults who contract the disease.

  • Ear infections – Most kids experience ear infections from time to time. Don’t be surprised if your little charge has two or three of them during the year. Some children have chronic infections, meaning they are plagued with ear pain four or more times a year, or three or more times within a six month period.

Usually ear infections will occur with upper respiratory infections or colds. The estuation tube, which is much smaller in little ones, begins to swell. This tube connects the middle ear to the nose and back of the throat. Blockage here causes fluid to build up in the middle ear behind the eardrum. This build up can lead to infection due to germs multiplying, but doesn’t always happen. When it does, it often results in the child fighting off the infection and fever ensues. Temporary hearing loss can also be present as a result of the pressure on the eardrum caused by the excessive fluid.

Since some ear infections tend to be viral rather than bacterial, many doctors take a wait and see attitude rather than prescribing antibiotics. They will often suggest pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and usually the infection runs its course in a matter of a few days. If it becomes severe, then more aggressive treatment is called for.

  • Fifth disease – For being a common illness, Fifth disease, caused by Parvovirus B19, is not talked about much. It’s a rash that leaves a child looking as if she’s been slapped. It is also commonly called “slapped cheek” rash since it is the most recognized manifestation of the illness. Initial symptoms – fever, runny nose and headache – are fairly mild.  The rash typically shows up several days after the onset of the more non-specific symptoms.

Except for rare instances where the child has a very weak immune system, Fifth disease tends to be mild and usually disappears within a few days. Most kids have full recovery and future immunity to the virus. In cases where the immune system is compromised, serious complications such as chronic anemia can crop up that will require medical treatment.

The historical name, Fifth disease, comes from the rash being number five on a list of common skin rash illnesses affecting children. Measles was first on the list followed by scarlet fever, rubella and Duke’s disease.

  • Croup – This illness is common among the very young. It is often the result of infection caused by human parainfluenza viruses (not to be confused with the flu virus). The upper respiratory tract becomes infected, and fever, runny nose and cough show up as symptoms. In the case of croup, the upper airways become inflamed. This inflammation of the larynx and trachea often results in a barking cough. It can also lead to hoarseness.

Children have a tendency to get worse at night. This is especially true for the child who is upset or crying. Since the swollen tissue of the windpipe can make breathing difficult, you may hear a high pitched noise called stridor during inhalations.

Plenty of rest and fluids, along with acetaminophen or ibuprofen for discomfort and fever, are generally enough to get the child through this uncomfortable illness.

Most of the common illnesses children will contract are fairly benign and will pass within a few days. You need to be aware of what illness they are contending with though, so that you can take necessary precautions to protect your own health. If you have a strong immune system, generally you will have nothing to be concerned about; still, you need to be diligent  around those diseases that affect adults more adversely then children.

Always remember that washing hands, proper etiquette for sneezing and coughing and a healthy lifestyle will help keep most illnesses at bay. When illness does strike, lots of TLC and a nice steaming bowl of chicken soup seem to work wonders in combatting those pesky bugs.

Better Breakfast Tips For Families (INFOGRAPHIC)

A recent survey about breakfast uncovered  surprising trends about the breakfast eating habits of families across the nation. It found that one in every five children go without breakfast at least once per week, with 38 percent of parents saying this is due to lack of time and hectic mornings.

And interestingly enough, that number surges to 50 percent for those who typically eat on-the-go or in the car, demonstrating a direct correlation between eating breakfast on-the-go and poor nutrition in the morning.

The survey also showed that parents are concerned about sugar content in their children’s breakfast foods (36 percent), but when they must choose between a better-for-you breakfast and something their children will actually eat, they’ll chose the less nutritious option.

In light of the survey results, Barbara’s partnered with Frances Largeman Roth, RDN, nutrition expert and mom of three, offered 5 Better Breakfast Tips to help parents give their kids the most nutritious breakfast possible, which you can view below:

  1. Breakfast Time over Screen Time – Mornings are hectic, especially at the beginning of the school year, before everyone has settled into their schedules. Make it clear to your kids that breakfast time needs to come before they turn on the TV or play with their phone
  2. Better Breakfasts – Barbara’s Breakfast Survey revealed that juice and cereal are the most common breakfast foods on school days: 71% of children drink fruit juice and 95% of children eat cereal. Clearly, kids love juice and cereal but you can still help them make better choices. For example, 100% fruit juice rather than “drinks” or “blends” and lower sugar cereals like Barbara’s Puffins, which are also packed with whole grains.
  3. Add Color! – Studies show that kids like food that’s colorful, so take the opportunity to fit in an extra serving of antioxidant and vitamin C-rich fruit–and tempt their taste buds–by offering brightly colored berries, diced apple and melon, or sliced grapes and kiwi fruit on the breakfast table.
  4. Streamline Set Up – Having a sit-down breakfast is much more doable if you do a little prep in advance. Set up the breakfast table the night before: Clear clutter, and set out bowls, spoons, and napkins. Then all you need to do in the morning is serve the food!
  5. Always Have Backup! – There are some days when you just have to grab and go! Being prepared with a healthy back up option is smart. I like to make extra whole grain pancakes on the weekend and freeze them for a rainy day.

This infographic sums it all up well:
