Remarkable: Doctors Repair Spina Bifida Defect Before Birth

There’s a remarkable procedure to correct a birth defect and prevent brain damage.

What’s amazing is the surgery was done on the fetus while the baby girl was still in the womb.

The birth defect, called spina bifida, was found during a routine sonogram at about 18 weeks of pregnancy.

The spinal column doesn’t form normally and close around the spinal cord. That can lead to the brain partly collapsing out of the skull, back up spinal fluid and preventing normal brain development.

In one case, doctors at the Cleveland Clinic decided on a rare procedure to prevent brain damage in a fetus. They would try to repair the spina bifida defect by operating on the baby in the womb, which they call in-utero fetal surgery.

Study: Pregnant Women Space Themselves from Others Farther Apart

Are pregnant women really more prone to forgetfulness and spacey behavior? Research looking into “pregnancy brain” have had mixed results.

But a new study from Anglia Ruskin University and Addenbrooke’s Hospital shows that pregnant women are much more alert and vigilant than their peers, even subconsciously seeking out more personal space – as much as 26 inches.

“Pregnancy involves massive and rapid changes to the body both externally, as the body suddenly changes shape, and internally, while the fetus is growing,” lead author Dr. Flavia Cardini of Anglia Ruskin said. “Our results suggest that when the body undergoes significantly large changes, at the stage when the abdomen is clearly expanded, the maternal brain also begins to make adjustments to the space immediately surrounding the body.”

The researchers used an audio-tactile test with more than 80 pregnant women in their second and third trimesters, along with 41 women who weren’t pregnant. In three sessions, they played threatening sounds and then used a small tapper attached to their abdomen to provide a “touch” sensation.

On average, personal space is the space within about an arm’s length, though that can vary by culture, age and environment.

And it can apparently also vary based on the stage of pregnancy.

The researchers from Anglia Ruskin and Addenbrooke’s found that during the third trimester, pregnant women subconsciously seek out more personal space. However, they showed little difference on space preference in the second trimester or after birth compared to women who were not pregnant.

Pregnancy and childbirth can trigger weight gain, temporary depression and a myriad of other physical and mental health issues and for the creator of make up brand dedicated to amateur make up users, The Crayon Case, SupaCent, the symptom of giving birth recently, sadly, has been severe memory loss.

Raynell “Wuzzam Supa” Steward aka @SupaCent on Instagram, a social media -star- turned makeup mogul, famously made over one million in minutes with her popular cosmetics line, last Black Friday 2018.

She repeated her success this year during Valentine’s Day.

Then, she got pregnant and was very transparent and open about the entire process down, chronicling her very difficult pregnancy with her millions of fans and followers on social media and giving them a blow-by-blow from water breaking to birth of her second child, daughter Leà Mae Leagea, and after.

However, recently, according to her loved ones and family, Supa has been experiencing severe memory loss and is having a difficult time post-partum.

After giving birth in March, she hared some now-deleted photos of herself in the hospital and requested prayers from fans.

In her Instagram Story, Steward said she had her boyfriend take her to familiar places to help jog her apparently failing memory, and added that one of her doctors recommended that she see a neurologist.

Mild forgetfulness and so-called “pregnancy brain” is a known and scientifically acknowledge phenomenon that happens among expecting women. However, loss, which is on the lines of dementia-like levels is very unheard of.

Nonetheless, a research study conducted 2009 from Dr. Diane Farrar of the Maternal and Child Research team at the Bradford Institute for Health Research in London discovered the brain can remain foggy three months after birth too.

It was hypothesized that she had a liver dysfunction that triggered the memory loss but as of today, it is still unclear.

Her last Instagram photos shows her entire head wrapped in a bandage, perhaps an indication that she has undergone some sore of surgery to to th brain or head.

In any event, about a week ago, her publicists released a statement asking for privacy.

She’s slated to get married to the father of his child in the coming months.

Here is to wishing she recovers, and regains what she has lost and can be stronger for her baby girl.

Study Seeks Diverse Math Teachers for $35 per Hour Summer Opp

A National Science Foundation (NSF) funded study is looking to pay diverse math teachers $35 per hour for about one hour of work towards its work on a new pilot program that will help teachers give more effective feedback on student assignments.

Together with Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Lesley University’s Center for Mathematics Achievement, a program called ASSISTments is looking for diverse 6th-8th grade math teachers to pilot a new ASSISTments feedback system

According to the study leaders, the “ideal teacher candidate is curious, eager to provide effective feedback to their students, and open to working with researchers to improve student feedback systems.”

The opportunity is open to teachers anywhere in the country.

The ASSISTments DRIVER-SEAT pilot project grant is focused on supporting middle school mathematics teachers in providing efficient, practical, and individualized feedback to students’ open-response questions.

Its research uses machine learning and computer science to make providing feedback to students on open-response questions easier. 

Teacher participants will be asked to do some or all of the following:

  • Assign students open-response questions
  • Write feedback to your students’ open response questions
  • Write feedback to students outside your class
  • Select from automated responses generated by a computer
  • Provide feedback to researchers about computer-generated feedback

Teacher participation will help create a library of authentic teacher responses that will enable us to apply deep learning to discover how to help teachers provide feedback to their students more effectively. 

In particular, the study seeks teachers that identify as Latinx/Latino/a, Black or African, African American, Asian, Indigenous, Native American, Pacific-Islander, and American Indian. 

Teachers must meet the criteria below in order to be eligible for participation:

  1. Teach middle school mathematics, grades 6-8
  2. Be willing to use Engage NY (Eureka), Illustrative Mathematics (Open Up Resources), and/or Utah Mathematics on the ASSISTments platform at least 3 times/week in class or for homework assignments
  3. Teacher and students must have access to a device (in or out of school)

Singer Cassie is Expecting Her First Child

Cassie is expecting her first child with boyfriend Alex Fine.

The singer, 32, confirmed the exciting news on Instagram Wednesday, revealing she is expecting a baby girl.

“Can’t wait to meet our baby girl  ? Love You Always & Forever,” Cassie captioned a slideshow of photos of herself and Fine sitting in a car together.

Fine also raved over the news and shared a heartfelt letter he wrote to the couple’s unborn child.

“I will be the first man in your life and will show you the greatest love and affection now and forever,” Fine wrote alongside a photo, which shows him kissing Cassie on the cheek.

“I never thought my heart could grow bigger after meeting your mother… then I found out we were having you and I instantly felt a love that is so indescribable,” Fine continued.

“I promise to be at every dance recital, concert, sporting event, school plays whatever you decide to do I will be there and support you. I am your number one fan.”

“I promise to be a man that you and your mother look up to and love. I will always listen and put the both of you first.”

Fine also promised to show his baby girl a “healthy relationship.”

“I promise to never approve of any boy you like because they will never be good enough for my baby girl. Sorry,” he continued.

“I can’t promise that I won’t embarrass you because I will give you so many kisses at every school drop off.”

“I will be the Dad that never forces my opinions on you. I will love whatever you do in life as long as you’re happy.”

“I promise to love you every single second unconditionally until my last breath.”

He concluded the note with, “You’re perfect to me and always will be.”

The New Season of ‘Revenge Body’ Starts Soon

I was catching up on the latest episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians on E! and noticing how baby sister of the trio of Dash sisters, Khloe Kardashian looks super thin and a lot like her Instagram photos that people keep accusing her of achieving by photoshopping.

I thought, yeah, it’s pretty hard to photo shop video! She really worked hard to shed pounds after giving birth to her daughter True last year. And after what happened with her ex Tristan Thompson‘s serial cheating, she is really living the Revenge Body mantra.

Then I remembered that a new season of her Revenge Body challenge show on the E! network starts soon.

A teaser released by the network summarizes all of the exciting activities we can expect for the next iteration of the popular spin off.

Per the new footage, Khloe Kardashian‘s transformation series will “redefine” revenge. Not only will contestants shed pounds with the help of Revenge Body‘s trusted trainers, but the participants will also bulk up on muscle as seen on a contestant who has been genetically thin his entire life.

“I only know how to do skinny,” one male participant admitted in a confessional. In the promo reel, fitness and lifestyle consultant Ashley Borden assured the client that he could put on about 30 pounds.

Of course, this won’t occur without some “blood, sweat and cheers.“

“It’s not just about today. It’s about the rest of your life,” Luke Milt, former a professional rugby player and show motivator says.

All of this wouldn’t be possible without the wise guidance of Revenge Body‘s host. True story.

“You look amazing,” a contestant noted to Kardashian.

“Honey, I’m trying to keep up with you,” the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star happily responded.

Sorry Millenials, Gen Z are A More Savvy Generation

A new report characterizes Gen Z as tech and mobile savvy, better with their money and investments, more conscientious and multi-dimensional

Sorry Millenials!

A new report essentially says Generation Z, those born between 1995 and 2015, are better than you guys.

Describing them as “old souls”, the report by the National Retail Federation summarized Gen Z as better savers, more responsible, and multidimensional than the older Millenial, Gen Y, generation stating:

According to Jeff Fromm, consumer trends expert and author of Marketing to Gen Z, “our research suggests Gen Z not only influences other Gen Zers but also other generations.

“They are not a continuation of millennials,” the report states. “Gen Z is very grounded and financially savvy, with 72% currently saving money for future expenses or investments.”

The news gets rosier about them:

“It’s true that many receive financial support from their parents, but 33% pay for all of their own expenses when shopping for personal items,” says Kerri-Ann Santaguida, vice-president and general manager of global merchant and network services at American Express Canada

Fromm, a partner at ad agency Barkley, says that “Gen Zers value hard work and have strong leanings towards saving for their future. They are old souls in young bodies and we say this in our research.”

For Gen Z, the big topic is equality while for millennials it was the environment – both matter. “Highly digital and mobile, Gen Zers can gather more information from the palm of their hand from their phone than any generation before.”

Alexis Fields and Tamera Mowry-Housley collab On Family Winery

I love it when I see Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums in partnership with one another.

More common, I see some of the women featured on this blog wearing the designs of other celeb moms previously showcased. Think Georgina Chapman, Victoria Beckham, Stella McCartney and others but this weekend, alum Alexis Fields designed the wine tasting room for fellow Bumpwatch alum Tamera Mowry-Housley.

Fields, a former child star and sis to Kim Fields (Facts of Life, Living Single, Real Housewives of Atlanta), turned her friend and one time Sister, Sister co-star Mowry-Housley’s new venture into a dream by working on the interior of the venue, a labor of love for The Real panel talk show host and her family’s venture, Housley Napa Valley.

Fields shared the unveiling to her followers and fans on Instagram.

This weekend was filled with love and new/old friends at the grand opening of @housleynapa. During this project, we became family. It was such a group effort and couldn’t have been accomplished without the love and dedication of each person involved.
