STUDY: Women Multitask, Have More Complex Brains Than Men Thus Need More Sleep

woman-918981_960_720

It’s tough being a woman in this world. Women are twice as likely to experience major depression than men and more likely to suffer from heart disease. This could be because they’re often overworked and underpaid, or because on top of it all, they have to deal with ridiculous standards of beauty. Unfortunately, that’s not even the half of it. All this goes to say that women have more than enough reasons to hit the snooze button and sleep in every morning — and science agrees.

After collecting data from more than 200 middle-aged men and women, researchers from the Loughborough University’s Sleep Research Center in Leicestershire, England say women need 20 more minutes of shut-eye than men to function properly because their brains are both more complex and used more, Woman’s Day reported.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, people aged 18 and older should get at least seven to nine hours of sleep.

“Women’s brains are wired differently from men’s and are more complex, so their sleep needs will be slightly greater,” said Jim Horne, director of Loughborough University’s Sleep Research Center, according to The Tab. “The average is 20 minutes more, but some women may need slightly more or less than this.”

The idea that men and women’s brains differ significantly is not new. A 2013 study from the University of Pennsylvania suggested the same thing and confirmed that women outdo men when it comes to multitasking. In fact, the current study cites women’s ability to handle more than one task at the same time as one of the reasons they require more sleep than men.

“Women tend to multitask — they do lots at once and are flexible — and so they use more of their actual brain than men do,” Horne previously told The Australian in 2013. “Because of that, their sleep need is greater.”

In addition to spending more mental energy than men, researchers also found women need more sleep because they experience more consequences from lack of sleep than do men.

“For women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger,” Horne said. “In contrast, these feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.”

Which Celeb Kid Threw the Best Shade at Papps?

celebrity shade

Children of celebrity are often stalked by the press, public, media and paparazzi.

Some kids are better able to handle all of the flashing lights than others. We thought it was adorably cute when a video of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West‘s daughter North told papps “I said no pictures” while being pulled along by her nanny to ballet class one morning.

Over the years, we think in their prime, Prince George (Prince William and Duchess Catherine (nee Kate Middleton)’s son); Blue Ivy (Jay Z and Beyonce‘s daughter); and Suri Cruise (Tom Cruise and Katie Holmesb’ daughter) gave THE best Shade at the papps.

Who do you think, based on the pic above, gave the best shade in one photo?!

How a WAHM can Run her own ‘Camp Mom’

wahm summer

If you are like me and other work at home moms out there, you kind of dread Summer a bit because it means you will be responsible for keeping your children busy, entertained and intellectually stimulated so they don’t have too much Summer brain drain. You will have to do all that while managing your work obligations. Oy vey!

Many send their children to summer camps but a lot of camps only operate on a week or two-week increments and they can get very costly. To ease the challenge, it is a good idea to establish a strict schedule that includes work time, play time, and other activities in between. Without a routine, your work or project obligations can suffer and you risk having your kids play video games and watch TV all day.

I’m re-sharing some suggestions of activities I came up with:

  • Use the morning to institute some reading or math drills time.
  • If you live near a library, use its facilities and take advantage of their summer reading challenges.
  • Go to the craft or dollar store and pick up supplies and incorporate an hour on some days for crafts.
  • Use card or board games for non-electronics hours.
  • Do outdoor activities close to home like make visits to the local park. My middle kid, who is a nature and animal lover, enjoys heading down to our town creek and exploring the dragonflies and frogs. My eldest likes riding his bike around the block and my youngest enjoys playing make-believe with her My Little Pony toys in the front yard.
  • Tack on active play time as well. Take a trip to a local tennis or basketball court. Toss the softball in the backyard. We go on a half mile loop in our town and stop periodically to do jumping jacks, burpees, situps and pushups in the evening. It’s a great way to stave off the summer excess weight gain as well.
  • Plan trips to the beach at least once during the summer.
  • Incorporate treks to the pool on a twice a week basis if you can.
  • If the budget allows, family visits to the roller rink, go cart track or cultural museums are other things you can do.

Here is the schedule I created for myself and hope to follow stringently. I’ve tried to allocate enough time in between for transitioning from activity to activity and made sure I put in ample time to work. You are free to use it to specialize your own schedule. Good luck and have fun!

Is Aoki Lee What Happens When a Celeb Child Grows Being Called Ugly by Public?

aoki lee and ming lee simmons

Ming Lee and Aoki Lee Simmons plant a kiss on their dad Russell Simmons.

Kimora Lee Simmons first two children, daughters Aoki Lee and  Ming Lee have grown to be beautiful young ladies, but having grown in the overly critical public eye has not been easy. This is especially true considering the overemphasis of beauty for young women and how mean the public can be. Social media has been a blessing and curse for celebrities.

On one hand, it gives them access to fans and helps them prove their brand relevance and importance by enabling them to quantify fans.  It can be used as a tool to keep them famous and relevant. On the other hand, social media make it too easy to get direct contact with people in the public eye and along with the good of being able to show off their  filter-free and authentic selves, celebs also open a window and let in all the insecure, petty, jealous and downright meanies who love to troll and diss them too.

And people do not stop when it comes to commenting on the beauty of a celebrity child.

For example, I was doing some online research recently and bumped into Aoki Lee’s Instagram page. I immediately noticed that she doesn’t ever show her face in any of her photos. Now it could be because she wants to de-emphasize her looks seeing as though she is a self-described historian and coder on her page.

It is a contrast from her sister Ming who is as statuesque as their mom and is perfectly fine flossing and showing off her fab self and her fab life that goes with on her Instagram.

We like to drink tea ☕️ A photo posted by Ming Lee Simmons (@mingleesimmons) on

But then I thought that perhaps Aoki hides her face to shield herself from all the negativity that litters the comment section under celebrity social media pages. It’s the type of stuff that has led many to quit social media.

I remember bumping into a lot of shady comments about Kimora’s daughters’ looks on the gossip blogs.

simmons

Thus, there is no wonder some celebs elect to hide their children’s faces from the public. You’ve never even ever seen Kerry Washington or Eva Mendes’ children… ever.

And as I moved over to Ming Lee’s photo, I see that one of the first comments on a really beautiful beach photo comes from a couple of girls calling her ugly and talking bad about her looks.  Most people however reply about her beauty in most of her posts.

And that is a shame that all we care about is the attractiveness of famous people.

It also explains why Beyonce famously shielded her daughter Blue Ivy‘s face when she shared photos of her during her infancy to toddler years. Zoe Saldana is yet to share a photo of her twin boys, Cy and Bowie,  either. Over the pond, singer and TV presenter Rochelle Humes features many snaps of her daughter on Instagram but none of her face.

And those who do like Tia Mowry and Solange Knowles have found themselves having to snap back and put mean trolls in their place who called both their sons ugly, as recently as last year.

Celeb parents can do what they can as long as they can to shield their kids from public scrutiny for as long as possible. It is essential considering the kids never asked for the spotlight. But…the minute they grow into their own and open up their own social media account, they”ll have to face it on their own.

And Aoki’s faceless Instagram page could be an example of one outcome.

Copa America: Soccer is the No. 2 Sport in US for 12-24 year olds

Irrespective of the name, for the first time ever, the Copa America international soccer tournament will be played in the US and it coincides with soccer being the number 2 sport here for kids ages 12 to 24 year olds.

Soccer still lags behind America’s four leading sports: baseball, basketball, hockey and American football but is growing among Gen Y and Zers.

The Economist reports:

Much of the hard running took place in the 1990s, when the successful hosting of the World Cup coincided with a surge of young players and the formation of Major League Soccer (MLS). According to a poll for ESPN, soccer has become the second-most popular sport for 12-24 year olds, after American football, and is the standout leader among Hispanics of the same age.

Last year soccer-playing among boys in high school grew more than any other sport, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations (perhaps capitalising on fears over the safety of American football, where numbers fell).

The success of the national teams, in particular the women’s side, has been a boon. Last year, the Women’s World Cup final attracted a domestic TV audience of 27m—roughly the same as the record-setting college American football championship game in 2015.

Until recently, the challenge had been to keep people interested between

World Cups
. A rise in the number of games from other countries that are broadcast live has helped.

According to Stephen Master of Nielsen, which measures such things, there is now more live soccer available on American TV than in any other country.

Partly as a result, average attendances at MLS games have grown by 56% since 2001. In the past five years they have risen 29%. More people go to MLS games than go to an NBA games or National Hockey League ones (though both basketball and hockey are played in smaller stadiums with higher ticket prices).

When it comes to revenue, soccer is still a minnow: MLS generates just half the revenue of Japanese baseball and a tenth of what the NBA does.

Actress Laura Linney Had a Baby at Age 49 but Unlike Janet Jackson, Kept it Quiet

When Actress Laura Linney gave birth at 49 she had escaped all the excessive scrutiny and blow back that 50-year old Janet Jackson got when the singer announced last month that she was pregnant with her first child.

During an appearance on Live with Kelly (with co-host, husband Marc Consuelos), Linney explains that she wasn’t purposefully keeping it a secret but because it took her so long to finally successfully conceive and carry a child to term, she didn’t want to jinx it.

“I wanted to make sure that my child actually arrived, and was safe and healthy,”the John Adams HBO series star told Kelly Ripa.

She also clarified that she wasn’t purposefully hiding the pregnancy, but didn’t advertise it either. It’s just I “didn’t have a sign that said, ‘Hi, I’m pregnant now,” she added.

“I was just very, very quiet about it — I didn’t hide it intentionally, I just didn’t advertise it,” she added. “So, it was the right thing for me and my family…

The Love Actually actress also  that no one ever questioned her about her pregnancy either.

On the flip side, after Jackson announced she was carrying her own child and not using a surrogate as many people assumed given Jackson’s age, the actress/Jackson family royalty was roasted by all the critics [read: members of the public] who thought she was too old and selfish for welcoming a child so late in her life.

STUDY: Girls Actually Do Better than Boys Using Tech for Problem Solving; Imagine That!

girls tech

Conventional thinking is that boys are better at tech than girls. However data from a recent study shows that eighth-grade girls outperformed boys in understanding and evaluating technology and using it to solve problems, according to Peggy Carr, National Center for Education Statistics acting commissioner said.

The new conclusions are from the first-ever Nation’s “Report Card for Technology and Engineering Literacy.” The test, administered in 2014 to about 21,500 eighth-grade students in public and private schools, assessed students using scenario-based tasks on a computer.

In one exercise, students had to troubleshoot to fix the habitat for a classroom iguana named Iggy. They had to learn about an iguana’s basic needs and then design a habitat that solved two of Iggy’s most pressing problems: a lack of adequate heat and dehydration. Overall, 43 percent of eighth-graders were considered proficient or better at answering questions that required them to think through problems systematically, using technology and engineering to complete a task. The results were that 45 percent of eighth-grade girls were considered proficient or better, compared to 42 percent of boys.

The findings should suggest that although the difference is nominal, we could go further with encouraging more girls to enter into #STEM fields if we quit starting with the presumption that girls aren’t good at it.

Muhammed Ali quotes That can Motivate Children

Today, like many of us, I am mourning the loss of boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

He was not just known, admired and respected in the sports industry but also generally, because of his passionate defense of and work for the voiceless and marginalized in America.

He was king of the trash talk, but a lot of his quotes can be motivating to children as well.

The most common one that is circulating today is:  “If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it—then I can achieve it.”

How wonderful is that a message for children? It is empowering. Another great one is a message about the importance of everyone being true to their conviction and beliefs, independent of what others want them to believe.

It is essential in this era of rampant bullying, in person and online, that kids grow in the confidence to defend themselves and not bow to peer pressure.

“I know where I’m going and I know the truth, and I don’t have to be what you want me to be. I’m free to be what I want,” the champ has said.

Society boxes all of us into certain categories of expectation. Children should grow to explore their passion, and interests independent of what their parents, peers and others say.

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your time here on earth,” Ali has said.

So many times, children grow to expect from their parents, their teachers and others but not to help other people.

We live in an entitlement society. Ali promoted the importance and value of service.

Here are my other favorite messages that are great for children as well:

And when asked once how would he like to be remembered, Ali eloquently and poetically responded:

I’d like for them to say:

He took a few cups of love.

He took one tablespoon of patience,

One teaspoon of generosity,

One pint of kindness.

He took one quart of laughter,

One pinch of concern.

And then, he mixed willingness with happiness.

He added lots of faith,

And he stirred it up well.

Then he spread it over a span of a lifetime,

And he served it to each and every deserving person he met.

“But your soul, and your spirit never die. That’s gonna live forever.”

-Muhammad Ali.
