Evangeline Lilly Trending for Her Post-Birthing Baby Bikini Bod Annoyed a Few People

evangeline lilly ant-man http://bellyitchblog.com

Lost alum Evangeline Lilly was trending all day today because of an E!Online report announcing the now mom-to-2 was spotted on a beach wearing a bikini two months after giving birth to her second child in Hawaii.

Backtrack, Lilly is great about not announcing her pregnancies. It wasn’t until she was 8 months along before a wayward member of the paparazzi spotted her in Hawaii where she lives often with her longtime partner Hawaii born Norman Kali, a production assistant she met on the Lost set.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies star announced the second pregnancy by showing up this summer to the red carpet for her movie Ant-Man‘s première.  She was already 7 months pregnant.

And even now, the Canadian-born managed to avoid the press for two months after giving birth, having not released a statement about the birth of her second child at all. If it wasn’t for the papps again, we’d still not know she had the kid.  Lily and Kali are parents to 4-year old son Kahekili Kali.

The fact the news of the bikini was the reason she trended upset some in social media and the blogsphere. We’ve discussed often on Bellyitch before how pop culture and gossip media’s obsession with the post-body celebrity can be dangerous for the message it sends to current and future new moms, and to society in general.

Blogger Jenny Rapson of  Mommin It Up vented on For Every Mom today:

“I understand celebrities are newsworthy, and I am not saying a celebrity having a child isn’t news,” Rapson penned. “I am perturbed at the PRESS for making this NEWS.”

She then went on to highlight three things why this actress’ body being newsworthy upset her:

“And herein lies my issue: why is this news? Why the excitement about a beautiful mom showing some skin after having a baby? Is it because…

  • GASP! Women’s bodies are certainly ruined by children and they should never show them!
  • OH THANK GOD SHE NOW LOOKS PERFECT—AS IF SHE NEVER HAD A BABY! PRAISE JESUS SHE ESCAPED HER TERRIBLE MOM BOD FATE AND CAN
  • WALK AROUND IN PUBLIC WITHOUT PEOPLE RUNNING AWAY SCREAMING!

See, Moms? You can look hot after having a baby! You can achieve the ultimate goal of beauty in life AND be a mom, too. Now hit the gym!”

Well, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

And Rapson wasn’t the only one. Here are some of the reactions we captured of folks in social media .

Eco Friday: How to have a Last-Minute Costume Swap for Halloween

costume swap bellyitchblog.com

Costume Swaps are Eco-Friendly. National Costume Swap Day was last Saturday, but honestly, it’s not too late to host a last-minute Eco-Friendly Costume Swap for next Saturday, Halloween!

Costume swaps are a fun way to save money and reduce waste for Halloween. Here is how to organize one. These are our condensed version of tips we spotted over at Green Halloween.

Secure a location. If you are hosting a small swap, you can do it in your living room or a cleaned out garage. If you live in a cul-de-sac, you can organize all of the neighbors to get  involved.  Make sure there is room to organize the costumes.  Make sure there is ample parking for those coming from farther away. Decide what you will do with leftover costumes like donate them to Goodwill or some other charity.

Promote – Put up signs in the neighborhood, announce it on the town listserv or pin up notices at central places like the public library or a local coffee house to announce the Swap.

Plan and Set Up – Collect costumes costumes in advance so those who come early can have an assortment of options to choose from

Decide how you will set up the swap. Do swappers need to leave a costume to take a costume? (one for one) Or, will your swap operate on the “leave what you can, take what you need” principle? Either way, here are two ways to organize the event:

Option #1: Prior to the swap (days or hours – depending on how many people you expect), swappers bring the costumes they want to exchange. They receive a stamp on the hand or small token (to avoid using paper tickets) for each costume to use on the day of the event. Once costume(s) is selected, the participant shows the stamp or returns the token.

Option #2: When the swap starts, everyone enters with costumes they are exchanging. Costumes are immediately placed in areas by size and swappers can make one new selection.

Get some help. An event like this is something one person can take on, but why not make it a group effort? The more the merrier as long as everyone is clear on expectations. Ask friends and family, neighbors, parents at your child’s school, members of your church, etc. Let them know this is a community effort, that the purpose is to save resources (and money) and that helping to host can be F-U-N!

Gather supplies:

  • racks or tables
  • signs for racks or tables (Recycled cardboard, markers and tape)
  • hangars if you are using racks
  • trash and recycling receptacles
  • Mirrors

Other activities

You may also want to incorporate others in your event. Vendors selling (or giving away) appropriate, eco-friendlier items, or local health/green-focused organizations may host a Halloween themed activity. Show parents how to make their own face paints or roll beeswax candles.

Swap! On the day of:

  • Costumes are laid out on tables or hung on hangars according to size with the table/rack clearly marked. Renting or borrowing a clothing rack can be very helpful toward keeping costume presentation organized and appealing to “shoppers.”
  • Kids can try on costumes, but have enough “staff” available to supervise to ensure things are hung back up or laid on the right table.
  • Owners can reclaim costumes that are not swapped, or donate leftovers to shelters or GoodWill type stores.
  • Have a photographer take photos (with parent’s written permission) or shoot some video of the event (ditto on the permission), and post them here or on our FB page.
  • Green halloween

Additional ideas:

  • Ask consignment shops and thrift stores if they want to get involved.

Have a section for accessories; mismatched pieces of costumes that creative kids can use to put original get-ups together.
  • Stage a dressing-room area. Or, you may want to encourage parents to bring kids dressed in a leotard or swim suit to avoid having to undress.
  • Ask people to bring a shopping bag. Do not provide them.
  • State that costumes should be in good to excellent condition, no significant spots, holes etc. (unless they are supposed to be there!). You should note on written materials that you have the right to reject costumes based on whatever criteria you like.
  • You can limit items that are contributed, i.e. if you won’t want masks, plastic costumes, etc.
  • Request that people behave well. There should be no pushing etc. You might want to have a “security person” on site just in case. If you are concerned about this, you can always ask people to register in advance for the swap, assign a time and allow them to enter in small groups.
  • At the end of the event, how about staging a costume parade? A business might contribute some healthy treats or treasures to give each child.
  • Have a microphone available. You might want to do an introduction and let people know why you’re doing this, reinforce any rules (i.e. good behavior), point out the rest rooms, let people know about upcoming Green Halloween events in your community, encourage use of recycling containers and encourage everyone to have fun.
  • Be sure to have plenty of people assigned to “roaming” on hand to ensure your event goes smoothly.
  • If you have food at your swap, make it healthy and avoid paper wrappings, napkins etc. and/or provide compost bins.

HAVE FUN AND GOOD LUCK!

Whose ‘No Pay’ Craiglist Ad for A Comedian to Gig a ‘Celebrity’ Baby Shower is This?

Ok. No seriously, who is throwing a baby shower for a celebrity in the Chelsea district on New York City and trying to recruit a comedian last minute to come work for free…on Craigslist?

We got questions.

Did somebody’s intern dropped the ball?

Who squandered the entertainment budget on donuts?

Or did we miss the memo? Are we booking celebrity events on Craigslist now?

Is this a thing?

In the ad, under the category “gigs” listed yesterday, October 23, the anonymous requester brazingly announces the gig is for “No Pay”.

Huh? Where they do that at?

And here we thought people in the category of “celebrity” had money or at least had friends who could afford to pay for the entertainment at a shower thrown for them.

Guess not.

Yet, the ad is judging potential applicants, saying  essentially don’t apply unless you’re CREDIBLE.

Hmmm like as credible as a craigslist ad for a celebrity baby shower?

And then it goes forward to demand that anyone seeking the job have performed at “legit clubs” and ideally on Comedy Central.
So the ideal candidate worked his or her butt off and eventually appeared on a national cable show dedicated to comedy but sucked so bad, s/he’s back combing craigslist for no

pay gigs?

If the exchange for the pay is exposure, then isn’t being on Comedy Central a bigger resume booster than gigging at some possibly D-list celeb’s baby shower?

And you got to send “a reel and a resume” but can’t contact the cheap party thrower for unsolicited offers.

Um…if you’re advertising on Craigslist, it seems to us that you probably need a wider pull of services so you should be taking these offers.

just sayin’.

Maybe we’re just being snarky and this is totally legit and common.

If so, then, “wow”, that means it’s damn hard being a comic in 2015.

Anyway it was great comic relief for this Friday morning.

TGIF, everyone!

ps. We’ll find out soon whose celebrity baby shower this was for…stay tuned or ping us if you got answers.

Social Media Buzz: MTV Teen Mom2 Star Leah Messer loses Custody of Twins

leah messer kids and jeremy

Last week, Leah Messer star of MTV reality TV show Teen Moms 2,  lost custody of her twin girls, Ali and Aleeah to their dad Corey Simms. The couple were awarded 50/50 joint custody in 2013, according to reports. However, Simms cited plead for full custody and won it, according to reports. The judge revoked all custody after the girls’ school records indicated consistent tardy arrivals.

Messer was initially on the show 16 & Pregnant and then went on to become a full cast member of Teen Mom franchise that spun off from that and has been on Teen Mom2 for several seasons.

I don’t follow the stars of this show much, but it was trending on Twitter and Facebook all day today, so I figured I should mention it for those of you who don’t keep up with trending topics and have been following the behind the scenes lives of these folks in the off season. We last featured her when she gave birth to her third child, daughter, Addie, with then husband Jeremy Calvert (above).

Reports indicate he will be seeking full time custody of now 2-year old Addie.

Tough break. I do hope this jolt will be the kick she needs to improve her life so she can regain some custody. That’s got to be hard on a mom.

Stanford Students Created a $300 version of a $20K Incubator For Babies in the Developing World

embrace warmer

Each year, more than 1 million babies die on their birth day.

About 20 million premature and low birth weight babies are born worldwide each year with 4 million dying within the first 4 weeks of life, according to the World Health Organization.  This amounts to 450 babies that die each hour and a substantial number of those that die are born in the developing world where there are not enough incubators which cost about $20,000.

Also, many babies are born in rural areas far from hospitals with adequate facilities to care for a premature newborn. A lot of the babies really just need warmth an incubator provides during those first crucial months.  Some babies are born with so little fat and many are unable to control their own body temperatures.

About 6 years ago, four Stanford University students were challenged in a class project to design a portable life-saving incubator that cost less than $300. The group, led by then female student, Jane Chen traveled to India, where the caregiver to patient ration is 1:2,000, to research and perfect their design.

And they did it, creating the Embrace Infant Warmer.

incubator and embrace

“Incubators are vital because the internal organs of premature babies are not fully developed at birth,” Chen wrote in a 2010 piece on CNN.com. Chen is now the co-founder and CEO of Embrace Innovations, a social enterprise that aims to help the 20 million premature and low birth weight babies born every year, through a low cost infant warmer.

She explained the concept and design of Embrace:

Embrace Infant Warmers are non-electric, miniature sleeping bags that use a removable wax insert, which can be heated safely using hot water. The product is easy to sanitize and can be heated over and over again.

The product has been designed specifically for resource-constrained settings. It looks like a small sleeping bag, which incorporates a wax-like phase change material in a plastic pouch that melts at body temperature (98.6 F) to keep the baby at a constant temperature.

The PCM pouch can be heated with either a short burst of electricity or by placing it in boiling water. Once melted, it can maintain a constant temperature for up to eight hours, after which it can be reheated.

In addition to being low cost, the product does not require a constant supply of electricity, complements existing practices such as skin-to-skin care and is extremely safe and intuitive to use.

After creating a prototype, the team launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to produce their first round of Warmers used in India.  Today, Embrace ships the warmers to local clinics and other areas in the developing worldwide.  Costing less than 1% of a traditional incubator, the Embrace Infant Warmer  has helped over 150,000 babies to date.

The goal is to save the lives of 20 Million babies and they are well on their way. Embrace is not stopping there. This May, it launched another campaign and are creating a line of affordable healthcare technologies for women and children around the world.

This invention looks like a tiny sleeping bag and it s helped save 150 000 babies.
Good stuff!

Drew Barrymore Opens Up About Recent Postpartum Depression

Drew Barrymore is on my the cover of PEOPLE magazine this week and in it, she opens up about family life with husband, art consultant Will Kopelman and their two daughters: 3-year old Olive, 3, and 18month-old Frankie.

She also talks about having a brief bout of postpartum depression after she birthed Frankie.

On experiencing postpartum depression after Frankie’s birth: “I didn’t have postpartum the first time so I didn’t understand it because I was like, ‘I feel great!’ The second time, I was like, ‘Oh, whoa, I see what people talk about now. I understand.’ It’s a different type of overwhelming with the second. I really got under the cloud. I just got right on the idea of, where do I need to be the most? Fifty-fifty would be ideal but life doesn’t work like that. Life is messy. It was just really challenging and I felt overwhelmed. I made a lot of decisions and I definitely changed my work life to suit my parenthood.”

On life after PPD, which was “short-lived, probably six months”: “It’s really important [to stay in the moment]. I was in the kids’ class with Frankie and Olive this morning and I started fretting about some piece of work news that was just stressful. You know, in like the Broadway Babies class and it’s the one-hit wonders day, and they’re singing I don’t even know what song, and we’re all doing our lollipop drums and I just thought, ‘Save it until after class.’ One thing at a time.”

10 Facts About First Born Children

first born facts

Yet another scientific research study was released recently stating that first born children are usually smarter than their younger siblings.

This tickles me pink being a first born myself. I am a big believer in birth order playing a role in the development and personality of a child.

These are 10 facts from our friends at Nanny.net about the effect of birth order on the eldest children, some of which may shed new light on behavioral quirks and personality traits of your firstborn.

  1. They’re More Reliable – First born children are often expected to look after younger siblings and take on a greater role of responsibility than children born into the family after them, and as a result they often grow into more reliable and dependable adults.
  2. They Tend to Be Higher Achievers – Almost half of all United States presidents have, to date, been first born in their families. In contrast, only four have been last born children. High achievers tend to be eldest children, who place a higher value on achievement and success than their younger siblings.
  3. They’re Natural Leaders – When a child is born first, she’s generally something of an authority figure over her younger siblings. That dominance often becomes a hardwired personality trait, which leaves them more likely to find themselves in positions of leadership in the adult world.
  4. They’re More Likely to be Perfectionists – Unlike younger siblings, who tend to have a more relaxed approach to life, first born children are more likely to be perfectionists, often setting almost impossibly high goals for themselves.
  5. They’re Not as Likely to Rebel – Alfred Adler, the father of the birth order psychology movement, asserted that older children often feel “dethroned” by new babies in the household and, as such, may be more likely to actively seek the approval of their parents and the other adults in their lives. In many cases, this drive to please continues throughout adulthood and they’re less likely to be rebellious as teenagers.
  6. They Benefit from Teaching Younger Siblings – When firstborns teach their younger siblings new skills or information, they’re benefiting from what’s known as “the tutor effect.” That’s one of the reasons why firstborn kids tend to be higher academic achievers and to pursue intellectual careers as adults.
  7. They Care More About What People Think of Them – Free-spirited people who aren’t concerned with what society as a whole or even the people closest to them think about their choices tend to be younger siblings, as firstborns generally have a very real drive to be people pleasers.
  8. They Value Organization and Order – Firstborns are more likely to be list-makers, organizers and to bring order to their surroundings than their more haphazard, disorganized counterparts who are lower in birth order.
  9. They’re Self-Motivated – Because of their desire to please and determination to succeed, older kids tend to be more self-motivated than their younger siblings and to require less encouragement to work towards the goals they’ve set for themselves.
  10. They’re Individuals – There are more studies on the subject of birth order than one could shake a stick at, but one thing that holds true across the board is that there’s more at play than simple birth order when it comes to determining a child’s personality. Genetics, for instance, will have some role in the habits and methods of a person’s behavior, as will environment and other important factors. Knowing a bit about the typical firstborn pattern is helpful, but be careful not to box your child in with expectations that may not hold true in her particular case.
