Inside RHOA’s Kandi Burruss’ Baby Shower

inside kandi's baby shower

This weekend, Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss and her husband Producer Todd Tucker celebrated the impending arrival of their first child together, a son, at a baby shower hosted at the Zucot Gallery in the upscale Castleberry Hill in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday, November 14.

It wasn’t hard to come up with a theme that vibed off of the mom-to-be’s name, Kandiland.  Very cute!

Along with balloons shaped like candy, a cup cake cart, multiple candy bars and stations and other yummy delicacies, upstairs there was a gentlemen’s quarter with a safari theme that the guys could chill in, we learned from Rolling Out‘s coverage.

Our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums Phaedra Parks  and Rasheeda attended along with other celeb moms we’ve featured including  Tiny Harris who were among the organizers.

On site, there were gorgeous black and white family maternity portraits taken by Atlanta-based photographer Drexina Nelson.

Actually, it was very cool to see the team incorporate many ATL and other small event planning businesses like JW Exclusive Designs, Johnnie Winston catering, Balloons And Things, Blushing Berries, Cami Cakes and Exquisite Events by Tomeka who all posted photos of the event in social media, in particular, Instagram.

Here are some of the lovely photos we spotted shared by vendors, guests and the guest of honor, Burruss, herself.

Women Suing Birth Control Pill Maker for Package Error Ask for Millions to Raise Their Kids

Birth-Control-Attorneys

More than 100 women who got pregnant while using birth control pills they claim had incorrect packaging are suing the maker to compensate them for unwanted pregnancies.

Among the 113 women from 28 states who became pregnant while using pills made by Qualitest Pharmaceuticals are a couple of 17 year old girls, a woman in the military who gave up her child for adoption because she was scheduled for deployment and would not be able to care for the child, and a few other women who had to drop out of school to care for their babies.

According to a 2011 recall, placebo pills in the packaging were placed in the wrong place to so the women could have taken them at the wrong time, ABC reports. Qualitest did a voluntary recall of 1.4 million packages four years ago.

The packaging error caused blisters to be rotated 180 degrees on the card, “reversing the weekly tablet orientation and making the lot number and expiry date no longer visible,” the company said in its recall announcement.

“As a result of this packaging error, the daily regimen for these oral contraceptives may be incorrect and could leave women without adequate contraception, and at risk for unintended pregnancy,” the company said.

This week’s  lawsuit includes claims for the cost of raising the unwanted babies through adulthood.

The company has confirmed that only one blister pack was sold to a patient and state that courts have dismissed past cases because those plaintiffs were unable to prove they purchased a defective package.

“Our commitment is to patient safety and we take product quality very seriously,”  Qualitest subsidiary Endo Pharmaceuticals said in a statement to ABC. “There is no new or recent product recall. The recall that forms the basis of this suit was entirely voluntary and occurred more than four years ago in September 2011. The voluntary recall occurred based on an extremely small number of pill packs that were manufactured by an external contract manufacturer.”

Almost 9-Months Preggers Coco Austin Addresses Critics of her Very Small Baby Bump

coco austin blog

Mom-to-be Coco Austin took to her blog on E!Online to address her incredibly small baby bump.

Even though the talk show co-host of IceT and Coco on FOX is expecting her first child with her rapper turned actor husband, she barely had much of a belly most pregnancy and it was the subject of much online chatter.

“I almost feel like I kind of got gypped a little because women start seeing something of a baby bump at four to five months,” the Ice Love Coco reality TV alum writes. “I didn’t see anything until eight months. I was kinda feeling gypped in a way because when you’re pregnant, you want a bump.”

As the fitness enthusiasts prepares for the birth of her baby girl named Chanel, she confessed that she wished she had a bigger pregnancy bump.

“I know I’m in great shape, but I want to feel pregnant also,” Austin writes. “Finally, something is out! She’s finally showing herself and I’m loving every moment. I’m actually telling people that no doubt, I could be pregnant for the rest of my life.”

Austin, who is close to term and just reached 34 weeks gestation,  says she feels grateful for having a smooth pregnancy, yet felt compelled to respond to the critics of her bump.

“The thing is I constantly ask my doctor, ‘Am I healthy? Is the baby healthy? What is going on? Have you seen this before?’ she states in her blog post. “My doctor says yes, athletes look like this all the time because they have such strong abs muscles that it takes longer for a bump to pop out,” adding, “my doctors said they just delivered a figure skater’s baby and she was smaller than me and she squeezed that baby out in nearly three tries because her abs were so strong.”

She also said she will stop addressing the public when her doctor assures her that all is well.

“I’m trying to always prove a point to those people who are doubting me,” she writes. “I’m not going to try and prove a point anymore. You’re going to believe what you want. My whole life I’ve faced rumors like ‘You can’t have that butt, it must be implants’ or ‘your waist is so small, you must have had a rib taken out.’ Everything that I do is unbelievable.”

It’s the price of fame, she acknowledges.

“I just happen to be in the limelight and people want to pick on me,” Austin concludes her post. “There are other women going through the same thing as me.”

Very true! Hang in there, mama!

This phenomenal-looking shoot was right after appearing with her entire family in the infamous Ebony magazine “Black Family ISSUES” edition with the controversial photo of a shattered image of The Huxtables from the famous 80s show The Cosby Show on the cover.

“I finally got my copy of the new #EbonyMagazine family issue that includes my family!” Burruss captioned the IG photo collage of the images of her family in the magazine. “Our family discusses the topic of blended families. Thank you @kiernamayo for including us in this issue! Wow I can’t believe my family is included in the issue with the Obama family & the controversial cover of the #Huxtables. #CosbyShow #RHOA #FirstFamily #Presidential #Obama”

How you Can Help the Viral ‘Bun In Oven’ Couple whose Baby Came Early

bun viral couple

Family members of Dana Griffin-Graves and Arkell Graves, the couple whose emotional pregnancy video went viral before their baby was born 16 weeks early, have created an online campaign to raise money for the new mom and dad.

Just two weeks after the couple’s video gained worldwide attention, Dana gave birth to their son when she was just 24 weeks and one day into her pregnancy.

As of Saturday at 6 p.m., the family posted that little Kaleb Arkell Graves, who was born Tuesday at 1:08 p.m.,  remained in critical condition.

“He is tiny in statue but he is a fighter. He is in stable but critical condition,” Dana posted earlier this week. “With only a 5% chance of survival, Kaleb is here. I’m grateful to God, my wonderful husband Arkell and my amazing family.”

Because of the likelihood of a lengthy hospital stay, Dana’s sister, Melanie Griffin-Hamlin, launched a GoFundMe account Friday.

“This Go Fund Me page was created by Dana’s sister with the purpose of helping to offset some of the expenses of the enormous hospital bills and to have a beautiful, well-deserved nursery for Baby Kaleb created for his arrival home in a few months (we are claiming this in faith!),” the GoFundMe page states.

As of Saturday night, the fund had received 51 donations totaling $1,125 and had been shared by more than 4,500 Facebook users.

The couple, who is continuing to ask the community for prayers via their Facebook page, said the words of encouragement give them strength.

Don’t Celebrate Halloween? Here are 4 Alternatives for Your Family

halloween alternatives

My children go to a religious school that doesn’t celebrate Halloween in the traditional sense. We’ll be having alternative ways to enjoy the season, paying homage to all souls that have gone on and heralding historical, liturgical or literary figures by dressing as them instead of ghosts, goblins and ghouls.

There are several families, cultures and groups that also do not partake in the season. Their children may feel left out, but there are other ways to enjoy the Autumn and Harvest time this time of the year.

Here are four ways to celebrate the season in a different way:
  1. Harvest festivals. Churches often offer harvest festivals or celebrations to shift the focus from scary costumes to the joys of fall. These festivals offer carnival games and other activities. Check out the calendar at some of the larger churches in your area. Most of the time these events offer FREE admission, with a recommended donation of a bag of candy or canned food. Noah’s Ark parties are also popular alternatives to a Halloween celebration for religious families.

2. Pumpkin patches. Pumpkin season is here. Many local farms offer their customers a chance to pick pumpkins and participate in fun activities for just the cost of the picked pumpkin. Pumpkin Patches and More.org  is a great resource for finding a local pumpkin patch.

3. Pumpkin carving party. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to throw a pumpkin-carving party. Ask all of your guests to bring a pumpkin, knife and newspaper (to collect spare pumpkin parts). Then just stock up on cheap drinks and snacks. If you’re inclined, you can also buy a bag of cheap tea-lights (you can get 20 tea-lights for $1 at the Dollar Store). Parents and children can work together to crave pumpkins. Be sure to ask guests to set aside seeds so that you can bake them in the oven for a FREE and festive snack. Allrecipes.com offers a great recipe. Once pumpkins are complete, light them up and enjoy the atmosphere while socializing and snack on fresh seeds. Don’t worry about putting together a playlist; most cable TV stations offer a seasonal music channel you can play while everyone is gathered.

4. Volunteer at a local organization. Check with our local homeless shelter or soup kitchen to see if they need any extra help the night of Halloween. Volunteering is a free way to feel great, and doing something good for another person is a great treat – with no trick.

What are you ideas for other festive alternatives to trick-or-treating?

Stanford Students Created a $300 version of a $20K Incubator For Babies in the Developing World

embrace warmer

Each year, more than 1 million babies die on their birth day.

About 20 million premature and low birth weight babies are born worldwide each year with 4 million dying within the first 4 weeks of life, according to the World Health Organization.  This amounts to 450 babies that die each hour and a substantial number of those that die are born in the developing world where there are not enough incubators which cost about $20,000.

Also, many babies are born in rural areas far from hospitals with adequate facilities to care for a premature newborn. A lot of the babies really just need warmth an incubator provides during those first crucial months.  Some babies are born with so little fat and many are unable to control their own body temperatures.

About 6 years ago, four Stanford University students were challenged in a class project to design a portable life-saving incubator that cost less than $300. The group, led by then female student, Jane Chen traveled to India, where the caregiver to patient ration is 1:2,000, to research and perfect their design.

And they did it, creating the Embrace Infant Warmer.

incubator and embrace

“Incubators are vital because the internal organs of premature babies are not fully developed at birth,” Chen wrote in a 2010 piece on CNN.com. Chen is now the co-founder and CEO of Embrace Innovations, a social enterprise that aims to help the 20 million premature and low birth weight babies born every year, through a low cost infant warmer.

She explained the concept and design of Embrace:

Embrace Infant Warmers are non-electric, miniature sleeping bags that use a removable wax insert, which can be heated safely using hot water. The product is easy to sanitize and can be heated over and over again.

The product has been designed specifically for resource-constrained settings. It looks like a small sleeping bag, which incorporates a wax-like phase change material in a plastic pouch that melts at body temperature (98.6 F) to keep the baby at a constant temperature.

The PCM pouch can be heated with either a short burst of electricity or by placing it in boiling water. Once melted, it can maintain a constant temperature for up to eight hours, after which it can be reheated.

In addition to being low cost, the product does not require a constant supply of electricity, complements existing practices such as skin-to-skin care and is extremely safe and intuitive to use.

After creating a prototype, the team launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to produce their first round of Warmers used in India.  Today, Embrace ships the warmers to local clinics and other areas in the developing worldwide.  Costing less than 1% of a traditional incubator, the Embrace Infant Warmer  has helped over 150,000 babies to date.

The goal is to save the lives of 20 Million babies and they are well on their way. Embrace is not stopping there. This May, it launched another campaign and are creating a line of affordable healthcare technologies for women and children around the world.

This invention looks like a tiny sleeping bag and it s helped save 150 000 babies.
Good stuff!
