Earth Day: 6 Tips for Having a Greener Home Life

The

It’s Earth Day today.

Meanwhile, America has a food crisis on its hands.

While there is plenty of food at stores and in the refrigerators and pantries of most homes, the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) says that 1 in 8 Americans cannot get enough to eat. And sadly, the NRDC reports that 40 percent of food in America is never eaten and goes to waste.

The average US household can waste anywhere between $1,365 to $2,275 worth of food every year. This epidemic of food waste is not prevalent in the US alone. Globally, 33% of food is thrown away on a yearly basis, totaling 1.3 billion tons of wasted food.

When an apple rots or leftovers are forgotten about and tossed out weeks later, these edibles are not the only resource lost. The water that was used to grow and produce the food, the energy used to transport it to market and the dollars spent marketing and retailing the products also end up wasted. The good news is that anyone can make a few simple lifestyle changes to help reduce global food waste.

1. Stop Buying in Bulk – Instead of stocking up on perishable foods in amounts that could feed a family for two weeks, just shop for what you need for the meals you have planned for the week. Otherwise you are likely to forget what you bought in the back of the fridge.

2. Plan Meals in Advance – Create a meal plan for the week for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Only purchase the food items you need for those particular meals. If you have a sudden craving during the week you can make a separate trip. If going to the store again sounds like too much work then you did not really need that additional food item in the first place!

3. Invest in Smart Appliances – Technology is playing a huge role now in helping reduce food waste in the home. Some new refrigerators let you look inside them to check what supplies you are out of when you are not at home. If a new fridge is a bit out of you price range, there are solutions to make your existing refrigerators ‘smarter’. The Smarter FridgeCam is a retrofit device that can keep track of your food contents wherever you are via your smartphone. FridgeCam will also alert you to upcoming expiration dates and recommend recipes so you can use up what you have. These types of devices can also help you from over-purchasing certain items that you already bought.

4. Put Your Freezer to Use – Spot check your refrigerator every few days for produce or leftovers that are getting close to spoiling. Before they reach the point of no return, if you will not eat them in the next day, put them in the freezer.

  1. Only Grocery Shop After a Meal and Have a List – Two sure ways to end up wasting food are to shop hungry and shop without a plan. Impulse purchases end up not creating full meals leading you to make additional trips to the store.
  2.  Make and Prepare Meals at Home – Many food items can easily be grown at home on a kitchen counter or a backyard garden. If a recipe calls for fresh herbs you can avoid having to toss out the extra by having your own plants. And you will be less likely to let food go to waste when you have invested your own time and effort into growing it.

Harry Styles’ Debut Solo Single is Dedicated to Childbirth; AMom Talking to Her Infant

SNL/Harry Styles/NBC

SNL/Harry Styles/NBC

I heard One Direction boy band alum Harry Styles’ single off his forthcoming solo debut album called “Sign of the Times” and was immediately drawn to it. I felt silly being a Gen Xer really feeling a song by a kid from a group my small kids love.

However, it gives me some Jim Morrison, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, Journey, Beatles, David Bowie vibes and I think that’s the appeal to older generation of music lovers.

I checked out the audio video on YouTube and lo and behold, the top comments were by fans of good music in their 40s and 50s also remarking how much they love the tune.

This kid has a hit. The song debuted #5 on the Billboards Hot 100.  Upon doing further researcher on the lyrics, I learned that the song is about a young mother who is about to deliver her baby but is told that she has just 5 minutes after giving birth to greet her baby. She dies after. How tragic.

harrystylesbbcmusicawardsredcarpetarrivalst3cg19ybshfl

He talked about it in a recent Rolling Stones cover interview promoting this new project. From the interview, he says:

“Most of the stuff that hurts me about what’s going on at the moment is not politics, it’s fundamentals … Equal rights. For everyone, all races, sexes, everything. …  ’Sign of the Times’ came from ‘This isn’t the first time we’ve been in a hard time, and it’s not going to be the last time.’ The song is written from a point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there’s a complication. The mother is told, ‘The child is fine, but you’re not going to make it.’ The mother has five minutes to tell the child, ‘Go forth and conquer.’”

In the song, the dying mom is talking to her new born infant in these lyrics:

Just stop your crying, it’s a sign of the times

Welcome to the final show

Hope you’re wearing your best clothes

You can’t bribe the door on your way to the sky

You look pretty good down here

But you ain’t really good

We never learn, we been here before

Why are we always stuck and running from

The bullets? The bullets

We never learn, we been here before

Why are we always stuck and running from

The bullets? The bullets

We don’t talk enough, we should open up

Before it’s all too much

How heart wrenching and beautiful, no? Wow! I’m looking forward to this kids’ album when it is released on May 12th. He recorded much of the album in his studio complex in Jamaica. Nice!

Watch the video here:

Also, love the SNL performance where he is outfitted in a plaid jacket, looking much like the 1960s British rockers and nothing like a young kid.

Review: Baby Trend’s Hello Kitty Travel System is a Great Investment

BabyTrend recently introduced a new stroller system with Hello Kitty styling. The popular baby products manufacturer sent me its EZ Ride5 Travel System – Hello Kitty Expressions for a review and from my inspection.

Bottom Line: I think it is a solidly built stroller, with quality construction and durable hardware that will last you a few years and is a good investment because it is mid price range for a stroller system.

What Comes With it: The system includes a car seat and base; and a stroller that can be used as a carriage in baby’s infancy before it can be used in her toddler to early childhood years.

fullsizer-2

Assembly:  The stroller shipped to me in a giant box but I was able to assemble it in under 15 minutes without even reading the instructions! Ha! I imagine had I taken the time to read through first, it would have been even easier and taken less time.

The parts snap into shape and no tools are required.  The car seat snapped easily and securely in the base. The car seat accommodates a 5 to 30 pound child (2.2 and 13.6kg) child who is less than 30 inches (76.2cm).

Installation: It comes with a 5-point safety harness with padded harness covers to protect baby.

I was able to quickly and securely install it without the base in my car seat.

To install it with the base, one must take more time to use the anchor. It has a Peek-a-boo cover so mom can check in on baby on the go.

Once installed, you can check if it is level and at the legal and proper angle using a guide on the side. (see example).

Folding, Travel and Storage: The stroller opens and closes easily with one hand fold.

Once folded, I was able to pick it up and toss it in the back of my SUV with no trouble at all. The stroller was not too heavy for me at all.

The stroller has a parent tray with two deep cup holders, multi position reclining seat which adjusts with a simple pull or tightening of a strap behind the seat. I wish it could recline further back in case the kid wants to take a nap.

You can release the break with a simple step on a lever at the back.

Other features include a covered parent tray with two deep cup holders.  The tray doesn’t snap into place because it is a swing-away and has a snack and/or cup holder. When I was assembling it, because I didn’t read first, I got confused why it didn’t snap into place. snicker Hence, why it’s a good idea to read the instructions first.

It has a large storage basket too.

Overall, at a decent price point at $199.99 on Amazon, you can use this system for several years, making it a pretty good investment. You may need a second base for another vehicle used to transport you baby. Also, if the pads or covers, which are wipe clean and washable get too worn, you can order replacements.

Cons/Criticism:  I would have preferred for the front wheel to be a bit more sturdy and have more swivel for tight areas. Also, the stroller doesn’t recline as far back as I’d want to allow a sleeping child to slumber comfortably. Also, you need two hands to adjust the straps. Something, a mom may not always be able to do if she’s in a tight spot or on the go.

Otherwise, it’s a solid stroller system.

And this stroller will do very well for some young teen mom or homeless young mother who is about to have a baby at the St. Ann’s Home in Hyattsville, Maryland where I donated the stroller system.

In preparation, please check out this updated list of 13 blogs to inspire you and your friends with different ways that you can make your children’s kindergarten graduation an exceptional experience.  These blog entries cover the ceremony, how to make the cap, recipes for some tasty graduation treats and of course some gift ideas.

If you are wondering what kind of ceremony to have for your kindergartener and his classmates, these five blog posts will help you come up with some ideas.  The kids are young, so their attention span isn’t incredibly long. This makes it’s important to keep the ceremony short and to the point.  Many times the ceremony can be held during the school day so as to not add any additional budgetary concerns by having the event at night and requiring additional staff

The Ceremony

The Cap

One of the cutest things you can make for your child to wear on their graduation day is a cap and gown.  Some schools choose to rent the gowns and some own them.  Many schools skip the gowns altogether, but stick with the cap and tassel.  These five blog articles will give you some ideas on how to create caps for the kids to wear that aren’t very expensive.  You can get a group of parents together and make them for every student.

The Treats

It wouldn’t be a celebration without treats.  For food, think of different yummy kid friendly snacks, such as finger foods.  While you are considering what snacks to make, try to come up with some that look like a diploma or graduation cap so that the snacks can tie into the event.  The next five blog posts will give you some tasty ideas to make for your little graduates.  Remember, these treats don’t have to be difficult or expensive to feed the guests at your kindergarten graduation.

The Gift

The graduation gift can be anything from favor bags for all of the graduates to something special from mom and dad to commemorate the day.  These bloggers have ideas for both options.  Whatever the present, make sure you take plenty of pictures of the big day so that you can create a mini brag book or some scrapbook pages to remember this milestone event.  The next five blog entries can help you figure out what gift you want to give the graduate in your life.

One of the best gifts you can give your child is your time.  These blog entries have given you lots of ideas on how to celebrate this milestone in your child’s life, but even if your school doesn’t opt to do a big ceremony you can make the day special for your graduate just by being there.  Remember, before you know it you will be celebrating your child’s high school graduation, so make sure not to miss a minute of this ride of a lifetime.

Authors: Sorry to Rain on Your Twin Obsession Parade, But Twins Are Risky, Period

twins-1628843_1280

Twins are always considered a blessing and lately, they’ve been getting even more glorification, especially with celebs like Beyonce and Amal Clooney making recent headlines for the fact they are carrying twins.

But as with any celebration, there are those who will swoop in to offer a reality check. Like one Daily Mail columnist, Jill Foster, herself a mom, who wrote about how twin pregnancies are high risk and come with a boat load of additional concerns, cautions and care that mom (and dad) must undertake.

“Multiple births are fraught with risk, no matter how rich you are,” Foster writes in a recent column. “Carrying my twin girls was the most arduous and terrifying thing I’ve done — and the professionals agree with me.”

She quotes consultant obstetrician and gynecologist Shazia Malik, a sub-specialist in reproductive medicine at London’s Portland Hospital, who said that “people underestimate the risks of a multiple pregnancy.”

There is a risk “of miscarriage, stillbirth or pre-term birth is around five times higher than a singleton pregnancy. Once premature babies are born, they may spend several weeks or even months in Special Care and may have growth restriction, brain damage, problems with vision and later have developmental delay,” Malik said.

She adds: “There’s a higher risk to the mother, too, of developing gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia, which could lead to death.”

Foster says her identical twin daughters were conceived without medical intervention but that she went thru her pregnancy in fear because her twins developed in the same sac, increasing the chances of dual death were something to go wrong.

“At 11 weeks’ pregnant, I’d learned that the babies were growing in the same amniotic sac. Called a mono-amniotic pregnancy, it meant their umbilical cords could easily become entwined and strangulated.

“Not even one baby would survive if this happened. They would live or die together, and death would be sudden or spontaneous. I lived my pregnancy on a knife edge. It seemed sensible to only tell my closest family and friends.”

She also thinks she suffered post partum depression which is common among moms of multiples.

According to the Twins and Multiple Birth Association (TAMBA), mothers of multiples have almost twice the average risk of postnatal depression and it tends to last longer and can still require treatment up to seven years after the birth.

Then there are the myths of twin pregnancies.  In a new book Twin Mythconceptions: False Beliefs, Fables, and Facts about TwinsDr. Nancy L. Segal attempts to bust over 70 myths regarding twin pregnancies.

Here are some of the top 10 Myths, (many of which we have blogged about before here on Bellyitch), Dr. Segal has identified:

the “Top 10” myths or beliefs about twins, which include:

  • Identical twins can communicate by extrasensory perception or ESP (False)

o   There is no scientific evidence that twins exchange thoughts or ideas by reading each other’s minds—identical twins’ social closeness is better explained by studies showing that their common genes underlie their within-pair communication skills.

  • Older mothers are more likely to conceive fraternal twins than younger mothers (True)

o   Since releasing two eggs at the same time is not typical, this is possibly a reflection of the aging process.

  • Identical twins have identical fingerprints (False)

o   These features, which develop between the 10th and 25th gestational week, are affected by factors such as temperature, intrauterine position and density of amniotic fluid near the fingers.

  • Your consumption of yams and other dietary choices increase the chances of conceiving fraternal twins (True)

o   It is thought that the white yam contains fertility-inducing properties that trick the female body into releasing hormones that promote ovulation–this may partly explain the high fraternal twinning rate among the Yorùbá of western Nigeria.

Dr. Segal is currently Professor of Psychology at California State University, Fullerton and Director of the Twin Studies Center. She has authored more than 200 scientific articles and book chapters, as well as four highly acclaimed books on twins.

The moral of the story is celebrate twin births. Admire them. Dote on moms carrying twins. Offer help and support to family and friends who deliver twins, especially afterwards, given the higher PPD risk. But certainly, be very aware that they are risky pregnancies and deserve extra care and consideration before venturing into IVF in hopes of carrying them if you cannot conceive a set without medical intervention. Don’t let these celebrities out here lull you into a fairy tale la la land.

So Sports Bookies Are Already Taking Bets On Serena Williams’ Fetus, Really!

serena-williams-instagram-photo-fiance-alexis-ohanian

Serena Williams has barely enjoyed a day of the world knowing that she is expecting her first child with fiance Reddit co-founder Alex Ohanian and the bookies are already in her taking bets on her little bambino.

BetOnline.ag, one of the world’s online betting sportsbook site has folks gambling on things like the first letter of the baby’s first name, its gender, weight and whether the 23-time Tennis Grand Slam champ will have twins or triplets!

There is a term for betting on something tangentially related to a sports game, “propositional bet,” concerning an “occurrence or non-occurrence” not directly affecting a game’s outcome. Since Serena is actively training for any tournament, this is very very propositional.

When Beyonce performed during one of the Super Bowls, bookies took bets on whether she’d have a wardrobe malfunction and have one of her boobs exposed. Seriously. This is not a game. ha!

If you want to get in on the fun but with your own impending arrival or one of a family or friend, you can start an online pool using a site like Baby Bookie.

This isn’t new for pregnant celebrities either. When Kate Middleton was expecting her first child, her unknown due date kept the booking business popping then too.

People will bet on anything if they love to gamble!
