This Store is Like an H&M for Curvy Plus Size Fashionistas

fashion to figure bellyitchblog.com

Dude!

So I was shopping in my local mall with my mother-in-law this week and we popped into this hip and trendy clothing store that caters to sizes 12 to 26 only. I was blow away at all the vibrant colors, chic and sexy pieces and accessories in there. My mom-in-law felt it was too young for her, of course, but I could barely get away without snapping a pic of this curvaceous mannequin in a really cute club dress.

fashion to figure bellyitchblog.com

I had never seen clothes for curvy and buxom women so youthful before.

I went home and did my research and learned the store Fashion to Figure was founded by two New York city brothers, Michael and Nick Kaplan, who had the fortune of having for a grand mom plus size fashion pioneer Lena Bryant. Yes! That Lena who founded Lane Bryant (Fun Fact: the store is called Lane because she mispelled her name on a bank slip and kept it)

Well it all makes sense now! They have fashion (and money) in their gene pool and I’m so happy the brothers saw the wide open market for H&M and Forever 21 type of clothing for larger sized women and capitalized upon it! They opened their first store in 2004, then several others throughout New York city and currently boast 26 stores, per ABC TV’s Nightline recent plus-size fashion segment that included a snippet of the two.

From the colorful and trendy website, here are my fave tops, dresses, accessories and outfits I saw on the store’s website:

I found this tiny fashionista on Instagram and was immediately smitten by her very cute outfits.

50 Low Cost Summer Concert, Carnival and Festival Outfits

summer outfits bellyitchblog.com

Late Summer is peak music and food festival season. Here are my picks for how to dress for outdoor events that will entail dancing, feteing, standing on your feet for long periods of time or jamming to a music truck or band, moving down the road or on stage at a multi-artists venue or event:

The Romper: A romper is timeless and a simple choice. You can get them in a variety of designs, colors, patterns, materials and styles, from strapless, to full-sleeved, to cap or spaghetti sleeve. They flatter many body types so long as you are comfortable showing leg. The only downside is when you have to go to the bathroom in a port-a-potty at an outdoor event, but other than that, they’re a good bet.
You don’t have to break the bank either to get a nice cute romper. Stores like Forever 21, Asos, and H&M sell them and now that Summer is shortly coming to a close, there are tons of End-of-Summer sales in the malls and in online stores and boutiques.

My Picks:

Shorts and T-Shirts – You can never go wrong with some denim shorts and a graphic tank or t-shirt. The shirt should be a very light and loose material so in the heat, it doesn’t stick to your skin as you sweat. This is a safe bet also because they are easy to pack and can be rolled up into an overnight back and easily mixed and matched. If you get a graphic tee with a funky print or saying on it, you’ve got an instant conversation piece that also photographs well.
Stores like Old Navy, American Apparel and online boutiques sell these for super low prices.

My Picks:

Here is a Close Up of my Picks

The Sundress –The classic sundress is also a great pick for watching a summer concert or parade. Get one in a very light material, that also isn’t too clingy. Go for an A-line or Sheath material for maximum breezability. Don’t forget to wear shorts underneath not just in case you find yourself on someone’s shoulders during a concert, but also to avoid chafing between your legs as you walk and sweat.
Pair the sundress with wedges, espadrilles, very low heeled sandals, gladiators or strappy sandals. Do NOT wear slip on shoes because you will risk injury jumping up in them or chasing a music truck. You need something that will secure your shoe to your foot at all times.
My Picks:

Off the Shoulder top and Cropped Distressed Denims – I love an off the shoulder loose T-shirt. It’s sexy, simple and perfect for outdoor events or concerts. A pair of distressed cropped denim pants cuffed at the bottom are the perfect pairing for this look.

Peplum and Mini Skirt or Shorts –While peplum tops are making their way out of fashion, I still think they are a great option for giving you a cinched waist and masking rolls in the tummy. Pair these with a sexy mini skirt, skort or shorts in a sateen, lace or leather material for a really cute night event or fete.

Close Up

Cropped Bandage Top and Pencil Skirt- Admittedly, not everyone can pull off the cropped top because it would require you to have a somewhat trim midsection, but yet, you can still do it if you wear it with a high-waisted pencil skirt or bandage skirt. The bandage material compresses the tummy area. It’s not the outfit you wear to a “jump up” and wild and wassy fete, but the one you wear with your man, at a breakfast fete, or that event when you’ll just be styling and profiling in a VIP box or suite or something.

Close up

Tee and Denim: The loose Graphic T-Shirt with denim shorts is just a great look that works with most folks. It’s not too stoosh but cool for going down the road following a band at a carnival or watching an outdoor summer concert.

TREND: Florals by Dolce & Gabbana, GET THE LOOK

floral trend bellyitchblog.com
Florals are great to wear anytime but especially in the Spring and Summer months.

We spotted some of our diva-level Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums recently sporting the feminine pattern in sophisticated dresses and billowy peasant tops.

Jennifer Lopez wore a black and silver floral Dolce & Gabbana cap sleeve mini floral print dress with a matching D&G Sicily mini printed leather shoulder bag and white pumps at a recent event.

Beyonce, who is on active Bumpwatch, was seen recently in a billowy Lucy Paris floral peasant top with black trouser shorts and sandals. Late last month, the singer-songstress headed out in a Dolce & Gabbana knee-length dress that she accessorized with black Ray Ban sunglasses, a Stuart Weitzman Nudist Ankle Strap sandal and a nude Dannijo Lypton Chain detail cross body bag.

Maternity Capsule Collections Get you Through Pregnancy and Beyond

Dressing a bump is fun, there’s no doubt. It’s a rare time when our proportions get flipped around and a bulging belly is something to show off rather than disguise.

But that full belly is actually a fairly short blip in the whole process — a process that presents new challenges for dressing with each phase. And don’t forget about after the birth and the possibility of months of nursing.

With that in mind, here are some pieces to get you through the early months, those big-belly days and beyond — when you need all the help you can get.

Kim Kardashian’s Maternity Style Palette; What Else She Should be Wearing

kim kardashian bellyitchblog.com

Kim Kardashian West has said she will be keeping her maternity style simple this round. While pregnant with her first child with husband Kanye West, the reality TV star got a lot of ridicule and teasing on her over-the-top outfits, some of which wasn’t the best fit for her body type.

Not everyone can carry their baby weight only in their belly like some of these Hollywood starlets out here.

I notice that she’s had one consistent style palette so far: a bump hugging pencil skirt dress  in neutral tones under a long sweater, wrap, jacket or coat. She’s kept her hair slicked back as well.

It works for her!

I cannot imagine being knocked up in the public eye and being constantly photographed, featured on websites, blogs, and gossip magazines and newspapers, only to be picked apart, scrutinized, critiqued and ridiculed by every Tom, Dick and Harry with an opinion. Ugh!

It’s a trade off for fame.

Though her selection works for her, I’d mix it up a bit and branch out some occasionally.

Here are the couture level picks I’d go with if I had the budget of a Kim K or  Kim Cavallari. The belted looks can be worn above the bump. The high end pieces can be adjusted to fit your body in a more flattering way. There are a lot more styling and adjustment options for those that can afford to pay top dollar.

Below that are the more sensible, around-the-way girl price point selections I like.

Check them out.

Do you like.

For less pricier pieces, here are some items to consider:

Trend Alert: How to Rock Vertical Stripes

stripes trend bellyitchblog.com

Traditionally, stripes are a no-no for women because of their perceived effect of making one look wider. Vertical stripes though can elongate the body. They are a trending look this season.

Trend conscious moms, young moms and preginista moms-to-be who may be looking for ways to pull off this look can try espadrilles, accessories, scarves and other fashion items to interweave the trend in their wardrobe.

Those who are bolder can bring in color vertical stripes as a twist on the prison stripes.

If you are not so brave, going with striped earrings could be a subtle and minor way to play up the trend while still being safe.

Have it your way!

ThrowBack: Eudoxie Agnan Bridges’ African Tribal Maternity Shoot

eudoxie photo shoot1

This is not necessarily new, but still I am crushing on the tribal print skirt, head band and bandeau top in a maternity shoot that Eudoxie Agnan Bridges wore in a maternity shoot she did while pregnant.

It juxtaposed nicely with the traditional Western shot the Gabonsese beauty  took with her American husband, Fast and Furious franchise actor and rapper  Christopher “Ludacris” Bridges  and in with a floor-length lace lounge jacket, also during her final trimester of her first pregnancy.

Also, still loving the tranquil lilac nursery she decorated for their newborn daughter Cadence Gaëlle, that the philanthropist and Med-School student shared on her Instagram.

Atlanta-based photographer Donna Permell of Prime Phocus Photography did a superb job on the shoot!
