Maternity Capsule Collections Can Get your Thru Your Entire Pregnancy

Dressing a bump is fun, there’s no doubt. It’s a rare time when our proportions get flipped around and a bulging belly is something to show off rather than disguise.

But that full belly is actually a fairly short blip in the whole process — a process that presents new challenges for dressing with each phase. And don’t forget about after the birth and the possibility of months of nursing.

With that in mind, here are some pieces to get you through the early months, those big-belly days and beyond — when you need all the help you can get.

5 Timeless Wardrobe Essentials (Regular & Maternity)

classicessentials-1

There are certain articles of clothing and items that are timeless and never go out of style. These wardrobe elements outlast trends and are essential for every woman to own. They can be dressed up or down and mixed or matched with trendy pieces.

Some of these items are included in my ebook, How to Look Like Old Money (Amazon Kindle $5.99) If you haven’t downloaded my ebook, I’m going to run down the five must-have and three must-have accessories, I’ve listed them below along with the maternity alternative version for moms-to-be who are also building out their wardrobes until baby comes.

They include the shirt dress, the nude pump, the black blazer, the white button down shirt and the little black dress. All are always on trend. I would add the ballet flat, the trench coat, chinos (cropped or full leg). The black boots, canvas sneakers and denim jeans are also wardrobe essentials.

1. The Shirtdress

2. The Blazer

3. The Nude Pump

4. The White Collared Polo Shirt

5. The LBD (Little Black Dress)

And now the three accessories:

 The Tote

Pearls

The Leopard Print Scarf

Bump Watch: Kerry Washington has Been Sticking with a Mainly Black Style Pallete

kerry washington

Since announcing her pregnancy at the 2016 Met Gala, Scandal star Kerry Washington has been laying low, but not as out of the spotlight as with her first pregnancy. She has made a few public appearances and in most of them, she looks to have selected to stick with a mainly black color pallete.

For example, at producer Jennifer Klein‘s 19th annual Day of Indulgence party held in the LA home of the Pearl Harbor associate producer,  Washington donned a black HATCH Chloe jumpsuit to the Los Angeles, California event held on August 14, 2016. According to the YBF, or other bump watch alums, Kristen Bell was at the even as well. So were alums Jennifer Lopez and Anna Farris, InStyle magazine reports.

kerry life & style

Washington and her husband, former NFL player Jimmy Kimmel LiveNnamdi Asomugha are expecting their second child. She decided to not film her hit ABC show while pregnant and succumb to all of the crazy ways show producers attempted to hide her bump. The show will return for its 6th season in the middle of the fall season, and on election night to be precise.

“We are basically going to start out the season on election night,” how creator Shonda Rhimes has said. “Yes, it is going to play into our season, but we’re not going to spend our time playing an election.”

KERRY SAG

She had to also get out of the house this past June 13 to collect her Actors Inspiration Award given at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation 7th annual L.A. Golf Classic Fundraiser in Burbank, California. She went with a floral light and airy Giambattista Valli bohemian dress with black and white heels from Sarah Jessica Parker‘s collection.

The next day, she broke up the black with white and was there for her friend President Barack Obama and his wife First Lady Michelle Obama when she spoke at the White House Summit on the United State Of Women June 14, 2016 in Washington, DC.  it was the White House’s first ever summit to push for gender equality.

KERRY JIMMY

Out of all her looks, I love the black ribbed flare dress she wore during a taping of  Jimmy Kimmel Live‘ on May 12, 2016. And I also adored the Brandon Maxwell cape dress she wore paired with Gianvito Rossi pumps in April at an event (see first image in above collage.)

Hijarbie Creator Tributes Hijab-wearing Olympic Athletes (#RioOlympics)

hijab

The Nigerian fashion blogger behind Hajarbie styled new Hijarbies after the two athletes who competed in the Rio Olympics in a hijab: sprinter Kariman Abduljadayel, the first Saudi Arabian woman to compete for her country and American fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, the first US athlete to compete in a hijab.

Those two are the latest styled creations of  Haneefah Adam, a 24-year-old from Ilorin, Nigeria, who said she started dressing hijarbie because she too wanted a Barbie doll she could relate to as well.

“Ibtihaj Muhammad is the first US Muslim Olympian to compete while wearing hijab. She has won a bronze medal in #Rio2016. Super proud!” she captioned a photo of Muhammad.

“Sprinter Kariman Abduljadayel?inspires us with her effort and journey; as the first Saudi Arabian woman to compete for her country in #Rio2016,” she wrote of Abduljadayel.

“I’d never seen a Barbie with a hijab before,” Adam told Quartz, explaining that she wanted to dress the iconic plastic doll in a way that represented her own style. The pharmacology student designed and stitched Hijarbie’s new clothes herself.

In interviews with Mic and BuzzFeed, Adam explained that the designs are often inspired by looks worn by popular Muslim fashion bloggers.

“I was mulling about the idea for about three months while I was still studying for my master’s degree in the UK.

When I got back to Nigeria, I went to the mall, purchased a doll, dressed it up, documented it and here we are,” she told Style.Mic.

Hijarbie’s account boasts 71,000 followers and Adams’ Instagram account too has 18,000 followers.

“I want [girls] to be inspired — this is about having an alternative and creating an awareness of having toys that adopts your religion and culture and in your own likeness, which at the end of the day, leads to an improvement in self-esteem,” she told Mic.

Rio Olympic 2016: DIY Nails for Every Fan and Athlete

swim nails

Tonight is the opening ceremony for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As in past years, we can expect fans and the athletes to decorate their nails in support of their home country or the team they are supporting. For the 2012, Olympics Buzzfeed did a spotlight on all the fab nails that female swimmers wore during the games (like the ones in the header and below)

Also, CNN also did a tribute to the fan arts in this montage that included some of these nails:

Finally, for the 2014 World Cup, we did a round up of fun DIY nails for all the teams that qualified for those games as well, which coincidentally were also in Brazil. Hope these draw some inspiration if you are moved to go brave and paint your nails in honor of your fave team.

Beyonce and daughter 4-year old Blue Ivy are down with the mommy and me fashion trend too. Only Queen Bey and her celeb royalty little girl have something many of us don’t: an endorsement deal with Gucci which provides custom dresses with the same floral and bee pattern.

The duo modeled their playful and fun dresses on a balcony in Paris with the Eiffel Tower in the background!  Blue wore a cute pink cat-ears headband and flat leather-and-neon sandals.  Mrs. Carter’s mini dress featured adorable tiered ruffle sleeve. The award-winning multi-platinum pop singer paired her look with a black collar brooch, cat-eye frame glasses, a hot pink envelope clutch, and open-toed metallic pink heels. Stunning!

For the rest of us moms and me, we too can do mom and me fashion with our daughters. Mom and Me Fashion is bigger than ever. More and more clothing companies and brands making miniature versions of a dress or outfit for baby. Also, fashion conscious moms who are creative are taking the time to put together mini-me versions of their clothing for their daughter.

mom and me fashion
If you’re thinking of crafting a miniature look, you don’t have to do the precise design and pattern but can mix it up and have the same impact like wear one shoulder rompers together. You can do horizontal stripes and have baby wear diagonal stripes. Match the cuts versus the color. Like you and your daughter can wear a-line dresses or matching maxi dresses.

African ‘Fertility’ Waist Beads 101

I went on a weekend getaway and rediscovered the waist beads my mom brought back for me from her trip to Sierra Leone, Africa earlier this year. It reminded me to share more about the  beads on the blog because there is a long history in the beads that include fertility.

In fact, they are called “fertility beads” in some cultures. It is thought that they originated with the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria, West Africa but other West African nations like Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone have adopted them. They are considered to be “of the earth” or the source of life as many women wear them during pregnancy to protect the baby from evil spirits and ensure a safe labor and delivery.

Some wear them to encourage fertility. It’s not scientific of course, but steeped in tradition. Others believe the beads have healing property. Some African women wear them to ward themselves from negative energy.

Erotic Nature of Beads

In some parts of Ghana and Nigeria, people have a belief that the waist beads possess some erotic appeal and have the power to incite desire or deep emotional response on men.

They Symbolism of the Colors

The colors and stones or beads used in the beads have different meaning too. Colorful rainbow beads are considered to have balancing properties.

~Yellow- Symbol of wisdom/knowledge, clarity, increases awareness & stress relief.

~Blue- Symbol of knowledge, healing, peace, truth & harmony.

~Orange – Symbol of optimism, positive mood & promotes self-confidence.

~Pink- This color is associated with unconditional love, romance, purity, femininity & healing.

~Green – This color is associated with prosperity, hope, harmony & healing.

~Red – Self-confidence, vitality, sexual energy, passion & courage.

~violet – Color symbolizes intuition, power, inspiration & royalty.

~Gray – Symbol of wisdom & communication.

~Brown – Symbol of comfort, security, practicality.

~Black- Symbolizes energy & strength. (source)

Beads can be made with semi-precious stones thought to heal certain ailments. They are sold, made with all types of materials shell, gemstone, glass, plastic, pearl or even clay or wood.

How to Wear Them

Waist beads are created to be worn below the belly. I have worn mine at my mid-riff as well. Some prefer to wear them under their clothing only to be seen by themselves or their spouses or partners. Others flaunt them on bare bellies or even over their clothing.

Waistbeads for tracking Weigh Management

Many women wear the beads as an instrument in losing weight. When the strands begin to be too tight, the wearer knows it may be time to cut back and start exercising if they want to maintain their weight. Also, for those on a weightloss journey, as the beads become looser, they know they are definitely on a downard trajectory as the scales do not always indicate loss when one is building muscle at the same time as muscle weighs more than  fat.

Modern Use

In modern culture, waistbeads have been adopted to flaunt and draw attention to a trim midsection or tight abs.  Women in Ghana have worn them to accentuate their hips.

They are more of a fashion element though those who wear them ought to be aware of their cultural origins and significance just in case they are questioned or asked about them while out and about. It is the best thing to be aware when donning an item of clothing or style that originates in a culture that is not their own. You don’t want to be accused of “cultural appropriation.”

Cost

If you don’t have a family member or friend coming back from Africa, certainly, you can grab yourself some from Etsy shops. I found them sold Here, Here and Here for about $10 and up. If you spot any on sale for $5, they may not be authentic and genuine but a mass-produced copy. Beware!

Lupita Nyong’o, a Bellyitch Blog fave was spotted wearing one (above) back in 2014 when she was in Maui for the Maui Film Festival. She was seen looking tone and effortlessly chic in a Marysia Swim bikini and even Instagrammed a pic from the locale.
