5 Ways to Pamper Your Pregnant Wife

A woman likes to be spoiled – period. Whether it’s Valentine’s Day, Christmas, her birthday, or just Tuesday, she loves feeling special. So you can count on the fact that if she’s pregnant, she wants and needs to be pampered. If you’re looking to earn some brownie points, this pamper list has got you covered.

Below are some great ways that you can let her know that you love her:

1. The Power of the Spa What girl doesn’t love to spa? Spas are the epitome of being pampered. These days, many spas are catering to pregnant women. Now she can get a specially designed massage that addresses her body’s needs. A spa is a lot like a fancy restaurant; it has a menu full of delicious choices. Feel free to select an appetizer, a main course, and a dessert for your lady. Get her a facial, a massage, and a pedicure. She’ll leave feeling relaxed, pampered, pretty – and appreciated.

2. The Little Things Sometimes, it’s the little things that count. Those small but thoughtful gestures can have the biggest impact. Sometimes just asking if needs or wants anything can earn you big brownie points (even getting her real brownies can get you brownie points). Her hormones are a lot like a roller coaster. It’s important that you are sensitive to her feelings, and that you simply let her know that you are there for her. Give her a little foot rub, do the dishes, make dinner, or give her a card. These may seem like small gestures, but they’re ones that will make her feel pampered and loved.

3. Girls Just Want to Have Fun Cyndi Lauper sang it well: “Girls just want to have fun.” Plan a special little get together for her and her friends. Organize a spa day or an intimate girl dinner at the house. Whatever you decide, just make sure it thoughtful. Don’t microwave a couple some popcorn or hotdogs and think that makes a special girls’ night. If you do it, do it well. If you succeed, you’ll be a big hit with Ms. Preggers and her friends. Warning: Fellow husbands might have a bone to pick with you.

4. Your Love is like a Rock Your love is like a rock, and this baby solidifies that fact. What better way to show her that you love and appreciate her than with a rock? Diamonds, baby. Getting her some jewelry, whether it’s with diamonds or not, is a great way to symbolize your love and this special event in your lives. You can give her this luxe little gift before or after the birth of your baby. What woman doesn’t love jewelry? She’ll love it, and unlike her clothes, jewelry is a perfect fit. If possible, stick to necklaces or earrings. Fingers can swell during pregnancy. Jewelry will make her feel like a princess, and make her see you as her prince.

5. Date Night Women love romance, which is why they’ll even see a romantic comedy that’s received bad reviews. Like shoes, a woman can never have too much romance. Try planning a romantic date or getaway. Dinner at her favorite restaurant, a romantic candle-lit dinner in the backyard, a movie night on the sofa snuggling, or a mini weekend getaway at a luxurious hotel. Any of these ideas will make her feel pampered. For an extra dose of appreciation, feel free to indulge her with more than one of these fab ideas.

Hopefully, these ideas will inspire and get the cretative juices flowing!

Help Your Shy Child Make Friends, Speak Up, Build Up Self-confidence with This Book

social anxiety in kids bellyitchblog.com

I have a shy kid who is quite introverted who I worry struggles to make friends and doesn’t have too many.

For that reason, I was very excited to be asked to review educational psychologist Christine Fonesca‘s latest book, Raising the Shy Child: A Parent’s Guide to Social Anxiety

. (Retail $16.95).

It was a quick reference and instructional read and is full of diagnostic tests, hypotheticals, quizzes, tips and suggestions.

The book includes examples of kids from toddler to college age who Fonesca has encountered in her years of practice and through these case studies, readers can ascertain whether their own child at home closely matches the scenario presented.

It’s a very useful tool for a parent who wants to help but doesn’t know how and what to do.

Many parents  may not even be aware that a child who is shy, has behavior avoidance (avoids social situations) or is introverted may also have social anxiety disorder.

This book does an excellent job in explaining the condition, breaking down the biology of the social anxiety, and  helping a parent and child diagnose the condition via quizzes, info side bars and anecdotal examples.

A parent or the child can then compare his or her situation with the case studies to help determine if they’d react in a similar fashion. It breaks down the biology, early warning signs and sets you up with a plan and strategy for the future.

Once empowered with this information, a parent can then have a candid and open talk about their child’s thought process and then determine whether to seek outside help or to change their language or take some other steps to help out.  There are loads of intervention suggestions and strategies also in the book.

I like the fact that the book is written in non-technical language and in a conversational non judgmental tone

“Raising a Shy Child” also speaks to educators, teachers, instructors and also care givers and provides insight on how to help the “shy” kids in their care and class as well.

And it’s organized well so that it is very easy to go through. I’ve had the book for a while but when I sat down to read it for context, it only took me two days.

I’ve implemented some of the suggestions personally in the book with my kid and I can tell you we’ve already seen a noticeable difference and my son is making changes for the better.  My kid and I even had a good time going through the quizzes together. It was a bonding moment for us. I am grateful for that.

I highly recommend this book for those parents who want to help their child overcome stressful social situations, make friends and come to grips with and accept their shyness or introvertedness.

As they say, “knowing is half the battle”. This book gets you to awareness and from there, you as the parent are empowered to make changes .

Journalist takes on Excessive Ultrasounds Given in Low Risk Pregnancies

In the 6th month of his wife’s pregnancy, Wall Street Journal writer Kevin Helliker noticed that she underwent 17 fetal ultrasound scans, notwithstanding the fact that she had a low-risk pregnancy.

Curious, Helliker set out researching to find out what doctors generally recommend, how many such scans are medically suggested be given, how many are actually being performed and what is known/not known about ultrasound safety.

About 80% of most pregnancies are low risk, Helliker discovered, and that not since the early ‘90s has any epidemiological research been conducted on the procedure, and since then the power output on the scanning devices has increased eight-fold.

In his article this summer in the WSJ, Helliker notes that the scans “have turned the images of their unborn into fixtures of social media” and how in 2014, “usage in the U.S. of the most common fetal-ultrasound procedures averaged 5.2 per delivery, up 92 percent from 2004.”

Helliker summarized the potential dangers and risks, also, writing:

A joint statement in May 2014 from several medical societies, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, calls for one or two ultrasounds in low-risk, complication-free pregnancies.

Experts in fetal medicine have long recommended women undergo one ultrasound around the 20th week of a low-risk pregnancy, and in recent years they have come to recommend an earlier one as well, around the 12th week. About 80 percent of pregnancies are low-risk.

Fetal ultrasound in humans has never been shown to cause harm. However:

  • Nearly all research supporting its safety was conducted using equipment made before 1992, when the procedure produced about one-eighth the acoustic energy than today
  • Studies have suggested many operators don’t pay close attention to safety gauges while they are performing procedures.
  • Some animal experiments have suggested ill effects of ultrasound on embryos of mice and chickens.
  • A 2006 Yale University study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found neurological abnormalities in mice exposed to ultrasound in utero.
  • Multiple fetal ultrasounds can raise false alarms, including overestimation of fetal size that can lead to potentially unnecessary c-sections.
  • Research suggests multiple scans don’t provide better outcomes in pregnancies.

Glamour Writer: ‘Quit Clicking Those Celeb ‘After Baby Body’ Headlines’

how i got my baby back

Yesterday, in Glamour  new mom and writer Petra Guglielmetti calls out the celeb media’ obsession with the post delivery celeb mom, in her piece, “Let’s Stop Clicking on Stories About Celebrities’ Post-Baby Bodies”.

Here is an excerpt:

Today I “stepped out post-baby,” also known in the tabloids as debuting my post-baby body. At least I think today would be considered my official debut—I left the house to work at a cafe after months of maternity leave. According to the headlines, celebrity moms debut themselves after childbirth in a variety of ways. Some, like Blake Lively, “display” and/or “flaunt” their post-baby selves by wearing clothing—not even necessarily revealing clothing—to press events. Many “show off” en route to the gym, a la Jessica Biel. Others simply venture out in public with a friend, like Jaime King (“Less than weeks after giving birth to baby Leo, Jaime King is already making her way out into the world.” Less than weeks? And wow, to think, boldly being visible out in public like that.) Apparently, when you are famous and have just given birth, such normal-seeming activities become debuts, opportunities for the world to examine how well your looks fared during that whole growing-and-birthing-a-human-being thing…..

….It’s hard not to click on these stories, even though we realize we shouldn’t encourage paparazzi to stalk new moms, who are already vulnerable, riding a roller coaster of stress and hormones. (Yes, professional actors sign up for a certain amount of media attention, but motherhood—especially new motherhood—should be sacred, no matter how high-profile you are.) We click even though we realize we should not compare ourselves to people who have full-time nannies and on-call glam squads. We click even though we realize that every woman’s build and metabolism and biology is unique; most of us didn’t have Jessica Alba’s post-baby abs before we had kids. We click even though we know we’ll glimpse comments that make us lose faith in humanity (“Looks like her boobies have deflated!”).

She then goes on to express her experiences of living life fully after delivering her baby and under different standards and without the flashing lights and glare of the public. She confesses that the media stories about celebs, however,  can impact women’s opinion of their own post-baby bodies. Finally, Guglielmetti proposes we all work to end it:

Here’s what I propose: Let’s stop clicking. Just decide here and now that we’re not doing it anymore. It’s one little-but-big way in which we can make our world a kinder place for new moms, and women in general. When you see any headline with any variation on “post-baby body” in it, just don’t click. As someone who has been employed as an online writer for a long time now, I promise you that editors will notice that we’re all not clicking and that those stories will dwindle and eventually disappear. Wouldn’t that be lovely?

I’m down. We don’t really cover post-baby bodies that much anymore here so, less clicks for our competitors sounds lovely! ha!

Just kidding, we believe in the message. and have blogged similar themes before so Bravo, Petra!

Tamera Mowry-Housley takes 2-Month Old Daughter Ariah to NYC (VIDEO)

tamera mowry lax bellyitchblog.com

New mom Tamera Mowry-Housley is not showing her new daughter Ariah’s face on social media even though her millions of fans and followers have been nagging her to.

Well, those who want a glimpse of the actress and TV host’s baby could get a glimpse of her in her Orbit baby infant travel system after leaving with her mom at LAX heading to New York City to do some promotional interviews in advance of the second season of her hit FOX TV panel show, The Real.

Even while bombarded with the flashing lights of the paparazzi, this new mom kept a smile on her face and was so cordial even stopping to respond to their questions.

Here is a video of the arrival, captured by the folks at X17 Online.

When asked what she thinks of Kanye West saying he wants to run for president in 2020, she says, “He’d have a lot to say!” And on being a mom for the second time: “It’s awesome!”

(The sneaky devils captured Ariah’s face and zoomed in on it in this video though! Doh! Bastards!)

Mowry-Housley was joined by other members of the cast in doing the promo rounds, including co-panelist Loni Love at the Sirius XM studios in New York for an interview with another Bellyitch alum Jenni McCarthy.

The next day, their fellow panelist and yet another Bellyitch alum Tamar Braxton-Herbert did some promo rounds hitting up ABC’s Good Morning America looking all cute in her short dark bob which fits her face perfectly! We see you, Tamar!

Consider These ‘Good’ Things About Being a Broke Parent

broke parenr

Are you a broke parent? Barely getting by on a budget? It’s not all bad.

In fact, blogger Kelly at Almost Frugal blog did an interesting post featuring 6 things that make being broke an awesome thing, especially if you have kids.

My fave two reasons of the six are the last two:

  1. Nor do you have to feel guilty about not buying your kid (or yourself) that latest gadget. Self sacrifice builds character. And we all want our kids to have character, don’t we?
  2. Thrift shops have the best clothes! Who wants to look like your coworker’s clone anyway? This way you get to exercise your personal sense of style, and feel good about all the deals your scoring. Not to mention that the proceeds usually go to charity- what a good deed you’ve done!

Funny!

Gisele Bundchen’s Hubby Just Won Big Again, in Court this time

The beautiful ones are always winning, aren’t they?

A judge today overturned a 4-game suspension that the NFL had levied on New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who is the doting hubby to one of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums.

The judge ruled in the “deflategate” case that the league failed to follow certain procedural rules.

The court also said the NFL’s president Rodger Goodell did not give Brady access to the file with the evidence the organization used to make its decision to suspend him based on allegations that he was in on a scheme to reduce the air in team footballs to give Brady and Patriots players a competitive edge  during games.

The Patriots won the 2015 Super Bowl.

So now statuesque and leggy Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen‘s hubby can play when the season starts in a few weeks.

3 Body Parts of Someone’s Newborn You Should Never Touch

Just like pregnant women are community property, so, to a certain extent are newborn babies and infants. When people see them out and about, at the mall, the park, in the synagogue, temple or church, they can’t help but want to squeeze those juicy cherubic cheeks, stroke that curly soft baby fine hair and try to get the baby to grip their finger.

All three of these areas are big NO TOUCH areas for most people and especially for strangers who do not know the baby or its parents.

Here’s why:

1. The hands: At the earliest stages in a baby’s life, its hands are always in its mouth. They suck on their hands, fingers and fists for comfort. Adults have their hands on a variety of different objects throughout the day, often times picking up germs here and there. Most people do not use hand sanitizers nor wash their hands as often as would be ideal during the day. The worst thing a new mom wants to see is your grubby mitts exposing her newborn’s hands to whatever germ may be hanging out on your hands. It’s tempting and often times, understandably when you are overwhelmed by the cuteness in front of you, but don’t. Think before acting. It’s a gross thing to do.

2. The face: Many adults have sensitive facial skin and newborns’ skin can be no different and in some respects, are even more sensitive. They are fresh out the womb and are still developing their immunity. A cheek stroke from you (with your germ-filled finger) is liable to have the poor kid break out in a rash later. The mom may not be in a position to wash off your cooties before it’s too late. Just say no to the “cheek squeeze.”

3. The hair: Similar to the same reason you don’t touch a newborn’s face and hands unless you are its parent, pediatrician or just finished rubbing hand sanitizers on your hands moments before getting permission to approach the baby, you don’t touch or stroke a baby’s hair.

Of course, all of the above rules are flexible and can be waived depending on the situation and your relationship with the parents, but by all means if you are a stranger, it’s best to watch and not touch. If you must, tug at a socks or stroke the forearm. Understand, you’re still pushing your luck.

Just passing along a little public service announcement on behalf of all those new (especially first-time) parents out there who go through public settings full of anxiety on how to best protect their baby from unwanted advances. [That will be the subject of another post]
