Which Halloween Candy Has the Most Sugar (INFOGRAPHIC)

halloween candy

Halloween is for candy and candy usually means sugar!

I just finished stocking up on candy to give out to Trick-or-Treaters who will be knocking on our door tomorrow. Of course, I couldn’t resist but sneak a few pieces. I have no will power over Snickers! They are my fave.

Alas, Halloween also marks the start of the season of wrecking diets and healthy eating plans.  After Halloween comes Thanksgiving and then Holiday parties and then Christmas cookies, pies, cakes and other goodies.  Oy!

It’s a good time to watch the sugar intake now, not just for yourself but also the children in your family.

Want to know which confection as the most sugar? Sugar Babies have a whopping 15 grams of sugar followed by Blow Pops which have 13 grabs of sugar. A safer bet would be a Dum Dum lollipop which has just 4 grams of sugar or a packet of Smarties which has 5 grams of sugar.

Here’s a graphic on how the most popular candies stack up against each other:

Designer Liz Lange Flips Maternity Don’ts On their Head with These 5 Style Tips

Liz Lange was doing maternity chic before maternity chic existed. The New York Fashion designer revolutionized  a market that was misunderstood.

I know it well.

When I was expecting my first child over 13 years ago, the maternity fashion industry wasn’t as robust as it is now. Pregnant women who wanted fashionable clothing had to be creative, sew their own pieces or mix non-maternity items with the limited options available then.

A friend of mine had a trunk show with these fab and super cute colorful and chic clothes that designer Liz Lange released. I was giddy and headed over and scored some awesome pieces. I wore a couple pieces to my baby showers. I still own some of them today which is a testament to their high quality and durability. Liz Lange, inventor of “Maternity chic“,  is still creating gorgeous maternity clothes, with an imprint that can be found in Target and Target.com and is available widely to many more women.

Turned away by high end stores who told her pregnant women don’t care what they look like and didn’t agree initially to stock her designs, Lange persevered and kept on keeping on and eventually scored some celebrity clients like Kelly Ripa and Cindy Crawford. She was THE celebrity stylist before it was a thing.  And not to be discouraged by naysayers, Lange sold her line in trunk shows through independent associates like the one I purchased my Liz Lange wear from back then. There was indeed a market for quality high end maternity clothes and Lange tapped into it when no one else was doing it, beginning in 1997 when she launched the line out of her home office.

Lange, who is also a mom of two, has never believed pregnant women should be constricted by archaic ideas of what moms-to-be should and shouldn’t wear while pregnant. Everyone’s got an opinion and not all are correct. Since then, Liz Lange New York grew from an appointment only showroom to a flagship store on Madison Avenue, a partnership with Nike and eventually becoming the first Maternity line to show at New York Fashion week.

“As the pioneer of ‘maternity chic”, I’ve spent almost 20 years in the maternity clothing business, forging licensing deals with Nike and Target, with a maternity line available exclusively at Target stores and Target.com,” the busy entrepreneur and mom  says. “In that time, I’ve heard countless rules and style mantras regarding what pregnant women can and can’t do when it comes to style- and I’ve broken them all! My maternity line at Target focuses wearability and confidence with clothes that are comfortable, affordable, and always chic.”

The fashion maven, who is also a cervical cancer survivor, breaks down some myths and offers 5 ways to maternity myth Style Don’ts that are really Style Do’s for us:

1. DO: Stripes- We’ve all heard the rule, “horizontal stripes make you look wider.” Not so! For a mom-to-be sporting a baby bump, horizontal stripes can accentuate your shape. Also diagonal stripes can create a dramatic effect.

Try this striped dress from the Liz Lange for Target collection, which can be dressed up or down for endless style. The stretch material will grow with your growing belly, and the ruched sides keep it flattering through all stages of pregnancy.

2. DO: Bold Prints- Every woman needs some pieces in her wardrobe that demand attention and inspire confidence. I always make sure to feature a few patterns that pop when designing my own maternity collection.

Feel free to maintain your sense of style by accentuating your bump with all of your favorite patterns and colors.

3. DO: Shop Regular Sizes- A new expecting mother might think any shopping she does for her maternity clothing has an expiration date, but there are lots of great transitional pieces that are perfect for pregnancy and will still fit flawlessly into a post-baby wardrobe.

liz lange maternity

Instead of a maternity sweater, why not try this Liz Lange for Target item. The loose structure and flowy shape will look great as Maternity or New Mom Chic!

4. DO: Heels- Of course towering 6” heels are difficult even for the most experienced (and not pregnant) heel wearers, but that doesn’t mean they need to be written off completely.

liz lange maternity dos bellyitchblog.com

Consider a shoe with a wider or kitten heel for a little bit of height that won’t put too much pressure on your back. The more delicate the heel, the more lengthened your legs will look!

5. DO: Go Sleeveless– Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you need to stay completely covered. There are lots of super flattering sleeveless looks that highlight your figure.

Remember- the bigger your bump, the smaller your arms look!

Good luck preginistas! Shake up the expected and knock em dead breaking the rules.

kandi burruss update

Second-time Mom-to-Be Kandi Burruss, star of BravoTV‘s Real Housewives of Atlanta, is also in the running for the hardest working preggers celeb.

The entrepreneur already has a successful adult toy individual franchise company (Bedroom Kandi), a popular late night web show (Kandi Koated Nights), a clothing boutique in Atlanta (TAGS) and a rising music indie label, all while balancing several reality TV shows, to add to her decade career penning chart toppers for music industry’s biggest names.

She recently announced that she and her husband Entertainment Producer Todd Tucker are planning to open a family restaurant.  “My hubby & I are putting together our family restaurant & getting some tips from @chefjaaion. #coming2015 #ILoveToEatSoYouKnowItsGonnaBeGood #Foodie,” the former 90s girl band singer captioned a photo of herself with Tucker and friends on Instagram recently.

The Grammy-award winning multi-platinum songwriter also just wrapped a family maternity shoot with Atlanta-based celebrity photographer Drexina Nelson.

This phenomenal-looking shoot was right after appearing with her entire family in the infamous Ebony magazine “Black Family ISSUES” edition with the controversial photo of a shattered image of The Huxtables from the famous 80s show The Cosby Show on the cover.

“I finally got my copy of the new #EbonyMagazine family issue that includes my family!” Burruss captioned the IG photo collage of the images of her family in the magazine. “Our family discusses the topic of blended families. Thank you @kiernamayo for including us in this issue! Wow I can’t believe my family is included in the issue with the Obama family & the controversial cover of the #Huxtables. #CosbyShow #RHOA #FirstFamily #Presidential #Obama”

Fab!

5 Things I had on My Pre-Baby Bucket List (And $75 Pre-Natal Product GIVEAWAY)

pre baby bucket list bellyitchblog.com happyfamily.com

After getting married  a couple years after law school, my husband and I decided to start a family, but before then, I already knew that there were things on my pre-baby bucket list I had to enjoy before taking on the challenges of parenthood. We didn’t call it a “bucket list” back then, but the concept was the same.

I was one of the first among my friends to marry and would be among the first to have kids, still I had a few other law school buddies who had children so I knew of all that was involved in child rearing.

Being the eldest of 4 children in my family, I had spent a substantial amount of my pre teens to college years babysitting, looking after my siblings or helping relatives and family friends care for cousins and other children in their family. So, I had an inkling of what was involved with child-rearing. I was well in the know that I had to get my free-spirit on before joining mommyhood.

Here is a list of things I did before jumping into the parenting pool.

traveling

1. Traveled on a moment’s notice – Back then and still today, last dirt cheap minute fares to far off places, spas and other locales came easy. Once you signed up for last minute deals emails, you could get an alert in your inbox on Thursdays, for example, purchase your ticket by Friday and be in the air after work. After children, the opportunities for such impromptu adventures are near impossible.

2. Spend Freely – Owing to number #1, most of the money you earned belong to you so you could splurge on a last minute trip, buy that expensive handbag, go out to eat twice a week because there was no other person’s college fund you needed to be saving for or some baby’s 1st birthday party you needed to use up all your rainy day fund to plan and throw.

3. Sleep in– Before kids, Sundays meant sleeping in. Saturdays wouldn’t yet involve games, practices, rehearsals, recitals, trips to the zoo, museums, and festivals. While all of those things are fun and I really enjoy cheering my children on and watching them perform or enjoy themselves at a craft fair, sleeping in and reading the Sunday paper in bed all day was a luxury too I enjoyed pre-having a family of my own.

4. Not have to clean regularly – After children, you no longer have the privilege of cleaning your home on Saturday and not have it messed up again until mid week or well into the following week before needing a new cleaning. Having a family of three or more means having more people to clean up after and less uncluttered spaces because families can be messy.

5. Take adult classes – I didn’t grow up in a family where we could afford classes, so before having kids, I enrolled myself in a host of fun classes: ballet, tennis, adult gymnastics, pottery, painting, cooking, whatever was available, I did. And again, having disposable income for myself, I could afford to!

Having enjoyed that life, I wouldn’t trade in the one I have now for anything in the world.  I am glad my husband and I had a chance to grow a little nest egg so we could buy a home for our future kids to grow up in. Today, there are more  resources, inventions, services and products available to parents that I wish I had available to me.

For example, I recently learned about Happy Mama which is the first organic baby food to expand into the prenatal category, offering Mom and Baby an easy nutrition solution throughout the First 1,000 Days, by starting as far back as the womb. How novel!

happy mama

You know like before, most of the products available aimed to give newborns, infants and babies a healthy start at birth.

But, the NEW Happy Mama® Prenatal collection is changing the trajectory of children’s health through nutrition by getting to baby before birth and making sure mom is in optimal health from the beginning of her pregnancy journey. We were gifted a generous package of the products to sample out and really enjoyed them!

The Happy Mama Prenatal collection includes a host of nourishing and healthy products including; Fruit + Veggie Blends, Probiotic Supplements and Gummies.

Another great thing about the collection is that it offers extra vitamins and nutrients that moms-to-be need like DHA, Choline, Calcium and Fiber, which they may not get from their diet or prenatal multi-vitamin alone.

When you can’t keep foods down because you’re suffering from nausea or morning sickness, these vitamins will come in pretty handy!

The Probiotic Supplement is flavor-free and easily dissolves in water – plus it’s a taste-less addition to soft foods. The supplement helps support Baby’s developing immune system. As you may know, probiotic supplements are also great for keeping one regular and are great for digestion and easing heartburn and other digestive woes that increase during pregnancy.

We’ve gone past the days of the ginormous yucky tasting pre-natal vitamins. Thank God!

Companies have gotten more inventive and are taking mom’s taste buds into account. Happy Mama’s Prenatal Gummies, for example, provide extra essential nutrition for Mama-to-be, such as Omega-3s, DHA, Choline and Vitamin D, with each bottle containing yummy gummies in three flavors: lemon, berry and orange. They are deelish! We tried them. Yummy!

Better than candy because the prenatal gummy is a supplement to your daily prenatal/multi-vitamin and it’s needed because the top prenatal vitamins on the market do not provide you with the recommended value of DHA, Choline or Vitamin D.

The Happy Mama Prenatal collection is available at Target as part of the Made to Matter—Handpicked by Target™ product collection in the women’s health aisle, but before you buy some, you can win the line from Happy Mama here! Open to US only from Now until November 13. Many ways to enter. Daily Entry options available!

Why ‘Gawker’ has Been Trolling Kristin Cavallari for 500 days

Third-time mom-to-be Kristin Cavallari is actively promoting the imminent release of her first book “Balancing in Heels” while waiting to soon deliver her first daughter with husband, Chicago Bears quarterback, Jay Cutler.

On the caption to a recent Instagram post, the shoe designer, most famously known for her role on the cast of the heavily scripted MTV reality TV show The Hills, wrote:

“It’s hard to believe I will be a mom of 3 in just a few short weeks…I owe so much to my babies…they have changed me in so many ways for the better.”

Cavallari, who has had bit acting parts in a few TV series (CSI:NY, The Middle and The League)and has been a TV host (The Fabulist),  first announced the book‘s release to E News back in January.

She revealed then that the book will also cover fashion, beauty, health, fitness and cooking.

Also since then, Gawker‘s “Defamer” blog has been trolling the pretty blond with its “500 Days of Kristin Cavallari” series.

Periodically, Gawker writer Allie Jones posts a little trollish tidbit about Cavallari counting down the days until the book is released.

We suspect it has to do with Cavallari’s controversial stance on vaccinations which she thinks causes autism.

It’s free publicity for her but something tells us that after the book is published, the trolling will continue into the context of the book.

Oh boy!

?

The snarky coverage hasn’t stopped the football wife from pushing her various projects.

Cavallari has also been promoting the Fall Fashion Campaign for her shoe imprint with Chinese Laundry.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight this month promoting the new season’s fashion, the Laguna Beach alum admitted that having three children scares her but that she is excited about having a baby girl.

She said she is already getting the nursery ready and “getting all the pink and purple clothes.”

Fun! Keep on, keeping on, Kristin!

A Love Letter From a Toddler Reviewer to Butler Overboots

butler overboot review bellyitchblog.com

A love letter from a new Penguin:

Dear Butler Penguin,

I love my Overboots! Since my mom opened the box, I don’t want to take off my boots – which has gotten me in trouble since we don’t wear shoes in the house. I do everything in my Overboots – I water the plants, I go on family hikes, I jump in puddles, I put on my bike helmet and pretend that I’m an astronaut. Basically everything.

Kid Easy, Kid Fun

When we are walking out the door and my dad says, “Put on your boots.” And I do, it’s that easy.I put on my own Overboots with no help. I slip my boots on and we’re out the door. No more “Are your shoes on?” or “Why aren’t you’re shoes on?” My shoes are always on with Overboots.

Mom says “Penguins go on the outside, hon.” I put my Overboots on the wrong foot and they are still comfortable. Then I look down, My penguins are talking to each other. Oh oh. Switch boots and now the penguins are on the outside.

Penguins Go Outside

Speaking of penguins going outside, Mom and Dad let me wear my Overboots on our weekly family hike in Rock Creek Park. We took my little brother and my dog. When my boxer dog, Idana, walked through the creek I did too. It wasn’t too deep and I got to splash and jump in the water.

Overboots definitely aren’t hiking boots, but since it was a bit slippery in the park, they were perfect for walking over wet leaves.

Where did you get those? What’s are they called?

Every time I wear my Overboots to school I hear one of my friend’s moms ask my mom, “Where did you get those boots?” I usually pipe up and say “they’re Overboots!”

Mom says, “They go over shoes, so they are the perfect rain boots. And the boots come with a cold weather insole so they are great winter boots. Plus they come in a number of colors, too.” Green is my favorite color so my Overboots are in Lime Green.

Mr. Penguin, I am proud to be the newest member of the Overboot family.

Yours Truly,

butler overboot1

How Jessica and Jerry Seinfeld are Helping Needy Families and Promoting Fatherhood

jessica seinfeld baby buggy bellyitchblog.com

We love when we see celebrities using their fame for good.

Nationwide, the need for diapers is great with nearly one in three U.S. families not able to afford an adequate supply.

Jessica Seinfeld, who we’ve previously reported for her work promoting her charity Baby Buggy which gives gently used essentials and other goods to families in need, recently announced the success of the “Change for Good” initiative.

It was a partnership with Seventh Generation brand and Whole Foods which led to a donation of 1.5 million diapers for families in need. For every pack of Seventh Generation “Free & Clear” diapers purchased at Whole Foods Market between May 1 and September 30, 2015, Seventh Generation donated a pack of newborn or size one diapers to Baby Buggy, who distributed them to families in need across the country.”

The diaper donations have helped families in countless ways, from a father in Southern California who can now send his child to daycare with real diapers instead of the makeshift homemade diapers he once created, to the expecting, low-income military families in the Seattle area who welcomed diapers in advance of their babies’ arrival, a press release from Seventh Generation read. The donations provide a necessity for babies and peace of mind for parents, as illustrated by the young mom living in a group home in New York who can now focus on reading to and playing with her baby when she gets home from her job as a store clerk, instead of worrying about how she will squeeze enough out of her paycheck to buy the diapers she needs. She can now be the type of mom she wants to be and that she never had.

“Diapers are an essential and relentless need. There are very few state or federal child safety-net programs that allocate dollars specifically for the purchase of diapers, and yet a pack costs approximately 1.5 hours working minimum wage for low-income families to afford,” said Dr. Laurel Parker West, Vice President National Programs, Baby Buggy. “This program is especially critical to families we serve who often have to choose between buying food and buying diapers, and we are so pleased to be making this national distribution to families in need.”

Awesome news!

These wins come on the heels of a recent launch of the organization’s “Baby Buggy Fatherhood Initiative” this past June, led by Jessica’s hubby famed comedian Jerry Seinfeld.  The goal of the initiative was to get dads involved in their children’s lives by expanding support and assistance to them as well, especially those in low-income families.

Good stuff! Kudos all around!

STUDY: Excessive weight gain During Pregnancy Could Lead to Lifelong Obesity

Gaining excessive weight during pregnancy can lead to obesity issues throughout life for women who are already at risk, according to a new study.

Researchers found that putting on too much weight while pregnant can cause excess body fat and pounds that remain, as reported by AJMC.

Columbia University researchers evaluated about 300 women, all of whom were African-American or Dominican, between the years of 1998 and 2013. The study group was at risk of becoming obese due to socioeconomic factors and unhealthy dietary patterns, according to the authors.

The participants had an average body mass index (BMI) of 25.6 prior to being pregnant, just slightly above the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention guidelines for being overweight. Five percent of participants were underweight, 53 percent were at a healthy weight, 20 percent were overweight, and 22 percent were obese.

The study suggests that 64 percent of these women put on more weight than the 15 to 20 pounds recommended by health officials. The women were then monitored for seven years after giving birth.
