13 Patriotic Films to Watch on the 4th of July

Because of global quarantine orders still in place and recently tightened for some parts of the United States, a lot of people will be stuck indoors for this Fourth of July Holiday. Granted, they can barbecue on the balcolny, patio or backyard or perhaps head to an open beach but for many people, this Independence Day will be spent inside the house.

You can still commemorate the “official” independence of the United States on the couch by catching one of the wonderful movies already made that are considered Patriotic or which invoke feelings of patriotism during this Holiday.

I’ve curated a list of movies, most of which I have seen and highly recommend, for you to consider watching tomorrow. All of them can be stremed for free to as little as $3.99, that’s much cheaper than most activities you can do outside.

FIRST, join my partners at Prime Video so you can stream these videos from FREE to fee.

HAMILTON

The hit Broadway production was set to tour this Summer but that has been put on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions, however, right before the country shut down, Disney was able to create a theatrical version of this play for the masses!

The award-winning musical is hailed as a creative modern retelling of Alexander Hamilton‘s journey to becoming a founding father of the US. Created by composer, playwright, performer and producer Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton won 11 Tony awards in 2016 and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Drama.

WATCH IT ON DISNEY PLUS (It’s not longer free to preview but for $12.99 per month, you get Disney Plus, HULU And ESPN+

GLORY

Glory is the story of Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) and the infantry men (Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman) of the first all-black volunteer company who struggle fighting the Confederates as well as prejudices from other Union soldiers. The film earned a heap of accolades including three Oscar wins. It will leave you feeling emotional and particularly connected and reeling with emotions also in light of what’s going on these days in America.

BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY

Born on The Fourth of July is the biography of Ron Kovic (Tom Cruise), the story of a man who becomes an anti-war and pro-human rights activist after being paralyzed in the Vietnam War and feeling betrayed by his country.  Kovic is transitioning from the brutality of the Vietnam war into the disillusionment of veterans returning home to an America that has turned against them. Director Oliver Stone‘s film, the middle installment of his lauded Vietnam trilogy, plummets viewers into a contentious topic during a decade when shifting ideals and activism fueled the country.

This was a wonderfully produced and acted movie, in my opinion but don’t take my word for it.

RENT IT

FORREST GUMP

Forrest Gump goes though so many parts of US history that is undoubtedly deserves a spot among the American Patriotic films. Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, fighting in Vietnam or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires people with his childlike optimism. But one person Forrest cares about most may be the most difficult to save — his childhood love, the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright).

This movie is an all-time favorite for a lot of people. It does have a super long running time of close to 3 hours but it is worth it!

RENT IT

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Now the inspiration for many a crowd-pleasing summer blockbuster, Roland Emmerich‘s 1996 masterstroke Independence Day sent Will Smith‘s career into the stratosphere with a fist to an alien’s kisser and one simple line: “Welcome to Earth!”

If you haven’t seen it, which is unlikely, you’d better buckle in for two-and-a-half hours of alien invasion, exploding national monuments and a tear-jerking speech from President Bill Pullman, as America’s bravest (Randy Quaid!): “Fight for our freedom — not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution — but from annihilation.”

RENT IT

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

Set in the small Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Depression, To Kill a Mockingbird follows three years in the life of 8-year-old Scout Finch, her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus–three years punctuated by the arrest and eventual trial of a young black man accused of raping a white woman.

In light of the current strife in America over racial justice, this very old book and film is still sadly timely.

RENT IT

TOP GUN

Pete “Maverick” Mitchell keeps pushing the envelope after years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators. He must soon confront the past while training a new squad of graduates for a dangerous mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice.

This movie still gives me chills especially the high flying aviation spins! You have to check it out for yourself if you are one of the few who haven’t seen it yet! Shame!

CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER

Winter Soldier is the second Captain America movie. It makes sense that it made the list since it features one of the most patriotic superheroes. After the cataclysmic events in New York with his fellow Avengers, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America (Chris Evans), lives in the nation’s capital as he tries to adjust to modern times. An attack on a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague throws Rogers into a web of intrigue that places the whole world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and a new ally, the Falcon, Rogers struggles to expose an ever-widening conspiracy, but he and his team soon come up against an unexpected enemy.

I have not yet seen this one but it is on my list for sure!

RENT IT

MEN OF HONOR

Cuba Gooding Jr. stars in this movie about the first black Navy diver in the US. It is based on the true story of Carl Brashear. Brashear is an ambitious sharecropper who joins the U.S. Navy to become the world’s first black master diver. But as he works through diving training, the bitter and racist Master Chief Billy Sunday (Robert De Niro) sets out to make Carl’s journey as difficult as possible.

Despite the entire Navy doubting his potential and sabotaging his training, the determined Carl proves that he can overcome the discrimination around him. Again, another movie to consume in consideration with the period of racial tension and reckoning occurring in the US right now.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

Captain America: The First Avenger  is considered by many to be the first movie in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe since it is a World-War-II movie that covers 1943 to 1945. It is 1941 and the world is in the throes of war. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) wants to do his part and join America’s armed forces, but the military rejects him because of his small stature. Finally, Steve gets his chance when he is accepted into an experimental program that turns him into a supersoldier called Captain America.

I really enjoyed this movie. It’s a fictional period film but I really loved the costume and fashion of the 1940s and loved it for that alone.

RENT IT

BLACK HAWK DOWN

A real-life army mission in Somalia inspired this 2001 war movie. The film takes place in 1993 when the U.S. sent special forces into Somalia to destabilize the government and bring food and humanitarian aid to the starving population. Using Black Hawk helicopters to lower the soldiers onto the ground, an unexpected attack by Somalian forces brings two of the helicopters down immediately. From there, the U.S. soldiers must struggle to regain their balance while enduring heavy gunfire.

This was one of those movies that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end… I mean, even though I knew the ending, it was still that captivating and well produced! A must watch!

RENT IT

A FEW GOOD MEN

This 1992 movie stars Tom Cruise as a military lawyer and follows the trial of two Marines who have been charged with murder. Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore star in Rob Reiner’s unanimously acclaimed drama about the dangerous difference between following orders and following one’s conscience. Cruise stars as a brash Navy lawyer who’s teamed with a gung-ho litigator (Moore) in a politically explosive murder case. Charged with defending two Marines accused of killing a fellow soldier, they are confronted with complex issues of loyalty and honor, including its most sacred code and its most formidable warrior (Nicholson).

I watched this movie before becoming a lawyer and part of me thinks, this film was a motivating factor. Do put this on your bucket list to watch or rewatch this 4th of July!!!

RENT IT

FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS

This 2006 movie is also about Iwo Jima — specifically about the six men who hoisted the flag at the end of the Battle of Iwo Jima, which is considered to be a major turning point during World War II. In February and March of 1945, U.S. troops fight and win one of the most crucial and costly battles of the war on the island of Iwo Jima. A photo of U.S. servicemen raising the flag on Mount Suribachi becomes an iconic symbol of victory to a war-weary nation. The individuals themselves become heroes, though not all survive the war and realize it.

I have not seen this one, but it looks intriuging to me.

That’s it for now! Happy 4th!!

Study: Women Who Become Pregnant Pegged Weak, Less Committed

Photo by KOBU Agency on Unsplash

Pregnant workers are often stereotyped as incompetent, weak or less committed to their job. To prove it wrong, many pregnant women go beyond their limits and work harder, putting their health at risk.

According to a new study, the majority of pregnant women in physically demanding jobs, about 63%, felt this type of “stereotype threat.” Fear of confirming negative assumptions about pregnant workers led many women to conceal their pregnancy and overperform, even taking actions that placed their health and pregnancy at risk, such as standing for long periods or lifting heavy objects, the study said.

The study, published in the journal Work & Stress, was conducted by researchers from Washington State University. Pregnancy stereotype is not always visible, but it really impacts women in the workplace, said Lindsey Lavaysse, lead author on the paper and recent WSU Ph.D. graduate.

Most organizations have policies for pregnancy accommodation in place, and it’s a legal right. But if the organization’s culture suggests there will be retaliation or that workers will be looked upon differently, then women will shy away from using accommodations that are better for their health and their safety, added Lavaysse.

Singer and Doula Erykah Badu will Deliver Teyana Taylor’s Baby

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SGzbxqPCQ8

Neo-soul singer and actress Erykah Badu will help deliver singer Teyana Taylor‘s second child at home.

Taylor told several media entities this week the news while promoting her new project, “The Album”, which debuted on June 19th that Badu will be there to usher in Taylor and hubby Cleveland Cavalier‘s Iman Shumpert‘s newest baby into the world.

Badu is a licensed doula with over a decade of experience and who has delivered several babies already.

Home births are nothing new for this family.

Taylor gave birth to her first child, daughter Iman Jr, on their bathroom floor with the help of dad Iman senior in 2015. The baby was crowning and arriving too fast for the couple to get Taylor to the hospital in time and had to take matters into their own hands.

We have a feeling they will be just fine this second time around.

Badu even helped deliver model Slick Woods’ baby last year.

They’re keeping it in the family. Badu is featured on the song “Low Key” on Taylor’s album which  includes a remix to the chorus of Badu’s 90s hit song, “Next Lifetime.”

Badu says she was called to become a doula in 2001 after helping deliver a friend’s baby, according to a 2011 magazine interview she gave  to PEOPLE magazine’s print edition

“I’ve always had a mothering nature. But I didn’t plan on becoming a doula. I just wanted to care for my family and friends,” she told the celebrity mag.  “When I saw the baby, I cried. I knew what I was supposed to do with my life.”

She then read up on the job, and  began offering her services for free to family and friends. She eventually became the spokeswoman for the International Center for Traditional Childbearing and later got certified with the intention to open up a chain of centers in the inner cities, the Toronto Sun reported back in 2011.

Yeah So a NM Mom Is Selling Wigs for Babies

In “I’ve done seen it all” news, an Albuqurque, New Mexico mom is selling custom wigs for babies. * insert blank stare emoji here *

That’s right! The stylist, Vonn Bamb Wilson, whose hair stylist  Instagram handle is @stylesbyvbb posted a photo of her baby daugthter in a headband with a curly wig attached. In a promo caption introducing the product posted this past April, she asked “Is your baby bald headed , welp I can solve that.”

A tik tok of a stylist outfitting a baby, gnawing on a snack and sitting in a baby booster seat went slight viral, bringing renewed attention to the product.

Wilson, who is also a logo designer, Instagram model, says her daugher, Khaleesi Emery, was the inspiration for the line of custom headbands called Kake Headbands and she encouraged people to follow her daughter’s Instagram page and the page for the product at @kakesheadbands.

She also posted a photo of a 3-year old girl with Alopecia named Yanaiah Gutierrez wearing the hair band.

In any event, the stylist has since removed her instagram page for the headband or it doesn’t exist. Meanwhile, the hair on the baby’s hair looks fine today.

Palindromes: The Cool New Name Trend For Babies

Trending in baby naming right now is palindromes, names spelled the same forward and backward like Anna and Ada and Bob.

Popular baby names site Names.org Names.org released a list this week of the  Most Popular Palindromes and Names with Meanings Spelled Backwards, after analyzing Social Security Administration data since 1890, and trending interest from millions of visitors on their website in 2020.

The trend is actually not that new though it is a phenomenon of this millennium . Back in 2000, rock star Sonny Sandoval explained the meaning of his daughter Nevaeh’s name on MTV.

From the Greek term palíndromos which means “to run backwards,” these trending names are great for only children, siblings or twins.

For instance, a set of boy and girl twins could be Aidan and Nadia, girl twins could be Ellen and Nelle, and boy twins could be Ira and Ari.

In case you are interested, here are the 10 most popular palindromes since 1890:

1)      Anna: 896,000

2)      Hannah: 434,000

3)      Ava: 266,000

4)      Ana: 102,000

5)      Ada: 96,000

6)      Bob: 93,000

7)      Otto: 33,000

8)      Eve: 25,000

9)      Asa: 18,000

10)  Elle: 14,000

Not suprising,  the forward version of palindrome baby names are more popular than the backwards one as you can see from the below chart but that shouldn’t stop you from naming your twins theses monikers if you are expecting and still weighing options:

Backwards

1.       Leon: 168,000 babies since 1890

Noel: 61,000 babies since 1890

Nadia: 42,000

3.       Nevaeh: 80,000

STUDY: Hispanic, Black Pregnant COVID Patients Higher Risk for Hospitalization

A US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study published today in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report found that pregnant women with COVID-19 are at increased risk for hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and mechanical ventilation but not death.

Researchers studied the disease surveillance data of 8,207 pregnant women infected with the novel coronavirus and 83,205 nonpregnant women aged 15 to 44 years from Jan 22 to Jun 7 to determine whether the immunologic and physiologic changes of pregnancy put them at risk for more severe outcomes.

About one third (31.5%) of pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, had been hospitalized, versus 5.8% of their infected nonpregnant peers, but the researchers were unable to distinguish between hospitalization for coronavirus-related symptoms versus those for pregnancy-related procedures such as delivery.

After adjustment for age, underlying conditions, and race/ethnicity, pregnant women were 5.4 times more likely to be hospitalized, 1.5 times more likely to need intensive care, and 1.7 times more likely to require mechanical ventilation than nonpregnant women.

Sixteen of 8,207 pregnant women and 208 of 83,205 nonpregnant counterparts died of the novel coronavirus, or 0.2% for both groups.

Hispanic, black pregnant women more affected

When stratified by age, hospitalization, ICU admission, receipt of mechanical ventilation, and death were reported more often by women aged 35 to 44 years than by those aged 15 to 24 years, whether or not they were pregnant. When stratified by race/ethnicity, the rate of ICU admission for pregnant Asian women was 3.5%, compared with 1.5% in all pregnant women.

Overall, 97.1% of pregnant women and 96.9% of nonpregnant women reported COVID-19 symptoms. While both reported similar percentages of cough (more than 50%) and shortness of breath (30%), pregnant women were less likely to report headache, muscle aches, fever, chills, and diarrhea and more likely to have chronic lung disease, diabetes, and heart disease.

Among pregnant women, 46.2% were Hispanic, 23.0% were white, 22.1% were black, and 3.8% were Asian, versus 38.1%, 29.4%, 25.4%, and 3.2%, respectively, of their nonpregnant peers. “Although data on race/ethnicity were missing for 20% of pregnant women in this study, these findings suggest that pregnant women who are Hispanic and black might be disproportionately affected by SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy,” the authors said.

‘Married To Medicine’s Quadd Welcomes Baby Girl via Adoption

Married with Medicine star Quad Webb is the latest Bravolebrity to welcome a child and the second in a few months to do so solo.

Webb introduced the world to her new daughter, Ariana, and recently shared a tender first photo on her Instagram page this week.

Just last week, rapper Iggy Azalea decided to use the Black Lives Matter movement to introduce the world to her new son she had delivered weeks prior with beau and fellow rapper Playboi Carti.

Similarly, Webb did too, using the motto of the movement to share a first photo of a  baby born months ago in April.

“Life is precious, it should be protected and valued #blacklivesmatter,” Quad captioned a photo of her daughter grasping her thumb.

She had previously announced the April birth and plans to retrieve the baby named from her birth home safely during the COVID era.

“It is exciting news, and there are so many moving pieces. My mom and I are extremely happy to welcome baby Ari to her new village,” Quad told Bravo TV‘s media subsidiary The Daily Dish in a statement. “She was born on April 8th, and since then we have been working to get her home to begin what will surely be a joyous, successful and opportunity filled life.”

She also talked about the rapid changes she’s had in her life since finalizing her divorce from Dr. Gregory Lunceford whom she was married to during most of her stint on the Bravo TV franchise show.

“There’s so much happening so fast! I’ve been in the process of looking for a new home, and now it has a completely different meaning,” she shared. “I’m eager and anxious, as my family means so much to me. We thank you in advance for all of your prayers and well wishes.”

Another Bro TVav star Golnesa “GiGi” Gharachedaghi delivered her first child solo as did executive producer and host Andy Cohen who welcomed a son via surrogatre last year.

Congrats!

How to Clean Your Newborn

Bellyitch Rewind

Everybody knows that babies get dirty, however, only parents know the true extent of just how dirty that can get. New parents are in for a wild ride of drool, tears and the occasional diaper explosion.

It can get messy and stressful, but those tender moments when your baby looks up at you and smiles make it all worth it. Baby’s bath time is important, yet for the first few months, you aren’t going to need to bathe them every day (until they start getting dirty, it’s recommended that you bathe them only two or three times a week).

However, hygiene is still an important part of their daily routine that you are going to want to instill in them. So, how do you keep your newborn clean between baths?

Regular Diaper Changes

Newborns under a month old should have their diapers changed right around ten times a day – definitely not less than six. They will typically have around three or four bowel movements a day. As they get older this number will change, below is a table detailing estimates of how many times a day you should change your baby and how many diapers a month that equates to:

Age Diaper Changes Per Day # Diapers Per Month

0-1 Month 10-12 320

1-5 Months 8-10 240

5-9 Months 8 240

9-12 Months 8 240

Remember, the above numbers are just an estimate – some babies will require more, some will require less. Diapers also need to be changed as soon as it is noticed that they are soiled. Urine and bacteria can lead to painful rashes that take time to treat.

Trim Their Nails

One of the most dreaded parts of taking care of your newborn is when it comes time to trim their little nails. Just like the rest of them, their nails have been growing since before they were born – so they may need a trim during the first week (and every two or three days of the first three weeks, until the nails harden and stop growing so quickly).

While one of your older relatives might suggest nibbling on them, you may peel them too far back which is, obviously, immensely painful. When clipping, hold your baby’s finger tight and press the the fingertip pad down and away from the nail – and of course, always using special baby clippers or scissors. Snip while following the gentle curve of their fingernail.

Wipe Them Down

No matter whether you’re at home or at the grocery store, you should always be sure to keep some baby wipes handy. You never know when they’re going to spit-up or have some other kind of fluid disaster – so be prepared for everything! It’s also a good idea to keep clean swaddling cloths on you at all times, too. Just like the top sheet on your bed keeps your blankets from becoming dirty, these handy baby sheets can be quickly swapped out for a clean one upon soiling.

When it comes down to it, you want to keep your baby as clean as possible to give them the best possible hygiene for a healthy and happy life!
