Jessica Alba Hosted East Hampton Launch and Charity Event

Third-time mom-to-be Jessica Alba hosted an event last Saturday, August 5 with her company, The Honest Company as part of a collaboration and new partnership with her stylist team at the Great and the diaper and newborn essentials collection for impoverished women charity  Baby2Baby.

At the East Hampton event, stylists and designers Emily Current and Merritt Elliott celebrated the launch of their upcoming limited-edition diaper collection for The Honest Company under a fun and quirky  decorated Sperry tent.

Our other Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums Molly Sims and Rachel Zoe were there as well.

“Em, Mer, and I have been working together for a while,”  Alba explained to Vogue magazine. “They have been my stylists for a few years now. They [also] do a collection for Pottery Barn, they started a brand called Current Elliott, and then a second brand they started is called The Great. We did a lot of sharing about being women entrepreneurs and having young families. We all have kiddos, and we talked about how do you try and do it all. Often, we feel like we’re compromising something, and we can’t do it all. We talked about how powerful would it be to collaborate and do something really cool and give back. [Our friend] Kelly Sawyer runs Baby2Baby, which is now a national diaper bank program that gives back the basic essentials to families in need, things that we really take for granted—everything from diapers and wipes to lotions to backpacks and shoes. Things that we probably don’t think twice about, but there are millions of families in this country that literally have to choose between food or diapers or they reuse dirty diapers throughout the day.”

Fun times!

Also, her two daughters Haven Garner and Honor Marie were in attendance  at the event which raised money for the no profit on which Zoe, Sims and Alba are board members.

What to Consider Before You Let Your Child Ride the School Bus

The first day of school is a momentous occasion for both parents and their children, but so is the first time that your child rides the school bus alone. For some parents, necessity forces them to put their kids on the bus, as their own professional schedules won’t allow for drop-offs and pick-ups. In other cases, belief that riding the bus builds character or exposes kids to manageable difficulty to give them strength is the motivating factor behind using the school bus as primary transportation. Whatever your reasons, there are a few things you should know before your little one climbs those steps for the first time.

Basic School Bus Safety

In order to teach your child the basic rules of school bus safety, you’ll need to know them yourself. Your child should never run to or from the bus, even if he’s late. He should always stand back from the curb and wait for the bus driver’s signal before crossing the street, and should be at least ten feet in front of the bus for peak driver visibility. While he’s on the bus, your child should never shout, get out of his seat or roughhouse with other kids. If you’re not there to put him on the bus and escort him back at the end of the day, your child will need to know these things in order to handle himself safely.

Expected Times of Arrival

Even if you’re not going to be there to greet the bus at the end of the day or put your little one on it, you should still know the expected time of arrival each way. Arranging a system of notification, especially at the end of the day, will let you know that your older child has reached his stop safely. If you don’t know what time the bus arrives at the stop, you won’t know what time to expect that message.

Adults on the Bus

Some school districts or individual buses have an adult aide, in addition to the bus driver, who works as a monitor, while others rely solely on the attention of the driver. If your child’s bus will not have a monitor, you’ll need to understand that he may be exposed to bullying or other behavior that goes unpunished, as the driver’s attention is focused on the road, rather than the conduct of her young riders.

Rules of Conduct

While there are some basic rules of common sense conduct that hold true on every bus, there may be more specific ones on a particular bus or within your school district that you’re not aware of. You can’t pass those rules along and explain them to your child if you don’t know what they are, so make a point of procuring a copy of the conduct rules from your child’s teacher or school administrators before his first solo ride.

How Behavioral Problems are Handled

Kids on the school bus may not be monitored as heavily as they are in class, which can lead to behavioral problems you’d never consider under other circumstances. Whether your child is the victim or the perpetrator of these infractions, they’re so likely to happen that you’ll need to have a basic grasp of how your school district and bus driver will handle potential behavioral problems.

Age Span of Student Riders

In some districts, it’s feasible to keep younger children separated from the older, more rambunctious bus riders. Smaller areas may not have enough students to warrant more than one bus on a single route, however, and may lump kids of all ages together. This can make for some particularly scary moments for very young children, who can be the target of older bullies. Find out what the average age span is of the riders on your child’s bus, so that you can be prepared for any problems or can make alternate arrangements if you feel uncomfortable with the idea of him being surrounded by junior high students.

Your Child’s Ability to Handle Riding the Bus Alone

Some kids are more mature than others of their age, while some fall a bit behind on the scale of emotional maturity. Before you put your child on the school bus to essentially fend for himself, you need to know where he falls on that scale and how capable he is of handling the potential stressors of riding a school bus. In the end, you’re the only person who will know exactly how prepared your child is, and how well he’s likely to deal with the situation.

Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s TV Show ‘Underground’ Incorporated Her Pregnancy Into the Script

Who knew that when Jurnee Smollett-Bell was filming the second season of her hit WGN TV show about 1850s era slavery Underground that she was heavily pregnant with her first child?

We didn’t and are late to the game! That was one of the revelations shared this Spring with Elle magazine in an interview about her and son’s participation in a GAP commercial for the Every Mother Counts campaign to make pregnancy and childbearing safe for women around the world.

“Yeah, we started shooting for seven months pregnant,” reveals Smollett-Bell, who has had cast appearances in the last season of Parenthood.  “I had a midwife on set, and on the show, I’m pregnant the entire season. They had to write it into the script because it was just so visible. We wrapped our season literally two weeks before I went into labor.”

She added that it was great that being a pregnant actress didn’t stop her from work.

“And for me, it’s such an otherworldly experience to be pregnant and at the same time, to live out my dreams as an actress,” the Eve’s Bayou actor and True Blood alum said. “It felt really empowering as a woman. There’s a misconception we have to choose career or motherhood. Look, you need a lot of help, of course, but I was so glad I didn’t have to choose. I could embrace all that I love at the same time growing this baby inside of me that I love more than anything. I think that sets a powerful example.

The show has since been canceled though there is a campaign to get the show back for a third season though it lost its host, and Oprah Winfrey has said her OWN channel cannot afford to pick it up! We hope some channel does soon! It’s great TV that deserves to continue!

DC Hospital Ordered to Stop Delivering Babies and Caring for Newborns

This District of Columbia has revoked the rights of the only  hospital that serves some of the city’s poorest residents to stop delivering babies and offering newborn care.

This week, on August 7, the D.C. Department of Health ordered the United Medical Center to stop the services based on  deficiencies in screening, clinical assessment and delivery protocols. The hospital has up to 90 days to meet regulations.

The hospital is located east of the Anacostia River, a part of the city that historically is woefully known for having inadequate services.

“I am incredibly concerned that residents of the East End of the District no longer have the option to have their babies delivered at an East End hospital,”

D.C. Councilmember Vince Gray, who represents Ward 7, said adding that he plans to hold a D.C. Council hearing Sept. 22 on “the state of obstetric services” at United Medical Center, saying the suspension “raises questions of health equity and the availability of inpatient birthing options for the approximately 140,000 residents living in Wards 7 and 8.”

After the announcement, one mother told local news channel Fox 5 that the nurses were rude to her, that she received medication that made her feel high and was told to go to another hospital when she asked for pain medicine to relieve an achy tooth.

The hospital has had a history of financial problems and has received tax-payer funded bail outs before; and was fined by Medicare for overbilling and leaving patients with skin infections and bed sores.

The facility is directing expectant mothers to other area hospitals including Providence Hospital, Medstar Washington Hospital Center and George Washington University Hospital.

This Girl Scout Troop Takes Girls to See Their Moms In Prison

An Austin, Texas Girl Scout troop has been running a program since 2000 which enables troop members who have moms in prison to visit their relative.

The “Girl Scouts Beyond Bars” travels almost two hours to the Gatesville Correctional Facility to let moms and their girls catch up,  cuddle, eat lunch and play games. They’re able to feel “normal” for an afternoon in a space that resembles a classroom more than it does a penitentiary, organizers say.

What Serena Williams Said in her Stellar Mag Feature That’s Causing a Stir

Serena Williams covers Australian magazine Stellar in a gorgeous satin Michael Lo Sorto pink jacket and in her fave undergarments, Australian made-Berlei.

Inside the mag, the world-famous Tennis champ, expressed her excitement about becoming a mother for the first time by proclaiming, ” “I have so much respect for so many women [for giving birth],” says Williams. “I am about to be a real woman now, you know? It’s going to be something incredibly impressive to go through.”

Ahe added, “I am about to be a real woman now, you know? It’s going to be something incredibly impressive to go through”.

She got dragged a bit in social media for that last comment from women without children that took offense and said she diminished their authenticity as a real woman because they had no kids.

Williams and her fiance Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian are about to welcome their first child in late Summer.

4 Times Celeb Moms Were Mommy-Shamed Recently

It seems like social media is a ripe place for people to judge others’ looks and personal decisions and make them feel bad about themselves for it all.

Celebrity moms are not immune to it either.

Over the past few weeks, several celeb moms have been “mommy shamed” for posting images of themselves online or in social media that got a lot of critical attention.

First up, recently, P!nk was called out for a photo of herself cooking a meal on the stove top while babywearing and her daughter nearby kneeling on the counter right over the stove.

Last week, Ciara caught a lot of heat from commenters on her Instagram when she posted a photo of herself wearing her infant daughter while going down a water ride

This week, it has been Megan Fox’s turn. Several people online fussed at her for posting a series of recent family photos including one of her son in a Queen Elsa Dress.

Finally, Beyonce was called out for drinking wine while out on a date night with her husband by people who criticized the breastfeeding mom for passing on the alcohol to the twins.

We guess with the access celebs give their fans to social media and with letting them into their personal lives comes unwelcome and unsolicited opinions too.

Par for course, huh?

Study: Pregnancy Protein May Be Cure For Eczema

Atopic dermatitis, the most common form of eczema, could be treated with a protein known to protect the fetus against attack from the mother’s immune system during pregnancy, a new study suggests.

Researchers from Japan found that the protein, called human leukocyte antigen-G1 (HLA-G1), significantly improved skin lesions in mice with atopic dermatitis.

What is more, HLA-G1 was found to reduce immune system activity among rodents in response to dust mites, a common allergen for atopic dermatitis.

Study co-author Prof. Katsumi Maenaka, of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Hokkaido University in Japan, and colleagues recently reported their findings in the journal International Immunopharmacology.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic form of eczema, which is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by rashes – particularly on the face, hands, feet, and behind the elbows and knees – and dry, itchy skin.

The symptoms of atopic dermatitis can be triggered by exposure to a number of irritants and allergens, including dust mites, pet dander, mold, pollen, cigarette smoke, and certain foods.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, atopic dermatitis is estimated to affect at least 28 million people in the United States. The condition is most common among infants and children; around 90 percent of people with atopic dermatitis develop it before the age of 5 years.
