Attention English-Only Adocates: New US Census Reports Say 380 Languages are Spoken in America

foreign language bellyitchblog.com

Last Friday, an Iowa woman sitting with her husband at an Applebees restaurant got upset at hearing a fellow patron speaking a foreign language and allegedly attacked the non-English speaking diner.

That woman, Jodie Marie Burchard-Risch, should be prepared to leave the US if that upset her because there are more than 380 languages spoken in homes in the United States, according to US Census reports released this week.

Twenty percent or 1 in 5 Americans over age 5 speak a language at home other than English.

Yup!

And we think that US Presidential candidates that want to make US the official language ought to take note as well that the nation they will be leading is quite international and cosmopolitan.

The majority (54%) of Reisdents in metro areas spoke a language other than English in their home.

In the DC area, where Bellyitch Blog is based, 25% of DC households or 1 in 4 are non-English speaking homes.  New York city boasts the most languages 192, with 1/3 of its residents speaking a foreign language at home.  The San Francisco Bay area came in second with 163.

Nationally, the Census reports state that even though English remains the dominant language, there are over 37.4 million Spanish speaking homes, 2.9 million Chinese-speakers, 1.3 million French, 1.1 million Korean, 1.1 million German, 1.4 million Vietnamese, 924,573 Arabic, 1.6 million Tagalog and 879,434 Russian speakers.

Contrary to popular belief, the data,  gleaned from Census information from 2009 to 2013, suggests that Asian-American immigrants have a harder time learning English than Hispanic immigrants.

Whoa!

jama attack
And back to the story in our lede about the woman attacked for speaking a foreign language.

Asma Jama was dining with several members of her family including children under 11-years old when Burchard-Risch, sitting at a nearby table, expressed frustration over hearing Jama speak in Swahili.

Jana recounted whet she told Burchard-Risch before the confrontation turned violent.

“Ok, ma’am, I can speak English obviously. I live in this country,” Jama told Fox9 news.” If you want me to speak to you in English, I can but if I am talking to my family, I can speak whatever language I want. After all, this is America, Freedom of Speech.”

After a verbal back and forth, Jama says Burchard-Risch threw a large beer mug at her face which later required 17 stitches in her lip that will take weeks to heal, Fox9 reports. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help Jama offset the medical cost for her treatment from the attack.

The US is rapidly changing in demographics and complexity and it’s time to be aware of it and adjust.

Knowing the number of languages and how many speak these languages in a particular area provides valuable information to policymakers, planners and researchers, Language Magazine analyzes.

STUDY: Teens Spend more Time on Digital Screens than Sleeping or Learning in School

teen screen time bellyitchblog.com

You probably won’t be surprised to hear that a new report found that teens and tweens spend a lot of time watching TV, videos and movies, playing video games, reading, listening to music and checking social media, but you might be somewhat shocked (I was!) by just how much time.

On any given day, teens in the United States spend about nine hours using media for their enjoyment, according to the report by Common Sense Media, a nonprofit focused on helping children, parents and educators navigate the world of media and technology.

Let’s just put nine hours in context for a second. That’s more time than teens typically spend sleeping, and more time than they spend with their parents and teachers. And the nine hours does not include time spent using media at school or for their homework.

Tweens, identified as children 8 to 12, spend about six hours, on average, consuming media, the report found.

Phew! Pregnancy #2 is Smoother Sailing for Kelly Clarkson

kelly clarkson

Kelly Clarkson is having a much better second pregnancy. The multi-platinum powerhouse singer looked fresh and upbeat at the Citizen Watch Company‘s New York Corporate Offices Grand Opening yesterday, wearing a cute charcoal grey tuxedo blazer and black and white striped blouse over black cuffed jeans.

The American Idol season one winner had a rough pregnancy with now 1-year old daughter River, she told BBC‘s “Radio 1 Breakfast Show”. “Like, I was hospitalized. It was jut kind of a bad pregnancy, so I had to take off way more than normal.”

This time is easier sailing. The “Heartbreak Song” singer announced the news of her pregnancy mid-concert during this summer’s “Piece By Piece” international tour.

She eventually had to cancel the final legs of that tour by doctor’s orders to rest her voice, but it will also give the second-time mom-to-be a chance to take it easier and prepare for life with two kids under 2. River was born just last year June 2014 and her son will be delivered early winter 2016.

Clarkson and her husband Brandon Blackstock are still practically newly-weds having just married in October 2013.

Cap Off Busy Weeks with A Friday Family Movie Night

This Post is Sponsored by Coca-Cola

When the weather turns cold, families have to get creative and find indoor activities for entertainment after school and during weekends. Family game nights are an excellent way to unwind and have fun after homework and dinner and before settling in for the night.

During the weekend, a family movie night is one of the best ways to chill, kick back, and enjoy some downtime after a hectic week.

We love sci-fi, nature, and superhero movies. When we’re not quizzing each other watching a quiz show or catching up on animal stories on a nature channel, we’re catching up on the latest episode of one of our favorite superhero television shows.

But for Friday family movie night, each member of the family gets a turn during the month to select the flick we watch. We all snuggle up under the covers on the sofa in the basement with some popcorn, snacks, and refreshments, including nice, cold Coca-Cola.

It’s the perfect start to the weekend, and a great way to cap off our usually hectic weeks.

When you add refreshing Coca-Cola to any situation, things go from good to great. Because when you add a little delicious Coca-Cola, it all adds up to memories.

5 Ways to Hide A Pregnancy Before you’re Ready to Announce the News

By now, most people know to conceal an rely pregnancy until the 12th week when the likelihood of miscarriages goes down significantly!

There are different ways to hide a bump by wearing A-line clothing, sheath dresses, baggy sweaters and maxi tops and dresses.

But there are other tell-tale signs that are even harder to hide like hurling! Doh!

Here are 5 tips for hiding a pregnancy:

1. Hiding morning sickness. You may have one challenge to not be caught by a co-worker throwing up in the bathroom. If you work in a multi-level office environment, use the bathroom on another floor. Chances are the people from those other floors won’t know who you are or won’t recognize the shoes to the woman losing her lunch in the stall next door.

2. Shielding alcohol avoidance. You may be known to NOT skip a drink offer. So if it would be uncharacteristic of you to say no to booze, take the glass when offered and pretend to sip it. Then replace the liquid with alcohol-free version when no one is looking. If it’s white wine, replace it with apple juice if convenient. If it’s pure vodka, water works. If it’s rum and coke, get just the coke.

3. Covering up the Early Pregnancy Look. There is a certain look that women who are suffering from morning sickness get: glazed eye, red nose, puffy cheeks are indications of vomiting and dealing with nausea. It’ll be hard, but just try. Also, don’t look too dumpy because that is a dead give-away that something is up. Keep your hair coiffed and keep wearing make up even if you’re feeling queezie and not up to it. If you have to heave, reapply your make up so you don’t look so green coming out of the restroom.

4. Disguising the hand on the tummy posture. You may feel the uncanny urge to rest your hand on your tummy. It’s an unexplainable phenomenon. Try to be conscious where your hands are and make an effort to keep them at your hips or another natural place OTHER than resting on your tummy…LIKE A PREGNANT WOMAN! A couple of years ago, when Mariah Carey was pregnant and before suffering her miscarriage, many outlets, including this blog, reported that she MUST have been pregnant based on that photograph alone! (see right)

5. Dressing to Hide a growing bump. Finally, dress in chunky but hip sweaters or A-line or empire waist tops or dresses to take the focus away from your tummy. Keep it fresh and trendy so it appears that you are wearing those tummy hiding outfits for style, not for the convenience of hiding a pregnancy you don’t want someone to know about.

Good luck!

Elisabetta Canalis welcomed daughter, Skyler Eva

elisabetta canalis birth

Belated congrats to the beautiful Italian model Elisabetta Canalis and her surgeon husband Brian Perri, on the birth of their first child together, daughter Skyler.

The Dancing With the Stars alum welcomed the addition just four days after we published our exclusive feature on her, on September 29.  Canalis is best known among American audiences for famously dating George Clooney for a few years, but we say a gorgeous renowned Beverly Hills Orthopedic surgeon is a pretty good upgrade.

“My life is full of love because of you… Welcome into the world our lil Skyler Eva 29 – 9 – 2015,” Canalis wrote in the caption of her husband kissing the baby on Instagram announcing the birth. She also later showed off a photo of their babyn who we know is gorgeous given her hunky parents, resting on her chest. Sweet!

Before You Apply to Enroll Your Kid Into Any School, Check this ONE Insider Source I Just Discovered

source school admissions

Parents, so, I just discovered an awesome new way to research a pre-school, day care, elementary school or high school that you are considering enrolling your child or children into, or applying to: Social media!

Yes, it sounds intuitive, but think about it, when you go in for a tour, you’re only going to see the premium and the perks the school has to offer. Everyone will be on their best behavior when visitors are in the building. Even during Shadow Days, kids are exposed to the ideal situation and usually have a fantastic time.

To be truly informed, you have to catch them off guard and since it is nearly impossible to get off-peak access when they are least expecting you, social media is the next best thing.

Here’s how I figured this out:

Recently, I shared an inspirational meme posted on Instagram and checked in to the public high school I was in at the time of my share. I was there at that high school to submit paperwork for someone I know.

Days later, while scrolling my own IG feed, I happened to click the location option on Instagram which takes you to all other IG shares at that site.  Much to my shock and surprise, I saw that the majority of the IG shares from that high school were of very brutal physical fights between students, taken and uploaded by students using their phones. In each of the shares, other students were gathered around in the hallways all filming the fights but no one doing anything to break them up. Often times, there was not even a school administrator or safety officer in sight!

Wow! It gave me a more insight into what goes on in that particular high school that I may not have known otherwise.

Since then, I’ve done the same with other area schools, both public, private and charter and am seeing the other side and making better decisions based on this insider knowledge.

There you go! Another benefit for social media: It’s your insider insider guide to schools.

Use the knowledge with care and do share with others! Good luck!
