Harry Styles’ Debut Solo Single is Dedicated to Childbirth; AMom Talking to Her Infant

SNL/Harry Styles/NBC

SNL/Harry Styles/NBC

I heard One Direction boy band alum Harry Styles’ single off his forthcoming solo debut album called “Sign of the Times” and was immediately drawn to it. I felt silly being a Gen Xer really feeling a song by a kid from a group my small kids love.

However, it gives me some Jim Morrison, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, Journey, Beatles, David Bowie vibes and I think that’s the appeal to older generation of music lovers.

I checked out the audio video on YouTube and lo and behold, the top comments were by fans of good music in their 40s and 50s also remarking how much they love the tune.

This kid has a hit. The song debuted #5 on the Billboards Hot 100.  Upon doing further researcher on the lyrics, I learned that the song is about a young mother who is about to deliver her baby but is told that she has just 5 minutes after giving birth to greet her baby. She dies after. How tragic.

harrystylesbbcmusicawardsredcarpetarrivalst3cg19ybshfl

He talked about it in a recent Rolling Stones cover interview promoting this new project. From the interview, he says:

“Most of the stuff that hurts me about what’s going on at the moment is not politics, it’s fundamentals … Equal rights. For everyone, all races, sexes, everything. …  ’Sign of the Times’ came from ‘This isn’t the first time we’ve been in a hard time, and it’s not going to be the last time.’ The song is written from a point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there’s a complication. The mother is told, ‘The child is fine, but you’re not going to make it.’ The mother has five minutes to tell the child, ‘Go forth and conquer.’”

In the song, the dying mom is talking to her new born infant in these lyrics:

Just stop your crying, it’s a sign of the times

Welcome to the final show

Hope you’re wearing your best clothes

You can’t bribe the door on your way to the sky

You look pretty good down here

But you ain’t really good

We never learn, we been here before

Why are we always stuck and running from

The bullets? The bullets

We never learn, we been here before

Why are we always stuck and running from

The bullets? The bullets

We don’t talk enough, we should open up

Before it’s all too much

How heart wrenching and beautiful, no? Wow! I’m looking forward to this kids’ album when it is released on May 12th. He recorded much of the album in his studio complex in Jamaica. Nice!

Watch the video here:

Also, love the SNL performance where he is outfitted in a plaid jacket, looking much like the 1960s British rockers and nothing like a young kid.

Eco-Friday: How to Raise a Green Baby

img_4465

These days, babies seem to come with a lot of stuff. Even before they are born, parents-to-be are bombarded with ads and catalogues, all spurring a buying frenzy on a large range of items that are considered ‘essential’ for baby’s wellbeing.

There’s something to be said, however, for going back to basics. A simpler, more environmentally friendly attitude towards child rearing can make everyone’s lives a little calmer and less filled with ‘stuff’. A wet wipe warmer and a diaper disposal contraption are conveniences, not necessities, eventually filling garbage dumps and landfills for centuries to come.

While some people are ever concerned that being environmentally friendly is more work and less expedient, there are plenty of ways you can raise a green baby without sacrificing comfort or convenience. It’s easy!

Feeding a green baby

Whether breast or bottle feeding, your baby is happiest and healthiest when getting fed. So leaving that debate aside, let’s look at how you can feed green. While breastfeeding has no impact to the environment, for obvious reasons, bottle feeding needs a little more forethought in order to be green.

Go for glass bottles instead of plastic. They’re better for baby, and the environment.

Avoid bottles with disposable inserts. If you have enough bottles, keeping on top of washing them isn’t a big a deal.

Use washable nipple pads, instead of disposable. There are great ones made from organic cotton that work beautifully.

As you switch to solids, you can avoid pre-prepared and packaged foods easily with a little forethought and preparation. Fresh veggies and fruits that have been pureed are perfect for little ones and the bulk store is a great place to stock up on dry cereals and baby pasta!

Sleep setup for a green baby

Babies spend a lot of time in their cribs, napping and sleeping. It’s best if they are doing it safely with organic bedding. Investing in a crib that converts into a toddler bed down the road is much more friendly because it reduces waste.

Consider also furniture that is made from sustainable materials and limited chemicals. Carpets, paints and and finishes are often replete with VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), which are toxic chemical compounds found in synthetic materials.

In fact, the whole nursery where baby spends a large amount of time every day and night will benefit from keeping it allergen free. Limit the number of stuffed animals and toys to a select few and make sure that your rugs and other accessories like cushion covers are made from organic materials and are easy to wash and maintain. Indoor air quality is important, so investing in air purifiers is a great way to keep dust and other allergens down.

img_4467

Clothing a green baby

Organic clothing is another great way to minimize baby’s exposure to harsh chemicals. Non-organic fibers contain petrochemicals, PVC and other compounds that have been linked to health issues. Organic clothes provide a double bonus for the environment too because their manufacturing processes are sustainable. Almost 20% of all water pollution occurs in the manufacturing of non-organic clothes! And, fortunately, organic does not have to mean blah, fun, modern designs, colors and styles are no w available through brands like Finn + Emma.

When it comes to the fabrics that are closest to baby, forget the packaged wet wipes and get a batch of washable organic cloths! They’re all you’ll need, along with a wet bag for when you’re on the road, to keep baby clean. As for diapering, consider this: the average baby will use up to 6500 diapers before they start potty training. It takes up to 500 years for disposables to decompose.

If you do the math, you can see why landfills are overflowing! If you’re not keen on washing them yourself, there are plenty of services that will pick up the soiled ones and leave you with a fresh pile of clean ones. Look for a local service that doesn’t employ harsh chemicals in the cleaning process, minimizing the eco-footprint in more ways than one!

Other considerations for a green baby

From toys to laundry detergent, you can always make a choice that is more environmentally friendly and those ones, not coincidentally, are usually better for baby’s health and wellbeing.

Rather than a chemical and scent infused soap, opt for a gentle and natural detergent that still gets the job done without risking skin allergies or other reactions. Always remember too that baby’s first instinct is to put things in their mouth. Toys made from organic cotton yarn, or untreated woods preserved with natural waxes, are safer options.

Look for the G.O.T.S. certification on the textile based products you select, which show that the fiber used is certified at least 95% organic, inks and dyes meet specified toxicity and biodegradability levels and certain metals and chemical compounds are not used in the manufacturing process, such as heavy metals and nickel.

Whatever choices you make for baby, and for you, an environmentally friendly one is always available and more accessible than you might think!

Anna Schwengle is the founder of Finn + Emma, a land where sustainability, fair trade, and organically grown cottons live. But Finn + Emma collections aren’t just sustainable, they are also contemporary, whimsical, and sophisticated. Perfect for the trendy baby in your house.

There are no boring designs and toxic chemicals here. Just an abundance of fresh prints and heirloom quality construction. Only the finest 100% organic cotton, eco-friendly dyes, and all natural, untreated Indian wood will do for your little munchkin. https://www.finnandemma.com

Kerry Washington is Not Down with the ‘Pump and Dump’ Practice

kerry-washington

Scandal star Kerry Washington isn’t into the whole “pump and dump” thing, the practice of pumping out contaminated breast milk after a breastfeeing mom indulges in alcoholic, spicy, gassy or other food and drink that could filter to baby.

Instead, she has just been staying away from it all.

“I haven’t been drinking a lot of wine because I’ve been with child and nursing,” Washington told attendees at the Scandal cast’s panel during the Disney-ABC portion of the 2017 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour at Langham Hotel on January 10 in Pasadena, California. “I’m not really into the pump and dump.”

During the Golden Globe Awards this past Sunday, the Confirmation star shared that her 2-year old daughter Isabelle Amarachi has been a very good big sister to her brand new 3-month old baby brother Caleb Kelechi.

“She’s enjoying it,” the Emmy and Golden Globe nominee told ExtraTV.

“It’s good. I’m an only child, but my husband [former NFL cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha] has many siblings, so he can walk her through it,” she added.

This Reality TV show alum turned Lifestyle Mogul is the Latest Expecting Laguna Beach Alum

laruen-conrad

Lauren Conrad is the latest of alums from the MTV reality TV shows Laguna Beach and The Hills to have announce a pregnancy.

The author, blogger and lifestyle maven shared the news on Instagram that she and her husband William Tell are expecting their first child together.

“Happy New Year! I have a feeling 2017 is going to be the best year yet…” she captioned a photo of her sonogram and of course, it was quite dreamy and perfect and quite on brand with her Instagram page with 5.5M followers.

Happy New Year! I have a feeling 2017 is going to be the best year yet…

A photo posted by Lauren Conrad (@laurenconrad) on

Audrina Patridge welcomed her first child, daughter, Kirra Max, early in 2016 and Kristin Cavallari is well ahead of all of them, having given birth to her third child, daughter Saylor James in 2015.  She gave birth to her first child, son Camden, in August 2012 and second, Jaxon in May 2014;

Laguna Beach alum Alex Murrel gave birth to a son last July with her spouse and a month later another alum of that show about “the Real Orange County”,  named after the hit show The OC ‘s fictionalized portrayal of the posh coastal region, gave birth. Casey Reindhardt and her husband welcomed their first child, a daughter they named Kensington. Christina Schuller (nee Sinclair) welcomed her first child, son Christian Sutton, in 2014. This past September 2016,  Morgan Smith (nee Olson) welcomed her second child with her husband,  daughter, after giving birth to son Theo in 2014.

One interesting thing I noted of all these births is that they all (minus Cavallari’s first) were with their husbands, not fiances or boyfriends. Says something about how they stick to tradition.

I’ve always admired Conrad for being one of the few people to successfully parlay a reality TV show beginning into a mini empire.

She  has written a successful series of young-adult novels and oversees her successful fashion line she co-founded Paper Crown and her popular Kohl’s line, LC by Lauren Conrad.

Our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums who have done the same include Kim Kardashian West, the ultimate media and lifestyle mogul. Tamar Braxton Herbert and Evelyn Lozada have successfully leveraged their fame from reality TV to lucrative subsequent gigs, careers and other ventures. They’re not limited to marketing their online social media presence via sponsored posts or by selling digital products either, a lot of reality TV alums are doing well selling products and partnering with brick and mortar realtors! Good stuff!

Our Celebrity ‘Bumpwatch’ Mom of The Year Is…

celeb-mom-of-year

In year’s past, we’ve recognized the celebrities that we followed most and we’ve even awarded superlatives. This year, while reviewing a year’s worth of posts, we are prepared to award the Bellyitch Bumpwatch Celebrity Mom-to-Be of the Year.

The honor goes to…. The Over 40 Celebrity!

Several stars including Savannah Guthrie, 45, Tyra Banks (via surrogate) 43, Lisa Ling, 43, Tameka “Tiny” Cottles 40, Eva Mendes, 42, Keri Russell, 40, Alanis Morissette, 42 and Janet Jackson, 50 welcomed or announced a pregnancy this year.

Why do they deserve special recognition over the 20 and 30-something millennial celebrities who also gave birth in 2016, you ask?

As women age, it becomes even more challenging to conceive without medical intervention and to carry a baby to term. Therefore, when it happens, there is even more reason to celebrate given the odds and hurdles that must be overcome to achieve success.

Gestational carrier, surrogacy, adoption and other medical methods like IVF and donor egg have made it possible for some. A few have been successful without medical assistance. Either way, our hats off to those who balanced career and family and still had the time, ability and inclination to want to welcome a new addition in 2016.

You guys are the real MVP!

over 40

And more veteran moms over 40 have been keeping up and showing out the younger ones by showing off super fit bods. Fergie, Gwen Stefani, Kelly RipaMel B. and Halle Berry shared photos of themselves in social media with super toned and ripped physiques.

Granted, we know celebrity women have access to personal chefs, trainers and a team of assistants to help them out with their children so they can hit the gym regularly and often. Also, they work in an industry where it is essential for them to have their bodies snatched back into fit and trim shape, but it still takes harder work and more dedication to stay fit when your metabolism slows and it gets harder to shed pounds and keep it off.

I Share18 of My Fave Unique Infant Photography Angles

save-picmonkey-s-photo-editor-free-online-image-editing

I think we all can agree that families have run out of creative poses for their babies for birth announcement cards, invitations, at home growth progression photo shoots and for holiday cards. You got the propped up on a pillow, the slouched over a pillow, the barely sitting up straight on the couch. It’s time to get creative and find new ideas.

If you are thinking about photographing or having a professional photographer snap your baby for the Holidays or for a New Year’s card, I’ve curated some unique ideas, vantage points, shots and angles for you to consider. Ever since I co-founded a stock photography co-op that shares free images of multicultural people, I think my visual eye for awesome photography has sharpened!

These are more editorial and artistic in my opinion. I pulled them all down from Pixabay.

baby-1266116_960_720

This baby napping vantage point works to show off your baby’s soft and/or curly hair. The blurred effect of the background with the light source at the right makes this dreamy and serene.

first-birthday-1716748_960_720

This photograph would take time, but instead of a traditional digital collage, print out actual photos from  your camera and arrange them on a orchid or other branched tree, then attach the photos and send people a photo of that tree. It brings the viewer into the room.

newborn-1613591_960_720

This photo isn’t necessarily unique as I’ve seen the above-ground photo looking down on baby in a lamb’s wool blanket while nestled in a moses basket before, but I like this one for the monochromatic effect of the blanket, carpet and letters all having the same color.

baby-1681189_960_720

This superclose up of a baby all snuggled up under mom’s chin will warm the heart and make an excellent print and display photo.

black-white-1444737_960_720

Here is another example of positioning the object to one side, but it is combined with the super-close up and napping examples. Photography elements stacking, I call it.

baby-1765357_960_720

This pose for baby is not uncommon, but I like the coordinated pillows, hat and elbow rest in this one. Also, the blurred background too makes this a dreamy photo.

baby-1512959_960_720

I think you’d need some Photoshop skills to pull this one off, but nothing you cannot get someone on the $5 digital contracting site Fiverr.com

sleeping-1717583_960_720

Create a hammock out of a crochet blanket, outfit your baby in a pair of infant denims and place him in the hammock when he falls asleep. Be careful not to wake him during the shoot.

baby-1317604_960_720

Ready for my close up, Mr. Deville. Show off your baby’s soft buttery smooth skin, bright eyes and perfect smile with an ultra close up shot like this one.

boy-1261760_960_720

Having the object, your baby, on one side of the photograph creates an editorial, Gap Ad quality to this photo. This also has ample natural light coming from the back.

baby-1262816_960_720

Baby in a suitcase. What more can I say?

girl-1825353_960_720

This would have to be done with a baby closer to toddler age and you’d need a rustic country bench and teddy bear but the pop of color in the little girl’s dress juxtaposed with the neutrals in this photo make it great to me!

people-1839564_960_720

If you have a happy smiley baby like this, you’re going to wrap her up in a chenille blanket and take tons of snaps until you get one like this one or close.

baby-1750601_960_720

Who wouldn’t want a basket full of baby in a long candy cane striped sleeping cap? With the Christmas decorations in the background, this photo is a conversation piece for sure.

dog-1718242_960_720

Want to bring your baby-friendly pet into the picture, then this close up of Mr. Bones with the new baby is adorable. I would add some blurring effect to baby’s bum to contrast with the sharp image of the dog.

brothers-457237_960_720

This sibling photo includes the caution and nearby security hand of mom too. Can you spot it? This photo is so cute and aerial shots are always stand outs.

brothers-457234_960_720

Another super cute sibling photo. The rustic bench makes this a standout and baby brothers’s feet facing the camera too. This is super adorbs and will be widely shared!

Trend: More Parents are Opting for Wood Floors in Nurseries

sponsored post

wood-floors

There is a current trend in baby nurseries: wooden floors. Traditionally, it may have been thought that carpeted nurseries are best with the thinking being that carpeted rooms are cozier and warmer. Also, carpet is a natural shock absorber for when baby starts to clumsily toddle about and have slips and falls.

But the fact is that carpet is also great for trapping allergens which are not necessarily great for a newborn’s lungs.

Wall-to-wall carpeting is difficult to clean and can quickly become a haven for dust mites, mold and mildew–less than ideal for those suffering from allergies or asthma. What’s more, new carpets, especially those made of synthetic fibers like nylon or polyester, often contain VOCs and other toxic chemicals that could make your little one sick.

img_0951

hardwood floors

More families are going for wooden floors, in particular hardwood floors. They have a classic and clean look and are ageless. Furthermore, many wood floors are durable and can stand the test of time. To handle the time when baby starts crawling about, a rug, which can be removed and cleaned regularly, will come in handy.

img_0952

bamboo

An eco-friendly option is bamboo floors. That material is less expensive to hardwood floors. Per about.com, Bamboo is the ideal renewable resource, taking only 5-7 years to reach maturity.  The site notes that bamboo is naturally pest resistant, requires no dangerous pesticides and ensures a completely organic product. Because bamboo fibers can be spun into the softest of cloth, as a flooring material, it is harder, more scratch resistant and less prone to warping than hardwood . Score one for bamboo!

cork

Cork is one of the most eco-friendly materials. It is naturally anti-allergenic and anti-microbial. It is warmer and softer than wood flooring, cork provides a comfortable, safe play surface for your little one, cushioning their falls and eventually their footsteps—a feature you’ll appreciate more and more as your little one grows.

blochaus

Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree. The bark, which is harvested without harming the tree, takes only 3 to 4 years to grow back, making the practice highly sustainable. Organic cork does not emit harmful VOCs and is even energy-efficient, providing excellent home insulation.

20 Last Minute Things to Do Before Baby Comes

Are you in your last month of pregnancy and flustered about what you need to do and worry if you have the time? No fret, cousin JJ is here to give you a checklist of crap you need to haul ass and get done.
A list should ease the stress:
What to Pack in the Baby Bag:
1. A warm and comfortable blanket but one you don’t mind getting ruined with all the juices, balms and secretions that accompany labor. It won’t be the same after. errrr.
2.  Mint or lollipops – You may be restricted from eating. The sugar in the lollipop can help curb hunger pangs and keep you from stink breath. Stink breath is no bueno.
3. Lip balm – You may get dehydrated. Keep your lips moisturized. I like ESOS!
4. Moisturizer – Get a very thick tube of moisturizer. I recommend Aquaphor because you don’t need a lot to do the trick.
5. Smart phone camera or digital camera – No explanation necessary
6. A couple pair of granny undies – But no more because you will get the mesh disposable undies plenty at the hospital. You can even take home extras the nurses bring in your room. They’re the best!
7. Baby going home outfit – This is the outfit you dress baby in when the hospital photography company comes by.
8. Gifts for the nurses – Some go above and beyond to make your short stay pleasant. Purchase a box of candy, or a mini spa kit or a journal or cards. I love Steep Seep’s Grapefruit Bergamot gift set which costs under $20!
9. Music – have a playlist of soothing music on a CD or on your phone’s portable speaker that you can plug in and help you calm down and get through a long labor.
10. Breast pad – You may leak so breast-pads and some Lansinoh Nipple Cream may come in handy for cracked or sore nipples from nursing.
LAST MINUTE NESTING
11. Get the carpets cleaned and get rid of any cat or dog hair and other allergens.
12. Create a music playlist for labor and delivery.
13. Buy all the creams, lotions, medicines, and miscellaneous  items you need for yourself and baby.
14. Buy clear plastic containers to organize baby clothing, accessories, toys and a label maker
15. Organize baby’s clothes and label the bins: newborn, 0 to 3 months, 3 to 6months, 6 to 12 months.
16. Create a “call list” on your smart phone so your hubby, spouse or partner knows who to contact after you give birth.

LAST MINUTE GROOMING
You have to make sure you are presentable for labor and delivery, photos after baby arrives and just for feeling good about yourself and the end of the 40 week journey. Don’t know who said letting yourself go was okay during pregnancy, but they lied. If you feel fresh, clean, primmed and prepped, you will feel energetic and ready for pushing out that baby.
17. Get your nether regions waxed. You really don’t want doctors and nurses seeing your business looking like the Brazilian rain forest. Opt for a Brazilian wax instead. If it’s out of the budget, consider going with Nair Bikini removal gel which will not require you to use a razor and nick yourself, but be careful.
18. Wax your eyebrows. You’ll feel better and look great in the post birth pics. But if you’re going for the Anastasia the Russian Gladiator look, then no.
19. Get a Mani and Pedi – A mani because your hands will be in pics and you don’t want to cut baby with your hang nail. Not good.  A pedi because your toes may be in the air and/or in stirrups during the pushing stage and you don’t want to be embarrassed by crusty and ashy hammer toes in people’s faces.
20. Get a hair appointment and get your hair in braids and/or cornrows. You need a low maintenance style bc you will not have time to do your hair after baby arrives and braided styles look great in pics.
